PhE is headed to Cancun this February 23 to March 2 for our Health and Wealth Summit! We'd love to have you join: https://www.physempowerment.ca/cancun—In this episode, Dr. Wing Lim introduces a discussion with Diana Choi, team lead to a group of portfolio managers, about professional investment strategies. Diana Choi explains her investment philosophy; looking at the unpredictability of the future and the importance of focusing on quality businesses. She tells Wing that successful companies are ones that can perform well in various market conditions, thriving in good times and surviving in downturns. Through this approach, refined over 25 years, risk-adjusted returns can be delivered by identifying strong businesses that are resilient to market fluctuations.Dr. Lim and Diana Choi also explore the idea that investment decisions should not hinge on short-term events or political cycles, such as presidential elections. Quality companies transcend political changes and Diana points to the example of CCL Industries, a label-making firm with strong cash flow and growth potential. This strategy makes robust fundamentals a priority and not trends, fads, or short-term gains. The conversation highlights the disciplined effort that is needed to assess and maintain investments, with a focus on the value of patience, diligence, and durable business models.Physician Empowerment: Attend an upcoming Empowerment RetreatJoin the Physician Empowerment Masterclass nowWebsite: PhysEmpowerment.ca

We'd love to have you join: https://www.physempowerment.ca/cancun—Dr. Kevin Mailo and Dr. Wing Lim welcome Masterclass faculty member Jason Pisesky back to the show to talk about the recent capital gains changes in Canadian tax policy. Jason is a tax expert with KPMG and he breaks down for Wing why the changes sparked widespread concern among professionals, small business owners, and investors. He and Wing examine the actual impacts, where they were felt most, and what the practical implications of the changes are.The conversation focuses on the government's decision to increase the capital gains inclusion rate from 50% to two-thirds for amounts exceeding $250,000 annually, meant only to affect the top 0.13% of Canadians.  Jason explains that the policy affects those with significant investments, corporations, and trusts, while individuals have some exemptions. The nine-week notice period left people rushing for solutions, leading to a variety of overreactions, like liquidating assets too early, and responses such as corporate stripping. Jason advises caution against unnecessary asset liquidations that could trigger large, immediate tax bills. Despite the initial panic, Jason reassures listeners that the tax increases are manageable for most with proper planning, emphasizing the importance of consulting experts to avoid unnecessary financial losses.About Jason Pisesky:Jason is a tax lawyer with an international accounting firm, KPMG. His practice background is extensive and includes personal and corporate tax planning as well as litigation and dispute resolution. You get to choose how you want to work through a particular situation or emotion. You become the master and learn that every emotional state you have is okay.  Wealth building begins with a rewiring of the relationship with money and making decisions from a state of desire not a state of need. In this state, material possessions no longer validate you. As you cultivate limitless thoughts and beliefs, remember that more is always coming. Forget the timeline, remove how and when from your vocabulary and shift your mindset into a state of receiving and abundance.  RESOURCE LINKS Flip My Money Switch - Quantum Abundance Activation Vibrant Life Workshop - To get Maraya's streamlined roadmap to more energy, upleveled hormones and to feel turned on by your life, your lover and yourself, register for the next free Vibrant Life Workshop. Most of us believe that "hard" equates to success and "hard" equates to wealth. We've been told that money doesn't grow on trees for most of our childhood. With limiting conditionings implanted in us, attorney and Wealth Expert Shamina Taylor teaches that a mindset shift must first be made to achieve our desires and dreams. A belief system that wealth is limitless and success knows no bounds.  Tune in to this new episode of the Conscious Marketer podcast — Activate Your Wealth Consciousness with Shamina Taylor. Key points covered in this episode:  [00:08:54] MORE is always coming. And if you can believe that more is always coming, then you've expanded what's right in front of you.  [00:16:58] Conviction means believing in what you're doing, like believing that you can actually help somebody else in your work.   [00:20:07] Not every person that comes to you is an ideal client. But when the right ones arrive, you're going to make magic with them.  [00:21:18] Shamina Taylor shares, "As I was changing, my avatar was changing." The truth is you can't help and save everybody. If you grow and evolve, you have to lead yourself in that dynamic.  [00:29:11] Don't believe everything you're thinking. When the fear comes up, take action and sooner or later, you will figure things out. If you listen to the negative voice in your head, you will surely feel you couldn't and you wouldn't.  [00:29:28] Nobody is judging you out there except yourself. The more you listen to and believe — you create a muscle of trust within yourself. When blocks and emotions show up, learn to get out of your own way.  [00:32:21] People don't realize the amount of grit, hard work, persistence, and stick-with-it-ness required every day. You can counter fears and perceived limitations in your mind by deciding to take massive action. Only you can steer your thoughts and make quantum leaps. ————————————————————————————— With over 20 years of experience, Shamina Taylor is a top industry leader and has helped hundreds of women build their businesses, both on- and off-line. Are you suffering from chronic pain and have already tried a lot of different treatments but still no results? Your pain may have an emotional root. Learn more about an alternative way of treating chronic pain as I interviewed Kent Bassett, one of the directors of the documentary film This Might Hurt, and Dr. Howard Schubiner. We talk about their film that addresses the fact that sometimes pain can have emotional causes and how you can take the steps to heal and eliminate pain. “There's no such thing as negative emotions. Emotions are there to help, protect, and alert us.” - Dr. Howard Schubiner “Roughly 30 - 40% of people who come to see a doctor do not have a structural problem for which their symptoms are attributable to. The vast majority of people with chronic pain do not have a structural injury.” - Dr. Howard Schubiner “Pain in a way is a fascinating window into the mind-body process that we all deal with all the time that has so much richness and texture that we're often not aware of.” - Kent Bassett What You Will Learn From This Episode The relationship between emotional trauma and chronic pain How we can deal with pent-up emotions (like anger) to help mitigate physical pain How the majority of people who have chronic pain do not have a structural problem/injury 2 factors that drive pain to become worse or chronic Why traditional doctors/medicine are hesitant to use this kind of treatment How this treatment is proven to be effective The 4 steps to healing chronic pain using the mind-body connection Is relapse possible once a person had been healed How we can find safety within our own bodies About Kent Bassett: Kent Bassett is an Emmy-nominated editor and director from Arizona. Much of the drive to make This Might Hurt came from his own struggle with pain as a 22-year-old. Unable to type or even turn a doorknob, he was forced to drop out of college. Although he saw several doctors and tried physical therapy, strength training, and was put on opioids—his pain grew steadily worse. It wasn't until he had an insight into the role of the brain in triggering real physical pain that he was able to completely recover. About Dr. Howard Schubiner: Dr. Howard Schubiner is the Director of Mind-Body Medicine Program at Ascension Providence Hospital and a Clinical Professor at Michigan State University. https://propertyplanning.com.au/propertyplannerbuyerprofessor/In this week's market update on the Property Planner, Buyer and Professor Podcast, the team analyse the factors playing out in Australia and abroad that are shaping our economic recovery and property market growth, as Dave, Cate and Pete take you through:1. All aboard as the last of the big banks revise their property forecast UP for 2021!ANZ is the last of the big 4 bank dominos to fall, and revise up their previous gloomy 2021 predictions for the property market. As we shared in April, we expected the market to fall by less than 5% and in early October we predicted 10% + growth in 2021, and more to come in 2022. Now the banks and other economists have adjusted their views.2. The peak to trough fall in values from Covid well within our predicted 5% bandThe impact of the Covid pandemic on property values from peak to trough was a modest decline of 1.7% for the entire Aussie property market and 2.8% for capital cities. CoreLogic data tells us that the Melbourne market bottomed on Oct 18 and the Aussie market a week earlier. In the Podcast we called the inflection point in late September due to data lag. Once again, many analysts have egg on their face, predicting cataclysmic price falls. Perhaps we need to have a Podcast on why macro- economic experts still do not understand the true drivers of the residential property market!3. The Melbourne property market has joined the party.Melbourne property values are surging with CoreLogic showing growth in values since mid to late October, auction clearance rates surpassed Sydney on the weekend and all signs point towards a larger recovery, because of the larger fall and Melbourne was on a tear leading into Covid. This has been playing out at the coal face since the start of October.4. The kiwi property market, a look into our future? The New Zealand government went hard and fast locking down to stamp out Covid. The effective eradication of the virus along with significant stimulus and with interest rates has resulted in median property values rising a whopping 11.1%! This trajectory means that the Reserve Bank of NZ is talking about macro prudential measures, such as restricting LVRs to slow down the property market already. We have predicted this kind of intervention will be on the cards for Australia towards the end of 2021 or into 2022 as APRA has proven it works.5. We explain some key reasons