UK inflation continued to ease in May, with the headline rate at 2.0% year-on-year, down from 2.3% in the 12 months to April, marking the lowest rate since July 2021. Core inflation was 3.5%, while services prices remained high at 5.7%. The largest downward pressure came from food prices, while motor fuels and transport costs drove inflation up. The Bank of England (“BOE”) held interest rates at 5.25%, emphasising the need for restrictive monetary policy to control inflation. Market expectations for an August rate cut increased to more than a 50% chance after the news, up from 30%. By year-end, 0.50% of rate cuts are now priced in. Economists are divided on whether the BOE will reduce rates in August or later, with some expecting a delayed cut followed by faster easing. Tight fiscal policy under a new government could lead to a more rapid easing cycle next year. The biggest risk to early BOE easing is a stronger economy with rising price pressures and wages. The BOE forecasts headline inflation to rise above target from the autumn and will use updated macroeconomic projections at its next meeting...Stocks featured:Games Workshop, Ocado Group and Phoenix Holdings GroupTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Last week saw the UK October inflation figures witness a significant drop, with the headline Consumer Price Index (“CPI”) standing at 4.6% year-on-year, below the consensus expectations of 4.8% and a substantial decrease fromthe prior month's 6.7%. Core inflation also moderated to 5.7% versus a consensus estimate of 5.8% and September's 6.1% reading. The breakdown from the Office for National Statistics (“ONS”) attributed this decline primarily to housing and household services, where the annual rate for CPI was at its lowest level since records began in 1950. The Bank of England (“BOE”) has also been closely monitoring service prices and noted a decrease to 6.6% from 6.9% last month. This, combined with softer labour market data, reinforces expectations that the BOE's rate cycle has peaked, with the possibility of an interest rate cut coming as early as next May. However, The Times reported that money markets have been pricing in rate cuts from as early as March after the slowdown in inflation. BOE policymakers continue to signal caution over rate cut bets, maintaining the narrative that rates will remain higher for longer....Stocks featured:Experian, Ocado Group and HalmaTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Last week saw the Bank of England (“BoE”) decide to keep interest rates steady at 5.25% for the second consecutive meeting, in line with expectations. The BoE's assessment notes that while there have been no significant changes in inflation since September, underlying inflation remains elevated, and the potential for secondary inflation effects to unwind is prolonged. The BoE also highlighted the risk of rising inflation due to Middle East events, despite the current mean projection for inflation to be at 2.2% in two years' time and 1.9% in three years' time. The gross domestic product growth forecast for the third quarter of 2023 is now expected to be flat, falling below previous estimates from August of 0.1% growth. The central bank also signalled a 50% chance of a recession by mid-2024. The BoE's forecasts are based on expectations of maintaining the 5.25% base rate until the third quarter 2024. Despite the BoE's recent hawkish stance, market sentiment remains slightly more dovish, with a 25% probability of one more interest rate rise by February 2024 and focus shifting to the timing of the first rate cut. The central bank may have to consider reducing the bank rate faster next year as the economy slows...Stocks featured:Ocado Group, BP and NextTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. FTSE 100 rallies on better-than-expected UK inflation figures for June

Inflation once again dominated the news in the UK last week as Office for National Statistics (“ONS”) figures showed headline inflation eased sharply in June to 7.9%. Core inflation also fell to 6.9% in June, versus consensus expectations of 7.1% and a prior reading of 7.1%. This is the lowest level of inflation since March 2022 with the ONS stating that falling motor fuel prices were one of the largest downward contributors, alongside no large offsetting upward contributions. The previous month's inflation figures surprised to the upside and caused the Bank of England (“BoE”) to raise interest rates by 0.5% against an expectation of 0.25%, which led to markets increasing their peak rate expectations to 6.5%. The market therefore reacted positively to the June inflation figures as investors began to unwind their expectations of continued aggressive rate hikes by the BoE. Markets now anticipate the base rate to peak below 6%, which caused the FTSE 100 to rise more than 3% last week. It should be noted that the June figures are still high, but they have reinforced market expectations that the BoE is nearing the pivot point in the battle against inflation...Stocks featured:Ocado Group, Wise and PersimmonTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. Here's a fact I bet you didn't know…women make up nearly half of the UK's workforce. More shocking is that according to Wellbeing of Women, over 900,000 have quit their jobs because of the menopause.    One aim of the Menopause Workplace Pledge is to tackle this outrageous issue head-on. Boundaries are being broken left, right and centre - not supporting womens' needs and ignoring the new way in which “work-life balance” has gotten confused and blurred.   My guest today is having a huge impact on the corporate sector when it comes to wellbeing at work. Highly experienced in the world of Management Consulting, Arti Kashyap-Aynsley has travelled the globe over, giving her insight into the impact of our working lives on our overall wellbeing.   As Global Head of Health & Wellbeing for the Ocado Group, Arti is also Transformational Life Coach, and an advisor, speaker and thought leader across all aspects of Wellbeing, Inclusion & Diversity agendas.    She decided after many years at high level corporate positions, to pivot into the world of wellbeing - to focus on the design, development and delivery of global wellbeing strategies, specifically for corporate environments.

