What role do estrogen and the menstrual cycle play in the moods of women? Is ‘baby brain' a real phenomena or does the brain actually sharpen during motherhood? Today we have the important topic of women's hormones to up our awareness about. A big part of the experience we have of our bodies is thanks to hormones, also called  neurotransmitters because they help our nervous system communicate with the rest of the body about what's going on inside and outside the body. Having accompanied my partner through the process of having two children, and us both having had many unanswered questions about that; and now heading into my late forties having many female friends and listeners heading towards menopause, and speaking publicly about how they wished there'd been given more information about it as it seems not to be discussed much, even amongst women. So I felt the need to make a show about the science and experience of female hormones, particularly with regard to motherhood and menopause; in the hope that women facing these experiences and men hoping to be informed and supportive to those experiences might get more insight. If you're looking for a show about the comparison or difference between men and women, or Mars or Venus, or the battle of the sexes this is not the show for you: this is simply an informative show about the female brain and particularly about the changes that take place during motherhood and menopause. Unfortunately there is hardly any research into the neuroscience and hormones of trans people, so I apologise in advance for the fact that this show speaks only of those who are born and identify themselves as women.  We are extremely fortunate that our guest today is a neuroscientist and author who has specialised in the Female Brain, both studying the full arc of a woman's life  in her highly accessible yet detailed book “The Women's Brain Book: The neuroscience of Health, Hormones and Happiness”; and most recently in her new 2023 book “Baby Brain: The surprising science of how pregnancy and motherhood sculpt our brains and change our minds (for the better)”. THE MENOPAUSE  In terms of life events, it’s one of the things that a woman fears the most – I’m talking about the menopause. An event that changes a woman in many ways; physically, mentally, emotionally, physiologically… It’s not something we can escape or hide from. It’s a naturally-occurring process. A fact of life. But it doesn’t have to mean your life is over – far from it. I want to talk about what it actually means, what is happening to you, how you can best support yourself through this experience, and – most important of all – it’s just another chapter in your life. Your life is not going to end in any way, shape or form. Yes, things will alter, you will witness your body and your mind behaving in ways that will be uncomfortable, emotional, painful even. The stress, fear, anxiety will kick in but there are lots of methods of keeping yourself well, healthy and active, and well prepared to face this beast head on.   You may end up seeing the world differently, but does that mean you have to wear a pair of negatively-tainted glasses for the remainder of your days? Never forget you are an inspirational woman who has lived through so much. You may have endured great hardship, loss, suffering, grief… But you may also have a life saturated with love, joy, gratitude, passion… Let’s remember to celebrate who we are, who we have become, and who we can still be.   In a nutshell, the menopause is when you stop having your monthly menstrual cycle and are therefore unable to become pregnant – your ovaries lose their function to reproduce. Typically, this can happen anytime around the ages of 44 – 55, this can vary though. Periods will become less frequent or in some instances can just stop.   There is something called the perimenopause, which is the lead-up to it and this will involve your body naturally adjusting to the menopause. Some women don’t realise they are in this stage, or that it exists at all, and automatically assume they have already hit the Big M. During this time you will start to produce less estrogen and you will notice this happening in your 40s, or maybe your 30s. This can happen over a number of years, and the best method of coping is to stay calm, equip yourself with knowledge, advice and information, and know what to look out for and how you can ease and alleviate nasty symptoms. You’ll have reached the menopause when you stop releasing eggs – it’s fair to say you’ve reached this after a full twelve months without your period. Here are some signs that you could be entering the perimenopause:   Weight gain Changes with your hair Heavier or lighter periods Worse bouts of PMS Headaches Breast tenderness Concentration difficulties Urinary tract infections Aches and pains   If I asked you to name me the number one symptom of the menopause, I’d bet a pretty packet on most of you mentioning hot flushes. There are countless signs and symptoms, some of which I’m going to list (aside from hot flushes because it’s safe to say we’ve covered that one):   Night sweats and trouble sleeping Mood changes Reduced muscle mass Lower sex drive Palpitations Vaginal dryness Memory and concentration issues   There are others but a key message here is that if you are still having your monthlies, you haven’t hit the menopause, this only happens once you haven’t had a period for twelve months consecutively.   Some of the above may occur with other health-related conditions so be mindful, listen to your body and go and see your GP. It’s vital to get that support network up and running as soon as you can and there’s no harm in going for a onceover is there?   You may feel you are able to cope with the symptoms but there are ways to help combat them if you’re finding it particularly tough and it is affecting your quality or life or even your ability to function properly day-to-day. You can get HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) prescribed, but this might not be advisable to certain women who have either had or are at a higher risk of breast cancer. Your GP might suggest other medications such as certain antidepressants or clonidine which treats high blood pressure.   To stave off the sweats or flushes it’s best to wear comfortable and light clothing, keep your bedroom cool and this may also help aid your sleeping. It’s a must to reduce any stressors which could be problematic if this is already sending your stress levels through the roof. Try and take in some regular exercise and lose weight if you’re able to, if you’re overweight.   