Dankjewel! Preferably fiction and/or fun/uplifting Meet Cute: Some People Are Destined to Meet; Tales from the Inner City by Shaun Tan; Take the Mic edited by Bethany C. Morrow; Snow in Love; Hope Nation edited by Rose Brock; The Radical Element edited by Jessica Spotswood. A gift for my brother who isn’t a big reader. He’s in college, loves soccer and video games, and hasn’t enjoyed a book since reading Holes in middle school. Don’t Read the Comments by Eric Smith; Slay by Brittany Morris; The Pros of Cons by Alison Cherry; Booked by Kwame Alexander; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; Warcross by Marie Lu; Feed by MT Anderson. New, contemporary, socially conscious, diverse. Yes No Maybe So by Aisha Saeed and Becky Albertalli; The Voting Booth by Brandy Colbert; Punching the Air by Ibi Zoboi and Yusuf Salaam; Running by Natalia Sylvester; We Didn’t Ask For This by Adi Alsaid; Dear Justyce by Nic Stone. Diverse body positive books. What I Like About Me by Jenna Guillaume; Melt My Heart by Bethany Rutter; My Eyes Are Up Here by Laura Zimmermann; Gabi, a Girl in Pieces by Isabel Quintero; If It Makes You Happy by Claire Kann; Body Talk: 37 Voices Explore Our Radical Anatomy edited by Kelly Jensen. YA dealing with survivors of sexual abuse/pedophilia/other childhood trauma: some of my favorites that I’ve read are Sadie, Girl in Pieces, Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls, Perks of Being a Wallflower and Speak. Grown by Tiffany D. Jackson; Blood Water Paint by Joy McCullough; The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith; Charm & Strange by Stephanie Kuehn; How Dare the Sun Rise by Sandra Uwiringyimana; Wrecked by Maria Padian; Infandous by Elana K. Arnold; In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. A YA book to get my friend who doesn’t really read….p.s. she really likes Disney. Disney’s Twisted Tales; Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige; Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo; Under a Painted Sky by Stacey Lee. One of my high school students likes mysteries and fantasy novels, but doesn’t like any “kissing” (i.e. lots of romance or a focus on a relationship). What suggestions could I give her? Goldie Vance: The Hotel Whodunit by Lilliam Rivera; Endangered by Lamar Giles; Jennifer Lynn Barnes; Karen M. McManus; Complicit by Stephanie Kuehn. A book for my 16 year old nephew who is a very particular reader. Used to love Rick Riordan but has moved on. Beyond Riordan, the only books I’ve sent him that he has actually called begging for the sequels is Scythe. He likes Agatha Christie “because it makes him think” (to figure out what is going on). I’ve tried AS King and Going Bovine, but have not gotten a reaction and all the fantasy tried and trues. Would love an idea from you! Bitterblue by Kristin Cashore; The Future will be BS-free by Will McIntosh; The Lines We Cross by Randa Abdel-Fattah; Warcross and Legend by Marie Lu. A contemporary with some magic and some romance, but the story does not center grief. Now and When by Sara Bennett Wealer; Displacement by Kiku Hughes; Lobizona by Romina Garber. I am looking for a fantasy novel with romance that ideally is part of an almost finished or finished series. I have already read many of the popular ones, so I guess I am looking for those that were a bit more under the radar. I have read/started the Folk of the Air Series, A Court of Thorns and Roses Series, Red Queen Series, all of Cassandra Clare, etc. and loved them all! Looking for something in that realm. Blythewood by Carol Goodman; Lost Voices by Sarah Porter; The Madman’s Daughter by Megan Shepherd; Brooklyn Brujas by Zoraida Cordova. Warm fuzzy story about family (chosen, biological, adopted, whatever) with winter holiday(s) (not necessarily Christmas, but Christmas ok) as a backdrop and a happy ending. Something wintery and hopeful. (At least something that leaves the reader with some hope.) I like a variety of things. Some writers whose work I’ve enjoyed: Katie Henry, Karen McManus, Tomi Adeyemi, Jenny Han, Nina LaCour, and too many names to list. A few books I’ve read and enjoyed because of this podcast: Agnes at the End of the World, We Are the Perfect Girl, and Orpheus Girl. 10 Blind Dates by Ashley Elston; The Kid Table by Andrea Seigel; The Chaos of Standing Still by Jessica Brody. A feminist book like Rules for Being a Girl. Girls Like Us by Randi Pink; The Degenerates by J. Albert Mann; Burn Baby Burn by Meg Medina; Watch Us Rise by Renee Watson and Ellen Hagan. Books for a 13 year-old. She loves the Shadowhunter Chronicles by Cassandra Clare and anything written