Have you ever felt like you're doing everything “right” for your health but still not feeling your best? Maybe it's the brain fog that won't lift, the energy crash mid-afternoon, or the bloating that seems to happen no matter what you eat. It's frustrating, right? But what if those symptoms weren't “just normal” but rather signals your body is craving something deeper—like a reset? In this episode of Rooted in Wellness, I sit down with Dr. James DiNicolantonio, a cardiovascular research scientist, to explore the silent ways our diet and lifestyle might be holding us back. From the dangers of seed oils to the surprising impact of nutrient deficiencies, Dr. James and I dive into the science behind optimizing your energy, digestion, and mental clarity. We also discuss the critical role of salt in brain function, how to manage sugar cravings without complete restriction, and why your morning coffee might be draining your body more than fueling it. Dr. James DiNicolantonio is a leading expert in cardiovascular health and nutrition science, with over 300 publications in medical literature and bestselling books like The Salt Fix and Superfuel. He is also the Medical Advisor for IM8, and provides exclusive insights into the groundbreaking science driving IM8's mission—a company dedicated to revolutionizing health and wellness through cutting-edge, evidence-based solutions designed to enhance vitality and longevity. We have a rerun this week; Robot is in Wales. We have a new tandem episode coming soon. This week we have our first tandem episode in, well, forever. Last summer Skratch Labs released a new product, Superfuel, that is a high-calorie drink for endurance athletes. It's a drink mix built on a fundamentally different […]
Great questions from listeners in this Q&A show, including the subtle and natural taste of B.rad Superfuel versus most ultra-sweet proteins, walking barefoot safely, if I can really “sprint” for 30,40,50 seconds? (no! that's a HIIT session), are sleep requirements genetic? (yes—hear more in my show about sleep with RiseScience founder Jeff Kahn) and tips for custom designing a sensible cold therapy routine. I also talk about how Australia boasts 10% of our audience (guessing it's probably because they love outdoor, active lifestyles), recommend blood tests for peak performers to strive for way better than today's pathetic “normal”, and talk about if competitive mindsets are genetic or trainable (both!) and how to cultivate pure motivation as a triathlete by referencing my book, How To Improve Your (Triathlon) Time. Finally, I talk about the Blue Zones documentary—the inaccuracy of the cherry-picked and misrepresented “plant-based” attribute (Blue Zones eat well-sourced animal products), the real secret to Blue Zones longevity (such as extensive movement and strong social connections), whether or not I am completely honest about my own health and fitness journey, and if I'm willing to change my mind in regards to health information (if you've been listening to me for a while, you can guess this answer easily!). TIMESTAMPS: Kenny wants to share his enthusiasm for B.rad's Whey Protein, even though at first, he thought the taste too bland. You want to be careful when reading labels. “natural flavoring” or “natural flavors” is code word for chemicals. [00:48] Are Peluvas superior to barefoot for making structural changes faster? [05:14] Aberdeen Shire Guitar Teacher asks: How long should you sprint to achieve the health benefits? A true sprint is anything that's eight seconds or less in duration. [08:56] David Gifford works hard and really needs his sleep. How does that work with a spouse who is the opposite? [18:52] On YouTube, Red Eye asks about cold therapy sessions and the Shiver Protocol. [21:44] Alan Placencia from Australia wants input on blood tests. Getting a fasting insulin number is very important. The triglycerides to HDL ratio is also important. [25:32] Male hormone panels indicate how you compare for your age group. Unfortunately, there has been a steady decline in the average male testosterone level. {[31:30] James Hall asks to what extent do you reckon that mindset and mentality is genetic versus what is learned and trainable? [34:07] Alistair Henderson talks about Brad's Triathlon book and about the Blue Zone, the long living peoples around the world that have an active, energetic lifestyle [36:31] Free Speech Joe commented on Apple Podcasts that he appreciates Brad's style of honesty and flexibility. A year and a half ago, I began an experiment and decided to make a deliberate attempt to do away with the restrictive dietary practices that I had adhered to (or dabbled in) in the past, such as keto and fasting. Instead, I started striving for maximum cellular energy status by increasing my intake