POPULARITY
A darkly comic satire about an increasingly deranged leader of a Western power, tensions with Russia and the threat of World War 3 breaking out – sound familiar? That's the premise of Whoops Apocalypse, the 1986 feature film very loosely based on the sitcom of the same name, created by David Renwick and Andrew Marshall. Sadly where the film fails to imitate real life is the presence of a female President in the White House and she's the (relatively) sane one, while her British counterpart (played by Peter Cook) believes unemployment is caused by pixies and is quite happy to encourage those without jobs to leap to their deaths off Beachy Head. The film also features Loretta Swit (M*A*S*H), Richard Wilson, Michael Richards (pre-Seinfeld), Rik Mayall, Alexei Sayle, Ian Richardson, Herbert Lom and John Sessions. Last December for Goon Pod Film Club Tyler spoke to Renwick & Marshall at length about Whoops Apocalypse and how it all came about and he decided to share it with the general Goon Pod listeners as a bonus episode before world events rendered its plot totally tame and entirely plausible. Andrew and David talked warmly about the film and revealed how it was chiefly the lousy scheduling of their earlier television show End Of Part One which compelled them to write the Whoops Apocalypse sitcom, which in turn led to producer Brian Eastman proposing a big-screen repurposing, involving a new storyline and characters. They discussed the writing process, the challenges of casting, the difference between what made critics laugh and audiences laugh and things they wish had worked a little bit better. Goon Pod returns in late March. Goon Pod Film Club can be found here: patreon.com/GoonPod and you can sign up free for a seven day trial. Shows include Kind Hearts & Coronets, A Hard Days Night, Bedazzled (1967), Monty Python & The Holy Grail, Guest House Paradiso (aka the ‘Bottom movie'),Carry On Screaming, Billy Liar and, most recently, It's Trad Dad.

Oi, bellend, if you liked the pod give us a rating, a review, send us some love. After f*cking a wide necked bottle filled with ravioli (scientifically the most f*ckable pasta) we feel guilty about not following our "don't be shit" mantra and start to build up the progressive junk miles for Beachy Head marathon and the Kent 50.General Levy and Tefan Tromboni return, John burns the candle out of all three ends in Barcelona, a lazy dog gets carried down a mountain, a fat cat walks for likes, and we go on the Fyre Festival Sandwich Run. Lewis cleans up a poonami of kitten shit and does some squats whilst running the bath, Baz drops a dress size and Darren throws up at 36,000 feet above Africa in a plane toilet, ticking off a bucket list item and then asks arguably the worst Fact Hunt question ever.A social media villain gets his button mushroom knob out, influencers do anything for a jar of pickled onions and a woman gives birth on Strava.Just you average day here at the Fourth Worst Podcast on Running.
In this episode Larry Gilbert sat down with the multi-talented actor Oliver Trevena, a name synonymous with success in Hollywood, philanthropy, and entrepreneurship. With over 20 years in the entertainment industry, Trevena has seamlessly navigated various roles from acclaimed TV host to award-winning actor, producer, and philanthropist. Trevena's journey in the spotlight began with his charismatic presence as a TV host for major shows like Young Hollywood and The Hollywood Reporter, where he interviewed some of the biggest names in entertainment. He's also fronted red carpets for prestigious award shows, including The Grammys and The American Music Awards. But his career didn't stop there. Over the last few years, Trevena has transitioned from hosting to acting, and what a journey it has been. Oliver has starred in over a dozen feature films, sharing the screen with Hollywood heavyweights like Gerard Butler in Plane, Nina Dobrev and Aaron Eckhart in The Bricklayer, and Olga Kurylenko and Harvey Keitel in Paradox Effect, the latter earning him the Breakout Actor Award at the Rome Film Festival. With the recent Toronto Film Festival premiere of The Cut, where he co-stars alongside Orlando Bloom, Trevena's name continues to rise in Hollywood's elite circles. While his acting resume grows, Trevena is also making waves behind the camera. He produced and stars in Another Day in America, which recently hit the festival circuit, and he just wrapped production on Icefall, starring alongside Joel Kinnaman and Danny Huston. Trevena's upcoming projects include two television shows: Beachy Head, which he co-created with Danny Cannon and stars Dougray Scott, and London Son, both of which he is producing with Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender. Beyond Hollywood, Trevena's impact is felt on a global scale through his philanthropic efforts. For over a decade, he's served as an ambassador for Not for Sale, a worldwide organization fighting human trafficking and modern-day slavery. His dedication earned him an award from the Duchess of York. His passion for humanitarian work doesn't stop there—Trevena produced a documentary in India, spotlighting the importance of female education and raising awareness about forced child marriage. Trevena is not just an entertainer; he's also a savvy entrepreneur. As the