Let's close out this year in grand style as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (6:48) With 2024 winding down, I open with the latest headlines heading into the final week of the NFL season. I'll uncover the Vikings shocking season behind QB Sam Darnold as they're in control of their own destiny for the top seed in the NFC, battling the Lions for supremacy in the conference. Who'll come out with the #7 seed in the AFC between Denver, Miami and Cincinnati? What about the NFC South with Tampa Bay currently ahead of Atlanta, but the Falcons have the tiebreaker if they end up with the same record? Does Saquon Barkley break Eric Dickerson's single season rushing record? What about his former team, the Giants, winning their first home game this year but lose the chance for the #1 pick in next years' draft? The NFL is gloating about having 65 million people watch at least one minute of the two Christmas Day games on Netflix. You know I have to dump cold water on that. I'll also send my condolences to the Gumbel family as Greg passed away on Friday at the age of 78 due to cancer. (33:00) The second round of the college football playoff commences tomorrow night. I'll get into the top storylines of what to expect, from Boise and Arizona State's chances to move on after gaining first round byes. Will Ohio State exact revenge from an early season loss to Oregon? Can Penn State continue their magical run? How about the Fighting vs. Georgia? I'll have every bit of what the quarterfinals will look like and play out over the next couple of days. (50:03) Is the NBA becoming the WWE? There were a couple of brawls over the weekend with suspension handed down, which begs the question, is physical play in the Association a necessity? A trade was made between the Lakers and Nets as D'Angelo Russell heads back to Brooklyn where Dorian Finney-Smith moves west. The Sacramento Kings canned coach Mike Brown. Was it warranted? Jimmy Butler will stay put in Miami as per president Pat Riley, but what's with this competitive reconditioning phrase because of Butler's absence from the lineup. Is this the new load management? I'll check around the league for the latest as both OKC and Cleveland continue their torrid streaks in the West & East. (1:07:26) Anyone psyched for the NHL Winter Classic? It's on January 1st, correct? It is not and who is playing in the game? The league has dropped the puck on not truly showcasing its signature game as it'll be played on New Year's Eve in Chicago (Wrigley Field) where the Blackhawks will play against the Blues. How about Alexander Ovechkin? He returns from a fractured leg where he scores two goals in two games, is 25 goals away from Wayne Gretzky's all time scoring record. Is this man bionic at the age of 39? I'll see what else is happening around the ice as the New Year is on the horizon. (1:17:38) Another big MLB free agent is off the books as pitcher Corbin Burnes signs with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Did his former team, the Orioles, put up an offer? Actually what is going on in Baltimore as they haven't added anyone of note this offseason to compete with the Yankees and Red Sox in their division. Also, what's the latest with Pete Alonso? Is that Met offer of 3 years for $90 million legit? Gleyber Torres signs with the Tigers for one year. And Teoscar Hernandez re-ups with the Dodgers on a three year deal. (1:25:28) I want to shout out YOU, the followers, subscribers and fans of the podcast. Thank YOU for all of your support. Thank you of banging with me for another year, even if it's your first time, keep coming back as I have LOTS on the board for 2025 that I can't wait to share. Giving Robert F. Kennedy Jr. control of HHS would be disastrous, argues Washington Editor Steve Usdin on the latest BioCentury This Week podcast. Expanding on his Editor's Commentary, Usdin explains why Kennedy would be an unmitigated disaster for FDA, NIH and CMS, for companies that research, develop and manufacture medicines and for people around the world who rely on those companies and agencies. He calls on biopharma leaders to speak out and affirm basic truths, even if it puts them in harm's way.BioCentury's Lauren Martz gives her take on why new data for Blenrep belantamab mafodotin — an oncology therapy withdrawn two years ago — help make the case for introducing new experimental therapies such as the antibody-drug conjugate from GSK earlier in the course of treatment. And Paul Bonanos and his editorial colleagues discuss the recent bolus of West-East deals, including two around anti-PD-(L)1 x VEGF bispecifics: the acquisition of Biotheus by BioNTech for $800 million up front, and the licensing of global rights by Merck & Co. to a program from LaNova Medicines for $588 million. Tom welcomes back Justin Huhn to discuss the uranium markets and his recent webinar. Justin believes that the current low price of uranium is indicative