Welcome to the What's Next! Podcast with Tiffani Bova. This week, I'm listening back on a conversation with Allen Adamson and I wanted to share it with you too. Allen is a noted industry expert in all disciplines of branding and the Co-Founder of Metaforce. He is also a published author with multiple marketing titles including Shift Ahead, Brand Simple, and The Edge. Prior to co-founding Metaforce, Allen was the Chairman of North America of Landor Associates, a global branding firm. Before joining Lander, Allen was an executive at Unilever and held senior management positions at Ogilvy & Mather and DMB&B. Allen is also a sought-after industry commentator and has appeared on shows such as NBC's Today Show and Fox Business Network's Closing Bell. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… individuals who are trying to build a memorable brand with advertising, social media, product design and user interfaces to convey a story which resonates with employees and customers. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… find your relevance! Get out of your marketing bubble and don't wait for things to go wrong to step on the gas and shift your strategy. Once the marketplace signals your misstep, it's too late. Shifting ahead to success is all about being proactive and attentive and learning not just to listen passively, but to watch actively and ask the right questions! WHAT I LOVE MOST… I loved talking about what “brand” truly is and how we can better understand it. It is one of the most misunderstood concepts in business and sales today. Everyone is chasing after what they think it means, and often this leads to a sense of disingenuousness. With 98% of higher education institutions looking the same and offering similar programs, the challenge for any single institution to stand out is immense. This episode of Changing Higher Ed, features Allen Adamson, co-founder of MetaForce, discussing the importance of branding and marketing in differentiating higher education institutions in an oversaturated homogeneous market. Adamson shares his insights from his vast experience in branding across various industries, emphasizing the need for higher education institutions to stand out to attract enrollment. Key Discussion Points The Branding Challenge in Higher Education: Higher education faces an oversupply of institutions and an undersupply of students, creating a critical need for effective branding and marketing strategies to attract and retain students. Why Higher Ed Institutions Should Look Outside the Industry for Branding and Marketing: Higher education institutions can benefit from adopting innovative marketing strategies proven successful in other sectors, enhancing their distinctiveness and appeal. Creating Unique Institution Identities: Crafting unique identities that resonate with potential students is essential. Institutions should leverage their unique heritage, location, or academic strengths to form a compelling brand identity. Strategies for Differentiation and Growth: Differentiation in a crowded market requires institutions to offer unique educational experiences and communicate these differences through strategic marketing effectively. Peripheral Vision in Branding: Institutions should extend their view beyond direct competitors and the education sector to identify unique positioning strategies and innovations from the broader market. The Role of Consensus in Decision Making: The challenges of consensus-driven decision-making within universities often lead to diluted branding strategies. More decisive leadership could enable stronger and clearer branding initiatives. Importance of Simplifying the Brand Message: A clear and simple brand message is crucial for effective communication. Institutions should focus on conveying a few key strengths or unique attributes to avoid overwhelming potential students. Differentiation Through Student Outcomes: Emphasizing unique student outcomes and success stories can differentiate an institution more effectively than focusing solely on features and facilities. Signature Experiences and Social Proof: Developing signature experiences that define an institution's brand and leveraging positive student testimonials can significantly enhance reputation and attractiveness. Actionable Insights Over Descriptive Content: Shifting focus from describing institutional offerings to highlighting actionable outcomes and real-world applications can make branding more effective and relatable. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Simplify and strategize: Prioritize simplicity in ideas for enhanced execution. Being ahead of the curve involves selecting straightforward concepts that can be brilliantly executed. Expand horizons: Break free from the confines of the usual environment. Look beyond the immediate surroundings and industry standards. Being ahead of the curve means seeking inspiration from diverse sectors and preparing for future market trends. Pursue excellence: Choose ideas that can be executed exceptionally rather than settling for mediocrity. Being ahead of the curve allows for iterative improvements, ensuring that when the timing is right, the execution is flawless, setting you apart from competitors. This is the ninth episode of Market with me Quikly — a podcast to inform, educate and assist B2C marketers in doing their jobs just a little bit better. We've been thinking a lot about how marketers re-engage customers and accelerate sales as states and businesses start opening back up. We have a free webinar coming up with Vibes on how to do just that with email & SMS marketing. If you're listening to this before Thursday, May 28 at 10:30 a.m., here's the link to join: https://hq.quikly.com/en/webinar-reengage-customers-accelerate-sales For a replay of this webinar after May 28, head to https://www.quikly.com/ On this same topic and how marketers can navigate the uncertain and unstable climate ahead, I got the insight from a noted industry expert in all disciplines of branding — Allen Adamson. The book talks about how organizations can avoid to become paralyzed by the accelerating pace of change in markets, customer needs, technologies and the business models they power. Or, as the sub-title says: “How the best companies stay relevant in a fast-changing world.” Together with his co-author professor Joel Steckel, Allen uses first-hand accounts and detailed case studies to explain how these organizations recognize when it’s time to change direction, and how they pull off the feat of leaping forward while holding firm to a company’s reputation, credibility, and trustworthiness. The authors present a simple framework for maintaining the balance and flexibility essential to thriving in a marketplace where change is the only constant.

