Has Gerry Beckley retired? Does he still sing with America? Who influenced the band America? All these questions answered this week. Gerry Beckley is a singer/songwriter best known as a founding member of the classic soft rock outfit America. Alongside bandmates Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek, Gerry first gained recognition for hits like 1971's "Horse with No Name," 1972's "Ventura Highway," 1975's "Sister Golden Hair," and others. Though he and Dewey have continued to perform as America until recenlty, Gery has also recorded under his own name since the mid '90s, releasing such mellow, well-crafted albums as 2022's Aurora and 2024's self -titled album Gerry Beckley. Gerry was born in Texas in 1952. He grew up as the son of an American air force officer and a British mother. Interested in music from a young age, he began playing piano at age three and later added guitar. By the time he was ten, Gerry was a promising musician playing in the surf rock band the Vanguards. He had also come under the influence of The Beatles and other British Invasion-era bands as a result of spending his summer vacations in England. In 1967, Gerry moved with his family to London after his father took over as commander at the United States Air Force base. It was while attending High School that he befriended classmates Dewey Bunnell and Dan Peek. The three quickly formed a band and began performing at a local all-ages club, playing covers by bands like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Neil Young and others. The trio eventually caught the attention of a local promoter and producer, who recorded them and helped them get a record deal. In 1971, they released the single, "A Horse with No Name." A hit the world over, the single propelled the band to early success. With America, Gerry Beckley enjoyed decades of popularity, releasing over 20 albums, touring globally, and penning numerous songs that helped to define both the soft rock and adult contemporary radio formats. Gerry Beckley began to release successful solo material in 1995 with Van Go Gan. The album featured Gerry backed by a bevy of longtime friends and collaborators, including Dewey Bunnell, trumpeter Mark Isham, the Eagles' Timonthy B. Schmit and others. That album was followed by a remix album. Away from America, Gerry next delivered 2000's LIke A Brother- a collaboration with Chicago singer/keyboardist Robert Lamm and the Beach Boys' Carl WIlson who died from lung cancer after completing the album in 1998. The record featured a mix of originals from each member of the band , as well as a cover of Harry Wilson's "Without You" In 2006, Beckley returned with his third solo album, Horizontal Fall. The compilation album Happy Hour was released in 2009. SInce then many solos albums have followed. Gerry has recently married and moved to Sydney Australia where he spends six months of the year. He has resigned from touring with America to concentrate on furthering his solo career. His latest self titled solo album is being touted as his best ever. Gerry plays the bulk of the instruments but gets help from a core group of players that includes former Chicago bassist Jason Scheff, guitarist Steve Fekete, drummers Brian Young and Ryland Steen along with backing vocalists Jeff Larson and Brian Eichenberger. Nick Lane and Matt Combs, also longtime musical fellow travelers, arranged horn and string parts, respectively. It's a collection of 12 original tunes featuring the singles "Red and Blue" and "Well Worn Shoes." Gerry Beckley joins us this week to walk us through his incredible career. Bill Champlin was born in Oakland, California on May 21, 1947 to a musical family. His grandparents, mother and sisters have all been singers. After forming the Sons of Champlin in 1967, he focused his songwriting talents on material for the Sons. “They were breathing fire. They were the most talented of all the San Francisco bands”, said Mickey Hart of the Grateful Dead. The Sons' first album, “Loosen Up Naturally,” was released in 1969 and followed by six more albums before the Sons disbanded in 1977. After the breakup of the Sons, Bill moved to Los Angeles and worked as a session vocalist on numerous recordings from 1977 to 1985. The artists he worked with included Patti LaBelle, Lou Rawls, Elton John, Boz Scaggs, Donna Summer, Nancy Wilson, George Benson, Jimmy Smith, Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and Kenny Rogers. In 1978 he released his first solo album, “Single.” In 1979 he won his first Grammy award for co-writing “After the