STAR WARS: How Much Would a DEATH STAR Actually COST?!?

Does It Fly?

“Now witness the power of this fully armed and operational battlestation!”Emperor Palpatine, shortly before nothing goes wrong for him whatsoever.Say it with us, “that's no moon…that's a space station.” One of the most quotable lines in the Star Wars saga actually tells you quite a bit about the central threat of the original film (now officially known as Episode IV: A New Hope but to anyone who grew up in the ‘80s or ‘90s, it will forever be known simply as Star Wars). The Death Star, the Empire's ultimate planet-destroying superweapon is the size of a small moon (or a large asteroid, as we'll get to in the episode) but is actually a mobile space station that can house and deploy thousands of troops, hundreds of small ships, and packs enough firepower to turn your home planet into multiple orders of space McNuggets. You'd probably assume that something like the Death Star would be completely out of the realm of scientific plausibility. And you might also make assumptions about the story logic or the vibes of the Death Star, especially since the entire Star Wars franchise essentially lives or dies by its vibes. Unlike, say, Star Trek (please don't make assumptions that we are biased simply because this is a Roddenberry production), which tries to lean heavily on the “science” part of science fiction, the Star Wars brand of sci-fi has always had a healthy dose of fantasy. Fortunately, we have Dr. Hakeem Oluseyi and Tamara Krinsky to explain how it all works for you…and also how much it might cost to actually build one of these things. We took a look at the entire history of the Death Star, from what we see in Episode IV, Return of the Jedi, the “Starkiller Base” evolution in The Force Awakens, and even the gritty military realism of Andor and Rogue One to find our answers, which might just surprise you.Don't believe us? (“That…is why you fail!”) Well, padawans, watch the latest episode of Does it Fly? right here and you might just be surprised at what we found!Watch the video version here:https://youtu.be/aE4vkGo-QfkSUGGESTED VIEWING Everything you really need to know about the Death Star (but were afraid to ask) is pretty much contained in Episode IV: A New Hope (we're still calling it Star Wars), Return of the Jedi, and the truly great Rogue One. But it's worth checking out The Force Awakens to see how the Death Star evolved into Starkiller Base. And while Rogue One prequel, Andor on Disney Plus has yet to tap into Death Star mythology…you really, really, really need to be watching that show. But Tamara also recommends the original The Making of Star Wars documentary which has some wonderful looks at how the movie magic of the Death Star was pulled off. Track it down!Tamara also points out a couple of classic war movies that were key inspirations for George Lucas for the assault on the Death Star: 1955's The Dam Busters and 1964's 633 Squadron.FURTHER READING Do you want to delve a little deeper into the facts, concepts, and stories Hakeem and Tamara referenced in today's episode? Of course you do!MimasNo, not orange juice and prosecco! Saturn's seventh largest moon does look suspiciously like the Death Star, doesn't it? It's also about 1/10th the size of The Moon, which makes it much closer in actual size to the Death Star.Asteroid PsycheGiven the absurd cost it would take to actually build a Death Star, we're going to need to raise some capital. Fortunately, there's an asteroid in our solar system that may be composed entirely of materials “worth more than the entire world economy.”Dyson SpheresIn case you're wondering what it would take to power something like a Death Star, let's start with a Dyson Sphere, which could potentially channel the power of an entire sun. Hey, if you're looking to blow up a planet, do it right. Do they exist? Maybe! It Costs HOW Much?Never mind the price of steel and other building materials, get a load of how much firing a weapons grade laser costs. Now imagine that multiplied by how much it would take to destroy a planet! How Star Wars Almost Didn't Happen“I believe it was said at the time that no science fiction picture grossed more than $10 million dollars, and no picture with War in the title ever grossed more than six or seven million. So the idea of a sci-fi film with War in the title was a pretty deadly combination.”The article that Tamara quotes from can be found in full here, and it's full of fascinating info!Operation Plumbbob We can't explain it any better than the Atomic Heritage Foundation: “Operation Plumbbob was a series of 29 nuclear tests conducted by the U.S. military between May 28 and October 7, 1957, at the Nevada Test Site. It was one of the longest and most comprehensive test series in the continental United States, and became controversial after much of the operation was declassified. There were several objectives during Operation Plumbbob, including improving tactical weapon design, conducting bio-medical experiments, safety testing, and component and design testing for thermonuclear systems to be detonated in future operations.”They've got some pretty amazing videos of this as well.WANT MORE FROM DOES IT FLY?We've tackled Star Wars concepts before, so check out our episode on lightsabers right here! The new season of HBO's The Last of Us is currently giving everyone nightmares, so we told you why you maybe (?) shouldn't worry too much…for now.FOLLOW US!Stay in the loop! Do you ever feel like you're living the same day over and over again? Every three years our University of the Seven Suns along with hundreds of other psionic schools from across the Eternium compete in a giant resource contest within the ringworlds surrounding the Dyson Sphere of Partikan. It was pretty fun until I started waking up at the beginning of the contest without knowing why. No one else seemed to know what I was talking about so I was on my own in figuring out how to break the cycle. The truth turned out to be more sinister and dangerous than I ever would have imagined. Enjoy the first few chapters of the audiobook. If you like it, check out Audible.com for the full story.

