A Common Sense Media survey found the average age that most kids were exposed to porn is 12 years old. The author of the story we are investigating today was just three, and it was a relative who introduced her to what no child should ever see. Sexual abuse followed a couple of years later so it's no wonder that being trafficked into the adult entertainment world didn't seem very out of the ordinary.    Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. Our book this week is Scars and Stilettos by Harmony Grillo and our guest is Jeanne Roberson. We will check in with Jeanne after we investigate this compelling book.   I'm going to guess that when most of us think of sex trafficking, we imagine the victims are mostly women from foreign countries who are lured in by the promise of legitimate jobs that will help them escape grinding poverty. For Harmony Grillo, it started with a handsome young man her mother took in when his own home life grew too chaotic. Harmony was just 15 when Derrick moved into her house. It wasn't long before they were having sex which, since he didn't force her, to Harmony meant he cared about her.    When it became clear that he only wanted to freeload off Harmony's mom, she told him if he didn't get a job, he had to move out. Harmony was devastated. As poor as she was, she gave him what little money she had saved from her summer job. She knew he needed her. Weeks later he told her he was thinking about joining the army as a way to support himself. She was terrified and told him she'd get a job and they'd get an apartment. There was no mention of him getting a job.    Life was tough for Harmony for years. Ten signed up for a ballet class. That's where she met and became friends with Tanya. They chatted before, after, and sometimes during class. Inevitably, Tanya asked what Harmony did for a living, and Harmony answered honestly. It didn't seem to phase Tanya, which impressed Harmony.   You see, she'd learned that Tanya was a Christian, and of course feared being judged and rejected if Tanya knew about the life she was living. In what was, to me, the most poignant and heartbreaking quote in the entire book was when Harmony said about Tanya, “Through her eyes, I began to see myself differently.” Did you know that we have that kind of power too? We have the power to help someone make the move from an unsafe life to a safer one just by treating them like they matter. Because they do. Today's guest, author, speaker and trafficking survivor Jeanne Roberson has a lot in common with Harmony, so let's get to my chat with her. Psalm 82:2-4 NIV   “How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked?  Defend the weak and the fatherless; uphold the cause of the poor and the oppressed.  Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.”   God never fails in His compassion for those in need. In this Psalm, He is calling out those abusing the official power they had. But all of us have unofficial power if you think about power as the ability to influence someone. I think the same principle applies then to any of us. Who do you know that needs to hear that they are seen, that what they are going through isn't right and that they deserve better? And if that person is you, then let me speak over you that if you are being taken advantage of, God has so much more for you. I hope you'll seek out a loving church family to help you. If you don't know how to find one, send me an email and I'll do what I can to help connect you to one.   Let me know what you think of this episode! What's new in Visual Studio 2022? Carl and Richard talk to Simon Calvert, Anthony Cangialosi, and Andy Sterland about the upcoming version of Studio. First on the docket is 64-bit: While Studio has been able to build 64-bit applications for more than a decade, the devenv.exe itself has remained a 32-bit application. The team discusses why it makes sense to move to 64-bit and what that means for development going forward. But there's much more to Studio 2022, including improvement to debugging and diagnostics across platforms, being able to collaborate with developers in real-time using Live Share, and getting smarter about how you navigate and explore existing code. Cool new things are coming!

Jeff Kreeftmeijer works at Appsignal where they create a tool for application monitoring that works in Ruby and Elixir. He works specifically with integrations focusing in Elixir and also writes articles for their Elixir and Ruby newsletters. Jeff started as a Ruby programmer but had an interest in functional programming which lead him to gain an interest in Elixir. When he started at Appsignal they were already considering an Elixir integration and that made it a perfect fit.  Jeff then shares more details about his involvement in Appsignal’s two newsletters called Ruby magic and Elixir alchemy, both of which are aimed at more experienced programmers. He also details his experience with articles that he wrote on Live Share and how he came to write them. The panelists also introduce the Go game that is written about in these articles. The next topic covered by the Elixir experts is the Go game Live View implementation mentioned in Jeff’s articles. The panelists draw comparisons of how something similar could have been implemented in React. Jeff highlights that he doesn’t have to write JavaScript and doesn’t have to worry about state either. However, in part 1 of Jeff’s current implementation he used a struct to track the state. In part 2 of the implementation, where he implements the code rule, he has another struct that tracks the game.  The panelists then discuss how Jeff maintains the game state. In the first version of the implementation he keeps it in the Live View process and when he implemented multiplayer he had to move the game state to a GenServer. He also shares some of the details of why using a GenServer is necessary for multiplayer. Jeff is then asked what his experience was like using a dynamic supervisor and he shares the technical ideas of how this helped him in the project.  Next the conversation moves to how the game is able to communicate moves between players to each other. The issue with connecting two sessions to the same Live View is that one player won’t be updated if the other makes a move. Jeff details how using a Pub/Sub helps to overcome this issue. The panelists also discuss ideas of how the game could be implemented in a multi server instance.  Jeff shares how his article series still has many more installments that can come out, specifically citing that they haven’t even covered assigning player connections with different player callers. This kind of functionality would handle the assignment of which players controlled which pieces. Jeff closes with highlighting the convenience that comes from using the libraries that they are using as they natively come with technologies they find helpful for building out an interactive, collaborative project. Lastly, the panelists discuss what Jeff is currently doing to work more with these same technologies. Jeff shares that he has a side project where he tries to build a fish tank with artificial intelligence and how he uses Live View for this project.  