Eclectic jazz performer coming to Cold Spring Modest but accomplished actor and musician Nellie McKay is reticent when asked to discuss her work and style. She's more animated on political passions, like feminism and animal rights, and more talkative onstage. McKay (pronounced "McKye"), who will perform a sold-out show on June 6 at the Chapel Restoration in Cold Spring for its Jazz at the Chapel series, is comfortable enough there to reveal many personal details, like the story about why she mispronounced her guitarist's name after a 2011 appearance at NPR's Tiny Desk: "I was stoned when I met him." Three years ago, while a guest on a radio show in North Carolina, her face brightened when she heard that Sierra Nevada sponsored the segment. "Brought to you by a beer? I love that; it's about time." The host replied, "It's that time sometime" — i.e., 5 o'clock somewhere. Responding with a coy smile, she said, "All the time." The show is broadcast from the campus of Isothermal Community College in the state's Appalachian west: "I feel like I'm going to school again; I want to get some supplies," she said, not in reference to textbooks or pens. Then she launched into "The Drinking Song," a melancholy number about drowning sorrows after the death of a loved one, vowing to "drink, drink, drink" and "dream, dream, dream" when sleeping off the binge. McKay's musical knowledge is vast. She's hip to the Hawaiian music craze that brought the ukulele to the mainland in the 1920s and 1930s. As a pianist, she recorded a tribute album to music, movie and television icon Doris Day, who broke out in the mid-1940s and promoted animal rights. When the topic of World War I came up in conversation, McKay immediately referenced Death of the Liberal Class, by Chris Hedges, which focuses on the Committee on Public Information, a federal agency that created and spread propaganda. "That's where the war economy and the misinformation in the mass media started," she says. "I have to be political — we're such pawns." To escape, she tries to avoid the noise. "It's so good to unplug," she says. "Silence is my favorite music, but it can be hard to find." McKay is a seasoned actor and writer of themed musicals that cover obscure historical figures, like Barbara Graham, the third woman in California to die in a gas chamber (at San Quentin). She also encapsulates the life of Billy Tipton (born Dorothy) in a "Girl Named Bill," a play on Johnny Cash's biggest hit, "A Boy Named Sue." Tipton, who kicked off a career as a jazz pianist and bandleader in the 1930s, passed as a man for her entire life. Paramedics who responded to her death in 1989 discovered the truth. McKay lives on the road, with no fixed address. "Sometimes venues put me up, but I just travel," she says. "I'm a trucker." The Chapel Restoration is located at 45 Market St. in Cold Spring. McKay's performance, which begins at 7 p.m., is sold out, but tickets may be available at the door. To download music, see nelliemckay.com.

The final of the three very special interviews Martin conducted with some of the biggest names in Welsh folklore and ghostlore, in this episode it's this inspirational Peter Stevenson! As we chat about from the outset, Peter is, as far as anyone we know of can tell, the greatest living authority on Welsh folk tales. Author of books including Welsh Folk Tales, Welsh Folk Tales for Young and Old, Welsh Folk Tales of Land and Sea, and Moon-Eyed People, about the Welsh diaspora in America, Peter has been working in folk art, music and storytelling for his entire career. He is perhaps best known in some quarters as an illustrator. Some know him as a fine artist. Others perhaps know him as a filmmaker. Either way, his preoccupations with three themes unite his work - landscape, people, and story. In this ranging chat, Peter discusses his life and career, his perspective on the country he calls home, and the very nature of 'Otherness.' From ghost stories to ladies who decide to live in the No Man's Land between sea and cliff, the Mari Lwyd to the important of music to Welsh folk culture, we hope you enjoy the chat and feel inspired by Peter's favourite Welsh folk tales of all.Afterwards, Eleanor and Martin take a moment to unpack some final reflections we've come to across Series 7, try to pronounce the longest place name in all of Wales, and sign off with a big thank you to our entire community of listeners and all the people who have helped us learn all we have along the way.We really hope you our series about Wales has been as fun for you as it has been for us, and will speak to you again on Monday for this month's Forgotten Melodies Bonus Episode all about Drinking Songs, including new versions of Bring Us In Good Ale, All For Me Grog, and The Barley Mow, arranged and performed by us!Visit Peter's website: https://www.peterstevensonarts.co.uk/The Three Ravens is a Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on a historic county, exploring the heritage, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. IntroductionAs Yiddish was spoken by many Ashkenazi Jews for centuries, it should serve as no surprise to listeners of The Jewish Drinking Show that many Yiddish songs either revolved around or at least involved drinking. To introduce us to Yiddish drinking songs for the 181st episode of The Jewish Drinking Show on this topic is Rokhl Kafrissen.Biography of GuestRokhl Kafrissen is a journalist, teacher, and playwright and winner of the prestigious 2022 Adrienne Cooper Dreaming in Yiddish prize. Between 2017 and 2024, her “Rokhl's Golden City” column appeared monthly in Tablet magazine, covering the length and breadth of Yiddish culture, including an essay on drinking. In 2021, her song “Kum tsu mir” (a Yiddish translation-adaptation of Jimmy Buffett's "Why Don't We Get Drunk …") was recorded by an all-star klezmer trio and in 2024, the Israeli funk-jazz band Malox released an album featuring another of her Yiddish song translations, "Makhn a vayivrekh (Breakthrough)." She taught two new classes on Ashkenazi women's folk magic and religion for the Yiddish Book Center during the fall of 2023 and 2024, and her classes and lectures on "Everyday Ashkenazi Magic" are a favorite with students around the world. Ghosts litter Drinking Songs. The damned drowned, dying soldiers, innocents packed onto a train before it explodes; there's not a note on Drinking Songs that isn't haunted. Released 20 years ago this year, Drinking Songs marked a foundational shift in Matt Elliott's life. He abandoned his work in the drum & bass group Third Eye Foundation and found a different way to pedal dread. Elliott composed using a morass of phantom vocals, nylon guitar, off-kilter piano, wailing horns, and a pervasive sense of doom. His vision was a dour bar in some Eastern European barony, where the patrons haven't realized they're already dead. 20 years on, Elliott has returned to Drinking Songs with a live, recomposed version of the original tale, the specters of the damned as lively as they were two decades ago. We talked to him about the best drink to pair with the album, the death of innocence, and the false promise of futurism on The Woodhouse.