In this episode of This Week in Space, Rod Pyle and Tariq Malik talk with Dr. Jim Green, former NASA Chief Scientist. He discusses how we can search for technosignatures that might indicate advanced civilizations in other star systems, new ideas on Mars sample return, and his fascinating experience consulting on the movie, The Martian! Also: this week's robotic landings on the Moon - one successful, one partly so; what's up with the USAF X-37B mini-shuttle; and recent news on those Energizer Bunnies of space, Voyagers 1&2. Their wings have been clipped a bit, but they just keep going... join us! News Lunar Landing Week: Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost lander achieved a flawless touchdown in Mare Chrisium, the Intuitive Machines Athena lander reached the Moon's south polar region but experienced issues with its navigation radar (and tipped over), and SpaceX's Starship test flight 8 successfully caught its booster for the third time but lost control of the upper stage, resulting in the breakup of the upper stage and debris over the Bahamas and Caribbean. NASA powered down additional instruments on both Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 to extend their remaining power supply, including Voyager 1's cosmic ray system that helped confirm its entry into interstellar space in 2012. The secretive US Space Force X-37B space plane landed at Vandenberg Space Force Base after 434 days in orbit, completing its seventh mission, which tested new orbital capabilities, including aerobraking techniques. A newly released list showcases the world's top ten locations for dark skies and stargazing, with the US only having only one location—in Hawaii—to make the list. Dr. Jim Green His Career: Dr. Green goes over his former role as NASA's Chief Scientist and highlights key aspects of his career, including running the National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) and leading NASA's Planetary Science Division, and how his interest in space first began. The Martian: Dr. Green also explains how he got involved as a consultant for Ridley Scott's movie, "The Martian," and how NASA got really involved with the film. He also shares his favorite scene from the movie. NASA's Search for Alien Civilizations: Dr. Green shares how he helped shift NASA's focus from traditional SETI to searching for technosignatures like Dyson Spheres and O'Neill structures in other star systems, securing $10 million in funding for research that could detect megastructures in our astronomical data while noting that humanity may need similar space habitats in 800 million years when the sun makes Earth uninhabitable. Mars Sample Return Strategy: Dr. Green explains how NASA's evolving plan to return samples fropm Mars includes developing Mars Ascent Vehicles that could eventually support human missions while revealing that Perseverance was deliberately designed to place sample tubes on the surface so any nation could retrieve them, making the mission more politically viable with budget offices and Congress. Humanity's Cosmic Future: Dr. Green reveals that he helped create NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program to support new companies for lunar missions. Despite early failures, he emphasized that humanity must utilize space resources and capabilities to ensure our species' long-term survival. What is the Kardashev Scale? Introduced by Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev in 1964. A method of classifying civilizations based on their ability to harness and control energy. Originally had three types, but modern interpretations expand it further. The Levels of Civilization Type I – Planetary Civilization Can harness and use all available energy on its home planet. This includes fossil fuels, renewables, and full planetary control over climate and resources. Humanity is currently at ~0.73 on the scale (according to estimates by physicist Michio Kaku). Type II – Stellar Civilization Capable of harnessing all energy from its star. Could involve Dyson Spheres—megastructures built to capture solar energy. Such a civilization would be essentially immune to planetary disasters. Type III – Galactic Civilization Controls energy on a galactic scale, possibly utilizing stars across an entire galaxy. Would require interstellar travel, advanced AI, and megastructures beyond human comprehension. Beyond Type III – Theoretical Extensions Type IV: Harnesses energy on a universal scale, possibly tapping into dark energy. Type V: Masters multiversal travel, controlling energy across different realities (pure speculation at this point). Where Does Humanity Stand? Currently at Type 0.73, relying on fossil fuels but progressing toward renewable and nuclear energy. Theoretical advancements—like fusion power and space mining—could push us toward Type I. Potential roadblocks: climate change, resource depletion, self-destruction, or technological stagnation. Are There Other Kardashev-Level Civilizations? The Fermi Paradox: If advanced civilizations exist, why haven't we detected them? Possible explanations: They are too advanced to notice us. They self-destruct before reaching higher levels. They use energy in ways we don't understand (e.g., dark matter manipulation). Thanks for listening, but remember, don't tell anyone about what you heard today, because This Podcast Is a Secret!

