Guest: Jin Shin Founder, CEO & Mental Wellness Coach Jin Shin calling it to help prevent suicides. He had his first encounter suicide with suicide at 15. A friend of a friend was threatening suicide and the only person he would agree to talk to was Jin. They spoke on the phone for 45 minute and luckily the story had a happy out come. That person now has a masters degree and two children. Mental health is about being present. Two mindfulness techniques, reductive and additive, aid this. Reductive mindfulness uses meditation and yoga to refocus our attention. Additive mindfulness addresses lingering unease through reflection therapy and journaling. The Book Leads - Episode 73: Kimberlee Pita & Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert The magic of who we are. That's what this book and conversation cover. In Episode 73, Kim, a Mental Wellness Coach and Founder of the Love Your Mental Health LLC, reflects on both her career and mental health journeys. A tool pivotal in Kim's wellness work is mindfulness -- taking stock of both what's around us and within us. She found Big Magic by chance, but it made -- and left -- a deep impression on her. For her, the book put to words how different we all are, how different our circumstances are, and how much we tend to not realize what we're capable of in our lives. There is so much we can unlock from deep within ourselves. We spend most of our lives and career looking for it (the "magic") on the outside and in our environments. Those experiences help, yes. But they merely unlock what's always been there. There really is magic inside all of us. It's that uniqueness we can bring to the world, something that is only ours, a culmination and result of ALL the experiences we've collected along our journey. If you don't want to call it magic because it sounds hokey, call it whatever you want. A gift, that something special, your driver, your passion, your reason for being -- whatever resonates for you. But society stops us from letting it (whatever you decided to call it just now) get through. We conform to the script of life, mute ourselves because of the attitude of others, fear that paralyzes us, and hold back on and give up on ourselves. We're through before we even get started. Check out this book even if you're not a traditional creative -- the singer, the musician, the painter, the sculptor, the photographer, the writer. Everyone is capable of creating in one form or another. Find what's yours. CONVERSATION HIGHLIGHTS We were all given something. We all have a beautiful gift inside of us. Once we can find our authentic, true self, then we can truly deliver our magic. You honor yourself through self-care. What's good, High Performers! Greetings from the bustling streets of New York City. And if you caught my recent social media post, you know I'm sporting a Wu-Tang hat, and there's a story behind it. But first, remember as you scroll down to jump into our YT channel and hit that Subscribe button so we can add to the visual parts of your learning process. The Haircut Dilemma (2 mins): So, picture this: I'm about to meet my wife's family for the first time, and as you know, self-care, including that all-important haircut, plays a role in how we present ourselves. Unfortunately, my history with Manhattan barbers hasn't been stellar. But guess what? You can see the whole haircut saga on our YouTube channel. Now, let's dive into today's juicy topic. Recap of AI for Performance (1 min): In our last episode, Episode 142, we delved into the basics of AI and how it can supercharge your performance. We covered the fundamentals of creating prompts for AI, helping it understand your goals, and crafting a plan to boost not just your physical but mental well-being. If you missed it, go check it out. AI as a Mental Wellness Coach (2 mins): Today, we're zooming in on AI's role in mental wellness, starting with the foundation. Yes, AI can be your mental wellness coach, but remember, it's not a substitute for professional help if you truly need it. It's a valuable complement to your journey. Setting the Stage with Self-Awareness (2 mins): To harness AI effectively, you need a level of self-awareness and behavioral change skills. AI can provide knowledge, but you must take action. The abundance of information available today requires us to focus on behavioral change, and that's where AI steps in. Creating a Coaching Prompt (2 mins): I ran a prompt to AI asking how it could coach me on personal growth and mental well-being. It rightly emphasized it's not a replacement for professional medical advice, but it's still a powerful tool. What it asked for was crucial: your goals, challenges, daily routine, thoughts on therapy, and more. Understanding these aspects helps AI cater to you effectively. Introducing AI-Powered Tools (2 mins): Now, let's explore some exciting AI-powered tools that can complement your journey: Breathhh: This Chrome extension analyzes your web activity and provides exercises based on your needs. Perfect for those intense work sprints or battling the endless scrolling trap. MindDoc: Think of it as a mental wellness retreat in your pocket. With 70+ courses and exercises, it guides your mental wellness journey, offering personalized feedback. MindSara: The world's first AI-powered journal, it helps you uncover your thought processes, limiting beliefs, and conditioning. It's like having a thought-provoking conversation with yourself. A Complementary Journey (1 min): These tools don't replace therapists but can be excellent companions in your wellness journey. Whether you're not sure about therapy, can't afford it, or want to deepen your self-awareness, AI can help. Teaser for Part 3 (1 min): Next time, in Part 3, we're diving into AI for fitness, exploring products and strategies that can take your physical performance to the next level. Bipolar disorder is at its core a global issue: although the systems for managing the disease vary from country to country, it impacts more than 45 million people worldwide. With this, it is always enlightening to speak with individuals around the globe who have found strategies for effectively managing the disorder. Oliver Seligman, today's guest, is a prime example: mental wellness coach, advocate, meditation teacher, and author of Befriending Bipolar and The Broker Who Broke Free. Based in Edinburgh, Scotland, Oliver was diagnosed with bipolar type one at seventeen. Having spent time in mental hospitals in Norway, Australia and the U.K, he finally gave up the fight, learned to accept his illness, and turned his life and his relationship with bipolar around. Join host Nikhil Torsekar and Oliver Seligman as they explore numerous subjects, including: The meaning of the title “Befriending Bipolar:” how Oliver adopted the calm, accepting mindset of the Tai Chi master, versus the bloodied, aggressive professional boxer A deeper dive into aspects of bipolar disorder that Oliver experienced, including mania (euphoric and agitated), hypomania, depression The key practices that helped Oliver manage his bipolar disorder, including medication, meditation, An overview of time inside a mental hospital, how it differs from classic depictions in media (i.e., One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), and the variances in approach to mental health between the United States, Norway, Scotland, and India What constitutes a “good,” versus “bad” therapist The pivotal importance of relationships in effective management of bipolar disorder Oliver's journey with meditation, including The Bright Path Ishayas' Ascension The benefit of taking a light-hearted (versus excessively serious) approach to discussing mental illness Tactics for effectively managing bipolar disorder, including asking for help, finding purpose, and surrounding yourself with the right people Authors who have contributed to greater understanding of the disorder, including Kay Redfield Jameson and mutual connection Paris Prynkiewicz You can connect with Oliver on his YouTube channel, Instagram, LinkedIn, and his Website - befriendingbipolar.co.uk.