by Rick Riordan. Recently, I loaned her my copy of With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo (one of my favorite YA authors ever) and she loved it. I’d really like to give her books in a genre she loves and one that will expand her reading material. Finding Yvonne by Brandy Colbert; New Kid/Class Act by Jerry Craft; Inventing Victoria by Tonya Bolden; Akata Witch/Akata Warrior by Nnedi Okorafor. Something that will make me laugh, but also teach me something. The Go-Between by Veronica Chambers; Cherry by Lindsey Rosin; Unpregnant by Jenni Hendriks and Ted Caplan; We Are The Perfect Girl by Ariel Kaplan. I’m looking for at book for my niece (18 years old). She is not an avid reader out side required reading in school. She’s not that into fantasy and Sci fi, she likes contemporary fiction better. She might like a short story collection because 40 pages is not as daunting as 350 pages (or more if it’s a series) for a story. Books she had liked recently: They Both Die at the End by Adam Silvera and Broken Things by Lauren Oliver. Try Margarita Engle, Nikki Grimes, Stephanie Hemphill, Kwame Alexander as an alternative to short stories but still with a lot of white space, as it may be less intimidating; Toil and Trouble edited by Jessica Spotswood and Tess Sharpe; Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. I’m interested in spooky tales, thrillers, science fiction, and non-WWII fiction. No dystopias or urban fantasy, please! The most important thing to me as an aromantic asexual person is that’s there’s no significant romantic element. I don’t want the main character to have any romantic partners or to spend several pages daydreaming about their crush(es). Thanks! Pan’s Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke; Dread Nation by Justina Ireland; Dreamland Burning by Jennifer Latham; The Blood Confession by Alisa M. Libby; The Girl From The Well by Rin Chupecho; Jackaby by William Ritter; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour. A book for my 19 year old sister who loves Wilder Girls and The Poet X. She is a fan of feminism, horror, and queerness in books. The Cure for Dreaming by Cat Winters; Mary’s Monster by Lita Judge; The Good Luck Girls by Charlotte Nicole Davis; Furia by Yamile Saied Mendez; We Are The Wildcats by Siobhan Vivian; The Stars and the Blackness Between Them by Junauda Petrus. A book for my daughter. She recently told me that she is gay. I want to show her how much I love her and accept her. She loves graphic novels and has read many of the most popular ones featuring same sex relationships. Everything Noelle Stevenson! Lumberjanes, Nimona, The Fire Never Goes Out; Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John Barker and Julia Scheele; Skim by Mariko Tamaki; Mooncakes by Suzanne Walker and Wendy Xu; Kiss Number 8 by Colleen AF Venable and Ellen T. Crenshaw; Moonstruck by Grace Ellis and Shae Bragl. Something heavily folklore-based (Maggie Stiefvater or higher level of “heavily”) and LGBTQ+ please? European and Asian folklore are my favorite but I’ll be happy to dive into any other as well. Anna-Marie McLemore; A Thousand Beginnings and Endings edited by Elsie Chapman and Ellen Oh; Wicked As You Wish by Rin Chupeco; A Curse of Roses by Diana Pinguicha; Forest of a Thousand Lanterns by Julie C. Dao; Girl, Serpent, Thorn by Melissa Bashardost. A fantasy or science fiction novel, preferably action-packed. Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger; The Marrow Thieves by Cherie Dimaline; Cut Off by Adrianne Finley; Orleans by Sherri L. Smith. An awesome ghost story. The Girl from the Well by Rin Chupeco; Wait Till Helen Comes by Mary Downing Hahn; Horrid by Katrina Leno; The Tenth Girl by Sara Faring; Watch Over Me by Nina LaCour; Thirteen Doorways, Wolves Behind Them All by Laura Ruby; Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas. School for Good & Evil read-alikes for 14-year-old reluctant reader. Thanks! On today's episode our student panel of Abi, Angelina, Sean, Tove, and Elise are joined by Stacey Lee, author of such fabulous young adult fiction titles as Under a Painted Sky, Outrun the Moon, The Downstairs Girl, and The Secret of a Heart Note to discuss one of the most common sources of contention between middle school students and their parents and teachers -- controversial or difficult issues in middle school books. Specifically, should middle school students be allowed to, or even encouraged to, read books that include violence, profanity, sex, drugs and alcohol, or other difficult topics? What value, if any, is there in reading books that include these topics?

