Ep. 335: Will Sloan on Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA about the director of Plan 9 From Outer Space and Glen or Glenda Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw, with your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week the writer and podcaster Will Sloan visits to discuss his new book, Ed Wood: Made in Hollywood USA, a reconsideration of the filmmaker who notoriously symbolized the bottom of the barrel in movies. Sloan's book avoids the usual so-bad-it's-good look at Ed Wood and instead appreciates the strange dreamlike spaces opened up by the likes of Plan 9 from Outer Space, the “accidental” experiments of his shoe-string-budget movies, and the poignant personal resonance of Glen or Glenda and other movies with Wood's identity as a cross-dresser (as memorably chronicled in Tim Burton's Ed Wood). Plus any number of tangents and comparisons that Wood's work seems to invite through its very imperfections. The United Nations has mediated conflicts since its founding in 1945. That domain of involvement extended into space in 1967 with the Outer Space Treaty. Today, their role is increasingly active with more and more nations entering space and the private sector getting into the game. The US's space-related branches, UNOOSA (the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs) and COPUOUS (UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space), are busy. Many years ago, the National Space Society gained permanent UN observer status, which is much less passive than the name sounds. The organization has addressed the committees on more than one occasion and is working to influence the policy for space flight positively. Dr. Rick Jenet has been instrumental in these efforts and joins us in explaining the landscape of newspace, international space efforts, and the organization's future initiatives.Headline Space Shuttle Discovery Controversy: Rod and Isaac discuss the proposed $85 million move of the Space Shuttle Discovery from the Smithsonian to Houston, plan that faces obstacles from the Smithsonian, which holds the rights to the shuttle. Main Topic: UNOOSA & Dr. Rick Jenet The National Space Society's UN Observer Status: Dr. Jenet explains that the NSS gained permanent observer status at the UN in 2001. The NSS uses this privilege to inform delegates by providing research and presentations. UNOOSA and COPUOS Explained: Dr. Jenet clarifies that UNOOSA organizes the Committee on Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). While UNOOSA maintains a registry of space objects, COPUOS is the body of 104 member states that develops legal frameworks. Outer Space Treaty of 1967: Dr. Jenet talks about the Outer Space Treaty, a global treaty dating back to the Cold War era that governs how state actors behave in space. He that the treaty's language on property ownership is being re-examined due to the rise of commercial space activities. Space Traffic Management and Orbital Debris: Dr. Jenet highlights that discussions on space traffic management and orbital debris are in their early stages. These discussions focus on basic tenets like coordination and information sharing. Lunar Activities and Resource Utilization: The development of policies for lunar exploration and resource extraction is also an area of new activity. UNOOSA's "Action Team for Lunar Activities Consultation," with co-chairs from Romania and Pakistan, coordinates the future of humanity's return to the moon by aligning different national initiatives. The "Regulation Sandbox" Concept: Dr. Jenet discusses the "regulation sandbox" concept, where existing regulations for an area with commercial potential, for example a lunar ice deposit, are set aside for a limited time to allow a new set of rules to be tested. This concept could be applied more boradly to space launch or ISRU. Why the Public Should Care: Dr. Jenet emphasizes that the public should care about these efforts because these high-level discussions will lead to international laws governing the behavior of all actors in space, including private companies and entrepreneurs. Early awareness of these frameworks will be less painful for startups later on. These show notes have been truncated due to length. Ed Wood's best film is arguably one of the worst in the history of cinema. What constitutes a movie being "so bad it's good?" Is it unintentional laziness on the filmmaker's behalf? Technical errors, bad acting, all of the above? How does something like this become a cult classic before Tim Burton adapted the making of this film, in Burton's best film? Synopsis In a quiet town, where the stars are shining and the street youths are just beginning a wild night of tomfoolery, a meteor falls from the sky. Landing in a farmer's yard, people begin to investigate the crash, only to find a large and otherworldly circus tent. Everyone gets a little more clown than they bargained for, and the occupants of this circus tent start a menacing rampage on the town. Will the police stop them? Will the sexy young college couple stop them? Will the ice cream man stop them?  Review of Killer Klowns From Outer Space Killer Klowns from Outer Space has long been one of my favorite horror movies. It's low budget and very over the top, but I find it charming and entertaining to watch clowns wrap people in cotton candy cocoons that burn their flesh off. The movie stays fresh for me as every scene depicts the clowns using some new form of weapon that looks like a sundry clown paraphernalia. I like the characters, especially the two young dudes trying to get girls by selling ice cream, and the boyfriend and ex-boyfriend of Debbie, who both seem to be dating her at the same time, at moments in this film. However, the true bow that ties this movie together is the clowns. They have a really unique design and they border the line of over-the-top silliness and menace that gives me the creeps in a good way.  Score 10/10

Odkryj sekrety pracy astronauty i przyszłość polskiej nauki!

