Step inside the velvet-lit world of Discothèque Decadence — where the champagne flows, the bassline smoulders, and the dancefloor becomes an irresistible spell. This set drips with the kind of late-night heat that keeps bodies moving and eyes locked. From Da Lukas & Majuri's extended temptation of “Nasty Girl”, to a hypnotic reimagining of Eurythmics' “Sweet Dreams” via Steve Angello, to my own Out of Control edit of Laura Branigan's “Self Control” — every track here has been polished for maximum seduction. You'll glide through Sade's “Paradise” given fresh life by Mark Lower & Alexandra Prince, a honeyed spin on A Taste of Honey's “Boogie Oogie Oogie”, the shimmering disco mischief of KC & The Sunshine Band in an Eric Kipper extended ride, and Kool & The Gang's “Fresh” reinvented with OnDaMike's club-ready punch. Along the way, Séamus Haji & Kathy Brown, Ken@Work, Shabi, HP Vince, Groovemasta, Chewy Rubs, Eugenio Fico & Walterino, Micky More & Andy Tee, Greg Wilson and more deliver heaters you think you know… until they arrive dressed for midnight. Warm. Sexy. Sultry. Dangerous. The sound of a dancefloor you never want to leave. Press play… and don't say I didn't warn you.
On the end of the end of history and what comes next. Phil is back on the pod, talking with George and Alex about the big themes of the podcast. In particular, we look at a recent essay in Foreign Policy by historian Christopher Clarke called "The End of Modernity". To what extent was the 1989 moment as significant in Beijing as Berlin? Is Trump actually Stalin (but in a good way)? Is Russia the revisionist power? And if so, in what regard and what are the consequences? Who says the choice is between "liberal democracy" and "authoritarian populism"? Then, we take your questions and comments from the past month. In the late seventies, Studio 54 was the place to be for musicians and celebrities alike. John Lennon, Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen and others all famously hung out at the notorious club where hedonism was part of the venue's allure. The success of Studio 54 was sudden and massive, resulting in mountains of cash, cocaine, jealousy, revenge, an FBI raid, and an ironic ending for one of its owners. Metal Decadence - 26 juin 2025
Capitalism's crisis theories reveal more about leftist political failures than economic reality, as deterministic approaches miss the cultural dimensions of decay while simultaneously failing to deliver the promised revolutionary outcomes.• Examining Aufheben's' "Decadence, the Theory of Decline or Decline of Theory" as a framework for understanding how leftists conceptualize capitalism's decay• Crisis theories traditionally mark WWI as capitalism's turning point toward decline, though interpretations vary widely among Marxist traditions• Neoliberalism is fundamentally misunderstood by leftists who equate it with laissez-faire policies rather than recognizing its public-private partnership model• Conservative decadence theories correctly identify cultural symptoms but propose solutions that accelerate the problems they diagnose• Contemporary manifestations of decadence include declining literacy, rising obesity, and political systems that increasingly cannot function according to their own principles• The business cycle's reassertion after periods of apparent stability challenges deterministic theories of capitalism's inevitable collapse• Multipolarity's emergence in global politics creates new instabilities but also potential openings for changeSend us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. Velvet vibes. Open invite. Slip into something sinful and press play. You're about to be seduced by the ultimate Ibiza mixtape — a sensual, sweat-slicked journey through three decadent decades of dancefloor ecstasy. From the velvet grooves of the '80s, the hypnotic pulse of the '90s, to the euphoric highs of the 2000s… this isn't just a mix. It's foreplay for your soul. We open with Jamiroquai's Space Cowboy (David Morales Mix), a slow burn that melts into the lush heat of