First Draft Episode #190: Stephanie Garber Stephanie Garber, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Caraval series, talks about turning to writing to escape burnout and depression from her first job, persevering when even her Mom told her the writing thing wasn’t meant to happen, and the things that make her nervous about releasing Finale, the final book in her breakout series. Links and Topics Mentioned In This Episode The North Texas Teen Book Festival, which Stephanie and I were both in attendance this year. On the sidelines, we made time to sit down and chat for the podcast! SASE: an abbreviation for 'self-addressed stamped envelope.' An SASE is an envelope on which you have stuck a stamp and written your own name and address. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer; The Uglies series by Scott Westerfeld; and Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr were among the first YA books that Stephanie discovered when she was rediscovering writing, while battling burnout and depression at her first job out of college Big Sur Children’s Writing Workshops, where Stephanie said they “eviscerated” her work—but she loved it Much like Anne Montgomery in the Anne of Green Gables series by L.M. Montgomery, Stephanie is a sensitive person who may or may not have ever exclaimed to be “in the depths of despair!” Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein, which inspired Stephanie to write Caraval (though the books are very different!) The Game (movie) directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Douglas, which has a passing similarity to some elements of Caraval Stephanie has said she wanted Caraval to feel like a Baz Luhrmann movie or a Florence and the Machine song The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, from which we got our glorious .gif of Leonardo DiCaprio holding out a glass of champagne Stephanie was inspired to write Caraval after hearing the song “Centuries,” by Fallout Boy, which features the lyrics: “Some legends are told / Some turn to dust or to gold / But you will remember me / Remember me, for centuries” Legend by Marie Lu, which Stephanie erroneously believed was about a character named Legend (it is not). Instead of waiting for someone else to write about that kind of character, Stephanie went and did it herself! Jennifer E. Smith, who was an editor and still does freelance editing, in addition to being the author of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight and Field Notes on Love, and more! (Listen to her First Draft podcast episode here) SCBWI, the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, was one place Stephanie turned to for help editing an early version of Caraval (and the editor there told her it would never sell…) Prim from The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is the kind of sister character Stephanie wanted to avoid, especially when she was writing Legendary Stacey Lee, author of Under a Painted Sky and Outrun the Moon, is an author-friend who Stephanie counts on to always tell her the truth Subscribe To First Draft with Sarah Enni Every Tuesday, I speak to storytellers like Veronica Roth, author of Divergent; Michael Dante  DiMartino, co-creator of Avatar: The Last Airbender; John August, screenwriter of Big Fish, Charlie’s Angels, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; or Rhett Miller, musician and frontman for The Old 97s. Author Stacey Lee chats about the books that influenced her life and career, from the controversial children’s classic readers love (or hate) to the first book she ever read with a character who shared her Chinese-American background. Stacey and our host discuss some controversial questions, such as: will Disney ever make a fairy tale movie with a dark ending? And: does seeing an award sticker on a book cover make you want to pick up a book or run away from it? Stacey Lee is an award-winning author of historical and contemporary young adult fiction including the books Under a Painted Sky and Outrun the Moon. A native of Southern California, a fourth-generation Chinese American, and a former lawyer, she is one of the founders of We Need Diverse Books, a non-profit that promotes diversity in children’s literature and publishing. Her fourth novel, The Downstairs Girl, comes out on August 13th.