Titres interprétés dans le grand studio- What's Wrong Live RFI- What the Fuck Am I Doing on this Battlefield ? extrait CD- A Waste of Blood Live RFI. Line Up : Matt Elliott (voix, guitare, saxophone)Son : Benoit Letirant, Mathias Taylor.► Album Drinking Songs Live 20 Years On (Ici d'Ailleurs 2024)► Concert théâtre de l'Atelier 31 mars 2025Site Matt Elliott. Réalisation : Hadrien Touraud.

Register your feedback here. Always good to hear from you!Surely no sin in our culture, except perhaps for fornication, has been glamorized more than drinking. Too bad Prohibition didn't work. But then, making sin illegal rarely does. We'll discuss whether drinking rules apply to rich and poor alike; how wine ruins your life, and how it may show up wearing a dress; the connection between songs from the bar and songs in the church; and the lines I won't cross, even to play a terrific board game.Check out Hal on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@halhammons9705Hal Hammons serves as preacher and shepherd for the Lakewoods Drive church of Christ in Georgetown, Texas. We're taking a journey today as I share the story of how I found myself playing Sci Fi Drinking Songs at science fiction conventions around the nation. This is Pub Songs & Stories #284 0:15 - Marc Gunn and Jesse Ferguson “Molly Malone” from Come Adventure With Me 2:52 - WELCOME TO PUB SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. I'm a Sci F' Irish musician and podcaster living in Atlanta, Georgia. This show is for fans of Celtic music and science fiction and fantasy. I create Celtic-inspired music. In fact, I also host the multi-award-winning Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I've done that for nearly 19 years now. But I also love science fiction and fantasy. I started playing at Dragon Con, the largest fan run sci fi convention in 2002 and in 2007, I started playing at Gen Con, the largest gaming convention. Both have been super instrumental to my music and career over the years. And today, I'm gonna share a live concert from Gen Con 2023 of Sci Fi Drinking Songs, where I not only share some of my more popular songs there, but I also share how I got here in the first place. If you're new to the show, please subscribe. You can do that PubSong.com or Just send me an email to follow@celtfather. I'm currently working on a new podcast series where I highlight my very first solo album, Soul of a Harper, which is 20 years old this year. I hope to release that series this summer. Badger was a businessman Roots in the community A reaver ate his little gang And now he can't even pee Durran's steak was always rare Before I first met him He met a reaver now won't eat steak He's a vegetarian Bester loved ships and women They howled when he boarded them He shipped was boarded by reavers. Now He howls when they board him. Boss Higgins' word was law What he said was set in stone Then reavers hit Higgins' Moon The law is now written in bone Fanty and Mingo are fine twins You can't tell one from t'other Until they met a band of reavers Now Mingo's the prettiest brother Jubal was a bounty hunter A sadist through and through He rambled about philosophy While a reaver started to chew No mercy, they all were weak Cattle for the slaughter Open them up, look inside I think I see Harry Potter 18:23 - Marc Gunn “Reaver Drinking Song” from Come Adventure With Me 20:57 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. 'Willie Brew'd a Peck O' Maut' is one of Robert Burns best drinking songs. It was written by Robert Burns in August / September 1789 whilst staying with Willie Nicol at his lodgings just outside Moffat. Allan Masterton was also there and he wrote the music. This all happened over a few days during a 'Lads weekend' together. It is just a whole lot of fun rolled up in some great lyrics and sung to a joyous tune.Enjoy!