FPI Project's Rich in Paradise. From there, it's pure hedonism: Masters At Work, Full Intention, Soulsearcher, and that glorious Spiller x Sophie Ellis-Bextor tease that made the world fall in love on a dancefloor. Every beat, every remix, every bassline is dripping in desire — from the sweet ache of Show Me Love to the deep, body-moving throb of Deep Inside and the glitter-soaked rush of Groovejet. And just when you think you've had enough... You're hit with the finale: "Italian Piano Banger (Jazz Hand's Extended Mix)” — my unreleased love letter to ‘90s euphoria. Think laser lights, lifted hands, and pure unfiltered joy. This is your golden hour. Your afterparty fantasy. Let go. Turn it up. And lose yourself in the decadence. 1. Step into the velvet night… This isn't just a playlist. It's a full-throttle, sequin-soaked seduction—a Nu Disco love affair with the spirit of Studio 54. A glimmering galaxy of grooves where mirrorballs spin like planets, champagne flows like confetti, and every beat whispers: let go. Behind the velvet rope? Legends reborn. CHIC, Grace, Sylvester, Sister Sledge—revived by remix royalty. From Dimitri From Paris to Dave Lee, Louie Vega to Horse Meat Disco, this is where classic heat meets future funk. The bass is deeper. The edits are sleeker. And the vibe? Unapologetically decadent. Expect cosmic highs, sensual lows, and a BPM that pulses through your hips like a lover's whisper. Whether you're strutting downtown, candlelit and fearless, or dancing alone in silk and sweat—this is your soundtrack to liberation. Glitter up. Dim the lights. Press play. Studio 54 isn't gone. It's just been reborn.
In this episode, we definately talk about Coroner's 1988 album Punishment for Decadence, and definately don't spend most of the episode talking about anything but due to a total lack of attention span.
This week we're discussing Donald Trump's insistence that there's nothing wrong with America that can't be solved by simply denying your insatiable appetite for ever more dolls and pencils. Does the president's suspicion of all trade speak to the existential malaise of the modern American cursed to live in a time of obscene overconsumption, a people incapable of listening to their inner moral conscience in the face of so many tempting glittering baubles? Is the wage of living hypocritical lives in contradiction of our values a collective victimhood that prevents us from accepting responsibility for our actions? Are we a nation of fucking babies? Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - looking back at Tuesday's Quarter Finals, where Arsenal blew away Real Madrid in a stunning second half at the Emirates, whilst Inter dispatched Bayern with ruthless efficiency on German soil. We start with the man of the hour - Declan Rice - whose two unbelievable free-kicks handed Arsenal the lead in their tie against Real, putting the Gunners on their way to a 3-0 win that even the most ardent Gooner wouldn't have seen coming. Looking at the game as a whole, we discuss where Arsenal got things right, where Real Madrid got things wrong, the second leg at the Bernabeu, and loads more. Then in Part Two it's time to head to Bavaria to discuss Inter beating Bayern 2-1 at the Allianz, thanks to some clinical finishing from them, some profligate moments from their opponents, and a chaotic ending that saw a goal at each end in the closing two minutes of normal time. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
"The Floressas Des Esseintes, to judge by the various portraits preserved in the Château de Lourps, had originally been a family of stalwart troopers and stern cavalry men. Closely arrayed, side by side, in the old frames which their broad shoulders filled, they startled one with the fixed gaze of their eyes, their fierce moustaches and the chests whose deep curves filled the enormous shells of their cuirasses." This 1884 French novel exemplifies the Decadence literary movement and influenced Oscar Wilde. Join us to explore a style of writing from a time and place so unlike our own.