What the Riff?!?
1972 - December: Neil Diamond "Hot August Night"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later May 19, 2025 34:29

Neil Diamond is one of the best-selling singer-songwriters of all time.  In August 1972 he performed a series of 10 sold-out shows at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles.  Recordings from this concert would be released as a live double-album entitled Hot August Night later that year in December.  Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York, the child of a Jewish family.  At the age of 16 he was inspired by seeing folk singer Pete Seeger perform at a camp for Jewish children in upstate New York, and received his first guitar shortly thereafter.  This would set the direction of Diamond's career, starting with both taking guitar lessons and writing songs.  After some time barely scraping by as a songwriter, Diamond began to find some success by the mid-60's, most prominently with several songs for The Monkees, including the big hit, "I'm A Believer."  Diamond moved to Los Angeles in 1969, where he recorded some of his bigger solo hits, including the iconic "Sweet Caroline."Many consider "Hot August Night" to be Neil Diamond's best work, capturing the artist at his prime and at the top of his game.  It went to number 5 on the Billboard 200 album chart, and was number 12 for the 1973 year-end chart.  It was number 1 in Australia for 29 weeks in 1973 and 1974, and remains one of the highest selling albums in that country. Neil Diamond retired from touring in 2018 toward the end of his "50 Year Anniversary World Tour" after being diagnosed with Parkinson's disease.  However, Diamond did not retire from music, and continued writing and developing new projects.Wayne brings us this soft rock singer-songwriter live album for this week's podcast. Kentucky WomanThis song is a bonus track on the CD, and many will recognize this song from the remake performed by Deep Purple.  It was written in 1967 and went to number 22 on the charts after its release.  It appeared on the compilation album, "Neil Diamond's Greatest Hits" released in 1968 on Bang records after Diamond left that label.Cherry CherryThe inspiration for this song was an early relationship with a significantly older woman.  This was Diamond's first hit, reaching number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The most familiar studio version of this song was released in mid 1966 on Bang records, and was the final track on Diamond's debut studio album, "The Feel of Neil Diamond."Song Sung BlueThis song was originally released on Diamond's eighth studio album, "Moods."  It was his second number 1 song in the United States, and his last solo #1 song in America to date.  The musical inspiration for the song is Mozart's Piano Concerto #21, second movement.  The lyrics reflect on the power of music to heal when a sad mood is poured into a song. Cracklin' RosieOriginally released in 1970, this song topped the charts and sold over 1 million copies.  The studio version appeared on "Tap Root Manuscript," Diamond's sixth studio album, and was recorded with instrumentation provided by session musicians from the Wrecking Crew. While the lyrics suggest that Rosie is a prostitute, there are tales that it actually refers to a cheap sparkling wine from Canada called "Crackling Rosè."  ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the animated series "Josie and the Pussycats"The animated series "Josie and the Pussycats" and "Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space" concluded its run this month. STAFF PICKS:Ventura Highway by AmericaRob leads off the staff picks with a song inspired by a drive that vocalist and writer Dewey Bunnell took in 1963 on the Pacific Coast.  While his father was changing a flat tire, he and his brother stood on the side of the road near a road sign for Ventura, watching shapes in the clouds, inspiring the lyrics "alligator lizards in the air."Superstition by Stevie WonderLynch brings us the lead single from Wonder's fifteenth studio album "Talking Book."  It's lyrics mention many popular superstitions and their negative consequences.  Stevie Wonder collaborated with Jeff Beck on the demo for this song, and Beck would include his version of "Superstition" on his "Beck, Bogert & Appice" album.Rockin' Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu by Johnny RiversBruce features the song originally recorded in 1957 by Huey "Piano" Smith.  The original version went to number 52 on the pop charts, but the version we all know went to number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Rivers was a member of the Wrecking Crew, and several musicians from that session group played on this single. It Never Rains in Southern California by Albert HammondWayne's closes out the staff picks with a storytelling song about a performer off to make it big.  He fails in his efforts, but wants to hide the failure from those he left behind.  Members of the Wrecking Crew also provide instrumentation on this song that went to number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. NOVELTY TRACK:Crazy Horses by The OsmondsThis surprisingly heavy performance from the Osmonds takes us out for this week.  Thanks for listening to “What the Riff?!?” NOTE: To adjust the loudness of the music or voices, you may adjust the balance on your device. Scientists think they might have found a planet that is "brimming with life," and we're pretty sure whoever lives there is way smarter than earthlings. We learn about a climber who had to be rescued twice in one week because he forgot his phone on the mountain. And we discuss a vintage story about a hiker who was lost and couldn't be rescued because when first responders called him he didn't pick up because he didn't recognize the number. We debate whether it was appropriate for a tennis player to tell her opponent to put on deodorant. We discuss the Oklahoma City bombing documentary, and how hearing the stories of the survivors helped portray the scope of loss. Susie is worried about a kind of hornet that is making its home in her town, and Sarah thinks they might be government drones or psyops. A town in Finland calls itself the home of Santa, but residents are fed up with all the tourists. We consider the backlash about tourism around the world and what's really driving it.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster at https://rocketmoney.com/braincandyVisit https://shopbeam.com/braincandy and use code BRAINCANDY to get our exclusive discount of up to 35% off.For 50% off your order, head to https://www.dailylook.com and use code BRAINCANDYGet 40% off your first box PLUS get a free item in every box for life.
