In the wake of the COVID-19 recession, many economists were describing the United States’ economic recovery as K-shaped. Basically, high-income Americans bounced back quicker than those at the lower end of the income scale. So, did we ever ditch that K shape? The person who coined the phrase “K-shaped recovery” back then, says no. On the show today, Peter Atwater, president of Financial Insyghts and adjunct professor at the College of William & Mary, explains why he believes economic inequality has grown since the pandemic recovery, why considerable wage gains for low-wage workers tell only part of the story and the risks of letting a K-shaped economy run wild. Then, we’ll get into how the fragility of global shipping supply chains could be playing into Federal Reserve decisions on interest rates. And, happy wedding anniversary, Susanna! Today I'm answering a listener question: How do you know when you're done? It seems straightforward on the surface—you're done when the essay is published, when the book comes out, or when the workshop is over. But not every writing project has defined edges. In fact, this episode argues that when we're wondering if we're done with something, we're actually asking the wrong question.  Conversation Starters “When something is finished, it might mean something is true. It could mean someone will read your words. It means you now need to relate to this part of your life differently. You need to tell a new story about what happened to yourself. None of these things are bad, but when we're habituated to the old narratives, change is always hard.” Episode Highlights Understanding completion as a phased experience Questions to ask yourself to gauge where you are in the process Examples of finishing—from blogging to Facebook groups The advice MFK Fisher gave Ruth Reichel that changed the course of her career (and her relationship to finishing) Linkable Mentions Episode 26: Cultivating Trust in the Writer's Life Episode 50: Make Space, Not Time & Other Insights From the Sacred Pause Julia Gets Real With Ruth Reichel Let's Connect Visit my website: nicolemgulotta.com Sign up for my encouraging Substack newsletter Curl up with one of my books: WILD WORDS and EAT THIS POEM Say hi on Instagram: @nicolegulotta.author

Your Stories Don’t Define You, How You Tell Them Will

331 Are You Ready For Change? Change is inevitable however it is up to you on how well you deal with that change and if your preconceived biases will influence you in the future. In this episode Sarah Elkins and Divya Ramachandran discuss change, biases, and how important approaching change with curiosity.   Highlights Acknowledging the differences between yourself and others and approaching those differences with curiosity and kindness.  Taking accountability for what has shaped you and learning to move forward in the best way possible.  Being is the hardest thing to do, it's okay to struggle but remember to take time to just be. Learn from kids, enjoy the journey and just try to have fun.    Quotes “You've got biases, we all do, and that's okay but we're not going to act on them in a way that's unkind, we are going to be respectful, we're going to be curious, we're going to be open. Be conscious of your biases and choose your actions appropriately. And I think this is a conversation that we are struggling to have today, everyone is just struggling to call it out and say “Hey you're different. You're different from me, I notice and it's okay for me to notice, But I'm not going to hold that against you.” “Understanding what are some of those experiences, thoughts, beliefs that have really shaped us. And I say us because I got to do the work as much as they do.”   Dear Listeners it is now your turn, Have you worked with a coach? Have you really understood what the expectations are, what your expectations are? Have you ever worked with someone you didn't quite jive with and then you just gave up instead of finding somebody else that might have served you better in that relationship? I'm curious to hear your experiences and whether you were looking for an advisor or coach, were you clear internally about what you needed in that moment? And are you being fair to the coach or therapist that you've been working with? In terms of knowing that you're ready to develop and self reflect and get to a different point in your life. Are you ready for change, because change can be very scary. And, as always, thank you for listening.    About Divya Divya Ramachandran, Ph.D., P.C.C., is a distinguished leadership coach, transitioning from a successful career in tech to empowering leaders at tech startups. Born to South Asian immigrants in Salt Lake City, Utah, Divya navigated the complexities of identity and excellence from a young age. Her academic journey led her from computer engineering to a profound discovery at UC Berkeley, where she realized her passion for using technology to address human needs. This epiphany, coupled with a transformative experience in executive coaching, redirected her path toward leadership coaching. Divya specializes in guiding tech startup leaders, leveraging her expertise in energy awareness, cognitive behavioral coaching, and emotional intelligence to foster trust, connection, and effective communication within teams. Her work focuses on helping leaders achieve clarity, resolve conflicts, and enhance productivity, fundamentally believing in the power of understanding oneself to lead others effectively. Be sure to check out Divya's LinkedIn! As well as her free guide “How To Do Hard Things: It's About Clarity, Not Time.”!   About Sarah "Uncovering the right stories for the right audiences so executives, leaders, public speakers, and job seekers can clearly and actively demonstrate their character, values, and vision." In my work with coaching clients, I guide people to improve their communication using storytelling as the foundation of our work together. What I've realized over years of coaching and podcasting is that the majority of people don't realize the impact of the stories they share - on their internal messages, and on the people they're sharing them with. My work with leaders and people who aspire to be leaders follows a similar path to the interviews on my podcast, uncovering pivotal moments in their lives and learning how to share them to connect more authentically with others, to make their presentations and speaking more engaging, to reveal patterns that have kept them stuck or moved them forward, and to improve their relationships at work and at home. The audiobook, Your Stories Don't Define You, How You Tell Them Will is now available! Included with your purchase are two bonus tracks, songs recorded by Sarah's band, Spare Change, in her living room in Montana. Be sure to check out the Storytelling For Professionals Course as well to make sure you nail that next interview!