Annie and I both went to high school in rural Arkansas, and the first thing we ever learned about country music (having just moved from Chicago) was that there were three subjects covered:  My Truck, My Momma (or My Grandma), and My Beer, or whatever other liquor you had around.  Now that's about as simplistic as country music can get but shoot...who doesn't love a country song about drinkin'? But then I wash them when I get home.” He responded: “FYI, we have these bags for fruits and veggies at the grocery store and they are awesome and you don't need to use the plastic bags OR have to put your stuff straight in the basket” 21:08 - One of the best things about Dragon Con… 21:55 - DOWNLOAD MY FREE EP You can download all of my songs in this show. First, let me point out, a drinking song isn't about alcohol. It's a song with a fun, easy-to-sing chorus. Sometimes it's interactive. “Wild Rover” has claps in the chorus. “Rattlin' Bog” and “The Unicorn Song” have a whole bunch of motions that act out the lyrics. “Seven Drunken Nights” and “Big Strong Man” have phrases that the audience shouts back at the singer. These were the songs I was thinking of when I wrote the cat's perspective of a famous folk song. I never liked “The Cat Came Back.” It was cruel and I love cats. So I decided to rewrite the song using the melody of “The Moonshiner”. But I wanted to make it a call-and-response song. So I added “Ka-Boom”, “Gurgle” and more to the end of the verses. But when I finally decided to play it live, I had NO idea how to get the audience to interact with the song. Eventually, I taught the audience the 5 different responses (five, really? What was I thinking?). I introduce each exclamation before the verse. But it's still difficult to get them involved. If you want to write a drinking song, keep it simple. One call and response throughout is best. Teach it at the beginning of the song. “Slainte Mhaith” is a great drinking song. It has an easy-to-sing chorus. But it also has a super easy call-and-response. “When I sing slainte mhaith, you shout it back to me. Slainte mhaith! [Slainte mhaith]”. Sometimes you learn to do something the easy way. With this song, I learned what not to do. Ah well. Live and learn. Here's the lyrics to “The Cat Came Back… The Cat's Perspective”: I was a crazy cat for many a year, My years are advancing. Now I sleep in my chair. But old Mr. Johnson still wants me to play If I don't get active, he'll send me away. I'm a yellow tabby, kinda flabby. And I'm coming home. And if you don't like me, then leave me alone! I'll eat when I'm hungry. I'll sleep when I'm tired. And if you try to wake me, you'll wish you had died. His neighbor ambushed me with shotgun and dynamite. My cat senses warned me. So I put up a fight. I clawed at his cigarette. It fell to the floor. It lit the dynamite as I ran out the door. KA-BOOM! He gave me to a boy with a dollar and a note To drown me in the river when we were afloat. I saw the rope come towards me and let out a yowl. The boat tipped on over. The poor boy was drowned. GURGLE! He gave me to a man going up in a balloon. I clung to his head. I am no buffoon. The man tried to free me, but then lost control. I stole his parachute as he crashed ‘gainst a knoll. KER-SPLAT! He took me to the mill where the meat was ground. He left off the lights, so I wouldn't look around. But I saw that food processor come closer to me, I jumped to the floor. He tripped bloodily. CRUNCH! Mr. Johnson, Mr. Johnson, I know you hate me, But I have nine lives and you haven't even three. Blessed are the cat lovers. Blessed are all kitties So love me or leave me alone for to sleep. One of the more creative is through banking. The fossil fuel industry is funded by investors. What happens if investors refuse to invest in them because they don't want to support the fossil fuel industry? We will see greener energy. There's a campaign in the U.K. asking people to green their investments. Thinking about that I just migrated to a new Mutual Fund so that my money no longer supports Fossil Fuels. Yeah. My small mutual fund will not make a huge difference. But imagine if just you and I made this change and we had the exact same amount in our pension? What if 10 other people on my mailing list did the same? Or 30? Multiply your pension times 30 and we start to make a real impact. That's really what it takes. It takes each of us being aware and making small changes to force banks to stop investing in fossil fuels and start investing in the health of our planet. 52:34 - Marc Gunn “St Patrick Never Drank” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 54:50 - ALBUM GIVEAWAY CONT… 56:47 - Marc Gunn “Wild Mountain Thyme” from The Bridge 1:01:29 – CREDITS Thanks for listening to Sci Fi Pub Songs & Stories. The boys are back! We're doing some more classic mixes this season, and had a big plan to start it off right by doing another power hour with our bud Dave Lynch. Unfortunately, a couple of us were ridiculously hungover at the time of recording and were in no shape for such a feat, so the three of us instead recover and listen to the drinking songs we picked. And it's a good thing we didn't do a power hour, because these are not fun-time songs. Most of them are, in fact, about the sadder elements of drinking, from Kendrick Lamar's ominous warnings to Ernest Tubb's old-timey country binge drinking. But we do still find time for some Bad Bunny bangers and ICP favorites, along with a recommended spirit for each track.
