If your family's viewing habits changed a bit during the pandemic, you're not alone! One enormous trend was the rise of Korean dramas on U.S. streaming services. But entertainment journalist Regina Kim says this has actually been happening for years, even decades. She wrote a fantastic piece for Elle Magazine called “The K-Drama Renaissance: How South Korean entertainment took over your TV.” The South Korean entertainment industry has been enormously disruptive to the media landscape, with pop groups (BTS), hit TV shows ("Squid Game"), and blockbuster movies ("Parasite") that dwarf the global popularity of their U.S. counterparts. So, what's their secret? Regina says it a has a lot to do with innovation, iteration, and a generational history of cross-cultural investment that is now paying off in a global way.

Drawing comparisons to some of music's greatest singer, songwriter, producers like Babyface, Michael Jackson and El Debarge, Devon Howard has constructed a style and feel very reminiscent of his childhood inspirations yet uniquely all his own. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Devon's greatest influence was his father, Melvin Leonard Brown, who was a songwriter for a few local groups of his era including The Bleu Lights, who enjoyed a hit release written by Brown. After graduating from The Baltimore School for the Arts, Devon joined the group Me 2 U who scored a record deal with RCA Records allowing him to write two songs on the album. The self-titled debut album contained production from Vincent Herbert (Lady Gaga, Tamar Braxton) and Ron Fair (Christina Aguilera, Keyshia Cole). The project released two singles ‘Want U Back' and ‘All Night' both charting on the R&B Billboard charts respectively. After Me 2 U disbanded, Howard and two other members of the group formed Diverisiti, signing to Global/EMI Records. This venture gave Devon the opportunity to write and produce twelve songs on the CD. The group toured the United States promoting their music and eventually went on to do solo projects. In 2005, Howard signed with an indie label in Europe and released his first solo project entitled ‘Urban Eclecticism.' The success of that project lead to a record deal in Japan and garnered more fanfare abroad for Devon. In 2007, the release of Howard's hit single ‘Other Side of the Bed' through Global Entertainment marked his first release in the United States. The video for the single was directed by Chris Robinson (Beyonce', Usher, Bruno Mars) and played on video outlets worldwide, including VH1 Soul and BET. Global released a second single ‘Yesterday' in 2008, a duet with Baltimore's own Paula Campbell which fared well at Urban AC radio. In the subsequent years, Devon performed around the country opening for major and independent artists, including Joe, Mario, KeKe Wyatt and Dionne Warwick. Taking time to produce projects and delve into other facets of the entertainment industry, Howard has created a suite of songs that feels reminiscent of old school classic love songs yet still retaining relevance in today's market. The album entitled ‘Return To Love' and its 'singles ‘Back To Paradise' and ‘Could This Be Love' have already gained attention across the globe and is set to make its debut in the United States at Urban AC radio. Return To Love is currently available on most digital outlets. Devon is not just the nice guy with the smooth sexy voice, he is the winner of the Heineken/ASCAP Initiative for Songwriting. Amidst his hectic schedule he also finds time to give back. He's been an advocate for foster kids and homeless teens in his hometown Baltimore the past fifteen years. Devon also put together a compilation CD of local Artists where 100% of the proceeds went to supporting a day shelter for homeless youth and young adults. Devon Howard has also performed at countless charitable events and have donated to various organizations including The Red Cross and America's Harvest. His latest single "Forever and Always reached #8 on the Indie Soul chart in the UK and is doing just as well here in the US. Look out for my conversation with this incredibly gifted artist and humanitarian. Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. It’s been that long since America’s most trusted newscaster said, “And that’s the way it is,” while all of America nodded yes.At a time when we seem to be living in two separate realities, despite the polarization, more than two thirds of us long for a trustworthy, independent, credible authority to help us address those three key questions – what’s so, so what and now what?Meanwhile, the COVID crisis is being used to accelerate the “global reset” agenda of the World Economic Forum and those who want to impose a top down global authority to rule the world. Well, as the Swami says, “If we don’t want dystopia, we need to offer an alternative – dat-topia.” Our guest this week, Steven Jay, is dedicating his life work to creating a new media platform where creative ideas can come out to play, and where we can together reset the HUMAN HEART as we shift from domination to collaboration, and where we can step out of the matrix and into the creatrix.Steven describes Mobilized as a “new kind of media for a newer, kinder world inspired by nature, powered by people, and empowered by imagination.” He writes, “Mobilized is a hands-on learning network for imagination and human potential. About 57 percent of the world's game developers live in the United States, and the large majority of them are on the West Coast. This small country of only 5 million people is now home to some of the biggest game companies in the world. Unsurprisingly, the global gaming industry has been the impetus for much in the way of international cooperation between studios, publishers, and investors. In the MeToo era, so many creative people are being outed as bullies, sexual predators, and worse. And for journalists who cover arts and entertainment, it’s been a bit of a tightrope: How can you write about House of Cards or The Cosby Show ever again without the work feeling hopelessly tainted? And are they still great shows, even if their stars or creators aren't?            