Did you know that every product on the shelves at your neighborhood Trader Joe's goes through a rigorous tasting process before we decide to sell it? Rigorous tasting? What the heck does that even mean, Trader Joe's? In a nutshell, it means we don't just offer something for sale because we can; we only offer those things that taste great and represent a great value. To make those decisions, we taste everything – and tasting is, perhaps surprisingly, not the same as eating. It's careful, it's considered, it's… rigorous. Elisabeth (Elise) C. Terlato has worked in the wine industry for five years now, joining the family's company in October of 2018 as the Associate Marketing Manager. In this role, she was responsible for marketing and managing Terlato Wines International's Estate Division portfolio of brands, including Terlato Vineyards, M. Chapoutier, Mathilde Chapoutier, Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier, and Anselmi. Elise is the fourth generation to be involved in the family business, along with her sister, Jo, and brother, Tony. In 2020, Elise was promoted to Digital Marketing Manager, responsible for managing and growing the DTC business through e-commerce, social media, and various other digital platforms. In 2021, she spearheaded and managed two large-scale projects: the renovation and launch of Terlato.com and the Uncorked.com websites. In 2022, Elise advanced to Marketing Manager for Terlato's Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) side of the business. In this role, she is responsible for all direct marketing from family wineries, which includes increasing, creating, and analyzing promotions and programs to drive the Terlato Wine Group's (TWG) e-commerce business, assisting in all electronic and physical communications (including newsletters and websites), managing and executing content, driving business to websites, and managing all loyalty and club programming. Prior to joining Terlato, Elise worked at Foote, Cone & Belding (FCB) Global Chicago for three and a half years, where she progressed from an Assistant Account Executive to Account Executive. At FCB, she managed clients such as Choose Chicago, Bioverativ, and Johnson & Johnson. Additionally, she produced advertisements for high-profile brands such as Mazzoni and Adelphi scotch whisky, which were published in national beverage publications including Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits, and The Tasting Panel. Elise also has experience working at Modern Luxury Publications in their marketing department. During her internships at the Il Poggione and GAJA wineries in the Tuscan and Piedmont regions of Italy, Elise studied the retail and production sides of the wine industry. She holds a bachelor's degree from Florida's University of Miami and is continuing her wine education with a WSET II (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) certificate and diploma in Wine Management and Gastronomy from Le Cordon Bleu in London. In this episode… For more than 50 years, Terlato Wines International has been influential in the wine and spirits industry. They introduced Pinot Grigio to America, revolutionized different varietals, and became a well-loved legacy brand. But they've never stopped looking for the next best thing for consumers across the globe, which is why they've grown year after year. According to Elise Terlato, much of the brand's success comes from the ability to adapt, utilize cutting-edge technologies, and meet the consumer where they are. The digital world will only continue to expand, so it's crucial that wineries — including legacy brands — learn how to navigate this space and build their online presence. So if you're a brand that wants to embrace digital and reach a wider audience, what does Elise recommend? In this episode of VINTed, Scout Driscoll is in conversation with Elise Terlato, DTC Marketing Manager at Terlato Wines International, to talk about legacy brands, marketing to the modern consumer, and getting involved in the digital world. Elise shares how Terlato is elevating and partnering with other brands, their strategies for connecting with younger consumers, and their mission to promote sustainability through their wineries and vineyards.