What if the concept of decadence holds the key to understanding our societal and political structures today? This episode challenges traditional narratives by dissecting Samir Amin's unfinished work on revolution and decadence through a Marxist lens. We navigate through Afibung's critique of decadence theory, contrasting Marxist views with more coherent conservative critiques of current institutions. Furthermore, we tackle the pressing issues in the education systems of the U.S. and Britain and ponder how the normalization of capitalist problems by the left may hinder societal progress. Our dialogue draws on insights from Christopher Lasch's "Culture of Narcissism" to suggest that the root of societal issues may go deeper than mere narcissism.Join us on a journey through historical socio-political frameworks as we question Eurocentric grand narratives and explore the tributary mode of production. With a critical eye, we scrutinize the tendency of Marxist scholars to generalize historical categories and contrast this with the nuanced perspectives of civilizations like the Roman, Byzantine, Arab, and Ottoman empires. This discussion probes the coherence of these generalizations and their role in understanding the evolution of productive forces and state structures, challenging the utility of broad historical categorizations.Imperialism and socialism's past and present dynamics take center stage as we analyze the challenges of forming anti-imperialist alliances in today's fragmented world. Reflecting on historical parallels, from the Roman Empire to modern Western capitalism, we examine the enduring divisions of labor and the pressures facing nations like China and Cuba. Through the lens of global socialist states, we explore Hugo Chavez's vision for a Fifth International and the ongoing struggles of socialism in the context of economic development and class struggle. This episode invites listeners to reconsider the nature of revolutions and the implications of bourgeois ideologies in shaping new modes of production.Check out Revolution or Decadence by Samir Amin. The boys and Varn Vlog are back again, talking about "Decadence Theory" and how it differs from "crisis theory" and "breakdown theory." Send us a textWhat if the revolutions that shaped our world were never meant to begin in the most advanced nations? Join VarnVlog and Regrettable Century as we unravel the intricate tapestry of revolutionary decadence and world systems theory, exploring the profound insights of Samir Amin, Giovanni Arrighi, and Emmanuel Wallerstein. We embark on a journey through Amin's critical examination of Eurocentrism and his bold stance during the Egyptian revolution, where his support for the liberal side against Islamists served as a testament to his unique ideological position. Through probing discussions, we challenge traditional Marxist narratives and uncover the complexities of proletarian stratification and imperialism's ever-evolving definitions. This episode takes a deep dive into Marx's legacy, examining capitalism not just as a mode of production, but as a force that redefines societal structures. We tackle Marx's political integration into economic theories, appreciating Engels' contributions to anthropology and ecology, while offering a critical analysis of Baran and Sweezy's monopoly capital theory. Our conversation underscores capitalism's transient nature, urging a reconsideration of historical expectations and the need for theoretical adaptations to contemporary realities. From the mid-20th-century socialist revolutions to the rise of neoliberal economic restructuring, we map the shifting ideologies from Marxism to Islamism and the repercussions on global political landscapes. This episode critiques the evolution of developmentalist regimes and the reinterpretations of Lenin's theories, drawing parallels between the fall of ancient empires and modern capitalist crises. As we navigate these historical transitions and systemic oppressions, we invite you to question established paradigms and engage with the ever-changing narrative of global political ideologies. But one cost of that purposeful lack of narrow focus is that sometimes you fail to communicate the gravity of the important things that are happening in the world. And at the moment, I think some of the most important stories in the world are in tech—and more specifically, in the relationship between government and technology. A relationship that is closer now than it's been in many decades. We begin with TikTok—the most popular source of news for Gen Z in America and the most downloaded mobile app in the world in 2024. Last year a bipartisan bill signed by Joe Biden demanded that the parent company of TikTok, which is the Chinese firm ByteDance, sell its American business or else face a ban. Well, today, TikTok is legally banned in America, and also in broad use, because Donald Trump—the man who called for banning the app in 2020—saved it in 2025 by essentially declaring that he won't uphold the law. We then spend most of this episode talking about the crescendo of predictions from Silicon Valley that the AI frontier is nearing a breakthrough. In