It's that time again! It's October. The sun goes down in the afternoon now. Night has a chill. And at CVS and Walgreens, they are already putting up the Christmas decorations. That's right, it's Halloween. But none of that for us! We are firmly planted in autumn. As Ray Bradbury once wrote, “Something, something, something, autumn something.” By Ray Bradbury. We have enough show here to stuff your pillowcase, so grab a bag of candy and settle back. Howard Berger and Marshall Julius are here to discuss their new book, Making Monsters, inside stories from the creators of Hollywood's most iconic creatures. This is a terrific book, basically it's a high school yearbook for professional monster kids. Rick Baker, Tom Savini, Michael Giacchino, Larry Karaszewski, Ve Neill, Richard Edlund, Derek Mears, Bill Corso, David Dastmalchian, Mick Garris, Mike Mendez. The list goes on and on and on. Monster kids who grew up but never put it away, and followed their passions right into show business. Packed with photos and interviews, it's really a terrific piece. Making Monsters, by Howard Berger. The Academy Award winning make up artist, he is the B in KNB FX and Marshall Julius, author and film critic and - get this – he's British. He's from the United States of Britain. Daren Docterman is also here. Daren is an illustrator and set designer, he's worked on The Abyss, Monster House, Master and Commander, he was the VFX supervisor on the director's cut of Star Trek - The Motion Picture. He, along with Mark Altman and Ashley Miller, make up The Inglourious Trexperts. Check out that podcast. And, like Howard Berger and Marshall Julius. He's a pal. We've had meals. Quite a few. Daren Dochterman. True Tales From Weirdsville takes a deep dive into American International Pictures and it's genre output in the '50s and '60s. It gave us Roger Corman, It Conquered The World, Invasion Of The Saucer Men, The Amazing Colossal Man, I Was a Teenage Werewolf. And then it segued into the '60s with the Vincent Price / Edgar Allen Poe films like The House Of Usher, The Pit and The Pendulum, and so and and so forth. And then, as a Halloween bonus, we're going to go back into the archives and present you the True Tales we did on Orson Welles' War Of The Worlds broadcast. It's all here. It's all for you. And now, I can hear the kids at the door, and so it is on to our filthy business.

On 10th October, 1967 a treaty went into force that has gone on to become the backbone for all international space law – a United Nations-approved agreement known as the The Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, but better known today as the Outer Space Treaty. It's a relatively succinct document of just 17 articles, some as short as a single sentence, but it represented a lot of fundamentally very challenging cooperation at the time. Not least because it came about when the Cold War was in full swing, and both the United States and the Soviet Union wanted to prevent the expansion of the nuclear arms race into space.  In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain why the principles of the Antarctic Treaty of 1959 turned out to be a good fit for rules on what can and can't be done in outer space; revisit everyone's favourite topic of property law in the 13th century; and discuss whether Elon Musk will, according to the law, own other planets if he lands on them. Ed Wood died the better part of a half-century ago, and to this day his reputation as the world's worst filmmaker persists. Even in this era when seemingly everything can be reclaimed, few have made the effort for Plan 9 from Outer Space, Glen or Glenda, or Night of the Ghouls, making all the more compelling a new book that does so without necessarily making the case for Wood as a strictly speaking good filmmaker. The author is Will Sloan and the book Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA, which studies Wood's filmography as a genuinely dream-like and ideologically... if not driven, then at least somewhat occupied with major questions of identity. The work shows in Sloan's book, which contains key biographical information, rundowns of Wood's novelistic career, and a larger consideration of what constitutes a bad movie. I was extremely pleased to speak with him about these and sundry other subjects.

The Quatermass Xperiment (1955), Quatermass 2 (1957), Quatermass and the Pit (1967) Everyone knows the name Hammer Films (at least, we hope they do!) but most people associate it with gothic horror, particularly their reimagining of the Universal classic Frankenstein in The Curse of Frankenstein (1957). Yet Hammer had been around long before Peter Cushing breathed life into that first stitched-together corpse. Founded in the 1930s as a distribution company, the studio gradually moved into producing films, often adapted from popular TV and radio series. In 1953, the BBC aired a six-part serial, The Quatermass Experiment. Hammer quickly recognized its potential, adapted it into a feature film, and in doing so set itself firmly on the path toward becoming “the studio that dripped blood.” In this episode, we cover all three Quatermass films. While they lean more toward science fiction than Hammer's later gothic output, they are steeped in horror... and we think they're well worth your time. Films mentioned in this episode: And Now the Screaming Starts (1973), Asylum (1972), Brides of Dracula (1960), The Curse of Frankenstein (1957), Curse of the Werewolf (1961), Dracula Prince of Darkness (1966), Dr. Jekyll and Sister Hyde (1971), The Gorgon (1964), Horror of Dracula (1958), I Married a Monster from Outer Space (1958), The Incredible Melting Man (1977), Inhumanwich! (2016), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), It Came from Beneath the Sea (1953), It Conquered the World (1956), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), Legend of the Seven Golden Vampires (1974), Masque of the Red Death (1964), Monster Club (1981), Nineteen Eighty-Four (1954), Pit Stop (1969), Quatermass Xperiment (1955), Quatermass II (1957), Quatermass and the Pit (1967), Rasputin the Mad Monk (1966), Revenge of Frankenstein (1958), Scars of Dracula (1970), The Stone Tape (1972), The Vampire Lovers (1970), Vault of Horror (1973), X – The Unknown (1956)

