In this episode of The Care Ministry Podcast, Laura Howe sits down with Reverend Dr. Chris Adams to explore the distinctions and overlaps between coaching, pastoral care, and clinical support. As a third-generation pastor, clinical psychologist, and experienced coach, Chris shares valuable insights on how churches can integrate these three approaches to create a holistic support system. Whether you're a ministry leader, a volunteer, or simply passionate about caring for others, this episode will equip you with practical tools and perspectives to enhance your caregiving efforts within your church and community. Quotes Chris Adams: “Pastors often carry the weight of caregiving, but when we integrate coaching, pastoral care, and clinical support, we create a web of care that allows people to truly thrive.” Laura Howe: “For many, these three roles exist in separate silos, but today we're talking about how they can actually complement one another to provide holistic care.” Chris Adams: “I found myself coaching ministry leaders before I even knew it was a thing. Now, coaching psychology is a recognized field, reinforcing the idea that leadership development is key to sustainable ministry.” Laura Howe: “This might be an eye-opening conversation for some and a confirmation for others that the church has the opportunity to provide layered and effective care.” Chris Adams: “Care ministry is not about doing it all alone; it's about recognizing our strengths and building a support system that empowers both caregivers and those they serve.” Resources Church Mental Health Summit Workshop registration - Flourishing in Ministry: The Power of Coaching for Church Leaders Flourishing in Ministry Connect with Hope Made Strong Website: HopeMadeStrong.org Socials: Facebook – Instagram – Twitter – YouTube

"I think our industry is craving some disruption - and it needs it." - Jack Crotty What does it actually mean to disrupt the health insurance industry? Jack Crotty, the Director of Business Development of Adyptation, joined me in studio this week for a discussion on the innovative solutions he's bringing to the consulting world, including pharmaceutical sourcing and specialized disease care that brings incredible care to employees and day one savings to the employers who pay for it. As Jack says in the episode, Adyptation's primary goal is to act as a “Robin Hood” figure in the industry, taking the power from the large corporations and giving it back to the people the industry is meant to serve, and anyone who listens to the show knows that's a mission I can get behind. Jack and I also had a fascinating discussion on what the role of wearables should be in tracking patient progress. Many of our differences are basically misunderstandings, and the reason for those misunderstandings is that we don't listen to each other or attempt to understand another's perspective. How can we learn to see what is true in a world of misinformation and miscommunication? Christian Madsbjerg (@Christian Madsbjerg) shares his expertise on the importance of suspending conditioned beliefs in our minds and genuinely looking at the power of understanding multiple perspectives. “You can't see anything about other humans unless you use your own humanity and your own experience. ” - Christian Madsbjerg Key Takeaways: Phenomenology: Wikipedia defines this as a “ philosophical study of objectivity – and reality more generally – as subjectively lived and experienced. It seeks to investigate the universal features of consciousness while avoiding assumptions about the external world, aiming to describe phenomena as they appear to the subject, and to explore the meaning and significance of the lived experiences.” Just Look: Observe without telling the story, release bias, and let go of having to define. Just look, have no opinion or preconceived notions, and observe what's happening. Letting go of any idea of what something is or is not, try to see what is there; seeing what's there may be the most challenging thing. Can you perceive from another person's perspective? 3 Types of Attention: 1) The attention you have when you just walk down the street. When you're not focusing on anything, you're just in it/life. You know exactly what cars are, the sounds around you, and so on, and you know how to operate in it; you're not focused on anything in particular. 2) Attention that is laser-focused when you zoom in on something. 3) Hyper-reflective attention, where you see yourself see, and therefore, you can also see how others see instead of having opinions about them. I'm sure you've heard the saying “it takes a village” applied to all kinds of situations, whether it's raising a child, packing up and moving, or even starting your business. Truth be told, it DOES take a village to grow your wellness practice. Being able to draw on the brilliance of other practitioners has been a saving grace for me throughout my journey as a functional medicine practitioner. Honestly, I feel much more confident knowing I have access to experienced practitioners who can provide insight and suggestions when I get stuck. But it didn't start out that way. I didn't have a community of practitioners to lean on for support. I just had to figure out how to help the people who walked in my door it out by myself. And it was no fun. Early in my practice, I had my own “aha” moment when I finally figured out how other practitioners were getting their successes even faster. And guess what? They don't do it alone. The power of a clinical community is soooooo underrated but it is a total game changer when we can tap into the resources of others. So instead of being the Nancy Drew in your wellness community, I encourage you to find a community you can draw from and so give back to. Growth is a two-way street my friend, and the more you give, the richer the information and deeper conversations become! Gold Nuggets (4:58) My own clinical community origin story. (11:47) Real talk – why you can't (and shouldn't) know everything. (13:00) Why it's impossible to keep up with all the new research yourself. (14:18) How to work with other practitioners to solve a problem and have more fun in the process. (15:13) My recommendations for how to maximize your experience inside a clinical community. On International Nurses Day, please listen to Jo Stewart, the Clinical Nurse Unit Manager at the ICU in which I work - Frankston Hospital. On May 12th, the date that commemorates the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, we celebrate every single one of the many nurses who support and care for us when we are sick. Pretty much everyone on earth comes in contact with a nurse and, for us in intensive care, nurses are so important to all that we do. Let me simply say thank you to the nurses of the world. You are the lifeblood of healthcare, and especially in hospitals. I have learnt from watching hundreds of you; about how to better care for a patient, about how to better communicate, and how to better support a critically unwell person and their loved ones. If you read the cards that are sent to the ICUs when the patients and their families want to say thank you, you’ll see who they value the most. Our nurses are simply amazing. On this episode I speak with Jo Stewart. Her role as Clinical Nurse Unit Manager allows her to offer training and support to the nurses of Frankston ICU as well as to work on quality and operational requirements of the unit. Jo is passionate about education and supporting novice nurses and brings experience from a variety of specialty ICU nursing areas such as Cardiothoracics (including ECMO), Neurosurgery, and Critical Care Liaison Nursing. Jo completed her Masters in Intensive Care Nursing at The Alfred Hospital in 2007, worked in Vancouver, and then commenced working at Frankston Hospital as a Clinical Support and Development Nurse in ICU in 2011 whilst concurrently lecturing at Monash University for both Undergraduate and Post Graduate Nursing courses. In the episode Jo speaks about: How she got into ICU nursing and what she enjoys about it Attracting and retaining ICU nurses The various roles she has worked in throughout her career Educating nurses How Jo educates herself Leading as a nurse unit manager Creating the right culture as a leader How she allocates her own time to different tasks Interactions between doctors and nurses in the ICU Principles of good communication Her self-care practices Encouraging wellness for the nursing workforce Working better as a team Some tips for the ICU doctors Jo is extraordinarily passionate and enthusiastic about her role. She is very welcoming, always happy for a chat, and I thought she would make an excellent guest for the show. Please enjoy listening to Jo Stewart.