why we predicted property values would surgeFor starters, debt serviceability is the lowest it has been since 2001. Interest repayments as a share of total household incomes are the lowest they have been since March 2002. The Australian property market has provided zero net capital growth for about four years now. The unfortunate reality is that despite so many people having such a difficult time, many of them were young people in part-time and casual work and not on the property ladder. A larger cohort of people have the greatest level of savings on record and benefited from stimulus which they can now deploy in investments.6. The repeal of ASIC's Responsible Lending obligations is looking increasing likely! At the AFR Banking and Wealth Summit during the week, treasurer Josh Frydenberg ratcheted up the pressure on regulators to ensure they played their part, which acting ASIC chairwoman Karen Chester indicated she had heard loud and clear. The ASIC chairwoman painted the picture of a clear pivot of ASIC's position and it provided another sign that the Morrison government will ensure that the recovery is not hampered by lack of access to credit.7. Why property value increases will not be halted by the end of JobKeeper and loan repayment pausesThe trio explain the critical drivers that will continue to put upward pressure on values.8. Explain why the latest cash rate drop was not about reducing interest rates for borrowersWhile the low-rate environment is doing wonders for our debt=to-income ratio, it's not the primary reason why the RBA has been steadily lowering rates. The Property Planner, Buyer and Professor explain the real reason behind the rate cuts which are primarily about keeping our exchange rate lower and creating jobs which are more important than focusing, or worrying about excessive inflation.9. Banks forecasting an ever-improving positive outlook for GDP and unemploymentGovernment stimulus, our proven ability to suppress Covid, successful vaccines, the property market in full rebound mode and the expectation of record-breaking internal tourism all points to updated forecasts for superior GDP growth and reduction of unemployment in 2021, with one major back predicting unemployment to be as low as 5.75%.10. We touch on the big news in the NSW budget, with the plan to make stamp duty optionalWe take a high-level look at this potential transition from stamp duty to a yearly tax on property and our hosts provide some different perspectives on what this could mean, but it is only early days yet.11. Mark MaurerWhat You Need to Know About Late in Life Healthcare Expenses One out of three men will end up in a nursing home, and two out of three women will require long-term care.  So many people purchase health and life insurance, but why do more not prepare financially for the extended care they’ll need in their final years?  Mark Maurer, President and CEO of LLiS, joins the Wealth Summit to discuss how you can reduce the financial burden of long-term care. KEY POINTS-What is long-term care insurance?-How much does long-term care insurance cost?-Who should consider buying long-term care insurance? While health insurance doesn’t prevent you from getting sick, it does provide a funding mechanism to pay for the things designed to treat you and expedite your recovery.  Long-term care insurance acts in much the same way.  While medical insurance is designed to cover things that will get you better, long-term care pertains to a chronic illness—something that probably isn’t going to go away.  As Social Security begins to dry up, paying less and less to retirees, we’re seeing more multigenerational households.  However, eventually most elders reach the point of needing expert care beyond what relatives can provide.  Contrary to popular belief, Medicare only covers 100 days of long-term care.  Once that time period expires, Medicaid will be able to cover some expenses, but you most likely won’t be able to choose the specific facility.  Mark presents a chart at the 10:30 mark in the video detailing the varying expenses associated with long-term care.  A long-term care insurance policy typically covers $3,000 per month, and it can be used for differing levels of care.  Where that care is given depends on the significance of the condition.  As previously mentioned, 2/3 of women will require long-term care, along with 1/3 of men.  Insurance companies have recognized that women have a longer life expectancy so they’ve boosted the rates for female premiums.  Long-term care policies are not inexpensive.  Mark recommends people who own a house and have less than a half a million in assets steer clear of long-term care policies.  The premiums could wipe out your assets, drastically changing the retirement lifestyle you’ve been planning for years.  A good time to start considering the policy is in your mid-50s.  While perhaps not as popular as health insurance or life insurance, long-term care insurance can prove to be just as valuable.  Like most financial decisions, the choice to get a policy depends on your individual situation—health, financial status, location, family factors, etc.  While the premiums can be costly, if you have a large enough portfolio of relatively liquid assets, a long-term care insurance policy could ease stress and provide comfort down the road for both you and your loved ones.