There are plenty of supplements you can take to help you navigate this traumatic event, to keep your body and mind in tip-top shape and throw a lifeline when you think you’re stuck with all of this. Never feel like there’s no way out or that the light is shining bright at the end of what you perceive to be a darkened tunnel.   Vitamins C, E and 12 are essential I feel to helping you wrestle back the control and fight off the unpleasantness and the distress it might well be causing you. For example, you can get a Vitamin B12 shot which will boost you, revitalise you and give you energy. Getting some sun on your skin is a big yes-yes as this will produce Vitamin D which is useful for strong bones. Taking a natural supplement like 5-HTP can help with your sleeping problems and tackle your low or anxious mood.   You may find yourself scowling in the mirror because the dreaded Big M has wreaked havoc on your skin and you believe you now resemble a bag of something unsavoury. Taking collagen and hyaluronic acid can help improve your skin and bring back the radiance, this giving your confidence and self-esteem a much-needed bunk-up.   Please don’t think this is going to be forever, that this is your life now and this is the way it has to be. It isn’t. You are amazing, wonderful, inspirational and I will bet you loads of money that you motivate and encourage people all the time and you don’t even realise it. You are a force to be reckoned with. The symptoms of the menopause itself typically last for around four years after your last monthly cycle. It could be longer, but this is the average stated timeframe. The point is, you can ride this out. You have got this. Be proud of the woman you are. Do what you need to do to keep yourself well. Get your support system in place. Love you body and your mind and they will love you back. Do you remember when you were young and you had hopes, dreams, aspirations… Could you think of five things you wanted to do or to achieve? Could you do that same list now? Do it. Hitting the menopause is a monumental experience but it’s a new phase, chapter, beginning… whatever you want to call it. You can do and be whatever you want. You are still very much a worthy woman, valued, respected, loved and adored. If you looked back on all that you’ve accomplished, you’d literally astound yourself. It doesn’t have to end there. You can still achieve great things; you can travel, write a book or a screenplay, start a business, make some amazing life-long friends, celebrate life… Reinvent yourself because it really is your time, and you’ll get through it.   Is there any topic you would like me to cover? The most common herald of menopause is the appearance of hot flashes. These are virtually synonymous in the experience of many women. An adjunct to hot flashes are night sweats where you awaken drenched in sweat, so much so sometimes that you not only need to change your night clothes but the sheets on your bed as well. Both night sweats and hot flashes can be disconcerting if you are frightened of them. Don't be. A lot can be said about hot flashes, but there are only two facts that you need to know: First, they are completely harmless. Second, hot flashes are the only symptoms among a long list of stuff usually attributed to menopause that genuinely belong to it. Women of all ages get hot flashes especially strongly when their ovaries are removed surgically. During pre-menopause, thinner women often experience more drastic alterations in their estrogen levels and are therefore more likely than their bigger sisters to get stronger hot flashes. In most women, hot flashes are at their most intense during the last year or so before the end of menstruation and during the first year afterwards. Estrogen levels tend to be lower in pre-menopausal women with hot flashes than those without hot flashes. Yet it is quite clear that low estrogen, although it continues to get the blame for hot flashes, it is by no means all that is involved in their production. It is the sudden drop of estrogen in your body that is the real issue. And once your body becomes accustomed to lower levels of estrogen, most hot flashes gradually diminish. Often low estrogen is not involved in hot flashes at all. Hot flashes happen to women if they have been taking supplementary estrogen in HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) for a time and then stop. . There are certain foods and habits known to contribute greatly to the incidence of hot flashes. Stop cigarette smoking, drinking, caffeine, and eating hot spicy food. An overactive thyroid can cause hot flashes too, as can insulin resistance, the use of all sorts of potentially dangerous drugs from Big Pharma, and diabetes. Hot flashes are often the result of allergic reactions to foods and the chemicals in the environment. The high levels of steroid hormones used in pharmaceutical hormone replacement suppress important functions in your body, such as those that are connected with allergies and with your body's attempt to detoxify itself. When estrogen decreases rapidly in a menopausal woman who has been taking artificial hormones, then the underlying allergy or toxicity that was being masked by the hormones comes to the surface. Foods can give you reactions such as migraine, headaches and rises in blood pressure as well as hot flashes. It is time to look at your diet, since when offending foods like milk and all cows' milk products, including yoghurt and cheeses, wheat, chocolate, or oranges are removed from the diet, hot flashes will diminish and may even cease altogether. If you have been experiencing hot flashes, change your diet. Also use some powerful and benign herbs. Here are my favorites. They work beautifully: Sage: Make an infusion of 1 teaspoon of the dried leaves in a cup of water, allow it to steep for 10 minutes, then drink 1 tablespoon of the tea 1 to 4 times a day. Or you can use 10 to 25 drops of tincture of sage every day. Motherwort: It does not make a great tasting tea, so I prefer to take it as a tincture. Take 10 to 25 drops of tincture every 2 to 6 hours. Chastetree: Take 1 capsule of powdered berries 3 to 4 times a day, or 15 drops to 1 teaspoon of the tincture 1 to 3 times a day. Dong Quai: Make an infusion of a teaspoon of the dried root in a cup of boiling water and drink once a day. Or take 15 to 30 drops of tincture 1 to 3 times a day.

