Ed Wood died the better part of a half-century ago, and to this day his reputation as the world's worst filmmaker persists. Even in this era when seemingly everything can be reclaimed, few have made the effort for Plan 9 from Outer Space, Glen or Glenda, or Night of the Ghouls, making all the more compelling a new book that does so without necessarily making the case for Wood as a strictly speaking good filmmaker. The author is Will Sloan and the book Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA, which studies Wood's filmography as a genuinely dream-like and ideologically... if not driven, then at least somewhat occupied with major questions of identity. The work shows in Sloan's book, which contains key biographical information, rundowns of Wood's novelistic career, and a larger consideration of what constitutes a bad movie. I was extremely pleased to speak with him about these and sundry other subjects.

Kom kerst vieren in Kasteel De Haar. The USSF described its plans to defend US space capabilities and maintain the Joint Force's “long-range kill chains and global power projection” to achieve short, mid, and long-term “space-superiority,” in a manual published for experts in the military community Thursday. Offensive counterspace operations include orbital strikes, terrestrial strikes, and space link interdictions — which include electromagnetic and cybernetwork attacks carried out to “disrupt, deny, or degrade an enemy's critical space links.”“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” Psalm 115:16 (KJB) On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, there is a battle brewing in the heavens and it is about to bring an end times storm to the inhabitants of the Earth. Will we see some of it before the Rapture? Considering we are in the dispensational overlap we just might. Call me crazy, but I believe that the fallen angels are already here and they are ready to starting ‘handling business'. More than five years after it was created, the Space Force, the most derided and misunderstood branch of the U.S. military, has emerged as a vital part of the American war machine as space becomes increasingly militarized. But even its leaders acknowledge that they are still honing their mission while jousting with adversaries, such as China, that are moving quickly and conducting combat-like operations in orbit. Can the United States conquer space? There are entities that inhabit what we call Outer Space, and if you believe your King James Bible, you know that this is a creature that cannot be tamed. On this episode, the US Space Force is getting ready for a losing battle that will conquer the whole world, and we show you just how close we are to it. Also, we have end times updates from Europe, the Middle East and the United Nations.

Nicole Stott had a remarkable career with NASA, logging more than 100 days in outer space.  Her time on the International Space Station drives her appreciation for the importance of cooperation across cultures and national boundaries.  On this Blue Sky episode, she describes lessons learned from her time as an astronaut, and the inspiring work she does today through the Space For Art Foundation, and her optimistic and solutions-oriented approach to life.    Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Nicole Stott  This chapter introduces Nicole Stott, a retired NASA astronaut, aquanaut, engineer, artist, and author. It highlights her unique experiences as one of fewer than 600 people to have flown in space, her inspiration from her father, and her journey into aeronautical engineering after a personal tragedy.  03:42 From Tragedy to Astronaut  Nicole shares the profound impact of her father's tragic death in a plane crash on her career path, explaining how it fueled her desire to understand how things fly, leading to aeronautical engineering and eventually NASA. She also touches on her ‘aquanaut' experience, spending 18 days underwater as training for spaceflight.  12:07 The Power of Optimism in Space  Nicole discusses the ‘here's how we can' approach essential for space travel, contrasting it with pessimism, and emphasizing the importance of teamwork in an international setting. She details her missions on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, highlighting the global collaboration required for such complex endeavors.  19:18 Earth as Spaceship, Us as Crewmates  Nicole reflects on the profound perspective gained from space, seeing Earth's thin atmosphere as a fragile ‘thin blue line' and the International Space Station's hull as a parallel. This realization fuels her belief that all humans are ‘crewmates' on ‘Spaceship Earth,' inspiring a collective mission to protect our planet.  27:01 Art, Space, and Healing  Nicole shares her passion for art, which developed from a young age and continued during her space missions, where she created the first watercolor painting in space. This passion led her to establish the Space for Art Foundation, which uses space-themed art therapy to inspire and unite children in pediatric hospitals and refugee centers worldwide.  34:38 The Future of Space and Humanity  Nicole discusses the current landscape of space exploration, including public-private partnerships with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, and the broader motivations behind these endeavors. She also highlights the ‘never underestimate the importance of bugs' principle, emphasizing that small individual actions can lead to significant planetary solutions.  45:12 Mars, The Moon, and Space Solar Power  Nicole addresses the potential for space-based solar power, highlighting its significant cost but comparing it to other large global expenditures. She concludes by expressing her optimism about humans landing on Mars within the next 30-50 years, with the Moon serving as a crucial steppingstone for this ambitious journey.