of another inflection point in the uranium industry. This is due to the positive news in June 2021, when Sprott's takeover of Uranium Participation resulted in a surge of interest from investors which led to equities doubling and tripling over the course of the following 3 months. This is leading to the establishment of several new physical funds, providing investors the opportunity to buy uranium at a discount to its Net Asset Value (NAV). The West is facing self-imposed Russian sanctions, making the transportation of uranium more complicated, and resulting in more uranium heading east, while Kazakhstan has formed contracts with both China and Russia for joint ventures. China is looking to rapidly increase its stockpile of uranium, and the G7 nations have recognized this and are working towards excluding Russian influence in the nuclear energy market. This could lead to a structural deficit of 180 million pounds a year in 2023 and uranium funds such as Sprott taking physical pounds off the spot market which could influence the market further. At the same time, public opinion towards nuclear energy is shifting to be more positive and supportive in the West and United States. The anti-nuclear movement of the 70s was driven by significant financial support from fossil fuel lobbyists, however Germany's attempt to expand renewables and shut down reactors has resulted in higher energy costs and one of the dirtiest grids in Europe. In Japan, public opinion is in strong support of nuclear power, while in the US there is also support. Occidental Petroleum's CEO has spoken positively about the potential collaboration between fossil fuels and nuclear, pointing out that the fossil fuels are a limited resource so the companies will need to expand. Non-hunters, anti-hunters and species-preservationists... can those of us who VALUE resource for successful wildlife management rely on any of these groups for support and alignment? Anti-hunters: no, we cannot. They would rather critters and habit fail, than have hunters participate in success for wild-life. Species-preservationist: no again. They don't believe humans are part of the natural world and deny any role hunters can/should play which interacts with wildlife. Non-hunters: yes, we can align values with this group. I believe that absolutely, 100%, the hunting community MUST gain do better to communicate with our non-hunting friends, neighbors, coworkers and family. We will never "recruit, retain, reactivate" our way to a majority position in states like WA, CA, OR and maybe even AZ. The anti-hunting orgs do massive fundraising from West/East coast metropolitan areas, because the population there is disconnected from hunters and wildlife mgmt issues. We must take over the arena of ideas, dialogue and leadership in wildlife mgmt and hunting - and that means sharing our realness, personalizing and normalizing hunting in the minds of non-hunters. I believe this conversation with a non-hunter is interesting to you, and opens the door to more of your stories being shared broadly, even where you're not sure they'll be supported. https://huntingainteasy.podbean.com/ www.instagram.com/huntingainteasy www.instagram.com/howl_org www.howlforwildlife.org

The Friday Newsletter | Daily Gardener Community Historical Events 1731 Birth of Martha Washington (books about this person), the inaugural first lady of the United States. At Mount Vernon, Martha was in charge of the kitchen garden. As mistress of the plantation, she was in charge of entertaining guests and planning the evening meal. This meant that a robust kitchen garden was an absolute necessity. Thus, the kitchen garden is the oldest garden at Mount Vernon. It was installed in 1760, and the grounds have produced edibles now for over 250 years. So while other areas of Mount Vernon have gone through some changes, the kitchen garden or the lower garden remains primarily unchanged from how it was initially used back when the Washingtons lived there. Now George and Martha spent a great deal of time away from the estate. And whenever George Washington would send letters back to Mount Vernon, the last paragraph was reserved for instructions from Martha to the gardener about the kitchen garden. Martha would ask about different crops and suggest planting or collecting seeds. Martha really was a knowledgeable plantswoman, and when it came to the kitchen garden, she was not afraid to make suggestions or changes. Martha knew that the kitchen garden was a reflection of her As George's wife and as the president's wife. And when George and Martha were at Mount Vernon, they hosted an average of 600 guests every single year. And most of those people enjoyed supper at the plantation, and the meal No Doubt featured produce from the kitchen garden. William Spence was the gardener at Mount Vernon. He continued working at Mount Vernon after George Washington's death. In addition, William was s a witness to Martha Washington's will, which he signed on September 22, 1800. 