of nutritious foods, and switching out my morning fasting protocol for a huge bowl of fruit and a high protein smoothie with my Superfuel protein supplement. In this show, I highlight some of the work and evolving attitudes from people in the Ancestral health space, and share compelling quotes from Dr. Tommy Wood and Jay Feldman, who both have really prompted me to rethink and reflect on some of the major messages that have framed the popularity of restrictive diets. If you have been reconsidering the role restrictive dietary strategies play in your life, you don't want to miss this episode! In this episode, I sit down with one of my closest friends, Jess Nash, to discuss friendship, motherhood, and how the two intersect. We talk about our friendship “breakup” and how we reconnected after several years of not staying in touch, how having children has bonded us even further, and how essential it is for mothers not to judge each other for their parenting choices. We also discuss why it's so important for mothers to find a postpartum community and we answer listener questions on preparing for motherhood, making space for conversation not centered around our children, and supporting a friend who is struggling with infertility or has miscarried.Key Takeaway / Points:On our friendship “breakup” and how we reconnectedHow having children bonded us furtherOn friends disagreeing with how they mother their childrenOn the importance of mothers not judging each otherOn finding community during postpartumAnswering listener questions on friendship and motherhood, including:Why friends “go quiet” after they have childrenOn preparing for the identity shift that comes with motherhoodOn celebrating each others' wins in friendshipsOn making space for conversation not centered around childrenOn supporting a friend who is struggling with infertility or has miscarriedFind the “Friendship In Our Thirties” poem hereThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. Vogue's Chioma Nnadi is a force to be reckoned with—and with Fashion Week and fall on the horizon, we thought there was no one better to sit down with than the very woman who is constantly ahead of the style and culture eight-ball. After all, that's the exact job of a Vogue editor. With a cue from boss Anna Wintour, one must always be on the lookout for what's next. On that note, we discuss the influence of the Lydia-Tár effect, Barbie-core, and Wednesday Addams. Chioma shares her #1 celebrity style icon, young designers to watch, favorite vintage haunts, and why her approach to shopping is emotional. Jessica Seinfeld has a really simple mission. She just wants to help you. Growing up with a mother who loved to cook, she was an early adopter of the home-cooked meal among her peers. When she had a picky eater for a child, she was put to the test to find clever ways to ensure proper nutrition was met. She never set out to write a cookbook, but now, years later, she has five (all of which are New York Times Best Sellers). Her latest, “Vegan, At Times,” is for those who are vegan-curious but not looking for the extreme commitment. With moderation at the center of everything she does, we were so excited to sit down with her and learn about her approach to eating healthy foods that taste just as amazing. We talk vegan-ism, the importance of family dinners, taking care of yourself (she's a devoted water drinker!) and so much more. Please note that this episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. In this episode, I sit down with one of my best friends, Deanna DiCroce, to talk about all things adult friendships and how she and I have stayed close through the years. We compare communication styles, how we have navigated staying in touch despite being in different places in our lives, and why it's useful to think of friendships as seesaws. She also shares how open and honest communication is most helpful when trying to support a friend in postpartum, why pressure and expectations can sink a friendship, and why letting friendships go is also okay. Finally, we discuss the importance of checking our egos and needs for external validation, and why working through conflict benefits all relationships.Key Takeaway / Points:How we have stayed close over the past twelve years despite being in very different places in our livesOn knowing your friend's communication styles and navigating around those to keep in touchOn thinking of friendships as seesaws with ebbs and flowsOn being open about how friends can support you and vice versa, especially during postpartumOn not putting such pressure and high expectations on friendshipsOn letting friendships drift apart and not needing dramatic endingsOn not letting small moments define a friendshipOn checking your ego and need for external validationWhy