Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” 1 Kings 18:36-37 Praying with Purpose If you are like me, there is a good chance that at some time in your life, you prayed for millions of dollars. Especially when I was a child, I had a long list of things that I would do with those million dollars. Of course, I would give some of it to church, but the main point of asking was to get something for myself. Maybe things change when you grow up a little. Perhaps you no longer say as many self-centered prayers. Yet, because we are sinful human beings, our prayers can still be tainted with improper motivation: selfishness, greed, and pride. When Elijah prayed, he prayed with a purpose that displayed Godly motivation. When he confronted the prophets of Baal on Mt. Carmel, he wasn’t there to bring glory to himself. He didn’t pray ‘Lord, if this doesn’t work, I’m really going to look stupid!’ Elijah had but one reason for asking God to consume the altar he had built with fire: “…so these people will know that you, “LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” When we pray for ministries, job opportunities, and any blessing from God, we may be tempted to pray with all kinds of selfish motives. But remember that what matters in this world is not so much WHAT we accomplish, but FOR WHOM we accomplish it. Like Elijah, we too can pray with this one purpose in mind: that people may know that the Lord is God. Then, however God chooses to answer our prayers, we will continue to be his witnesses to the ends of the earth. In this message we will look at what the Scriptures have to say about marriage, analyze concerns and questions raised in our day, overview the cultural changes that have led to many questioning the value and benefit of marriage, and do so from a Christian worldview. We will also take a look at some secular contemporary research and what it indicates. Common Reactions:     1.    The culture has changed:     - Married Couples comprised:             1950 — 78% of all US households             2020 — 47% of all US households     - Living together before marriage:             1960's — 5%             2020's — 70%     - Recent analysis of the General Social Survey data tells us Americans' happiness declined from the 1970s to the 2020s. Sam Peltzman, Professor emeritus, University of Chicago says one thing explains the most recent decline in overall happiness - the decline of marriage.  The data indicates the benefit of what the Bible has said all along. Genesis 2:18 "The Lord God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him." The literal Hebrew translation for the word helper is:  "Helper equal to Him." This is talking about two people who are complimentary to each other. Our Creator recognized we function better together.     2.    Divorce makes me fear marriage:     - the spike in divorce rate have left an impression on the generation raised in one parent households.     3.    Why not just live together?     - the Bible tells us to be faithful before and after marriage to our spouse.     - Couples who live together:         4-5 times more likely to break up than married couples         more likely to divorce once they do marry (by about 50%)         higher incidence of alcohol abuse, drug abuse and domestic violence     4.    How can I know the right one? "Fall in like before you fall in love." This means - find an individual who is like minded, who shares your faith, your values, your outlook on life, an individual who truly is a potential soulmate. Make sure that the person you choose as your life partner and spouse is one who holds like values and believes as you do.     5.    I'm not sure marriage is for me: One does not need to feel pushed into marriage. In 1 Corinthians 7:7 Paul refers to the gift of celibacy saying, "I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that." God does not say everyone is to be married.  Contemporary Research: 2 books     ⁃    "The Two-Parent Privilege" by Melissa S. Kearney Professor of Economics, University of Maryland 2023 - tells us that "Americans stopped getting married and started falling behind." Her work has been printed in:     Wall Street Journal     New York Times     National Review      Atlantic Magazine She offers a "provocative, data-driven case for marriage by showing how the institution's decline has led to a host of economic woes…"  She shows how children do better in a family where their parents are married to each other.     ⁃    Education outcomes     ⁃    Physical and mental health     ⁃    Diminishes suicide possibility     ⁃    Serves as a barrier to alcohol and drug use and child abuse     ⁃    Impacts Teenage pregnancy and delinquency She comes at this on the basis of solid economic data and what we can see happening in our culture today.     ⁃    "Get Married" by Brad Wilcox Professor Sociology, University of Virginia 2024. Also published in the following:     ⁃    Wall Street Journal     ⁃    New York Times     ⁃    National Review     ⁃    Atlantic Magazine Wilcox tells us, "When it comes to predicting overall happiness, a good marriage is far more important than how much education you get, how much money you make, how often you have sex and even how satisfied you are with your work."    Pastor concludes with these thoughts: God created us, He speaks because He knows us and wants what is best for us. God invented marriage and He gives us guidance on how to have a truly blessed and God-pleasing marriage. Malachi 2:15 says, "Has not the one God made you? You belong to him in body and spirit. And what does the one God seek? Godly offspring. Romans 10:9-10 — In this sermon on Romans 10:9–10 titled “Saving Faith,” Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones gives a roadmap through the Christian life as they experience God. Parenting is not merely about surviving each day—it's about preparing our children for all the relationships they will encounter throughout their lives. In episode three of "Raising Godly Warriors," Duane Sheriff outlines three fundamental principles known as the three R's: Rules, Restraints, and Relationships. The first R, Rules, reminds us that authority structures exist everywhere in life, from school to work to marriage, and children must learn to respect authority to prosper. The second R, Restraints, teaches us about boundaries and consequences—the biblical principle of sowing and reaping found in Galatians 6. Our children must learn that actions have consequences, that delayed gratification builds character, and that love itself constrains us from harming others. The third R, Relationships, reminds us that rules and restraints without relationship leads to rebellion. Everything parents do should be rooted in connection, spending time together, and maintaining open hearts even during correction. When we understand that all of parenting is ultimately about preparing our children for a relationship with God and healthy relationships with others, everything changes.

In episode two of "Raising Godly Warriors," Duane Sheriff teaches a biblical approach to parenting through the metaphor of an arrow in Psalm 127. There are three stages of a child's development: the feathers (ages 0-10), where we train through repetition and protection, the shaft (ages 10-20), where we teach, shape character, and strengthen identity; and the tip (age 20 and beyond), where we launch them toward their God-given target.Scripture teaches that the biblical age of accountability begins at 20, not 18. In Numbers 14, God held those 20 years old and older accountable for Israel's rebellion, while those younger were still considered under parental covering. This is more than historical detail—it's a spiritual warfare blueprint. Releasing our children prematurely can expose them to battles they are not yet equipped to fight, emphasizing the parental responsibility to protect, train, and prepare them until they can stand as warriors in their own right.

Talent can impress people, but character shapes environments. This devotional comes from the perspective of a longtime worship leader who has seen firsthand how a person’s humility, integrity, and teachability can either strengthen a team—or quietly unravel it. Skill may draw attention, but when pride, dishonesty, or unrepentant sin is present beneath the surface, it eventually spills out into relationships, unity, and even the spiritual atmosphere of a church community. The reminder is clear: talent is never a substitute for godly character. And this isn’t just a message for worship teams. It applies to every part of life where we influence others—at work, at home, in friendships, and in everyday choices that seem small but matter deeply. How we handle integrity in the “little things” (like being on time, returning a shopping cart, resisting gossip, or refusing “white lies”) reveals what’s happening in the heart. These moments don’t just reflect on us; they reflect on the One we represent. The devotional ties this to the biblical call to be ambassadors for Christ. An ambassador doesn’t represent themselves—they represent their kingdom. In the same way, believers carry the privilege and responsibility of representing God’s character wherever we go. That means our words, attitudes, actions, and even our work ethic become part of our witness. Colossians 3:23 offers a practical lens for daily living: do everything with wholehearted effort as if you’re doing it for the Lord. When we live that way, our character becomes a quiet invitation—drawing others toward Jesus through consistency, kindness, humility, and truth. Today is an opportunity to pause and ask: Does my life represent God well? And when God highlights areas for growth, we can respond with repentance and dependence on His grace—trusting Him to shape us into people whose lives point others toward Christ.