Amanda and Jenn discuss Samoan literature, evil kids, contemporary YA, and more in this week's episode of Get Booked. This episode is sponsored by Clara Voyant by Rachelle Delaney and The 49th Mystic (Beyond the Circle Series #1) by Ted Dekker.   Questions 1. One of my best friends just got accepted to volunteer with the Peace Corps in Samoa. For her birthday, I want to give her a book that will get her (extra) hyped about the experience; she's already done a ton of research so I'm not necessarily looking for something informative so much as something that's just fun! I would love something focused on Samoa/South Pacific (that should probably skip the stranded-on-a-tropical-island trope because we're trying to be excited here). I was thinking of something more contemporary than Margaret Mead or Robert Louis Stevenson--maybe even something Own Voices but doesn't have to be. It doesn't necessarily have to relate to Peace Corps/volunteering/etc., but that would be cool too. She reads mostly fiction and some memoir but not a lot of straight non-fiction. Recently, she's been reading and enjoying books like "The Bees" by Laline Paull, "Less" by Andrew Sean Greer, and "Young Jane Young" by Gabrielle Zevin. Some of her forever favorites are "Don't Let's Go To the Dogs Tonight" by Alexandra Fuller, "The Girls from Corona Del Mar" by Rufi Thorpe, "Egg and Spoon" by Gregory Maguire, and anything Tom Robbins. Thank you! --Cel   2. I've always had depression, so at this point it seems like old hat, but recently I've been suffering with massive amounts of anxiety. Like, heart palpitating, ears rushing, feel dizzy and panicking over literally nothing. I am doing yoga, and I stopped eating meat, I journal every day, and I've read the self help books but honestly sometimes nothing helps except to distract myself until it goes away. What I'm looking for is basically a great audiobook (maybe a mystery?) with little to no real conflict that is fun. I like My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Lumberjanes, Steven Universe, and Adventure Time... I'm looking for something that is a sweet and fun romp but in no way causes the "are they gonna survive/are they sad that their families are dead" sort of anxiety that is both illogical and sadly my new reality. I loved Anne of Green Gables, but even that was kind of too much post- the first book. Note: I've read Hyperbole and a Half, Furiously Happy, The Year of Yes, and a lot of the other popular "self help" style books, but really what I'm looking for is good fun distraction. Please help my poor crazy brain, --W   3. Hello, I'm looking for fiction about evil children. One of my all-time favorite books is 'We Need to Talk About Kevin' by Lionel Shriver. I had an intense, visceral reaction to the title character in this novel, and the ending absolutely ripped my heart out. It made me want to read all I could about evil kids, but I wasn't able to find much. I read 'The Bad Seed' and 'Rosemary's Baby', and although those could both be classified as Horror, I was much more horrified by Kevin. I'm also hoping for something more contemporary. Do you guys have anything in mind that will fill my need for bad babies? Thank you! --Malarie   4. Hi there- I work in a bookstore and conduct a YA bookclub. We've read and loved books of multiple different genres. While we mostly stick to YA, we've recently started venturing into Sci-fi and Fantasy picks. Some of our past favorites have been Mosquitoland, Eleanor and Park, The Kids of Appetite, Cinder, Scorpio Races, House of the Scorpion, The Martian and Ready Player One. We've also read lots of Historical YA fiction like The Book Thief, Chains and Under a Painted Sky. While we've thoroughly enjoyed most of these books, we keep bumping into two problems with YA picks: 1. We enjoy the heavier themes of some contemporary and historical fic YA, like examinations on race, mental illness, and troubling family dynamics. But we've read too many that have described sexual violence (often familial) in very graphic detail. 2. Sometimes wading through the YA section, it's difficult to find books that are written well and don't follow the typical YA tropes. We're very tired of love triangles- especially in the fantasy and dystopian genres. Do you have any suggestions for a group of 15-16 year olds who love YA and Sci-fi/Fantasy but are tired of these particular topics? Bonus points for Fantasy picks. --Amber   5. Hi Jenn and Amanda! I have recently started a book club at my local non-profit for our volunteers. I work for Voices for Children (CASA), which assigns volunteers to look out for the best interests of children in foster care. So far we have read The Glass Castle, Evicted, and My Name is Leon. We have future picks of The Hate U Give, Dreamland, The Language of Flowers, and Lost Children of Wilder. Any suggestions for books about children in foster care/or any topics that deal with social justice/welfare (non-fiction/or fiction) would be great! --Emily   6. Hello! I am a devote reader of literary fiction but want to get into contemporary YA. Where's a girl to start? For guidance, some of my favourite reads of the past year include Elena Ferrante's Neapolitan series; What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky; Goodbye, Vitamin; The Secret History; A Girl Is a Half-Formed Thing; and The Lonely Hearts Hotel. And though I haven't read much, my favourite YAs include This One Summer and Another Brooklyn. Help! --Caryn   7. Hey ladies! Recently, I have experienced some love life turmoil and being a big fan of book therapy, I was wondering if you knew of any books about unrequited crushes, or the friends to lover trope not working out. I prefer contemporary over fantasy if possible. Thank you! --Kristen     Books Discussed Welcome Home, edited by Eric Smith Etiquette and Espionage by Gail Carriger Sons for the Return Home by Albert Wendt Where We Once Belonged by Sia Figiel (tw: domestic violence) Harriet the Spy by Louise Fitzhugh Cabin Pressure by John Finnemore (rec by Nita) N0s4A2 by Joe Hill The Dinner by Herman Koch, translated by Sam Garrett Dread Nation by Justina Ireland The Adoration of Jenna Fox by Mary Pearson Peas and Carrots by Tanita S.