As we step into the new year, it's time for reflection, goal-setting, and navigating the challenges life throws our way. Before we dive into our conversation, a quick reminder to check out onlinehockeytraining.com for exclusive access to my extensive database of off-ice stickhandling, passing, and hockey shooting drills. It's a gift from me to you. In this episode, we take a unique approach to the typical New Year's resolutions discussion, steering away from their often futile nature. Instead, we explore strategies and techniques from impactful books that have shaped my journey over the years. We kick off with insights from "Hyperfocus: How to Be More Productive in a World of Distraction" by Chris Bailey. Delving into the importance of attention, deliberate focus, and the science behind productivity, we uncover practical ways to achieve our goals. Quotes from the book, such as "Productivity is not about cramming more into our days but doing the right thing in each moment," challenge conventional notions. Next up, we explore "The Power of Full Engagement" by James E. Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Shifting the paradigm from time management to energy management, we discuss principles like balancing energy expenditure with intermittent renewal and living life as a series of sprints. Notable quotes touch on the impact of positive rituals, hydration, and the mental equivalent of "eating junk food" through excessive television watching. We round off the episode by encouraging you to jump into 2024 with a renewed focus on your values, lessons learned, and the person you aspire to be. Whether it's improving your fitness routine, reducing screen time, or honing your hockey skills, the goal is to find your peak performance zone and live with intention. Thanks for stopping by, enjoy this episode and have a powerfully productive day :) Online Hockey Training Largest Online Data-Base Off-Ice Stickhandling, Passing and Shooting Drills https://www.onlinehockeytraining.com/ In-person lessons with Coach Lance https://www.sweethockeycoach.com/ If you really connected with something today, Pick Up a Copy of Your Own (Links Below) Hyperfocus How to Be More Productive in a World of Distractionby Chris Baileyhttps://www.amazon.com/Hyperfocus-More-Productive-World-Distraction/dp/0525522239?&linkCode=sl1&tag=heroic097-20&linkId=e99aeb7cf2fb673cbfd421dfb1533a6b&language=en_US&ref_=as_li_ss_tlThe Power of Full EngagementManaging Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewalby James E. Is your exercise working against your hormones? Could that be making you more tired, or prone to injury? Is your routine limiting your performance results?  It's widely accepted that exercise is a pillar of good health. For women, though, there's a gap in exercise recommendations designed based on their unique hormone profile.  In a 2021 British Journal of Sports Medicine study, 86% of exercising women experience tiredness/fatigue and or other menstrual cycle symptoms that have a greater likelihood of missing exercise or competition (or work).  TEDx Talk: https://www.flippingfifty.com/TEDx Only 39% of all exercise science and sports medicine research features females.  Females go through an average of 7 phases of hormone changes… Save Your Spot Unless you knew to ask, was this made for me, based on science about me, there is a strong chance you have been doing a workout proven for a young athletic man or a mouse…Hormones that can mean you use more fat for fuel at certain times, may be more prone to injury at others, and be primed for strength gains during certain windows too.  This post is an excerpt from a recently written article for a third party. It explores the science of women's menstrual cycles and exercise protocols to support better results with reduced risk of injury or unnecessary fatigue.  If you're in post menopause without a cycle, stay with me, there's valuable information for you here too. A Review of the Menstrual Cycle During a normal menstrual cycle, estrogen and progesterone take turns driving the process of maturing and releasing an egg and preparing the uterus for possible pregnancy. Estrogen rises in the first half of the cycle, peaks at ovulation, then falls in the second half as progesterone rises. Progesterone is released by the rupturing of the egg follicle during ovulation. Testosterone too is secreted in “surges” around the time of ovulation, and again before your period.  Let's explore each phase of the female cycles..  Menstruation/Early Follicular Phase During the bleed, the beginning of the Follicular phase, and for the first few days women often still feel fatigue. Estrogen and progesterone are both at their lowest point just before your period.  If this is true it can be intuitive to cut back and go for walks or do a restorative yoga session instead of more vigorous exercise. More gentle exercise is a proven method of relieving cramps and menstrual symptoms. If you're prone to pushing yourself hard through days you're not feeling it and finding your fitness level doesn't benefit, try backing off. Gradually rising estrogen levels will kick in and a return to a regular strength and HIIT routine, if that's a part of a woman's exercise routine, by about day 7 is expected.  