Love is Gone,” which was later recorded by Earth, Wind & Fire. During the Chicago/EWF tours in 2004 and 2005, Champlin was asked to perform this song with them, as lead singer. In 1982 he joined Chicago to record “Chicago 16.” His unique and expressive voice can be heard on “Hard Habit to Break” from Chicago 17. Bill's 1988 recording of the song “In the Heat of the Night” was picked up as the show opener by the TV show of the same name. The following year Chicago released what turned out to be it's biggest-selling single and their last No. 1 hit, “Look Away,” once again with Bill on lead vocal. Four more solo albums followed from Bill's fertile mind: “Burn Down The Night” (1992), “Through It All” (1994), “He Started To Sing” (1995) and “Mayday” (1996). In July 1997 Chicago topped the adult contemporary chart with “Here in My Heart,” as the band once again turned to Bill for lead vocals. That same year also rendered the release of “West Coast All Stars,” an a cappella project he did with Jason Scheff of Chicago and Toto's Bobby Kimball and Joseph Williams. The Sons of Champlin reunited in 1997, with a loyal group of enthusiastic fans traveling great distances to see them perform. They recorded “Live At The Luther Burbank Center” in 1998, as well as “Secret” (CD and DVD) and “Hip Lil' Dreams” in 2002. Bill's solo release “No Place Left To Fall” (CD and DVD), recorded at The Barber Shop Studios in Hopatcong, NJ for the Dream Makers Music label. It was first released by JVC Japan in September 2008, as well as being released for digital downloading, and later released in Europe by Zync Music in December. The U.S. release by Dream Makers came in August 2009. On the heels of that US release and after 28 years with Chicago, Bill parted ways with the band to focus more on his solo career. “This music is callin' me,” he said.
Jim Peterik has the power to create a whole band for every musical impulse he ever has. Survivor is mostly in the rear view, but his original band The Ides of March still get together to perform for special occasions. He has a country band called The Stormchasers. He has a smooth jazz band called Lifeforce. He has a rock band called Pride of Lions. And he has World Stage, which is him collaborating with his musical friends like Jason Scheff, Don Barnes, Kevin Cronin and many more. Each of these continue to release new music with World Stage's Roots & Shoots Vol. 1 dropping most recently. Jim and I discuss these as well as his many collaborations over the years like Dennis DeYoung, the Beach Boys, Cheap Trick and more. He even breaks into song a couple times! Happy New Year, listeners! Despite our winter colds, we've returned with a scalding cup of political tea that you won't want to miss. We start by sifting through the unexpected twist of Chris Christie's political about-face, unraveling the threads of his departure from the race. Then, we set the stage for a heated viewership duel: a CNN debate with DeSantis and Nikki Haley on one side, and a Trump town hall on Fox on the other. Trust us, the implications are as juicy as the political banter. As we navigate through the stormy seas of politics, we pause to discuss Secretary Lloyd Austin's decorated career which now contrasts with his questionable health related decision. We're pulling back the curtain on the recent revelation of his prostate cancer diagnosis and the secrecy that shrouded it, probing the serious questions this raises about trust within our government's chain of command. Meanwhile, the Epstein flight logs have dropped like a bombshell, scattering high-profile names across the public's radar. We're here to dissect the fallout and give you our unfiltered thoughts. Our conversation doesn't end there. We're also casting a wary eye on government agencies and their tendency to enforce preferences over policies, a trend that could have lasting effects on our political landscape. And if you think we'd forget about our New Year's Eve escapades, think again. We've got tales to share from the glittering halls of Mar-a-Lago, where Elsa rubbed elbows with the likes of Jason Scheff and even dabbled in a little impromptu performance art. So, buckle up for a ride that promises to be as lively and engaging as the year ahead. Support the show