Roth IRA's Rock! An Interview with Johanna Turner, CFP

Traditional IRA or Roth IRA? 401k or Roth 401k? With so many taxable retirement accounts out there, how do you know which one is best for you? Johanna Fox-Turner, a fee-only financial advisor with 35 years of experience, joins the Wealth Summit to tell us how valuable a Roth IRA can be to our retirement portfolio. KEY POINTS-Traditional vs. Roth IRA-How can I fund my Roth?-How to set up a Roth Depending on your income level, you might have the opportunity to deduct a traditional IRA on your tax form. However, the money does not grow tax-free, meaning when you take the money out all of the growth and income is taxable. A Roth IRA, on the other hand, grows tax-free throughout the entire lifespan of the account. Unlike the traditional IRA, you don’t get a deduction for contributing money to the account. Choose an account by deciding whether you want the tax break up front or later on in life. Many people say you should only fund a Roth if you’re in a low income tax bracket, but Johanna believes the extra bucket of tax-free income later in life is valuable to everyone. She also recommends placing more aggressive securities in the Roth account in order to take advantage of the higher returns over time. As retirees get older, they often get less interested in taking money out of their retirement accounts, electing instead to pass certain accounts on to the next generation. However, in a traditional IRA, you’re forced to take Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) at the age of 70 1/2, which include tax payments. Roth IRAs, in contrast, do not have RMDs, allowing the money to be passed on to your heirs. While the maximum individual contribution to a Roth is $5,500, you have the option to convert your traditional IRA into a Roth, which has no amount limitations. It is best to do these conversions in either a low income year or a bear market. The down economy will allow you to convert the money at bargain prices. Johanna suggests setting a Roth IRA up through a financial advisor, but it is pretty easy to set up on your own as well through an online custodian or broker. E-Trade, Fidelity, and Schwab all have solid funds, but ultimately Johanna advises picking the account with the lowest fees. Anyone can benefit from a Roth IRA, regardless of the tax bracket. If you want to contribute more than the limits allow, consider a conversion, which will also enable you to escape RMDs. Finally, start early. The more time your account has to take advantage of compound interest the more money you’ll have at your disposal during retirement.

What is a Reverse Mortgage aka Home Equity Conversion Mortgage—an interview with Don Graves

RetireWire Retirement Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 28, 2019 77:01

So just what is a reverse mortgage and how does a reverse mortgage work? Well, more technically referred to as a home equity conversion mortgage, Don Graves discusses what they are and how they work. The term “reverse mortgage” has been known to make retirees cringe at its mention, yet Don Graves, president and founder of HECM Institute for Housing Wealth Studies, says a reverse mortgage can serve as a valuable additional stream of income during the decumulation phase of life. If there were a proven resource that allowed you to increase cash flow, reduce your risk, preserve your assets, enhance your liquidity, and even add retirement dollars back into your savings account, wouldn’t you be interested? Don joins the Wealth Summit to show you how to utilize the reverse mortgage to accomplish these retirement objectives. KEY POINTS-What is a reverse mortgage?-How does a reverse mortgage work?-Home equity conversion mortgage synonym-Who can qualify? -How much money can you get?-How do you get the money? Widely known as a home equity conversion mortgage (HECM), a reverse mortgage is a federally insured home equity loan that allows those age 62 years or older to convert a portion of their mortgage to tax-free money. As the life expectancy of humans continues to increase, the initial 3 buckets of money—social security or pension income, investments, and insurances— aren’t lasting long enough to sustain the retired lifestyle many want and planned for. The reverse mortgage adds an extra asset retirees can draw money from to supplement their other 3 streams of wealth. To qualify for an HECM or reverse mortgage, you must be at least 62 years old and the house must be your primary residence. Additionally, you must take a financial assessment test to make sure you have good credit and enough money left over at the end of the month to cover property-related expenses. Once you get the loan, you must maintain the upkeep of the house, hazard insurance, and pay property-related taxes. The amount you receive depends on a triangle of factors: the age of the youngest borrower, the value of the property, and the interest rate. A typical 62 year old is eligible for about 50% of the value of the home, up to a home value of $636,150. This low interest rate environment we’re experiencing currently gives you more money with less interest, as opposed to a high interest rate environment which means more interest and less money. So if you’re considering taking the reverse mortgage route, now is the time. It’s important to receive the money in the manner that suits your situation the best. It can be distributed in a lump sum or through a line of credit. You can also get monthly tenure payments, which lend a certain amount of money every month as long as you live in the house, or you can elect to receive monthly term payments, which distribute a certain amount of money for a select period of time. Finally, you can choose a combination of the two monthly payment options. Unlike many common misconceptions, a reverse mortgage doesn’t mean you lose your home. The government doesn’t want your house—just repayment of the loaned money when the house is sold. The proceeds offered by the HECM’s line of credit give you an additional stream of money that will help you enjoy retirement the way you always planned.