Say, you like to workout and find it hard to take time off. Your period can be a good time to do more functional workouts that involve unilateral (single limbed) exercises. This allows you to reach muscle fatigue at lighter loads less likely to tax your adrenal system already dealing with menstruation. If pushing through tough workouts leaves you more exhausted, frame your period as an active recovery period that enables harder work when it's over. Mid and Late Follicular As estrogen rises from the start of your period and progesterone remains low you have a window where you may more easily make strength gains. Generally, within a week of their period starting women feel able to do more volume and recover faster. This may be the most powerful you feel during the month. Even though you may tolerate more volume, don't skip recovery (it's when fitness happens, after all). Find volume in the addition of weight, sets, or repetitions, rather than more frequency. That will prevent forfeit the recovery needed to reap the rewards.  You want to continue to reduce impact and rapid change of direction. Your rigid tendons (as a result of high estrogen) support strength gains since they afford the ability to lift heavier but estrogen also causes laxity of ligaments along with reduced neuromuscular control and means easy injury. So, while you can do High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), focus on bicycling, swimming, or elliptical rather than multidirectional or high impact options.  You could also still be tired and need additional recovery because your hormones were at an all-time low just before your period. This is no time for comparisons. (See Note) Whatever you're feeling, honor it with an appropriate training and recovery response. Note: The State of Women's Exercise Science Science is still relying on women's diaries or apps to collect information. Women often report feeling their strongest and most energetic during days 7-14. This may have to do with better insulin sensitivity during this phase as compared to the luteal phase. The female body is primed to burn fat and gain muscle during this time.  Ovulation Ovulation occurs in the middle of follicular and luteal phases. According to women's hormone expert, Dr. Jolene Brighton,  it's a one-day event with still peaking estrogen levels, when progesterone is cued to start rising.  Luteal Phase  This is the last two weeks of your cycle when many women begin to feel more tired or less motivated to exercise. As progesterone rises, because of its anti-estrogenic effects, performance is lower than usual. It's when estrogen is high in comparison to progesterone in the cycle that performance increases. So, there is a dramatic difference for some women in the strength and energy they have in the first two weeks of their cycle compared to the luteal, or last two weeks. Many women also begin to have cravings related to Pre-Menstrual Syndrome (PMS)... Each woman responds uniquely…[Includes tips on nutrition for blood sugar stabilization] What About Testosterone…. No Cycle? Periodization Still Reigns in Postmenopausal  The concept of periodization doesn't pertain just to women, nor only to women having a period. It's been a longtime tool of strength & conditioning coaches and personal trainers used to produce optimal benefits with reduced injury risk. Exercise benefits require a level of overload beyond daily activities of life. In order for (reasonable) overload to be beneficial and not damaging, there needs to be conscious planning of the overload and adequate rest.  Both male and female athletes benefit from exercise periodization, males minus the actual period, of course. Cycles of periodization (10) exist within weeks, months and a year. Female cycles will do best honored outside of periodization.  It's Not Time to Slow Down For post menopausal women, there's both more latitude and reduced obstacles of fluctuating energy and safety due to hormonal change.  With reduced levels of estrogen, adequate intensity is needed more than ever to offset menopause symptoms and increase muscle, bone and brain health. The best partner of adequate intensity is adequate recovery. So, cycling times of work with times of recovery will always be the key to optimizing women's fitness.  Four Week Post Menopause Cycling  Week 1: Functional Strength (unilateral, multi directional) Week 2: Strength w Power (moderately heavy with speed on lift) Week 3: Hypertrophy (heavy with fewer repetitions) Week 4: Endurance (lighter with higher repetitions)  Female cycles for exercise don't have to be complex, but it should not be by accident. Exercise with just a little more thought can give you the optimal energy and results you want and deserve. Creating online courses does not require a huge investment in time or money. Although they certainly can cost tens of thousands of dollars to produce, with professional video editing and branding, they don't have to. In fact, my favorite way to create and launch a course is with my future students! This follows agile design principles (check out the agile manifesto here). The goal is developing rapidly, with frequent input from key stakeholders, not building so much behind the scenes that what you're working on becomes out-of-date or out of touch with what your audience and potential future students actually need. This is one of the episodes I reference