Jason Scheff Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Rock Star! Jason Scheff's got the chops, the voice, the lineage, the career, and the hair! And I'm not sure he could be a more lovely, gracious, humble guy. As if thirty years with Chicago weren't enough, Jason takes us through that experience from the rumors, the auditions, the close race, getting it, the faux pax, righting it big time, the glories of it, the joys, to why he left three decades later. We started with his dad, the iconic bassist, Jerry Scheff, who's played with countless legends and is one himself. Jason told amazing stories about Jerry and the Fifth Dimension, Elvis, and The Doors. Mind-blowing, and fantastic! He spoke of some of his other champions and heroes, his mother, a singer, who made him a pro at 16, Elton John, Bobby Caldwell, Robert Lamm, getting sober, Bill Champlin, David Foster, Tamara Champlin, the all-stars Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Micky Dolenz, and Joey Molland with whom he performed The Beatles White Album, my lord, do I want to see the replay of that! Generation Radio (I butchered that) the supergroup Jason put together with Jay DeMarcus of Rascal Flatts, with Deen Castronovo of Journey, who returned there, now replaced by superstar drummer Steve Ferrone. Jason spoke of his love and devotion to his beloved Tracy and their kids, the hardships and losses they've endured and weathered together, and they're great like for each other. Having just had the great good fortune to see Jason perform at Summerfest and then meet his bride, I got to witness this rockstar in action and then bear witness to what a fabulous couple they are. Jason and I talked for well over two hours and it felt like a minute. What a great, great, time, and… he sang… just a little, but still! I loved every moment and can't wait to hear about the next chapters, and hear and see them performed, as well. Jason Scheff Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Wed, July 5, 5 pm PT, 8 pm ET Streamed Live on The Facebook Replay here: https://bit.ly/3D2hmp2

Walt Disney World has a serious problem in Star Wars Galaxy's Edge and there's no easy solution. Our take on this, plus the Garden Rocks concert line-up, a lengthy Disney pool closure and top picks for Valentine's goodies at Disneyland and Walt Disney World.Do Disney Parks Have a Star Wars Problem? There's trouble brewing in Galaxy's Edge and it's not coming from the Dark Side. After months of persistent rumors and speculation about the value and experience of Disney's Galactic Starcruiser, Disney has announced that it was forced to cancel several Galactic Starcruiser dates in the summer and fall months due to low occupancy, which could be a troubling sign for the hotel's future. People who had booked were offered half-off to book again on a future date. Speculation has been everything from the cost, to the characters involved to the repeatability of the experience. For me, it's also an issue of the guest experience, or rather the pricey and intended immersive experience being ruined by obnoxious and other annoying guests who typically ruin things for others on virtually any Disney attraction. This type of behavior has gotten worse since Covid as the entitled few have been frequently ruining it for all--so much so that Disney has changed its acceptable guest behavior policies and publicized the fact. No matter what the reason, is there any way to fix the problem? For us, it's not the price alone: it's the experience. If you're paying that kind of money for an immersive experience, the risk of having it jeopardized by someone filming all the time and not taking part, is a no-go. In my opinion, Disney should ban all guests from bringing phones or any kind of devices, except in your room. Anyone acting out of accepted standards should be jettisoned through the airlock. Make this clear up front. --Garden Rocks Concert Lineup for the 2023 EPCOT International Flower & Garden FestivalThe Garden Rocks Concert Series Line-up is coming into view for the upcoming EPCOT International Flower & Garden Festival in March. This week is another special twofer! Imagine being brought into one of the biggest bands in the world at 23 years old to replace the face of the band. That's the lion's den bassist Jason Scheff strode into and remained for the next 31 years. Jason recently left the band to take care of some family matters and now has a new album with his new supergroup Generation Radio that is a total blast It's an album inspired by the magic of 80s rock radio and will surely put a smile on your face. Jason dispels a lot of myths in this conversation. Get ready to have your mind changed on a few things. Then we hear from singer, songwriter and actress Rebecca Pidgeon. Rebecca has had memorable roles in many of her husband David Mamet's movies like The Spanish Prisoner and State and Main as well as many others, but she's also had a long career as a singer. Her new album, Parts of Speech Pieces of Sound, was inspired by her yoga practice which is in keeping with her diverse interest in music as almost all of her albums feel different in theme and tone. She's a totally unique artist with an interesting story to tell. www.facebook.com/GenerationRadioBand www.rebeccapidgeonmusic.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