The USSF described its plans to defend US space capabilities and maintain the Joint Force's “long-range kill chains and global power projection” to achieve short, mid, and long-term “space-superiority,” in a manual published for experts in the military community Thursday. Offensive counterspace operations include orbital strikes, terrestrial strikes, and space link interdictions — which include electromagnetic and cybernetwork attacks carried out to “disrupt, deny, or degrade an enemy's critical space links.”“The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.” Psalm 115:16 (KJB) On this episode of the Prophecy News Podcast, there is a battle brewing in the heavens and it is about to bring an end times storm to the inhabitants of the Earth. Will we see some of it before the Rapture? Considering we are in the dispensational overlap we just might. Call me crazy, but I believe that the fallen angels are already here and they are ready to starting ‘handling business'. More than five years after it was created, the Space Force, the most derided and misunderstood branch of the U.S. military, has emerged as a vital part of the American war machine as space becomes increasingly militarized. But even its leaders acknowledge that they are still honing their mission while jousting with adversaries, such as China, that are moving quickly and conducting combat-like operations in orbit. Can the United States conquer space? There are entities that inhabit what we call Outer Space, and if you believe your King James Bible, you know that this is a creature that cannot be tamed. On this episode, the US Space Force is getting ready for a losing battle that will conquer the whole world, and we show you just how close we are to it. Also, we have end times updates from Europe, the Middle East and the United Nations.

Nicole Stott had a remarkable career with NASA, logging more than 100 days in outer space.  Her time on the International Space Station drives her appreciation for the importance of cooperation across cultures and national boundaries.  On this Blue Sky episode, she describes lessons learned from her time as an astronaut, and the inspiring work she does today through the Space For Art Foundation, and her optimistic and solutions-oriented approach to life.    Chapters: 00:00 Introduction to Nicole Stott  This chapter introduces Nicole Stott, a retired NASA astronaut, aquanaut, engineer, artist, and author. It highlights her unique experiences as one of fewer than 600 people to have flown in space, her inspiration from her father, and her journey into aeronautical engineering after a personal tragedy.  03:42 From Tragedy to Astronaut  Nicole shares the profound impact of her father's tragic death in a plane crash on her career path, explaining how it fueled her desire to understand how things fly, leading to aeronautical engineering and eventually NASA. She also touches on her ‘aquanaut' experience, spending 18 days underwater as training for spaceflight.  12:07 The Power of Optimism in Space  Nicole discusses the ‘here's how we can' approach essential for space travel, contrasting it with pessimism, and emphasizing the importance of teamwork in an international setting. She details her missions on the Space Shuttle and International Space Station, highlighting the global collaboration required for such complex endeavors.  19:18 Earth as Spaceship, Us as Crewmates  Nicole reflects on the profound perspective gained from space, seeing Earth's thin atmosphere as a fragile ‘thin blue line' and the International Space Station's hull as a parallel. This realization fuels her belief that all humans are ‘crewmates' on ‘Spaceship Earth,' inspiring a collective mission to protect our planet.  27:01 Art, Space, and Healing  Nicole shares her passion for art, which developed from a young age and continued during her space missions, where she created the first watercolor painting in space. This passion led her to establish the Space for Art Foundation, which uses space-themed art therapy to inspire and unite children in pediatric hospitals and refugee centers worldwide.  34:38 The Future of Space and Humanity  Nicole discusses the current landscape of space exploration, including public-private partnerships with companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin, and the broader motivations behind these endeavors. She also highlights the ‘never underestimate the importance of bugs' principle, emphasizing that small individual actions can lead to significant planetary solutions.  45:12 Mars, The Moon, and Space Solar Power  Nicole addresses the potential for space-based solar power, highlighting its significant cost but comparing it to other large global expenditures. She concludes by expressing her optimism about humans landing on Mars within the next 30-50 years, with the Moon serving as a crucial steppingstone for this ambitious journey.

This week we're looking at the arch-cult film from 1988, Killer Klowns From Outer Space. Its released was botched entirely by the distributor who were almost deliberately defiant in their unwillingness to screen the movie on much more than a few screens. It found its legs on cable and VHS where it was an instant hit and went on to launch a merchandising empire culminating in a video game and one of Universal Studios' most popular attractions at Halloween Horror Nights. When a UFO that looks an awful lot like a circus tent lands in Crescent Cove and aliens that look an awful lot like circus clowns wander into town with murder and mayhem in mind its up to a local cop, his ex-girlfriend, and her manchild boyfriend to stop them in their tracks and save Crescent Cove. Directed by the Chiodo Brothers, who were known for ambitious special effects, stop motion animation, and puppetry with credits under their belt like Elf, Critters, and Pee Wee's Big Adventure, it's a send up of 50's alien invasion movies with a plot that's almost one-to-one for the classic 1958 film, The Blob. We love it. You love it. Let's love it together.