most frequently from the Pivot podcast (originally aired December 1, 2019), so I'm replaying it here for you today in case you're newer to the JB universe! He used his knowledge to co-found the Johnson & Johnson Human Performance Institute. He has appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show and often writes for the Harvard Business Review. He is the author of 17 self-help books, including his most recent, Leading with Character. It is his belief that our character is our most powerful tool when it comes to optimizing performance in our home and work lives. Tony Schwartz's Perspective Tony Schwartz is an American journalist and business book author. In the 1980s, he co-authored Donald Trump's The Art of the Deal. Tony has also co-authored a book with the then CEO of Walt Disney Company, Michael Eisner. He writes a bi-weekly column for The New York Times on financial news. Introduction “The more we take responsibility for the energy we bring to the world, the more empowered and productive we become. The more we blame others or external circumstances, the more negative and compromised our energy is likely to be.” — Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Can you reach your peak performance levels without the right sort of energy? Did you know that there is more than one type of energy that fuels your success? The Power of Full Engagement emphasizes the importance of energy for both sports and professional performance. In the digital age, time management is no longer an option. We have access to the rest of the world 24/7. The Power of Full Engagement tells us how to reclaim control of our energy rather than our time. Released in 2003, it is a New York Times bestseller and has helped many companies improve efficiency. StoryShot #1: Energy, Not Time, Is Our Most Precious Resource “To be fully engaged, we must be physically energized, emotionally connected, mentally focused and spiritually aligned with a purpose beyond our immediate self-interest.” — Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. Our performance runs on the currency of energy. The best energy state for improving performance is full engagement. The time we spend on something is not what makes our life work. Instead, the energy we bring to that time is important. Four principles underpin full engagement. The first type of energy is physical. We all understand physical energy. It is the type that helps us move. As with all energy, physical energy depends on flexibility, endurance, and strength. The second type of energy is emotional. Emotional flexibility allows us to express a vast range of feelings. We experience different emotions in different situations. We can also experience several emotions during one experience. For example, a scary experience might include fear,

In the episode, “A Discussion On Psychosis, Lived Experience, and Creativity with Artist John F. Gerrard, Author of "We Make Clocks, Not Time" (S3, E12), John opens the conversation about this largely misunderstood headspace by sharing his personal story and what he learned coming out on the other side of psychosis. We discuss John's book, We Make Clocks, Not Time: My Lived Experience with Psychosis, Creativity, and the Ideas That Have Helped Me, opening up the conversation on an array of philosophical questions regarding psychosis and mental illness, from self-determination and free will, to the romanticization of the tortured artist, to the essential self, to the language of labels, to rethinking God.With the message that there is no shame in psychosis, that lived experience matters, and that creativity can be an integral part of our mental health, John also discusses some strategies that have worked for him in his own recovery.  Describing psychosis as connecting to something larger than life, John harnesses elusive topics like what is the nature of delusion, the mystery of dreams, and the subtle differences found in psychotic experiences compared to those that are spiritual in nature.  John brings philosophy into the conversation about extreme mental states and stresses that just because something is not commonly experienced among the norm, doesn't make it pathological.Bio:John is a multidisciplinary artist, with a focus on visual art. In his teens and 20s he was active creatively as a musician, touring across North America and playing locally. He also did graphic design work for bands and small businesses. John was trained by the Canadian Mental Health Association as a peer support worker. Since then, he's been developing his art practice with mental health advocacy work.  He has also worked with Branch Out Neurological Foundation, making images based on interactions with neuroscientists, and taking part in their charity events for three years now. In 2019 he had my first international show in Chicago as a part of the Some People Everybody exhibition. This multidisciplinary project examines the ethics, people, processes, and systems that constitute the maintenance of, and barriers to, health for human beings. Work backward from the goal. Every significant result starts with a small idea. The pandemic halted many people's plans, and many lost their drive and motivation because of the uncertainty they had to face. Realign yourself to what motivated you at the start.Set boundaries, let others know when your work is over and be firm and stable with it. When you let people know when you'll be off, and until what time you'll be available, you might find that people will respect that.   "Have a balanced lifestyle. Don't just work non-stop because you'll burn out; no one can do that and maintain that… you need to realign yourself, focus on what you wanted at the start." — Rex Afrasiabi. Resources: The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal by Jim Loehr and Tony SchwartzWorking Backwards: Insights, Stories, and Secrets from Inside Amazon by Colin Bryar and Bill Carr See Dean's TedTalk “Why Business Needs Intuition” here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EEq9IYvgV7I  Connect with Rex Afrasiabi: Website: http://www.malegal.com.au/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rex_afrasiabi_lawyer/?hl=enLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/rexafra/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rex.afrasiabi Connect with Dean:YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCgqRK8GC8jBIFYPmECUCMkwWebsite: https://www.mfileadership.com/The Mission Statement E-Newsletter: https://www.mfileadership.com/blog/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/deannewlund/Twitter: https://twitter.com/deannewlundFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissionFacilitators/Email: dean.newlund@mfileadership.comPhone: 1-800-926-7370

Mk 4:35-40 (tpt) “Let's cross over to the other side of the lake.” Suddenly, as they were crossing the lake, a ferocious tempest arose, with violent winds and waves that were crashing into the boat until it was all but swamped. But Jesus was calmly sleeping in the stern, resting on a cushion. So they shook him awake, saying, “Teacher, don't you even care that we are all about to die!” Fully awake, he rebuked the storm and shouted to the sea, “Hush! Calm down!” All at once the wind stopped and howling and the water became calm. Then he turned to his disciples and said to them, “Why are you so afraid? Haven't you learned to trust yet?” 1. When Today Meets Tomorrow in the Cloud with Siemens' Bill Boswell - Futurum Tech Podcast Interview Series

On this special episode of the Futurum Tech Podcast — Interview Series, host Daniel Newman welcomes Bill Boswell, Vice President of Marketing at the Siemens Digital Industries Software, to discuss digital transformation in the age of COVID-19 and what companies across all industries are facing.   It's Not Time to Slow Down   We are in an unprecedented time right now. Companies have the opportunity to pause and look at what they're doing across the board. How they're operating, what technologies are being used, how employees function. This is not the time to slow down. This is the time to embrace digital transformation. Some companies understand that and are innovating and collaborating faster than ever before. Today's products are smarter and more personalized. More data is being collected than ever before. And many companies are blurring the lines between the digital and physical worlds.   Siemens helps customers use technologies to find opportunities in their industries. Customers are using automation in their supply chain. They are making decisions with technologies like digital twins. They are using software applications that run in the cloud to manage business more efficiently.   Siemens is not just a software development company. They also have factories and manufacturing plants across the globe which gives them a unique opportunity to use the technology that their customers use. Bill pointed out that Siemens has the opportunity to be working right alongside customers, understanding their pain points, knowing what they need in order to speed up the technology of innovation.   Digital Twins Improve Production   One of the great things that Siemens offers to customers is a comprehensive digital twin. There are a lot of definitions of ‘digit twin' out there, but the way Siemens looks at it depends on your use case and industry. There's a digital twin of the product that is the design of the product. Everything from your customer requirements to the physical simulation, design, electrical, and mechanical. Then there's the digital twin of production, which covers manufacturing, planning, and simulating the workstations of the entire factory as you move through the process.   The next digital twin covers performance that allows you to see how it is operating, and then you can close the loop back into your digital twin of the design or your digital twin in the production to make the whole product or the whole production better.   Industrial IoT Isn't Your Mama's IoT   Most of the time when we think about IoT, we think about the smart speaker in our house or maybe the wearable on our wrist. But industrial IoT covers so much more than that. It could be a smart machine. It could be a smart manufacturing line, smart robots. It could be smart trains. It could be wind turbines. It can be energy grids. It can be entire infrastructures for cities.   The consumer IoT products have to be manufactured somewhere. Industrial IoT goes behind the scenes. What kind of sensors do you need during the manufacturing process. What kind of smart machines do you need? And then ultimately, what do you do with the data you're collecting.   