SUPPORT ME ON PATREON WATCH MUSIC is not a GENRE VIDEOS and MORE FEATURED SONG: REC – “Ripe” (from The Sunshine Seminar) Every band has a different dynamic, both for music and for business. Mick Jagger was right business-wise when he called the Beatles the “four-headed monster”, but on the music side they really just had the two heads. Most of U2's music is driven by two heads as well, but Larry Mullen Jr. started the band, so my guess is business-wise there's more equality overall. Fleetwood Mac has almost always been a complete mess on both sides, which makes their longevity & artistic success even more striking. Nirvana was that one troubled head for music, and likely pretty equal on the business end. Chicago was a special case. (I say was because they've been a shadow of themselves for a long time now, and more on that later.) They morphed. For their musical direction & business decisions to have changed so much and so often, you'd think their personnel did too. Nope. For all of their classic period, they were the core seven (and for a short stretch percussionist Laudir de Oliveira). After the death of Terry Kath & some growing pains (about which more below), their breakout comeback early 1980s period had six original members plus Chris Pinnick & Bill Champlin. After Peter Cetera left, he was seamlessly replaced with Jason Scheff, and Dawayne Bailey took over for Chris. When Danny Seraphine bowed out, Tris Imboden took over & stayed longer than any other drummer. And for the 1990s and almost all of this century, it's been the core four, Tris, Lou Pardini on keys, and a bunch of other changes. In the last few years, with Walt Parazaider retiring, it's down to three originals, Lou, and a handful of others who seem to be sticking around so far. Why do I go into that much detail? Two reasons. One, to show how much change a stalwart band needs to endure to have a career this long. And two, to show how this week's subject – the death of Terry Kath – made more of an impact on both the business & music trajectory of Chicago than any other event in their history. For those of you unfamiliar, a quick history. Terry was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Top ten in the minds of many. He was also one of the principal vocalists & writers of the band. His passion & dedication to expression above all else gave Chicago a huge part of their initial raison d'etre, and their depth & groundedness. Then in 1978, he died of an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot to the head. From that point on, Chicago was never the same. And in many ways never as good. You could say that the death of any core band member changes a band forever, but that's a sliding scale. Bonham's death ultimately ended Led Zeppelin, but I'd argue it didn't do a whole lot to change their music. The Who's sound did change when Keith Moon died, but they've always really been another two-headed monster. Cobain's death of course ended that band. As for the recent death of Taylor Hawkins, the impact remains to be seen. On this episode of Roger the Wild Child Show, we are joined by former Nashville recording Artist, Chad Brock, and singer/songwriter Tom Yankton!CHAD BROCK In high school, Brock played football & was offered a post-secondary scholarship to play sports. He turned down the scholarship, however, as his experiences in the school choir had convinced him to pursue a singing career. Brock moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to follow this dream, but he met with little success at first. In 1994, he signed a record deal with Warner Bros. Records, but he did not release any music for over three years.Warner Brothers and WCW got together to cross-promote Brock, and he trained at World Championship Wrestling's training facility, the WCW Power Plant. Chad wrestled for WCW from 1994 -1996, until an injury forced him to retire. He also appeared at several WCW events in 1999, where he was briefly involved in an angle with Curt Hennig. In 1998, Brock released his debut single, "Evangeline", which peaked at number 51 on the Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks (now Hot Country Songs) charts. That song's follow-up, the ballad "Ordinary Life", went on to become Brock's first major hit,[1] peaking at number 3 on the same chart, as well as number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100. Following that song's success, Brock released his self-titled debut album. Its third and final single, "Lightning Does The Work", reached number 19 in 1999.Brock's fourth chart single was a rewrite of Hank Williams, Jr.'s signature song "A Country Boy Can Survive", a number 2 hit for Williams in 1981. Chad's version, which featured Williams and George Jones, was entitled "A Country Boy Can Survive (Y2K Version)", was re-written with lyrics pertaining to the Year 2000 problem (abbreviated Y2K). The song served as the first single from Brock's 2000 album Yes!. Its second single was the title track, which went on to become Brock's only number-one Billboard hit,[1] as well as a number 22 hit on the Hot 100 chart. The third and last single from Yes! ("The Visit") peaked at number 21.2001 saw the release of Brock's 3rd and final album for Warner Bros.. Entitled III, it was less successful than its predecessor. III had only one chart entry in "Tell Me How", which failed to make the Top 40. This album also reprised Brock's three highest-charting singles ("Yes!", "Ordinary Life" and "Lightning Does The Work"). Shortly thereafter, he signed to Broken Bow Records, then a newly formed independent label. Although he released five singles for Broken Bow, four of which made the charts, he never put out a full album.TOM YANKTONTom Yankton's rowdy, high-energy, multi-million streaming, wildly-talented brand of award-winning, party crowd entertainment wouldn't be complete without, 1.) BE TRUE TO YOURSELF, BADFINGER GUITARIST, SINGER AND SONGWRITER JOEY MOLLAND’S FIRST ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL IN NEARLY 10 YEARS, IS DUE FROM OMNIVORE RECORDINGS ON OCTOBER 16. Album contains the singles “Rainy Day Man” and “Better Tomorrow”; produced by Mark Hudson (Ringo Starr, Harry Nilsson, Aerosmith, Ozzy Osbourne) You can listen to the first two singles at https://open.spotify.com/artist/1ir4qcqXLQRraLp8QYZkFo?si=pbp1K3ZoQj6kW7FJ7UWWvg The story of Badfinger is one of rock’s saddest and most tragic tales. But one thing is for certain: the group that practically invented “power pop” was abundantly filled with talent. To have three great songwriters in one band was reminiscent of the group’s original label founders, the Beatles. Badfinger’s singles are still regarded as pop gems some 50 years later: “Come and Get It,” “No Matter What,” “Day After Day,” and “Baby Blue.” Perhaps the most unheralded of the three in Badfinger was Liverpudlian guitarist Joey Molland. His songwriting talent started to blossom with the group’s finest album, 1971’s Straight Up. Molland contributed five songs to the group’s fourth platter including “I’d Die Babe,” “Sweet Tuesday Morning” and “Suitcase.” Joey continued to play and write as Badfinger motored through the ’70s recording and touring. But great albums like 1974’s Wish You Were Here were met with record company and personal mismanagement. And in 1975, the group’s leader, Pete Ham, tragically passed away. Molland eventually left the group, returned, and left again to launch his own solo career. He’s played in various groups and under the name Joey Molland’s Badfinger since 1983. His several solo albums won critical acclaim but nothing could have prepared us for his latest album. Omnivore Recordings is proud to announce the release of Be True to Yourself, a tour de force pop album by Molland co-written with producer Mark Hudson (producer of last year’s Losst And Founnd by Harry Nilsson, also on Omnivore). The album is filled with delicious pop hooks and features musical contributions from Joey’s friends (Julian Lennon, Micky Dolenz, Jason Scheff and Steve Holley). With front and back cover photography by Julian Lennon, this album is a veritable feast for the eyes and ears! So, sit back and “take it all” in from one of the genre’s progenitors ... We’re still doing it folks, though it’s certainly not easy. Winston becomes both a guest and a host for the first time—with the band Adeline Hotel stopping by the Zoom studio. We meet the band’s new Cetera - 23-year-old Jason Scheff - compare the band to the mid-’90s Bulls, and discuss how impossible it is to feel anything (about Chicago) anymore. Also: important information about Sam’s recent dental issues and Koebner! Andy plays Happy Man! The Stank is deputed! Yeah baby!