the past few weeks, members of OpenAI, Anthropic, and other frontier labs have claimed that they are less than three years away from building AI agents that are, to borrow their language, better than humans at everything. I ask Kevin how widespread these predictions are, whether we should believe them, what it would mean if they're right, why they might wrong, what's the biggest bottleneck still standing in their way, and why it's so hard for the news media to report responsibly on a story like this, where we're asked to take seriously the economy-shifting potential of a technology that we can't actually report on because it doesn't actually exist. And then, because I'm also completely bewildered by the bonfires of corruption that are erupting in crypto-land, we close on crypto. With Trump's inauguration today, are we really about experience a new “golden age” in America? No. Not at least according to the best selling writer Robert D. Kaplan, author of Waste Land: A World in Permanent Crisis (out next week), who argues that Trump's inaugural ceremony today, attended by fawning Silicon Valley moguls, exemplifies the moneyed “decadence” that often precedes imperial decline. A new book from Kaplan is always a big deal. But in today's Trumpian America, Waste Land seems particularly prescient. The book draws heavily from historians of decline like Oswald Spengler and examines how globalization has split American society into two halves: a cosmopolitan, globally-oriented coastal elite and a poorer, more nationalistic hinterland. He argues that this division has eliminated the political center, burdening every election an existential quality. Despite the book's generally Spenglerian pessimism, Kaplan concluded with a note of hope, suggesting that a rediscovery of classical liberalism – characterized by constant questioning and lack of dogmatism – might help us navigate through today's 21st century Waste Land of anarchic violence. Robert D. Kaplan is the Robert Strausz-Hupé Chair in Geopolitics at the Foreign Policy Research Institute. He is the bestselling author of twenty-two books on foreign affairs and travel translated into many languages, including The Good American, The Revenge of Geography, Asia's Cauldron, Monsoon, The Coming Anarchy, and Balkan Ghosts. For three decades he reported on foreign affairs for The Atlantic. He was a member of the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board and the U. S. Navy's Executive Panel. Foreign Policy magazine twice named him one of the world's “Top 100 Global Thinkers.”Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Nicholas Carr has been amongst the most persistently prescient observers of the digital revolution over the last quarter century. Take, for example, his 2012 essay "The Arc of Innovation Bends Towards Decadence," which, in many ways, foresaw our current technological and social predicament. Carr's thesis was that technological innovation increasingly moves toward fulfilling self-indulgent desires rather than addressing fundamental human needs, following a pattern similar to Maslow's hierarchy of needs. Carr accurately predicted the shift from idealistic views of technology as tools for self-actualization to their current role in feeding narcissism and anxiety. The timing of his essay proved particularly significant, as 2012 marked a crucial turning point when smartphones became dominant and social media reached mass adoption. This period coincided with what social psychologists like Jonathan Haidt identify as the beginning of a sharp rise in anxiety and decline in self-confidence, especially among young people. Carr's insights extend to current debates about AI, where he sees a potentially "decadent" trend of outsourcing fundamental human activities like writing and thinking to machines. He frames this as part of a broader pattern where technology, instead of enhancing human capabilities (in the manner of Steve Jobs' "bicycle for the mind"), increasingly substitutes for them entirely. Most notably, Carr recognized early on that digital technologies, while promising connection and democratization, often trigger "our worst instincts." His analysis helps explain why, despite growing awareness of social media's negative effects, we remain unable to disentangle ourselves from these technologies - a phenomenon he describes as "mis-wanting." Essential stuff, as always, from the great Nick Carr.Nicholas Carr writes about the human consequences of technology. His books, including the Pulitzer Prize finalist The Shallows: What the Internet Is Doing to Our Brains and the forthcoming Superbloom: How Technologies of Connection Tear Us Apart, have been translated into more than twenty-five languages. He has recently been a visiting professor of sociology at Williams College, and earlier in his career he was executive editor of the Harvard Business Review. In 2015, he received the Neil Postman Award for Career Achievement in Public Intellectual Activity from the Media Ecology Association. He writes the Substack newsletter New Cartographies. A New York Times bestseller when it was first published in 2010 and now hailed as “a modern classic,” Carr's