How do you investigate claims of harassment if no one will talk, and a star's publicist won't let you near their client? What excellent works of art or storytelling were never made because bad men got in the way? A few weeks ago Kurt Andersen participated in a panel to talk about some of these questions with other journalists and critics. The panel was called “When Bad People Create Good Art: Writing About Culture in the #MeToo Era.” It was held at the Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York. The panel was moderated by Janice C. Terri talks to Ben Costantini about how Startup Sesame events are designed to help founders identify the best events to build their businesses and ultimately strengthen the European startup/investing ecosystem through community, knowledge sharing and connections.      Who is Ben Costantini? Ben Costantini runs Startup Sesame, the largest alliance of Tech events in Europe and Connectors, an innovation studio specialized in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. Ben is also the curator of Symposium Stockholm, the festival of ideas founded by Daniel Ek and Ash Pournouri. Ben has more than ten years of experience in conference organization, and has one of the most extensive and trusted networks of event founders in the world. He is an expert in the creative industries and advises entrepreneurs and investors in early and growth stages.  He was a Global Entertainment and Music Business instructor at the Valencia Campus of Berklee College of Music and the co-founder of the school’s student-run label, Disrupción Records.   Show Highlights Ben talks about Startup Sesame; there are 30 partner events and right now they are accepting applications for the 2018 cohort of startups with applications due by 3/1 to participate in the one-year program. Startup Sesame curate events to help startup founders identify the best events to attend to help build their businesses and to strengthen the European startup/investing ecosystem. Terri’s favorite startup event is Slush in Helsinki because of the content and the events that encourage connecting. What is Startup Sesame’s criteria for adding new event partners?    Is it a startup event?   Does it provide a strong startup offering?   Is it happening at the same time as an existing partner event? Is it happening in the same city where there is an existing partner event?   Ben sees positive activity in startups, investing, and regulations in Europe to make innovation easier. There are now entrepreneurial and technical classes in school for kids.   Innovation doesn’t only happen in Silicon Valley. One of the challenges in Europe is around funding.  There’s early stage money and later stage money but there’s a gap in the middle.    Another challenge is around regulation and politics.  The European startup cities are competing rather than focusing on a pan-European market or a digital single market.    Terri asked about whether GDPR is going to be helpful for European startups or a barrier to entry.  Per Ben, bigger companies are going to have an advantage because they can hire more people to comply with GDPR.  This will be harder for smaller companies and will have a negative impact on innovation.  This will provide opportunities for innovation in helping companies comply with GDPR.  There’s a great opportunity in copywriting in Europe for innovation.    Terri talks about hoping to see a right-sizing of the need to meet the GDPR regulations.   Anyone who wants to meet up with Startup Sesame or Ben at 4YFN in Barcelona, they will be there Feb 26th through March 1st 2018.    Startup Sesame will be reviewing applications and narrowing down to 30 candidates to identify the final startups for the 2018 program. The winners will be attending a retreat in Valencia, Spain at the end of March to meet each other and the Startup Sesame community.    Valencia, Spain has a robust startup scene with over 100 startups, there are 30 investment funds and 40 co-working spaces.    If Ben could wave a magic wand, he would make information and knowledge available to everyone, everywhere because a lot of struggles and wars occur because information is not readily available.      Terri’s Key Takeaway Innovation happens at the fringe; not at the center   References in the Podcast Startup Sesame: https://www.startupsesame.com/ GDPR:  https://www.eugdpr.org/ 4YFN: https://www.4yfn.com/ Slush: http://www.slush.org/ Mobile World Congress: https://www.mobileworldcongress.com/ Station F: https://stationf.co/ theCamp:  https://thecamp.fr/   Contact Ben can be reached at ben@startupsesame.com. 2017.09.11 The global circulation of Donald Trump’s political rhetoric during the presidential campaign of 2015-16 produced international dismay, bewilderment, and apprehension, particularly in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). It also effected a rupture of the crucial divide between American popular culture and US politics—a distinction that allowed American cultural products, massively popular in the Middle East and elsewhere, to proliferate in places where U.S. politics were unpopular or rejected. During the Bush II and Obama administrations, a new generation in the MENA region differentiated between the cultural products and political system of the U.S. and creatively recoded, incorporated, and localized a global American culture. The breach of the divide between American popular and political culture, or its blurring, portends the winter of the American empire and the postscript to the “American century,” an influential formation which held that the popularity and attractiveness of American culture had positive political benefits for the United States. In the age of Trump and Twitter, the American political system itself has become a horrible form of global entertainment. How devastating the effects will be remains to be seen. Brian T. Edwards Crown Professor in Middle East Studies and Professor of English, Comparative Literary Studies and American Studies, Northwestern University