How do you profit from the profound demographic shift that's coming ahead? If you want to predict the future with accuracy, only one crystal ball will do and that's people by the numbers. By looking at demographics, we can predict the future from commercial to social to political to cultural trends. Counting people reveals what the trend will be over the next several years. That's because it's based on what people are doing from fertility to the location, meaning where they live and to aging. For instance, women are on the rise in the workforce nowadays, shattering glass ceilings. Meanwhile, Gen Y or the Millennials, the largest generation in history, are going to be moving into their own home soon. These are two of the key changes that will be determining the fortunes and futures of many people and what is going to happen over the next several years. Do you want to get ahead in your field or in real estate? Pay attention to the trends we're about to discuss with my guest, internationally respected demographer Ken Gronbach. Why is it that some organizations can continually evolve to meet the times and the marketplace, and others can’t? How do some businesses recognize the right moment to shift, and […]

Did you read that CVS is buying Aetna and Japan’s Fujifilm is buying Xerox? JAB Holding Co, which already owns Krispy Kreme, Panera, and Keurig, is now snapping up Dr. Pepper Snapple? And Arbys recently swallowed Buffalo Wild Wings restaurants. What’s happening here? Allen Adamson knows: Aetna, Xerox, Dr. Pepper Snapple, Buffalo Wild Wings, and dozens upon dozens of other brand-name companies are failing to stay relevant in our fast-changing world, and are ceasing to survive as independent companies, or worse, like Toys R Us, closing up shop altogether. Allen, a noted industry expert in all disciplines of branding is a counselor to some of the country’s most successful companies. He is a co-founder and Managing Partner of Metaforce. Along with Joel Steckel, a vice dean at NYU’s Stern School of Business, Allen has written a compelling new book: Shift Ahead: How the Best Companies Stay Relevant in a Fast-Changing World. Shift Ahead spells out the warning signs that it’s time for reinvention, and exactly what separates the survivors – and those companies that thrive – from the businesses destined for the corporate graveyard. That’s true of Blockbuster and Kodak and Toys R Us, Allen tells host and reputation coach Dean Rotbart, and that’s also true of small businesses and professional practices. To learn just how you can stay ahead, hear what Allen has to say on this week’s Monday Morning Radio. In this week’s “Marketing Today,” Alan talks to Allen Adamson, co-founder and managing partner of the marketing company, Metaforce. Adamson is also the author of four books, the latest of which is “Shift Ahead: How the Best Companies Stay Relevant in a Fast-Changing World.” During his conversation with Alan, Adamson touches on a wide variety of topics. In addition to talking about the issue facing companies today that serves as the title of his book, he addresses the challenge of people’s resistance to change — though, intellectually, they know they should embrace it — and how it affects the companies they work for and lead. “The notion is familiar is comfortable,” says Adamson. “Yesterday is more comfortable than tomorrow. You have to go in with the mindset that human nature is resistant to change.” He later weighs in on how a CMO can be an effective change agent for their company, something he refers to as “See and Seize.” In doing so, Adamson talks about the approach a successful CMO should employ: “The most successful ones need to be champions of what’s happening in the marketplace and help the organization evolve. And the most successful ones move fast.” Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today” podcast include: Adamson describes the arc of his career, from agency life to working on the client side and in the world of branding. (1:47) Adamson talks about his latest book and the nature of his collaboration with co-author, Joel Steckel. (4:42) Adamson lists the convergence of factors contributing to the accelerating pace of change facing companies today. (6:59) Cruise Control and The Gravitational Pull of Marty Crane’s Chair. (8:59) What happens when companies play too much tennis and not enough golf. (11:50) Adamson relates his version of the Kodak moment; it’s not a pretty picture. (15:34) Adamson on his latest book: “It’s a business book for business leaders.” (22:19) “What gets me up in the morning is a problem that isn’t easy.” (26:05) Support the show.