The Shallows remains a touchstone for debates on the internet's effects on our thoughts and perceptions. A second edition of The Shallows, updated with a new chapter, was published in 2020. Carr's 2014 book The Glass Cage: Automation and Us, which the New York Review of Books called a “chastening meditation on the human future,” examines the personal and social consequences of our ever growing dependency on computers, robots, and artificial intelligence. His latest book, Utopia Is Creepy, published in 2016, collects his best essays, blog posts, and other writings from the past dozen years. The collection is “by turns wry and revelatory,” wrote Discover. Carr is also the author of two other influential books, The Big Switch: Rewiring the World, from Edison to Google (2008), which the Financial Times called “the best read so far about the significance of the shift to cloud computing,” and Does IT Matter? (2004).Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Steve Hillage is a founding member of System 7, one of the key proto-trance acts of the early 90s, and Mirror System whose latest album 'Route 77' is out now.Prior to his involvement in dance music he had an extensive career as a guitarist in bands such as Gong, Decadence (with Kevin Ayers), Khan, and Uriel, formed with the members still at school. His solo career includes records produced by Nick Mason and Todd Rundgren, and his own production career includes records with Simple Minds and The Charlatans.Additionally, that pretty stellar CV also includes a key contribution to the representation of dance music at Glastonbury with the establishment of the dance tent in 1995.So clearly this is a good person to have on the show. We discuss the psychedelic rock scene in the 70s, the development of music tech in the 80s, and his eventual realisation that dance music was his musical home by the time of the first System 7 record in 1990.And of course a lot of other stuff too... including some advice from Jimi Hendrix and the connection between Underground Resistance and George Clinton. This is a great way to start 2025, get involved! If you're into what we're doing here on the pod then you can support the show on Patreon! Over the next two months, our theme will be “Sovereignty in the Silence.” As we read the stories of the Bible, it can be hard to imagine seeing some of the miraculous and majestic moments firsthand. It's inspiring and awe-inducing, but outside of our regular experience. We're not likely to cross the Potomac or Anacostia River on Monday and see it part like the Red Sea or Jordan River. It makes it hard, at times, to understand God's presence and action in life now, when it can feel like He is silent. Esther is the only book of the Bible that does not mention God. Like, at all. It was written when God's people were scattered, taken into exile by Assyria, then Babylon, and now under the Medo-Persian Empire, but so many were displaced in what became known as the diaspora. God seemed silent. As we head into a new year, Esther will help us to see and recognize God's presence and power, even in the silence. We will see the place we hold in the grand, vast story of this world like a thread in a Persian tapestry. As God's people in this place, at this time, with these governmental leaders, how to we live faithfully for the glory of God and the good of all people? Esther will help us to find our way.
Esperanza and Irwin talk about the storied (and sordid) history of Ocean Castle, on Meadow Lane, Southampton. In 1929, the stock market crash doomed many, but apparently, not William F. Ladd. Apparently, his alleged bootlegging operation supported an unimaginable lifestyle. He commissioned the prestigious architectural firm of Peabody, Wilson and Brown to design what was described as a multi room fairy tale on over 300 feet of oceanfront. The next owner, Robert Harris rents the house in 1963 to fellow summer resident Donald Leas Jr, who hosts an after party there that trashes the place, including breaking 1600 windowpanes. By 1978, the eccentric theater producer Roy Radin acquires the property, hosts a nightmarish party that leads to sexual assault. And this pre-dates Barry Trupin, who in the midst of constructing Dragons Head down the road, rents the property and literally installs Coney Island within it! Too much to describe here, but listening will be believing!
I do see the connection in the sins of the world and the leading to enslavement since it remains a hidden, shadowy world that seems to rule this one.

Instead of focusing on current events, they delve into the big picture, examining historical cycles of empires and their modern implications. They explore the essay's breakdown of the life stages of empires—pioneers, conquests, commerce, affluence, intellect, decadence, and decline and collapse—illustrate with examples from various historical empires like Assyria, Persia, Greece, Rome, and the Arab Empire. They also discuss how these observations resonate with current issues in the United States, including the welfare state, influx of foreigners, internal political divisions, and the rising influence of intellectualism and materialism.