She founded LA COM Wine Agency, a licensed wine importing company and a strategic P.R. and communications firm focused on wine and food industry. If you want to learn more visit: https://theitalianwinegirl.com/ About today's guest producers: 2010. Recruited by a hotelier who had just acquired an estate in the gorgeous Euganean Hills in Italy's Veneto region, Elisa was asked to help restore the estate's vineyards, which had been abandoned for decades. She was inspired to express all of those elements in her wines. She discovered that Fior d'Arancio, a unique variety of Yellow Muscat (Moscato Giallo) found in the area, grows particularly well in the volcanic terroir of the Euganean Hills. One of Elisa's main goals has been to promote the versatility of the sweet sparkling wine, which is traditionally served as a dessert wine. She proposes it as an aperitif as well, given its marked minerality. To achieve her goal, Elisa has involved owners of restaurants and wine bars, sommeliers and opinion leaders in the world of food and wine in her project, as well as anyone with the talent and imagination to make a contribution toward demonstrating the versatility of the Moscato Fior d'Arancio grape and driving her innovative project forward. Two people who were key to the success of Maeli are Gianluca and Desiderio Bisol, respectively the CEO and winemaker of the eponymous Prosecco winery in Valdobbiadene, who believed and invested in the project from the beginning. In addition to the award-winning Maeli Moscato Fior d'Arancio DOCG, Elisa also produces a still white wine, Bianco Infinito, made from her favored Moscato Giallo. The wine stands out for the aromatics and structure that are the result of the grapes from which it is made. Rosso Infinito, a red blend, and Dila, a traditional method sparkling wine, complete the Maeli portfolio. Even in these times of constant change, there’s one thing that’s remained constant, and that’s our commitment to innovating and developing new products to bring to our stores. We’ve made some adjustments to the way our Tasting Panel meets – who knew video conference tasting could be a thing? – but the basic function of the panel remains the same today as it’s ever been… making sure we’re bringing you delicious tastes from around the globe, and offering them at great values, every day. In this episode of Inside Trader Joe’s, we’re taking you inside the Tasting Panel, in today’s format. We’ll talk about how the changes have impacted product development, and we’ll hear about some new initiatives we’ve put in place to help us find vendors who might not have had access to our Tasting Panel process in days past. To kickoff new episodes of the Wine Enthusiast Podcast, host and Managing Editor Lauren Buzzeo asks members of our Tasting Panel to tackle some of the toughest wine myths out there today, confirming what's true and noteworthy versus what's utter BS and what's utterly forgettable.
We sure did get an Olive Oil education during this episode with Arden Coturri. Her passion for olive oil started back in the early 1990's and decided that they would plant a family olive grove with trees that were imported from Italy - (in fact about 10,000 tiny plants were brought over that needed to be propagated). Wanting to get more knowledge, Arden enrolled in a class through UC Davis on the sensory of olive oil. Turns out that Arden has such good sensory evaluation skills, the California Olive Oil Council approached her to become an olive oil taster. Arden has been a member of the California Olive Oil Council's Tasting Panel for over 20 years. This is a panel that blind tastes oil from their members to distinguish whether or not their oil is worthy of having 'Extra Virgin' on their label for that harvest. As complete novices, she walked us through a tasting of 6 different oils (in beautiful Spanish blue glasses), teaching us about what makes a good olive oil, what the different imperfections taste like, how they go about the process of tasting and what it really means for their members. Arden taught us what to look for on a label and how to make purchasing decisions. Of course, the oil that Arden produces for the family winery; Winery Sixteen 600 was the best of the lineup. It was a great conversation and hopefully it will give you some insight the next time you grab the bottle that has been sitting in the back of the cupboard for five years.

We've assembled a panel of podcasters and a longtime WhiskyCast listener for this Tasting Panel session recorded on location at the Podcast Movement 2018 conference in Philadelphia. Elsie Escobar, Chris Liro, Sean MacCready, and Mike Joachim nosed and tasted a flight of rye whiskies: Heaven Hill's Pikesville Rye, Beam's Old Overholt Bottled in Bond Rye, and High West's 2018 edition of its Yippee Ki-Yay rye.
At Trader Joe’s, values aren’t just great deals on great products. They’re also the values we live by, every day in every neighborhood store. We’ll share the ways we put those values into practice when we take you inside our (top-secret) Tasting Panel, where decisions are being made about what products to put on Trader Joe’s shelves. Then, Joe himself (yes, there is a Trader Joe) helps explain how it all began… including why we wear those oh-so-stylish Hawaiian shirts. Episode 2 Transcript (PDF)
This month, we put our panel to the test and had them taste three whiskies blind. The only thing Davin de Kergommeaux, Mark Bylok, and Frank McDonald knew was that they were tasting peated single malts from Scotland, and we'll keep you guessing, too...right up until we reveal the whiskies and surprise all three panelists! Our panel gathered at the Wonderful World of Whisky Show at the NAV Centre in Cornwall, Ontario, and we're grateful to Ian Bentley and the entire staff of the NAV Centre for their help in making this episode possible.