Panelists Mark Ericksen Eric Oestrich Josh Adams Michael Ries   Guest Jeff Kreeftmeijer Sponsors Sentry.io | Use code “devchat” for two months free. Microsoft Visual Studio Code - https://code.visualstudio.com/Live Share Extension - https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=MS-vsliveshare.vsliveshare-packPatrick Chanezon - https://twitter.com/chanezonEpisode TranscriptionWelcome back to The Byte, just made it back from San Francisco, struggling with a little jet lag. I'm sure everyone understands this. In this episode, we're going to talk about Microsoft Visual Studio Live Share. Live Share is a code collaboration tool which allows us to invite people to Microsoft Visual Studio Code, to actually review our code, actually interact with the code. So we can actually see multiple different cursors moving, and we can invite people to our server, we can share our terminals. I mean we can really do a lot of information. We can do a lot of collaboration with this. Now typically people use screen sharing, or talk over the phone, or sending screenshots, and I find Visual Studio Live Share is actually much more collaborative. Because you can actually spawn a call within Live Share. So you can actually have a Skype call going, while you're doing Live Share, and you can actually do live debugging, you can do a collaboration, you can do actually code review. And I quite like it, personally, for doing training. Teaching people how to use something remotely. They can log in, they can see the link, they can actually interact with the code, they can see what I'm doing, how I'm executing things. So it brings a whole new use case to collaboration with editors. Now Live Share is just an extension within Microsoft Visual Studio Code. And you install it like any other extension, you go to extensions, search for Live Share, install it. And you have to connect it to some sort of authentication provider. So I connected mine to GitHub, it's owned by Microsoft anyway, so no problem. And from there, you can then collaborate with people. It installs an additional extension, and then at the bottom of the screen, you see your name usually, your GitHub name. And in here, you can invite others with a link, you can share terminals, you can share servers, and you can stop the collaborations sessions. And you see like little icon next to it, it's like a team icon. And you see how many people are actually viewing your code simultaneously. Now once you have it up and running, I mean it's quite cool, because you can invite somebody in. And they see your code, and you can see everyone's cursor, where everyone's working, you can see the debugging. And I find it quite helpful. I've used it a couple of times where people say, "Oh no, you know this docker composed file or whatever is not running." And we start up a session, I look at it, and like okay, walk me through exactly what you're doing, let me see. And you can identify right away what's going on. And you can actually interact with it, and jump in the terminal, and they see exactly what you're typing, etc. So it actually is a great learning tool. I find it's a great learning tool. Now some of the common use cases, which people say they're using Live Share for is often you see quick assistance. I'm having an error, can you help me? Office hours, I want to demo my project, how about like mob programming, like pair programming, coding competitions, hackathons, school group projects, developer streaming, then interactive education. And I find interactive education is probably the best use case for the Live Share because I see it as really a learning tool. And I'll give you an example, at DockerCon, Patrick Chanezon actually did his session with Live Share. And he invited someone from I to think the UK, and DockerCon was in San Francisco. He called them up with Skype and said, "Hey, we're going to do this really quick." They interacted with Live Share, they were doing actually Kubectl commands, via Live Share, sharing the terminal. And it was really amazing. I mean this is the first time I've seen it in a conference, someone actually doing collaborative editing with the editor. So it was really nice.Other use cases, code reviews, and technical interviews. Maybe someone wants to show you what they're working on and walk you through the code and how it works, which is also quite interesting. Then you can share it with multiple people, you don't have to be in the same room. Especially since we're getting into more of a remote type of context. More people are working remotely. This is really helpful to see the code and understand what their thought process is when they're looking at the code. Because someone just sends you a GitHub link, that's great. But when someone can walk you through the code, interactively, and highlight the different sections, this changes the whole aspect of how the code lives, an how it communicates different people. So I'm using it quite often and I'm going to use it more for my training sessions. I'm going to kick out some workshops, and I'm going to actually do everything through Microsoft Live Share. So people can actually interact, they can see exactly what's going on, then they can try it on their terminals to see what's going on as well. So it's learning by doing a type of thing, but it's very easy to identify exactly what I'm doing, what step I'm in, and it's clear. I actually find it a little bit easier than attending workshops, because you see the code, you see how I'm typing, you see how I'm interacting. The only limitation I find is you definitely need two screens. So you can work on one screen and view the other screen. Now I'm going to start using this more and more, I've used it a couple of times already. I see tons and tons of use cases for it. I highly encourage everyone to go check it out. I mean just go to Microsoft Visual Studio Code, install Live Share, connect it to GitHub. And then within the Live Share client, I mean right when you click your name, you can just copy the link, drop it into Slack, you can email it to anyone. And once this other person clicks this link, they connect to your session. It is that easy. And then you can do Skype calls, or you can do Hangouts, however, you want to talk. So you can have a call going while you're doing the live share.Give it a try, I mean it's very, very helpful. You can see a ton of use cases out of it. I mean to try it out, give me some feedback. Let me know what you think of it, like I said, in DockerCon they demoed it, they demoed part of the session using it. So I can see more and more use cases coming along. And I can see this type of collaborative workshops, code reviews, and just collaboration on projects generally should increase. So we're getting away from screen sharing, we're actually all using the same terminal, same code base, and view exactly what's going on at the same time like we're all sitting in the same room.Well, that's all for this episode, Microsoft Visual Studio Live Share, give it a try. Have a great day and we will see you next time.