Edge Computing or the Cloud?   These devices, whether it's consumer IoT or industrial IoT, create a lot of data and we have a lot of choices of where we are going to store and interact with that data. There are some analytics that you want to do as close to where the sensors are as possible, and that may be because you want to have reduced latency or no delay for health and safety kinds of things.   You may also want to do some edge computing because you can only transfer data around so fast. You need to be able to do the stream process close to where the device is to possibly optimize how much data is being sent to the cloud. Companies today are learning to put their compute resources in the right spot and it's usually a hybrid combination.   Companies, especially manufacturers are using the edge and computing closer to the device in order to make decisions almost instantly. They are able to realize the power of real-time analytics. But then going a step further, Bill noted that companies are able to take this data and analytics and connect it with their other systems like CRM or ERP systems that help the company operate.   IoT as a Service Working with the Cloud   Customers today face the dilemma of being an IoT company and building the sensors and services they need themselves or buying an off the shelf solution that might not fit all of their needs. Siemens realized there was a middle ground. Companies could buy IoT as a Service on top of their cloud to get the best of both worlds. Siemens isn't reinventing the wheel, they're enhancing it to fit what customers need.   If you'd like to learn more about Siemens, their offerings and partnerships check out their website and be sure to listen to the whole episode, too. How do you speed up your writing process and what causes it to slow down to a crawl? Surprisingly, discussion and feedback play an incredibly powerful role in unblocking Writer's Block. The more you're stuck, the greater the reason to invite discussion and feedback. The moment you do, it causes you to explain the concepts in a way that catches you totally by surprise! Click here to read online: Writer's Block 3/4: Why Discussion and Feedback Are A Writer's Secret Weapon (And How Professionals Use it to Their Advantage) ________________________________________ C) Discussion and Feedback If you drop me in Kyoto or Paris, I'll walk happily for hours. However, the moment I have to exercise, I detest the very concept of walking. And yet, day after day, year after year, we go for a walk. It's healthy of course, and I actually learn stuff or listen to music, but the most crucial part of the walk is the part right up to the traffic lights. It's about a ten-minute walk from our house to the lights, and that's when I talk to Renuka about what I've been reading or watching. And there are days when Renuka is “sleep walking”, so I'll get nods, but some days she's wide awake, and we have a discussion. If I'm lucky, she'll disagree with almost everything I'm saying. Discussion is a great way to get prepared to write an article I remember the author, Malcolm Gladwell drumming home this very point. He tends to find a friend either in person or over the phone, and they discuss the topic. If the friend doesn't respond well, Gladwell knows the idea either needs tuning or needs to be dropped entirely. If the person gets interested or goes off on their version of the story, Gladwell knows the premise is interesting. It struck me that this method is what most writers tend to do instinctively, yet the ones that struggle don't do it at all, and it puts them at a significant disadvantage. If you keep your article under wraps, it's your own secret This secretive nature of ours tends to boil down to one aspect—and it's called insecurity. Sounds harsh, I know, but it's just because we're insecure about our topic, or that we'll be called out in some way. Feedback rocks our boat so much that we feel happier to simply get on with the job of writing, and avoid this discussion bit completely. It's sobering to note that discussion and exposing your ideas to the world is how great science is done. Scientists don't tend to work in a bubble They postulate an idea, or do some research and publish a paper. That paper is examined by others in their field, and they come up with holes in the research or idea. The holes might be so large that the scientist has to go back to almost the starting point if they want to ratify their idea. Is this method frustrating? Is it a big blow to the ego? Of course. It is Renuka is not the only source of feedback and discussion. I'll get on WhatsApp and chatter away with a private group. I'll have discussions via e-mail or Messenger. And often, I'll post a rough idea on the forum in 5000bc. If you're wondering why there are so few holes in a lot of the articles or books from Psychotactics, then wonder no more. Those holes existed. If you look at the courses, e.g. the Sales Page course, it's in Version 3.0. That tells you that the course material of 1.0 and 2.0 had holes. The same applies to the Article Writing Course, or any course, any article—just about everything we do. This article too will have holes in it, and we know this to be true, because the moment I post it, someone will ask further questions or have clarifications needed. Or, as the