Show one of two with Joey Curatolo (Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles) and friend of the show Darin P. Murphy (Skyrocket) as they guest to help us look back at their shared 2019. It's sort of a Halloween-themed show, but not really! Including: A concert report on super-cool garage pop band Bleached! (Their album Don't You Think You've Had Enough? might be our favorite record of the year...) Another concert report on a Beatles tribute supergroup, with Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Badfinger's Joey Molland, Chicago's Jason Scheff, and Micky Dolenz! (Micky sang "Rocky Raccoon," and no one else is allowed to sing "Rocky Raccoon" anymore.) Kornflake hits the road again, does not find the Swan Boats, but does find coffee approved by the Godfather of Punk! We wish a Happy Birthday to one third of Wilson Phillips! A Halloween edition of the Pudding Pages leads to a discussion of something truly terrifying, the McRib! But nothing is more terrifying than the Top Ten songs this week in 1988! Seriously, it was 31 years ago, and we still wake up screaming...

Keith Howland is an American guitarist and singer. Since 1995, he has been the lead guitarist for the veteran pop-rock band, Chicago.Howland started playing the guitar at the age of seven, and he played in a number of bands during his school years. He attended high school in Richmond, Virginia, and graduated from James Madison University in 1986 with a degree in communications. In 1987, Keith moved to Los Angeles and took a job with Andy Brauer Studio Rentals, which helped him to make invaluable contacts in the music industry. He also continued playing as much as possible, including a 1993 summer tour with Rick Springfield. In 1995, Chicago was looking for a new lead guitarist following the departure of Dawayne Bailey. Howland was a long-time fan of the band and of their co-founding guitarist, Terry Kath. Howland appeared uninvited at the auditions, and attained a chance meeting with the band's bassist, Jason Scheff. He performed a last-minute audition, and was offered the job on the same day.Howland has also pursued projects outside the band, including projects he has done with Chicago's drummer Tris Imboden. Their collaborative effort is known as The Howland/Imboden Project, releasing two albums. The sound can be described as all-instrumental, jazz/rock/fusion. The eponymous The Howland/Imboden Project is a studio album, and Live At The Baked Potato is a live recording. In November 2007 Keith released an album titled KeCraig. This album started as a jam session in November 2007 with his brother Craig. His latest solo project is a collaboration with former Chicago keyboardist, guitarist, and vocalist Bill Champlin on Champlin's 2008 solo album No Place Left to Fall.

When you mention the name Chicago, people roll out the mental red carpet and pay homage to one of the most influential rock bands ever. And, after 40 years of delivering classic hits, their momentum and influence still remains strong with their recent 2006 release of Chicago XXX. If you’re familiar with the band’s music, then you’re familiar with Jason Scheff, one of Chicago’s lead vocalists and bass player for the past 21 years. Over the years, Jason’s talent has helped Chicago deliver some of the most played and loved music around the world. His writing skills have also contributed hits such as Will You Still Love Me, and What Kind of Man Would I Be. But don’t think that Jason is only Chicago deep. He comes from deep musical roots, as his father was Elvis’ perennial bassist for years. Amazing where a musical heritage can take you. Inside MusiCast welcomes one of Chicago’s best – Jason Scheff.
About Today's Guest Jason Scheff was a 20-something singer with a drug problem when he got his big break to audition to become the singer and bass player for one of the hottest bands of all times—Chicago. That was 1985. He cleaned up his act, won over the band, and for most that would be "the rest of the story." Fast forward 30 years and Jason isn't just sitting back playing gigs and collecting royalties. No sir. Hear what he is doing to stay current and rich in this episode of The Sales Podcast.