working through conflict is healthy in all relationshipsThis episode may contain paid endorsements and advertisements for products and services. In this Huddle, Bob Seebohar and Dina Griffin meet with Dr. Allen Lim of Skratch Labs to talk about the unique carbohydrate “highly branched cyclic dextrin.” Put on your learning hats and hear how this product is different than most others on the market. Plus, Dr. Lim is a great story teller and uses understandable analogies to explain science in creative ways. We cover: · The impetus for creating the Skratch Superfuel product and what world-class athlete Gwen Jorgensen had to do with it · What Lego blocks have to do with gastrointestinal distress · Why some athletes really can't do solid food for performance fueling · Considerations for meeting hydration needs if you are also drinking your calories from Skratch Superfuel · The type of athlete Superfuel is best suited for · Dental hygiene and what some ingredients in sports nutrition products do to your teeth · Dr. Lim's go to breakfast and what he enjoys eating on the bike More about Dr. Allen Lim: Allen received his PhD from the Applied Exercise Science Lab at CU Boulder, where he focused on the development of portable power meters to quantify the demands of professional cycling. After graduating, he worked on the Pro Cycling Tour as a sport scientist, then founded Skratch Labs – a sports nutrition company based in Boulder, CO. Allen is also the co-author of the Feed Zone cookbook series with Chef Biju Thomas. In his spare time, he continues to consult athletes that range the gamut from the LUX Junior Cycling Team to Olympic Gold Medalist Gwen Jorgensen. It is an episode for the decommissioning devotees this week with tales of explosions, safety concerns and platforms going overseas, with a bit of green fuel thrown in for good measure. Mark kicks off proceedings by telling us about an intricate and subtle approach to breaking apart the Ninian Northern using shedloads of explosives. But despite looking like the newest film in the Die Hard franchise, it's left many unimpressed. There's more disappointment in the decom world after Harbour Energy became the latest firm to confirm it would be sending work overseas, with the Balmoral platform due to travel to Denmark in the coming weeks. And there's more goings-on in Port of Cromarty Firth where discussions are ongoing about creating a huge power-to-X (not a typo) facility. Energy Voice, in association with Deloitte, Fasken and Costain, are delighted to present a virtual event series that digs deeper into the prospects for hydrogen in order to separate the hard facts from the hype. He is also the founder of Mercola.com which has been the most visited natural health site on the internet for the last ten years with over 15 million unique visitors every month. His goal is to catalyze a complete transformation of the fatally flawed health care system that is responsible for prematurely killing thousands of people every day. He’s the author of numerous books including Fat For Fuel, The No Grain Diet, Superfuel and his new book which comes out in April, KetoFast: Rejuvenate Your Health with a Step-by-Step Guide to Timing Your Ketogenic Meals. We explored myriad topics in this episode, including: Why fat isn’t necessarily bad for you and paradoxically, how it can be good for you and what kind of food you should be eating A much more manageable alternative to 3 day-water fasts that has as many, if not more benefit Why cancer may have a lot to do, not just with damaged DNA, but also metabolic dysfunction, and how fasting and a ketogenic diet can help you live a longer, healthier life Joseph picked up a number of my own previously flawed beliefs in this conversation so I’m sure you will learn a thing or two, if not many more, to help you optimise your health and performance. Our audio connection wasn’t the strongest so the conversation does drop in and out occasionally, but there is so much gold in this episode that I hope you’ll put up with it. Topics Discussed: Joseph’s many books and his early inspiration How our food is making us sick Why (the right kind of) fat is good for you Is cancer a result of damaged DNA or metabolic dysfunction? The role of mitochondria How the Big Food lobby essentially pointed the finger at fat in order to sell more cheap carbs How dangerous documentaries like ‘What The Health’ may force people down an unhealthy line Exercise and fasting - when should you eat, and should you train in a fasted state? The afternoon crash and how to avoid it When your body needs carbs The difference between a cyclical and conventional keto diet Cold showers and mitochondrial function Evolutionary biology and fasting Should you supplement your diet with MCT oils and keytone esters?