For generations, Ed Wood has been known as “the worst director of all time.” This sympathetic critical study repositions the director of Plan 9 from Outer Space as a maverick independent whose work challenges the boundary between “bad” and “good.” The subject of a Tim Burton biopic, Will Sloan reappraises Wood as a more interesting and disruptive figure. This week we're looking at the arch-cult film from 1988, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Its released was botched entirely by the distributor who were almost deliberately defiant in their unwillingness to screen the movie on much more than a few screens. It found its legs on cable and VHS where it was an instant hit and went on to launch a merchandising empire culminating in a video game and one of Universal Studios' most popular attractions at Halloween Horror Nights. When a UFO that looks an awful lot like a circus tent lands in Crescent Cove and aliens that look an awful lot like circus clowns wander into town with murder and mayhem in mind its up to a local cop, his ex-girlfriend, and her manchild boyfriend to stop them in their tracks and save Crescent Cove. Directed by the Chiodo Brothers, who were known for ambitious special effects, stop motion animation, and puppetry with credits under their belt like Elf, Critters, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, it's a send up of 50's alien invasion movies with a plot that's almost one-to-one for the classic 1958 film, The Blob. We love it. You love it. Let's love it together. This week, we're diving into one of the weirdest invasions ever committed to celluloid: Killer Klowns from Outer Space. When a group of extraterrestrial circus clowns land in a small town, they don't come in peace... unless “peace” involves cotton candy cocoons, shadow puppet executions, and balloon animal bloodhounds. Topics include: how the Chiodo Brothers' low-budget labor of love turned into a cult phenomenon, why the clown aesthetic is so effective (and so unsettling), and how this movie manages to be both a parody of '50s B-movies and an earnest entry in the horror-comedy canon. Along the way, we talk creature effects, missed sequel opportunities, and more! We closed the first half at a key point, exploring the meaning of the blood of the Lamb in the final plague of Exodus, and we'll now begin with the parting of the Sea. Both, it turns out, are closely connected with the ideas weaved through the accounts of Creation and the Flood in Genesis, which in turn points to that of the salvation in Christ. And the key to understanding that is found in what the Sea and its waters meant for the ancients. Ep. 335: Will Sloan on Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA about the director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week the writer and podcaster Will Sloan visits to discuss his new book, Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA, a reconsideration of the filmmaker who notoriously symbolized the bottom of the barrel in movies. Sloan's book avoids the usual so-bad-it's-good look at Ed Wood and instead appreciates the strange dreamlike spaces opened up by the likes of Plan 9 from Outer Space, the “accidental” experiments of his shoe-string-budget movies, and the poignant personal resonance of Glen or Glenda and other movies with Wood's identity as a cross-dresser (as memorably chronicled in Tim Burton's Ed Wood). Plus any number of tangents and comparisons that Wood's work seems to invite through its very imperfections. The United Nations has mediated conflicts since its founding in 1945. That domain of involvement extended into space in 1967 with the Outer Space Treaty. Today, their role is increasingly active with more and more nations entering space and the private sector getting into the game. The US's space-related branches, UNOOSA (the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs) and COPUOUS (UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space), are busy. Many years ago, the National Space Society gained permanent UN observer status, which is much less passive than the name sounds. The organization has addressed the committees on more than one occasion and is working to influence the policy for space flight positively. Dr. Rick Jenet has been instrumental in these efforts and joins us in explaining the landscape of newspace, international space efforts, and the organization's future initiatives.Headline Space Shuttle Discovery Controversy: Rod and Isaac discuss the proposed $85 million move of the Space Shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian to Houston, plan that faces obstacles from the Smithsonian, which holds the rights to the shuttle. Main Topic: UNOOSA & Dr. Rick Jenet The National Space Society's UN Observer Status: Dr. Jenet explains that the NSS gained permanent observer status at the UN in 2001. The NSS uses this privilege to inform delegates by providing research and presentations. UNOOSA and COPUOS Explained: Dr. Jenet clarifies that UNOOSA organizes the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). While UNOOSA maintains a registry of space objects, COPUOS is the body of 104 member states that develops legal frameworks. Outer Space Treaty of 1967: Dr. Jenet talks about the Outer Space Treaty, a global treaty dating back to the Cold War era that governs how state actors behave in space. He that the treaty's language on property ownership is being re-examined due to the rise of commercial space activities. Space Traffic Management and Orbital Debris: Dr. Jenet highlights that discussions on space traffic management and orbital debris are in their early stages. These discussions focus on basic tenets like coordination and information sharing. Lunar Activities and Resource Utilization: The development of policies for lunar exploration and resource extraction is also an area of new activity. UNOOSA's "Action Team for Lunar Activities Consultation," with co-chairs from Romania and Pakistan, coordinates the future of humanity's return to the moon by aligning different national initiatives. The "Regulation Sandbox" Concept: Dr. Jenet discusses the "regulation sandbox" concept, where existing regulations for an area with commercial potential, for example a lunar ice deposit, are set aside for a limited time to allow a new set of rules to be tested. This concept could be applied more boradly to space launch or ISRU. Why the Public Should Care: Dr. Jenet emphasizes that the public should care about these efforts because these high-level discussions will lead to international laws governing the behavior of all actors in space, including private companies and entrepreneurs. Early awareness of these frameworks will be less painful for startups later on. These show notes have been truncated due to length. Synopsis In a quiet town, where the stars are shining and the street youths are just beginning a wild night of tomfoolery, a meteor falls from the sky. Landing in a farmer's yard, people begin to investigate the crash, only to find a large and otherworldly circus tent. Everyone gets a little more clown than they bargained for, and the occupants of this circus tent start a menacing rampage on the town. Will the police stop them? Will the sexy young college couple stop them? Will the ice cream man stop them?  Review of Killer Klowns From Outer Space Killer Klowns from Outer Space has long been one of my favorite horror movies. It's low budget and very over the top, but I find it charming and entertaining to watch clowns wrap people in cotton candy cocoons that burn their flesh off. The movie stays fresh for me as every scene depicts the clowns using some new form of weapon that looks like a sundry clown paraphernalia. I like the characters, especially the two young dudes trying to get girls by selling ice cream, and the boyfriend and ex-boyfriend of Debbie, who both seem to be dating her at the same time, at moments in this film. However, the true bow that ties this movie together is the clowns. They have a really unique design and they border the line of over-the-top silliness and menace that gives me the creeps in a good way.  Score 10/10
