In a time of fracture, in which people are searching for meaning and belonging, it is no wonder that men are re-exploring what manhood means. Yet the sense-making project around manhood has veered from the mythic journey it rightly could and should be into decidedly different territory. The last several years have seen the rise of the alt-right manosphere, whose narratives journey into outright misogyny, eugenics racism, and advocated violence. To weave these stories, the manosphere reaches for everything from fascist philosophers to Nordic animism to Bronze Age mythology, spinning tales of heroes who shone in individualist glory in order to reinforce a vision of the true man as one who dominates and triumphs and to reclaim an ancient vitality that they say is sapped by everything from immigration to feminism. But the vitalist manosphere ultimately misunderstands its own mythologies. Those Bronze Age stories, more often than not, are not celebrations of heroism but stern warnings about overstep, invitations into humility, and reminders of relationality. So the manosphere misses the mythic point, which is that, in tradition after tradition, there is an understanding that vital energy must be tempered, and rogue men who seek only domination must be brought back into the relational web. Cultures across the world have understood that warrior energy is a real thing, and that it needs initiation and initiatory systems to temper it and transform it from an adolescent vision of domination to a mature vision of kinship and service. To transform this vital energy — this predilection towards intensity — requires more than just discourse that dismisses it entirely. Rather, it requires recognizing the longing that lives at the heart of it, just as it requires a commitment to community, to accountability, to eldership, to initiation, and to accompaniment — every burning step of the way. Featuring interviews with authors Tyson Yunkaporta, Jamie Wheal, and mythopoetic guide Ian McKenzie, and original music from Travis Puntarelli, Rainer Baumorr, and Victor Sakshin, this episode takes us on a journey through the blazing depths of the sour-belly-power in its darkest and most glorious expressions. Set up the tech any way you like, I would probably do Google Slides transparent elements that link out to other places.The Battle Pass Grading Scheme:Change up the grading scheme. Instead of a traditional grading sheet, give students a "Battle Pass" tracker. Completing mandatory tasks earns them "XP" (points) to level up. Offer "Weekly Challenges" (optional bonus questions or creative projects) that unlock cosmetic rewards, like choosing the classroom music, getting a digital badge, or earning a "skip one homework assignment" voucher.Among Us: "Spot the Impostor" Source Analysis. This activity turns critical thinking, debate, and fact-checking into a high-stakes deduction game. How it Works: Divide students into small groups and hand them a packet of information—such as four short summaries of a historical event, four scientific claims, or four math equations worked out step-by-step. Among the real data, there is one Impostor (a text containing a historical fallacy, a grammatical error, misinformation, or a math mistake). Peters, and bowing in All Star Comics # 8 (cover dated January 1942), Princess Diana, the Amazing Amazon from Paradise Island, burst upon a world at war as--WONDER WOMAN! Armed with the powers of the Greek Gods, and the awesome capacity to win the day with love andcompassion, Wonder Woman was an instant hit with four color readers.By 1943, the Amazon Princess was appearing regularly in "Sensation Comics", "Wonder Woman", and "Comic Cavalcade".Wonder Woman was going toe to toe with the big boys on the block--Superman, Batman and Captain Marvel! And when almost all the heroes fell into obscurity bythe early 1950's, Wonder Woman kept pace with only two other survivors--The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight Detective. In the following decades, Wonder Woman's star would shine and dim. Its orbit caught in the vagaries of current tastes and trends.But there came a time when one legend was due to meet head on with another; a living legend of the comic book industry who had previously made his mark on such books as "The New Teen Titans", "The Fantastic Four", and "The Avengers". We come at this rewatch from two angles: some of us grew up with it on heavy DVD rotation, and some of us are seeing it for the first time and wondering why critics ever dismissed a movie with this much scale, sweat, and practical fire on screen. With Christopher Nolan's Odyssey on the horizon, we use Troy as a springboard to talk about the Iliad, Greek mythology, and why people are suddenly circling back to ancient epics again. We dig into what makes Troy feel different from early-2000s blockbusters: it plays things straight. That sincerity can read “too serious” if you're expecting quips, but it also lets the film breathe as a tragic war story. We talk through the craftsmanship that still pops: the grounded production design, the brutal battle staging, the Trojan Horse build that looks plausibly cobbled from shipwreck materials, and the fight choreography that makes the Achilles vs Hector duel genuinely thrilling. We also shout out the underrated details, from the costumes and armor to the hair and makeup choices that give the whole world a distinctive look.