In driving its “lead with fresh, accelerate with digital” strategy, The Kroger Co. — the Supermarket News 2022 Retailer of the Year — aims to build a seamless ecosystem in which customers can move easily between channels and get the same high-quality experience. That includes shifting between brick-and-mortar stores and digital, and among in-store shopping, pickup and delivery. “Our aspiration is to be the destination for our customers for their food needs,” Yael Cosset, senior vice president and chief information officer at Cincinnati-based Kroger, told SN in a podcast discussion. “At the heart of our vision for a seamless ecosystem is the precise understanding of our customers.” Unsurprisingly, technology is playing a central role. On the e-commerce side, Kroger has opened six customer fulfillment centers (CFCs) and nine supporting “spoke” facilities under its more than four-year-old partnership with Ocado Group. These high-tech facilities use Ocado’s automation and artificial intelligence technology to fill online grocery delivery orders, including in markets where Kroger doesn’t have physical stores. But that’s not all. Kroger, which serves more than 60 million households annually, is leveraging the vast stores of data from across its physical and virtual properties and brands to create more personalized experiences and value for customers. The company also is using tech-based solutions and its data and analytics capabilities, for example, to hone its supply chain to improve product freshness, expedite pickup and delivery service, and introduce new, on-trend items in its Our Brands portfolio. According to Cosset, Kroger is seizing “the opportunity to leverage data to really understand what matters to every single customer — what they want, from the freshest product for a simple meal they cook at home to a quality fresh meal solution when they’re on the go; when they want it, whether they’re doing their weekly shop or looking for an immediate solution delivered to them in 30 minutes; and also how they want it. Do they want to go to the store, pick it up or get it delivered to their home? All of this without having to compromise on the freshness, quality or value they get from Kroger.” Overall, The Kroger Co. operates 2,723 supermarkets and multi-department stores under more than 20 banners. More than 2,250 stores have pharmacies, and over 1,600 have fuel centers. Eighty-two percent of Kroger’s customers within five miles of one of its stores, with most living within two miles. On the digital side, as of the fiscal 2021 year-end, 2,257 stores provided online grocery pickup, and over 2,500 stores offered delivery. Including click-and-collect and delivery via Kroger Delivery, third-party partners such as Instacart and Kroger’s Ship direct-to-home service, the company covered 98% of households in its trade area with e-commerce services. Digital represents a more than $10 billion annual business for Kroger. About 18.5 million households engaged online with the retailer in 2021. “Our seamless ecosystem is about bringing all of our assets together — our stores, our dedicated facilities, leveraging technology, our partners, petabytes of data about customer preferences — ultimately to bring that seamless experience to life to fit the context of your day, your need,” Cosset said. “So data and technology is present across the entire ecosystem.”

A book that influenced me 12 years ago was The 4-Hour Workweek by Tim Ferriss who said you can “live anywhere” and “join the new rich”. He talked about persuading your boss to let you to work from home and then systemising everything enabling you to travel the world. It all sounded like a fantasy in 2007 but today millions of people are being offered the opportunity to work from home permanently, even if you live abroad. The Ocado Group has told office staff they can work remotely from anywhere in the world, which means you really can live the so-called laptop lifestyle! Silicon Valley giants have no plans to bring all staff back to their plush offices for the time being. Not everyone likes the idea of permanent home working, and many miss the social aspect of going to work. Governments and retailers are also missing the revenue from city office workers. To be fair, Tim Ferriss already had a physical business before he took off on his globetrotting adventures. Can you really work a few hours a week while leading a laptop lifestyle? Of course you can! There are hundreds of ways to make money online working from a laptop, tablet or smartphone from anywhere with a Wi-Fi connection. You can learn how to become financially free, quit the rat race (if that's what you want) and live life on your terms.