From the Wealth Summit—September 2017—an interview with Dana Anspach regarding asset-liability matching for retirement income planning.Dana is an expert in asset-liability matching as a retirement income strategy. See more and a full transcript on www.RetireWire.comDana AnspachAsset-Liability Matching for Retirement Income PlanningIn an ideal world, we would all experience incredibly high investment returns while experiencing zero volatility and risk. However, the markets obviously do not operate in such a way, which is why Dana Anspach, CEO, and Founder of Sensible Money, LLC, joins the Wealth Summit to discuss an asset-liability matching strategy that can help prepare you for retirement.Key Points-The Perfect Investment-Accumulation vs. Decumulation-Asset-Liability Matching Compared to Other Retirement Income Planning Strategies-Other Retirement Income Strategies That May Make Sense-Time Segmentation ApproachThe perfect investment would accomplish the desired level of safety, income, and growth in a portfolio simultaneously, without having to sacrifice a portion of any category. This simply is not possible. The sooner you realize this, the better off you’ll be in retirement. However, Dana will discuss a few sufficient alternatives. The accumulation phase of your career follows the efficient frontier, which is the basis for how portfolios are structured. This frontier measures risk versus return. The more stocks you add to the portfolio, the more you increase your potential for both return and volatility. The typical portfolio will be structured to maximize growth while minimizing risk. One of the most important aspects of the decumulation phase is sequence risk, which depends on the time you withdraw your money from your portfolio. Dana’s graph stresses the importance of withdrawing money during an upturn in the market as opposed to during a downturn. How does asset-liability matching compare to other retirement strategies? The “total return” approach works well in bull markets but can be scary in down markets. This plan uses your typical 60/40 allocation model. The “income only” strategy focuses on high-yield dividend-paying hybrid investments. You only spend the divided. This plan experiences even more volatility during recessions than the “total return” strategy. The “guaranteed income” approach is for those who need as much income as possible and typically consists of buying annuities. Finally, the “asset-liability matching” approach matches investments to the point in time you’re going to need to use them.Dana describes the time segmentation of asset-liability matching as laying down a railroad track as you drive down it. Five percent should be kept in cash, while thirty-five percent is put into fixed-income bonds. This fixed income should be divided into chunks and staggered out to be paid overtime. The final sixty percent is in equities. As your equity portion experiences growth, the overflow of the equity bucket will pour into the fixed income bucket, adding an additional year or chunk of fixed income.“What got you here, won’t get you there.” Retirement requires a different portfolio situation. While you can’t control the outcome, you can manage the risks. The ideal time to start exploring this asset-liability matching strategy is 10 years prior to retirement.

His big break came when he was invited by a friend to apply as an area sales manager. He filled out the biodata right there and then. Too bad, he wasn’t accepted. But Arnold didn’t give up. . He texted the person who interviewed him everyday — for 14 straight days! He said, “Please give me a chance. You don’t have to pay me salary. Pangkain lang okay na.” That was how poor he was. . The person who interviewed him finally gave in. Arnold was tasked to sell textbooks to schools. He loved his job and did his best. From Sep to Dec that year, he made a total sales of Php500k. . His sales for one year reached as high as Php15M! . While Arnold was sharing his story, tears started rolling down the cheeks of the attendees. . For the first time in the history of Wealth Summit, everyone gave Arnold a Standing Ovation. After his talk, people lined up to have a picture with him and to get his autograph. . Today, Arnold Vargas is running his own publishing firm with 25 agents. His family happily lives in the beautiful house he built in Cavite. He has a farm in Vigan. Just recently, he married his long-time girlfriend Jap.  . .