By the way, extra estrogen does not “cure” hot flashes. It only masks them for a while. Actually, there is nothing to “cure,” because hot flashes are not a symptom of disease. They are a normal bodily change associated with the transition between the menstrual years and menopause. The standard medical treatment for hot flashes is estrogen. If you decide to go on estrogen for a few years “to get you through the rough patch,” what you are not told is that when you come off it, your hot flashes are likely to return in force—three years down the road or twenty. Women who have been filled full of fear of menopause—particularly professional women—sometimes sit in trepidation lest a hot flash come over them while in a business meeting to betray that they are menopausal. Women always think they are more evident to the outside world than they are. But even if they were, so what? Why should any woman agree, even tacitly, to buy into the general nonsense that menopause—or perhaps a swollen belly during pregnancy—is something disgraceful to be hidden? The most common herald of menopause is the appearance of hot flashes. These are virtually synonymous in the experience of many women. An adjunct to hot flashes are night sweats where you awaken drenched in sweat, so much so sometimes that you not only need to change your night clothes but the sheets on your bed as well. Both night sweats and hot flashes can be disconcerting if you are frightened of them. Don’t be. A lot can be said about hot flashes, but there are only two facts that you need to know: First, they are completely harmless. Second, hot flashes are the only symptoms among a long list of stuff usually attributed to menopause that genuinely belong to it. Women of all ages get hot flashes especially strongly when their ovaries are removed surgically. During pre-menopause, thinner women often experience more drastic alterations in their estrogen levels and are therefore more likely than their bigger sisters to get stronger hot flashes. In most women, hot flashes are at their most intense during the last year or so before the end of menstruation and during the first year afterwards. Estrogen levels tend to be lower in pre-menopausal women with hot flashes than those without hot flashes. Yet it is quite clear that low estrogen, although it continues to get the blame for hot flashes, it is by no means all that is involved in their production. It is the sudden drop of estrogen in your body that is the real issue. And once your body becomes accustomed to lower levels of estrogen, most hot flashes gradually diminish. Often low estrogen is not involved in hot flashes at all. Hot flashes happen to women if they have been taking supplementary estrogen in HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) for a time and then stop. . There are certain foods and habits known to contribute greatly to the incidence of hot flashes. Stop cigarette smoking, drinking, caffeine, and eating hot spicy food. An overactive thyroid can cause hot flashes too, as can insulin resistance, the use of all sorts of potentially dangerous drugs from Big Pharma, and diabetes. Hot flashes are often the result of allergic reactions to foods and the chemicals in the environment. The high levels of steroid hormones used in pharmaceutical hormone replacement suppress important functions in your body, such as those that are connected with allergies and with your body's attempt to detoxify itself. When estrogen decreases rapidly in a menopausal woman who has been taking artificial hormones, then the underlying allergy or toxicity that was being masked by the hormones comes to the surface. Foods can give you reactions such as migraine, headaches and rises in blood pressure as well as hot flashes. It is time to look at your diet, since when offending foods like milk and all cows’ milk products, including yoghurt and cheeses, wheat, chocolate, or oranges are removed from the diet, hot flashes will diminish and may even cease altogether. By the way, extra estrogen does not “cure” hot flashes. It only masks them for a while. Actually, there is nothing to “cure,” because hot flashes are not a symptom of disease. They are a normal bodily change associated with the transition between the menstrual years and menopause. The standard medical treatment for hot flashes is estrogen. If you decide to go on estrogen for a few years “to get you through the rough patch,” what you are not told is that when you come off it, your hot flashes are likely to return in force—three years down the road or twenty. Women who have been filled full of fear of menopause—particularly professional women—sometimes sit in trepidation lest a hot flash come over them while in a business meeting to betray that they are menopausal. Women always think they are more evident to the outside world than they are. But even if they were, so what? Why should any woman agree, even tacitly, to buy into the general nonsense that menopause—or perhaps a swollen belly during pregnancy—is something disgraceful to be hidden? If you have been experiencing hot flashes, change your diet. Also use some powerful and benign herbs. Here are my favorites. They work beautifully: Sage: Make an infusion of 1 teaspoon of the dried leaves in a cup of water, allow it to steep for 10 minutes, then drink 1 tablespoon of the tea 1 to 4 times a day. Or you can use 10 to 25 drops of tincture of sage every day. Motherwort: It does not make a great tasting tea, so I prefer to take it as a tincture.