1874 On this day, Ann Pamela Cunningham, founder of the MVLA, gave her farewell address MVLA stands for the Mount Vernon Ladies Association, which was founded in 1853. In 1858, less than five years later, this group of indomitable women purchased Mount Vernon from the George Washington family. By so doing, they saved George Washington's eighteenth-century plantation home from development or destruction. Together with encouragement from tourists, the MVLA worked to restore the home and grounds to their full glory. Ann spoke of the need for continued work in her address: Ladies, the home of Washington is in your charge see to it that you keep It the home of Washington! Let no irreverent hand change it; let no vandal hands desecrate it with the fingers of "progress"! Let one spot, in this grand country of ours, be saved from change. Upon you rests this duty. Today we can say definitively that Ann's advice was followed. Washington's home is in top condition along with the outbuildings and the grounds. The greenhouse, which was in a fire in 1835, was fully restored in 1952. To preserve Washington's view of the Potomac, the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association purchased nearly 500 acres on the other side of the Potomac River, thanks to Mrs. Frances Payne Bolton. The latter ended up organizing one of the country's earliest land trusts. When it came to Mount Vernon, George Washington always dreamed of a fine landscape and beautiful gardens. Many enslaved people and trained gardeners made his dream a reality. George hired his first gardener in 1762. A decade later, he posted an ad that said, "a good Kitchen Gardener is what I want." After seeing the one that Margaret Tilghman Carroll installed at her home, Mount Clare, near Baltimore, George added a greenhouse. In turn, Margaret sent the plans and some plants to help the Washingtons christen their greenhouse. In 1799, one guest at Mount Vernon wrote, "[There] I saw ...English grapes, oranges, limes, and lemons... as well as a great variety of plants and flowers... exquisite in their perfume and delightful to the eye..." 1893 On this day, a witty, thoughtful, and upright citizen of South Yarmouth, Massachusetts, Stephen Sears wrote in his journal about his garden. Stephen kept a journal for posterity, and nature entries are sprinkled throughout his writings in between notes on work, worship, and family. Stephen was a Sunday School teacher, and he wrote that he thought it was "the best thing I can do for the coming generation." On this day in 1893, Stephen was 71 years old. He built a cage around a tree and burned caterpillars. He must have thought them destructive (maybe tent caterpillars?) That spring, he had "plowed [the] garden and planted peas." On June 6, he noted that "summer is here, hot and dry," and then he "transplanted [his] tomato vines and hoed [his] watermelons." Almost every day, Stephen worked in his garden. He watered daily and occasionally added seaweed as a fertilizer. On June 17, after three weeks of no rain, Stephen wrote, "The ground is wet again, and vegetation smiles." At the end of the month, he was clearly frustrated with one particular garden pest: potato bugs. Stephen wrote, If I were to offer [a] sacrifice to the Devil it [w]ould be potato bugs in Lager Beer. . 2003 On this day, an Iraqi scientist named Mahdi Obeidi led US officials, including David Kay, out to his rose garden. Over a decade earlier, in February of 1992, Uday Hussein had told Mahdi Obeidi to hide all the evidence of Iraq's efforts to pursue a nuclear program. So Mahdi gathered up his documents and prototypes and packed them in a fifty-gallon drum. Then Mahdi buried the drum beneath a lotus tree in his backyard. The entire stash remained there undisturbed until America declared war on Iraq. Mahdi's story became a book called, The Bomb in My Garden and tells how Saddam Hussein pursued nukes only to be thwarted by his invasion of Kuwait and honorable people in his own government. After the fall of Baghdad, Dr. Obeidi felt it was finally safe to reveal the secret he had buried in his garden, under a lotustree, no less. Lotus trees have a long history and are known scientifically as the Ziziphus lotus. In Greek mythology, in the Odyssey, the Lotus tree fruit was eaten by the Lotus-Eaters to make them sleepy and to create a false sense of peace and apathy. It was said Romulus planted a sacred Lotus near the temple of Vulcan and that it was still standing seven centuries later, in the time of Pliny the Elder. The English explorer Richard Francis Burton saw a lotus on his travels through the middle east. The Lotus leaves were used to wash the bodies of the dead, and the fruit was sold as a cash crop to travelers. Today the Lotus tree is used as fodder and for hedges. The thorny branches create an effective barrier. The flowers are a