case may be, they may disagree with some point or the other. But feedback is about holes and the discussion is often just for the sake of clarity When you have an idea or a topic you want to cover, it's a bit premature in your head. When you put it down on paper, on chat, or in a verbal discussion, you have to be more precise in your argument. It forces you to think of analogies. You might say: “You know this topic we're discussing is exactly like the Barbie case study. Remember how…” And that discussion will spur case studies and examples, but it does a lot more. When explaining something to someone else, you also tend to bring up analogies. You say, “It's a lot like a roundabout, instead of a traffic light. Both systems regulate the traffic, but one works without any punishment or and yet is far superior in traffic control.” When you explain yourself, you can't help but try and pull up a series of analogies. The discussion becomes the groundwork for all the analogies, stories, case studies and examples you could insert into your still to be written article. Whether you choose a forum, chat, the phone or a walk in Kyoto the result is similar You're going for a little stroll with your ideas. And along the way, you meet other ideas or even run into that snarly feedback guy from next door. You haven't started to write yet, but you're beginning to percolate, which is far more important. It might be a good idea at this point to reach into your pocket and scribble the ideas down. I tend to dictate them into my phone into Evernote so I can access the ideas on any computer or device, later. You may think you'll remember it all. I promise you it's not a good idea. For one, even if you have a great memory, you have to use energy to remember those points. In doing so, your discussion won't move as quickly as it possibly should. I tend to quickly save whatever I can remember and then continue the discussion even as I'm marching up or down the hill. If you can, it's a good idea to have many articles going at once When I first started writing, I was so pathetic that I could only focus on a single article. I'd spend days over that article, and that was my sole obsession. In time I realised it was better to have many articles all at different levels of progress. You see what's happening, right? It feels chaotic to have many articles all on the go at once, but in fact, they're all percolating over the duration of a week or so. The one that started last Monday might be completed by the following week, or earlier. Or later. But the discussion and the feedback move it backwards and forward. When starting out, it might take all your energy just to focus on a single article, but in time you'll find having many articles inching ahead to be a great way to get discussions going on many fronts. Keeping secrets is mostly a terrible plan in almost all areas of life We get bad advice from well-wishers, parents and guardians. We're told as we're growing up that certain things need to be private. In reality, it's hogwash. In many cases, secrets only seek to make us more insecure. And this kind of “let's keep it private, let's keep it a secret” usually makes work worse, not better. Scientists prove this point, coders prove this point, and great creativity underlines this idea over and over again. If you really want to get your article moving faster, and want it to be more robust, you have to overwrite the nonsensical programming you had in your formative years. Discussion and feedback help you formulate, tear down and rebuild ideas at high speed. It's input Input shows up when you read about your industry's subject matter. It creates a sweet, creamy layer of creativity when you cross-pollinate with different case studies, industries and even different media. And finally, input pushes your ideas to the wall. Your job is to make your work clearer, more robust. The more you accept feedback and discussion as part of your routine, the more volatile the process will seem at first. In time, however, you'll seek out discussion and feedback at every turn, and overwrite the “keep secret” programming that slows you down and keeps you isolated in your own dark, insecure corner. So far We've tackled two main topics of—Why Lack of Pre-Work Almost Guarantees Writer's Block 1) The Lack of Pre-Work 2)The Scarcity of Input It's time to go to the third one: Understanding Energy Management When Writing Next Step: Writer’s Block Series 4/4: How a Lack of Energy, Not Time, Causes Writers to Stall and Crash

What you’re doing today, you’ll probably do tomorrow. If you want tomorrow to be better, make the rituals of today compatible with how you want tomorrow to look. The concept of positive energy rituals (rather than time management) has changed the way Dan Danford and Richard Salmen live their lives and help their clients succeed. It’s a concept from the book “The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal.” Listen to Dan and Richard’s personal insights about this book and others that drive their lives. Then use their thoughts – and yours – as fuel to keep learning, to laugh a little, and to establish your own universal principles of optimism. This may be the episode to nudge you out of what Dan calls “the pinball machine principle” and into the freedom, creativity, focus and energy you want.

