The daily death rate in India from coronavirus is still on a rise. Health workers on the front lines against this disease are disproportionately affected. In a report titled, ‘Occupational Hazards in Healthcare Settings, A Study of Invisibilised Frontline Workers in Bengaluru', Dr Sylvia Karpagam writes that on one end of Indian healthcare system are highly paid male doctors mostly from dominant caste groups, while on the other end are exploited workers, mostly dalit, relegated to sanitation and waste disposal. Advocate Maitreyi Krishnan has also been investigating how workers at the lower rungs of the healthcare system are disproportionately affected by the pandemic. She represents All India Central Council of Trade Unions and examines labour law violations. Advocate Maitreyi and Dr Sylvia take a broad view of frontline warriors engaged in health and sanitation work including crematorium workers, Asha workers, garbage collectors and cleaning staff within hospitals. In this episode, our reporter Suryatapa Mukherjee speaks to both of them about the experiences of these workers in this pandemic. See sunoindia.in/privacy-policy for privacy information.

Dr Elisabeth Poorman MD joins us to discuss the natural history of physician depression in residency and beyond. We share some of our own personal stories, and discuss how we can support one another and reach out for help, how to take care of our mental health in an emotionally demanding career, how to deal with licensing questions and worry about stigma, and what systemic changes may be coming (read: we think need to be coming) down the line. The problem of depression and suicide is a particularly real one in medicine, a profession that is, by its very nature traumatic and emotionally draining (both in terms of work demands and also the sick and dying patients we treat). In this podcast, Dr. Elanah Uretsky discusses her recent book, Occupational Hazards: Sex, Business, and HIV in Post-Mao China, with National Committee Program Officer Maura Cunningham. The book follows a group of Chinese businessmen and government officials as they conduct business in Beijing and western Yunnan Province, uncovering informal networks that result in political favors for the businessmen. The networks are built on liquor, cigarettes, food, and sex; risky behaviors turn into occupational hazards. Occupational Hazards follows men both powerful and vulnerable - to China's growing epidemics of sexually transmitted infections including HIV/AIDS. Examining the relationships between elite masculine networking practices and vulnerability to HIV infection, the book includes the stories of numerous government officials and businessmen who visit commercial sex workers but avoid HIV testing for fear of threatening their economic and political status. Their lives are complicated by a political system that does not publicly acknowledge the risks and by international approaches to disease control that limit the reach of public health interventions. Dr. Uretsky offers insights into how complex socio-cultural and politico-economic negotiations affect the development of and approaches to China's HIV epidemic. Dr. Uretsky discussed her research with the National Committee on March 15, 2016 in New York City. She is a medical anthropologist in the departments of global health, anthropology, and the Elliott School of International Affairs at George Washington University.

What makes military occupations more or less likely to succeed? Drawing on 26 cases since 1815 where outside powers have seized territory without a claim to its sovereignty, David Edelstein attempts to determine why some occupations succeed and why so many seem doomed to failure.Edelstein combines detailed case studies with a theoretical approach and concludes that occupations face a paradox: Success requires a long-term and massive commitment of resources and attention; however, such large-scale occupations can elicit nationalist responses from the occupied populace. Further, as the occupier faces difficulty, discontent grows at home, and pressure builds to remove occupying forces. Examining the history of occupation as a component of grand strategy, Edelstein offers warnings for today’s policymakers, who seem tempted to include military occupations as part of the approach to countering terrorism. Please join the author and our distinguished commentators for a discussion of this timely and pathbreaking book.