favorite of pollinators of all kinds. Grow That Garden Library™ Book Recommendation Where We Bloom by Debra Prinzing This book came out in 2022, and the subtitle is Thirty-Seven Intimate, Inventive and Artistic Studio Spaces Where Floral Passions Find a Place to Blossom. The publisher writes, Step inside the places where flowers come to life. Slow Flowers Society founder Debra Prinzing's new book showcases the beautiful plant- and flower-filled settings of Slow Flowers designers, farmer-florists, and growers. Each environment reflects the personality and aesthetic style of its owner, offering great ideas to inspire the design, organization, and functionality of your creative studio. Visit their spaces and read about their floral passions. Debra profiles thirty-seven studio spaces for floral aficionados of all kinds in this book. Here's how she introduces Lori Poliski's Woodinville, Washington, modern homestead - a former horse barn converted into a studio with function and beauty in mind: Lori Poliski was a gardener long before she formed Flori, her design studio based in a suburb of Seattle. She has made posies and arrangements since she was five, drawing from roots that began on a family farm in New Jersey where her mother grew lilacs, peonies, and roses. Lori worked for a flower shop in the Bay Area after college and later, during a technology career, she continued to design flowers for family and friends' weddings. In 2017, she formalized a business, naming the studio "Flori" ...and rhymes with her name. Lori said, "My husband designed my first business card and it read: "Garden-style Bowers for small weddings and events." The frustration of producing wedding flowers in a garage filled with sports equipment and bicycles inspired dreams of having a dedicated design space. Lori's solution? A 12-by-24-foot covered storage area at one end of the horse barn where three animals also are stabled. The space now has two sets of white French dooms and windows, which look charming against the blue-gray shingle siding, complete with striped awning, I can only imagine how fun it was for Debra to roam the country scouting these 37 flower-filled locations for her book. All the stories and the people behind these magical spaces are a true joy to discover. If you are thinking about creating or redoing a floral space of your own - a simple she shed or a little corner in the garage or attic, well, then you'll find plenty of inspiration in the spaces profiled in Debra's book. This book is 127 pages of pure eye candy and dreams made real for modern floral artists and creatives. You can get a copy of Where We Bloom by Debra Prinzing and support the show using the Amazon link in today's show notes for around $9. Botanic Spark 1962 Death of Vita Sackville-West (books by this author) English author, and garden designer. In 1960, Vita wrote of her marriage and death: ..now in our advancing age, we love each other more deeply than ever, and also more agonizingly, since we see the inevitable end. It is not nice to know that one of us must die before the other. Vita died first. Three weeks later, Harold wrote, Oh Vita, I have wept buckets for you. Vita Sackville-West was a talented and complex woman. An excellent writer, Vita found success as a poet, writer, and broadcaster. After she and Harold purchased Sissinghurst, Vita became one of the most influential gardeners of her time. For over twenty years, they worked together to create a garden where none ever grew before. And for over a decade, she wrote a weekly column about her life as a gardener at Sissinghurst for the Observer. Vita was at once relatable, admirable, witty, and removed. Vita knew love and loss in her personal life and had relationships with both women and men, but through it, all Harold remained the true north of her heart. Today the fruit of their labor and their shared dream, Sissinghurst, is beloved worldwide, and Vita's garden wisdom still holds sway. In her book called The Garden, Vita wrote, I tried to hold the courage of my ways In that which might endure, Daring to find a world in a lost world, A little world, a little perfect world… And in her Poems of West & East, Vita wrote a loving tribute to their efforts at Sissinghurst in a poem called The Garden. We owned a garden on a hill, We planted rose and daffodil, Flowers that English poets sing, And hoped for glory in the Spring. We planted yellow hollyhocks, And humble sweetly-smelling stocks, And columbine for carnival, And dreamt of Summer's festival. And Autumn not to be outdone As heiress of the summer sun, Should doubly wreathe her tawny head With poppies and with creepers red. We waited then for all to grow, We planted wallflowers in a row. And lavender and borage blue, - Alas! we waited, I and you, But love was all that ever grew. Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener And remember: For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.