This time around, we're on the road in Victoria, British Columbia to taste four whiskies from four different countries with some of the folks from The Strath whisky and spirits shop as part of the annual Victoria Whisky Festival. Pat Dunlop, Adam Bradshaw, Dan Rampling, and Emily de Korte tasted the Bernheim 7-year-old Straight Wheat Whiskey from Kentucky, Penderyn's Madeira Finish Welsh single malt, the Glenglassaugh Revival single malt from Scotland, and Nikka's Coffey Malt from Japan.
With the holiday season in full swing, we turned to three "wise men" for this month's Tasting Panel and gave them three single malt Scotch whiskies to taste and score. Mike Farley, Angelo Veneziano, and Sam Speers tasted the Oban 14, The Glenburgie 15 from the Ballantine's Single Malt Series, and the 18-year-old Highland Park Full Volume. There's also a bonus holiday dram at the end, too.
This time around, we're tasting Highland single malts with a panel of Canadian whisky lovers at the New Brunswick Spirits Festival in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Rhonda Moore, Tanya Gracie, and Tyrone Cotie sat down to nose and taste the Glenfiddich Solera Reserve 15-year-old single malt, The Dalmore 12, and the Talisker 10, and also shared their stories of visiting Glenfiddich and Talisker. We'll also crown a new Whisky Club of the Month and tell you how you can be part of a tasting panel for an upcoming episode.
No, we're not tasting Australian Bourbons...we have Australians tasting Bourbons this time around! Lilith Morgan and Chris Tatzenko make the long trip from Australia to the U.S. each year for the Kentucky Bourbon Festival, and stopped by the WhiskyCast studio during a side trip to New York City. Colton Smith joined them to taste four Bourbons: the Four Roses Al Young 50th Anniversary Limited Edition Small Batch, the 2o17 Old Forester Birthday Bourbon, the 2017 Angel's Envy Cask Strength limited edition, and a special bottling of Weller 107 for Julio's Liquors in Massachusetts that blends together two barrels of Bourbon.
We're back with a new name, but with the same goal of opening up whisky conversation as regular whisky lovers taste, rate, and debate whiskies from around the world! This month, we're in Houston, Texas at Reserve 101, one of the city's best whisky bars, to taste the Brenne 10-year-old French single malt, the Glen Grant 18-year-old single malt, and Sonoma County Distilling's Cherrywood Rye from California. We should note that our panel was recorded before Hurricane Harvey devastated many parts of Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast. Fortunately, the bar and our panelists - Reserve 101 owner Mike Raymond, bartender Christa Havican, and Houston whisky writer Nath Pizzolatto - all made it through the flooding safely. However, many of their friends and neighbors were less fortunate, and we'll tell you how you can support the region's recovery efforts, too.
The pilot episode (do we call podcast premiere’s pilots?) of Napa Register Radio, hosted and created by Yousef Baig. After an introduction from Baig on what listeners can expect from Napa Register Radio, reporters Howard Yune and Maria Sestito visit the show to talk about the Napa High School hazing incident and what this story says about bullying and the desire to be accepted. Later, St. Helena Star editor Dave Stoneberg explains how the 10-year-old SHS/Napa Valley Vintners Tasting Panel came to be as well as some high-end cabernets worth trying. In sports, executive sports editor Marty James joins Baig for a discussion on the Napa Valley Unified School District’s decision to pursue a move from the Sac-Joaquin Section to the North Coast and what it says about the current state of Napa’s athletic programs.LISTEN HEREStay tuned for episode 2.