Today we are talking about Time vs. Energy. I don’t know if you can claim with full confidence that you have plenty of time but I have yet to hear that said or see it written anywhere. We’re all wanting more time and we never seem to get it but I’m going to propose we’re looking for the wrong thing. Rather than time, which is largely out of your control – how many of us have wished for an extra hour or two in the day? It never happens, does it? If you’re like me trying to control time, you take things off your schedule only to find other things have filled the gap and you still don’t have any extra time, you’ve only got a new routine. Rather than wishing for more time, enough time, I propose you seek to have more energy. The coaching process I use with my clients is called the Core Energy Coaching process. At its very root is the science that we are all made of energy and that our beliefs, thoughts, feelings and actions have an energetic signature that either depletes or restores us. All day long we are thinking thoughts that either gives us energy or we are thinking thoughts that take our energy away. This phenomenon was written about in the book, The Power of Full Engagement, by Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz. The subtitle of this book is “Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal.” How many times have you carved out time to work on a project only to find when that open time came that you were too cranky, tired, hungry or restless to focus on the task and get it done? The reason you couldn’t focus is your energy was tapped out. You needed to do something to restore your energy before you could use any on your project. These are the times you find yourself reaching for your phone or going on the computer to check facebook or watch Youtube videos. One of my favorites is of a baby panda bear sneezing. It’s hilarious. We instinctively do this because we want to find something that will calm us down, let us check out for a while or find a good laugh. These strategies work in the short-term but they are not the best source of energy so you end up spending precious time trying to gain a small amount of energy to make it to the end of the day. The key is to keep your energy high so when the time presents itself to get something done, you are all-in and ready to go. Rather than constantly responding reactively to lost energy try adding in some activities that will proactively renew your energy and/or prevent your energy from getting stolen. Here is a list of things that proactively renew your energy and obviously their opposites are the energy stealers. I’ve broken them down into categories but let me be clear, they all overlap. Physical energy: sleep, good nutrition, exercise or activity, stretching, conscious breathing, and good hydration. Mental energy: keep life simple; minimize decision-making and make decisions in a timely manner. Read books, watch videos and have conversations that stimulate your mind (TED talks are great for this), and actively seek to communicate clearly to prevent confusion and ask that those around you do the same. Emotional and spiritual energy: activities that bring you joy, spending time with happy, positive people, spending time with animals and being out in nature, being of service and taking time for reflection. Would you add anything to this list? Go to the post that accompanies this episode and leave a comment letting us know what you do to restore your energy and keep it high. I hope this was helpful and helps you to have a more energetic week ahead. Thank you all for being a part of this journey and here’s to your success. https://womentakingthelead.com/enough-time/

Meet this week awesome studentpreneur: Anthony Lam, 26 years old, Commerce and Law student at Monash University and entrepreneur with Punchy Digital Media in Melbourne, Australia.  Time for a quick wrap up each studentpreneur's story is different and what works for some people doesn't for others, however I'd like to point out of few things in Anthony's journey that are similar to a lot of studentpreneurs I have interviewed for my research: He implemented a lot of different ideas to find one that worked. Reading or listening to audio books on self development topics is something key to help change the mindset to accept that entrepreneurship is a viable option. Finally the successful student entrepreneurs I interviewed value highly the support mentors and Anthony even goes beyond by hiring mentors. You don't have to start there but you can find free mentors by going to your local meetup and build meaningful relationship.   Visit Anthony's charity website on mental illness: http://www.jmfoundation.org.au/ and stay tune for his event on the 31/10/15 in Melbourne. Books recommended by Anthony: Robert B. Cialdini: Influence Jim Loehr: The Power of Full Engagement: Managing Energy, Not Time, Is the Key to High Performance and Personal Renewal Steven Pressfield: The War of Art: Break Through the Blocks and Win Your Inner Creative Battles John Warrillow : Built to Sell: Creating a Business That Can Thrive Without You and anything by Tony Robbins;) You can reach out to Anthony on his email: anthony@punchydigitalmedia.com.au   To become a guest apply at http://studentpreneur.com.au/

Today's Guest is John Giganti of 'The Catalyst Project.' "I'm a catalyst - a storyteller that helps facilitate the growth in others. Through writing, speaking, coaching and training, my mission is to help you jumpstart your work, ignite your life and leave your ultimate legacy... The Mission of The Catalyst Project is simple – We want to plant seeds and watch them grow.  There’s no greater measure of success than facilitating the growth of others.  I’m here to tell you that no matter your situation or circumstances, you can make a difference.  All it takes is a change in mindset and the willingness to give of yourself.  I challenge you to stop playing small.  It’s time to make your impact on the world." Key Takeaways Focus on adding value to the other person. When you do this, in turn, you may receive something for yourself that was not expected. Value your time. Value every second you have and use it to make a difference and reach out to others. Manage your priorities. Energy, Focus, and Stress, are some key concepts to manage and be aware of while pursuing your business. If you regulate these aspects of your life, you will be able to be more productive and save a lot of time and energy. Work on managing your energy, not your time. This will help you immensely as you are reaching out to others and taking on many different tasks. Make sure to leverage the relationships that you have already built. Value these relationships and continue to invest in them.