Today our exploration of the Mandaean Gnostic Scriptures consists of three readings from the Great Treasure, also known as the Ginza Rabba, the primary holy book of Eastern Gnosticism. We begin with the story of a soul that finds itself dwelling in a rather anxiety-inducing dark realm and seeks to be liberated from this place before it gets absorbed into that darkness and the soul loses it's Luminescence or Radiance like the other souls that reside here. Then a Light appears in the darkness and communicates a peaceful Divine Message from Above to the soul about it's life-to-come in the world and it's eventual ascension back to it's True Home, the Place of the Light and Life. Our soul is instructed to: "Endure in the world and dwell therein until We are longing for you. When We are longing for you We will reach out and come here to you. We will reach out and come here to you, and We will bring you out and raise you to your Treasure-House (Heavenly Realm)." In the next reading, "The Soul Within Me Yearns For Hayyi (Great Life, Great Spirit, Supreme Being)", we marvel at an all-too-familiar Gnostic cosmology of Heavenly Regions. There is the Earth-realm or material plane followed by Seven Inner Levels or Heavens, and the Plane of Truth that is beyond. The true yearning soul must not be fooled into assuming any of those illusory middle regions to be the Highest of Heavens and True Destination, and thus deceived, detained and prevented from ascending all the way up to The Eighth, the Goal, Ultimate Reality, the Real Home of The Great Life, Hayyi Rabbi, a Mandaic Aramaic sacred name for the True God. The Path of the Masters (Living Gnosis Now, Sant Mat) also has a cosmology of eight Inner Regions with The Eighth, Anami Radhasoami ("Ra-dha-swam-i"), representing the Ultimate Reality where the Beloved Lord of Love resides. This Gnostic Satsang or spiritual gathering online (Spiritual Awakening Radio podcast) concludes with some thoughts about "Sant Mat and Cousin Schools of Mysticism of the Ages": Neoplatonism, Pythagoreanism, Jewish Mysticism or Kabbalah, Hermetic Philosophy, Christian Mysticism, Gnosticism, Sufism, and how Sufism, perhaps with some influence of Manichaeanism, likely served as the major West-East conduit for this otherworldly approach to spirituality to reach India. "From the day when I came to love the Life [God], from the day when my heart came to love the Truth, I no longer have trust in anything in the world… After my soul alone I go searching about, which to me is worth generations and worlds. I went and found my soul -- What are to me all the worlds? I went and found Truth, as she stands at the outer rim of the worlds." Jeff Bezos has said, “Your brand is what other people say about you when you're not in the room.” A strong brand is formed and is sustainable only when it connects to people on emotional and rational levels. It needs to offer something unique to customers and not just focus on the product on a superficial level. A brand manager's role is extremely critical to build and maintain the reputation. Today, we have Mr. Soumya Solanki, the Managing Director of Kantar Insights of West, East, Central Africa, who discusses it at great length with us. Soumya discusses the importance of having a clear brand purpose. He talks further about a brand providing a meaningful benefit to the consumer. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tbcy/support

Welcome to the Olivet Discourse. The End Times prophetic address that Jesus gave to His disciples high atop the Mount of Olives, immediately to the East of the Holy City, Jerusalem. As you will hear in this PODCAST, that lovely little land that we affectionately call Israel is the center of the world. Literally and metaphorically. Literally, because Israel is the place where the three major continents -- Europe, Asia, and Africa -- tenderly touch and affectionately kiss each other. Which goes a long way to explaining why God chose this modest piece of real estate -- a mere 150 miles long (North-South), 50 miles wide (West-East) -- as stage for the Greatest Story Ever Told. Metaphorically the center of the world because throughout all of human history, the eyes of world have ever been focused squarely on the Middle East -- so called because it sits in the middle or center of the world. And in center of the Middle East sits Israel. So Israel is indeed the center of the world. That said, Jerusalem is the center of Israel, and the Temple is the center of Jerusalem. So it is no wonder that Jesus and His disciples took a timeout from all of the hubbub of activities on this Tuesday of Jesus’ final week, exactly three days before Jesus would go to the cross. As they sat upon the Mount of Olives taking in that breathtaking view of the Holy City and its glorious Temple -- God’s House, what Jesus called “My Father’s House,” what many of our Jewish friends call “The House” -- the disciples were moved by that spectacular panoramic portrait to ask Jesus these two most important questions in Matthew 24: “What will be the sign of your coming,” and “What will be the sign of the end of the age?” Jesus’ answer to those questions comprise what we now call the Olivet Discourse, spanning two full chapters, Matthew 24 - 25. As you are about to hear, there are Two Interpretive Keys to understanding these all-important prophetic chapters. Please remember that depending upon your web browser and connection speed, it may take up to 60 seconds for this podcast to begin to play. God bless you richly as you listen.

The opening lecture “Romania: From the Crossroads of Empires to the Globalized World” is a general introduction to the Romanian “Other”, based on a critique of its construction within the framework of the West-East dichotomy. Romania is presented as a country on and of the border, a contact zone, whose unique features have been generated by its location at the crossroads of empires – Roman, Byzantine, Ottoman, Habsburg, Russian and Soviet - between West and East, the Latin and the Slavic worlds, the Catholic-Protestant and the Orthodox Churches and between South-Eastern and Central-European countries. The last part of the lecture addresses the impact Romania’s newly acquired memberships in NATO and the EU has had on the general American perception of Romania and relates the significance of the KSU Year of Romania Program to the current celebration of 130 years of United States-Romanian diplomatic relations and of 50 years of Fulbright educational exchanges in Romania.