Episode 281 In this special episode recorded live at the Science Museum in London, we celebrate some of the best, most awe-inspiring science stories of 2024.  Round one kicks off with the panelist's stories of the year, including the discovery that thousand-year-old preserved brains are much easier to find than we realised, that metallic nodules found on the sea floor could be acting as “geobatteries”, creating oxygen in the deep sea, plus a surprising finding involving Dyson Spheres that may hint at the existence of advanced alien life. In round two the panelists discuss their cultural highlights of the year. On the line up is an installation in London called ‘Breathing with the Forest', a time-travel novel called ‘The Other Valley', the stage show reimagining of ‘Dr Stangelove' and an absurdist comedy about climate diplomacy called ‘Rumours'. Round three is a quiz for the audience asking questions like, do warm drinks taste more alcoholic than cold ones? What animal can be added to milk to initiate the yoghurt-making fermentation process? And which animal can survive with almost no sleep?  And round four celebrates stories that will make you say “Wow!”, plus a moment of good cheer. These include flowers that can sequester nickel and be turned into metal, how brains and other body parts can be brought back from the dead, the discovery of the world's largest coral reef and the invention of a hospital for fungal-infected frogs. On the panel are Rowan Hooper, Catherine de Lange, Sam Wong and Madeleine Cuff. To read more about these stories, visit https://www.newscientist.com/ Learn more about your ad choices. In this special episode of the Kaka Balli Punjabi Podcast, I'm joined by Dr. Vishal Saini (PhD) for a deep dive into the fascinating future of humanity in space, and the profound changes technology and AI could bring to our lives on Earth. Here's what we discuss: SpaceX Catching a Rocket – A Game Changer: We explore SpaceX's incredible feat of catching rockets upon return, a breakthrough that makes space travel more sustainable and economical. We discuss the potential for reduced costs, increased accessibility to space, and how this innovation might reshape industries on Earth. When Will We Leave Earth and Settle Elsewhere? Dr. Saini shares his insights on how long it might take before humanity can seriously consider leaving Earth to live on another planet or moon. What advancements and milestones must we achieve before we can even think about packing our bags for space? Where Will We Live First – The Moon or Mars? We discuss the possibilities and challenges of establishing human habitats on either the Moon or Mars. From the Moon's proximity to Mars's similarities with Earth, we weigh the pros and cons of each and the obstacles we'll face in building a sustainable life off-planet. Simulating Mars on Earth for Astronaut Training: NASA and other space agencies are creating artificial Mars-like environments on Earth to prepare astronauts for life on other planets. Dr. Saini explains how these simulations help us understand the psychological and physical demands of space life, giving us a glimpse into how challenging it will be to adapt to alien conditions. Providing Energy Beyond Earth: Sustaining human life in space demands immense energy resources. We discuss the concept of the Kardashev Scale and the Dyson Sphere—ideas that suggest how advanced civilizations might harness energy from stars. What are the hurdles of producing and storing energy in space, and how might solar energy be adapted for extraterrestrial use? Harnessing Solar Energy in Space – Potential and Challenges: Solar power could be a crucial energy source for space colonies, but there are technical and logistical challenges. Dr. Saini delves into the intricacies of harnessing and distributing solar energy outside Earth's atmosphere, touching on the possibilities and limitations of this technology. Why We Need to Expand Beyond Earth: Given the risks of climate disasters, nuclear war, and other existential threats, we discuss the need for humanity to explore life beyond Earth. Dr. Saini outlines why spreading across planets could be essential for human survival, and what dangers staying confined to Earth might hold. The By-products of Experiments and the Ethics of Research: Experimentation in fields like space exploration often yields unexpected innovations that benefit society. But should we pursue advancements in all areas? We debate the ethical implications of research, balancing potential rewards with the risks. Limited Resources and Human Survival: Earth's resources are finite, and our growing population strains what's available. We discuss how this limitation could propel us toward new planets for resources and survival, and what sacrifices might be needed along the way. Challenges of Time in Space Travel: Time in space operates differently due to relativity, which could complicate long-term space missions and interplanetary life. We discuss the impact of time dilation on human experience, and how future space travelers might perceive time and aging differently. AI and the Future of Education – Is It Redundant? With rapid advancements in AI, Dr. Saini explains how education as we know it might change. Could AI make traditional knowledge-based learning obsolete, focusing instead on creativity and problem-solving skills?

If you’re a super-advanced civilization and you’re running out of energy, there’s a simple solution: Dismantle part of your planetary system to build “megastructures” around your star. Known as Dyson Spheres, they’d gather most of the star’s energy, giving you an almost limitless supply. A recent study has found possible evidence of them. Most or all of the candidate objects are likely to have a natural origin: distant galaxies, or clouds of debris around a star. But astronomers are following up just in case. The “spheres” wouldn’t completely surround a star. Instead, they’d consist of many huge panels in separate orbits around the star. They’d emit heat, so they’d glow in the infrared. So astronomers have been looking for the right kind of infrared glow for years. In the recent study, a team scoured observations of about five million stars within a thousand light-years of Earth. They used many filters to narrow the list. And they came up with seven candidates. All of them are red dwarfs – stars that are much smaller, cooler, and fainter than the Sun. Such stars live a long time – long enough for a civilization to develop and grow – and surround the star with a Dyson Sphere. Two of the candidate stars are near the “head” of one of the fish of Pisces. The figure is low in the east at nightfall, to the left of the bright planet Saturn. The candidates are much too faint to see without a telescope. Script by Damond Benningfield