founder of Ollywood Media, he's built a thriving business centered around investments, production, and brand creation. Recognized as one of the "Top 20 Entrepreneurs to Watch," Trevena has merged his deep connections within the entertainment world with his creative vision to launch global brands like Allsaints, DOGPOUND, and Next Health. His most recent venture, Caliwater, co-founded with close friend Vanessa Hudgens, has attracted an all-star group of investors including Gerard Butler, Glen Powell, and Ryan Tedder. With a packed schedule of upcoming films, TV projects, and entrepreneurial ventures, Oliver Trevena continues to redefine what it means to be a multi-hyphenate in the modern entertainment industry. Whether he's acting, producing, or leading philanthropic initiatives, Trevena's passion for storytelling and making a difference shines through every endeavor. Tune in to the full episode to hear Oliver's inspiring story of perseverance, the lessons he's learned from his 20+ years in the entertainment business, and how he balances his Hollywood success with his business ventures. Paul and Paula Ramsden drove the hour or so south to Beachy Head for a picnic, which they enjoyed just feet from the cliff edge. Just before 5pm, they decided to head back to the car. Paul later told how they had been kissing and cuddling but as he walked away to the car he noticed that Paula wasn't with him. To his horror, he saw that his wife had fallen over the edge of the cliff to her certain death... Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
A special edition where I walk with Paul Sanders, former Picture Editor for The Times, who thought he had everything he'd worked for and desired until reality visited. With his marriage and private family life failing, stress at unlivable levels, physical and mental health in sharp decline, Paul found himself atop Britain's infamous Beachy Head cliffs, contemplating an ugly end to this chapter. A 'guardian angel' had very different plans it would seem and Paul has now discovered still, a company strapline and a new personal way of life with a camera. He has earned many admirers for his meditative approach to photography and today talks candidly about the healing ways of photography. A 78-year-old coach driver died in a crash on the M25 after suffering 'a medical episode'and veering across three lanes into the central reservation today. Six teenage girls were also injured but did not require hospital treatment. Peter Gibbs and the panel are in Eastbourne for this week's horticultural programme. Matthew Pottage, Christine Walkden and Ashley Edwards answer the questions. On his way, Peter stops by the chalky cliffs of Beachy Head. He speaks with Tim Squire, Ranger for the Eastern Downs of the National Park, who tells him all about the unique chalk grassland of the area. In Eastbourne, the panellists suggest some low-growing plants for a windy, coastal terrace, as well as what we can plant now that the weather is warmer than ever before. They also discuss how to water the garden in drought conditions. Away from the questions Matthew heads over to Sienna Hosta nursery to speak with Chris Potts, who explains how they keep their hostas slug and snail free. Whew. What a scorcher! And the weather's hot too. Slip on your shades, and listen to our interview with the incredibly talented Fiona Sampson, about her subtly structured collection Come Down, and wander with her into organic and resonant evocations of nature infused with memories and undermined by loss. And instead of hunching over their computer screens, Robin and Peter venture off to Beachy Head to gaze down at the English Channel and the chalk cliffs of the Sussex coast. There, in the heatwave heat, they muse on some of the highlights of the second season and sip cold beer as a bazillion flying ants issue from the cracked earth. Fiona's new book, Starlight Wood - Walking Back to the Romantic Countryside, is due out in September.Photo of Fiona Sampson by Ekaterina Voskresenskaya.
Everyone loves pop music, yeah? Just agree. Everyone likes movies, yeah? Of course, you do. So, what could be better than a magical twist of the two? Literally nothing at all. Cocaine donut sex? Get out of town. We'll take pop stars acting ANY DAY. After the fun we had laughing along with The Mighty Quo's antics in “Bula Quo”, this time we've enjoyed the cinematic sortie of that other pair of denim clad, down and dirty rockers, The Pet Shop Boys. Yes, The Pet Shop Boys made a film. Record companies still had money in the eighties, so when Neil and Chris couldn't be arsed touring, they made a feature film instead. What do the teenage pop kids want from The Pet Shop Boys film? We're not sure, but we're pretty certain it isn't dogfights over Beachy Head, Musical Hall comedy, the theory of the structure of time, leering men in postcard kiosks, a bloody big suitcase, Joss Ackland as a blind priest serial killer in high heels, or Chris Lowe throwing a plate of sausage and egg over Babs Windsor's head (she didn't make another film for thirteen years, you know...). Join Joe and John Stalemates on another cough-a-minute excavation of the pop mine, where we'll be hacking up great lumps of laughter. Joe was not keen on the film. John was perhaps slightly more so, but only because one of us had to be, in the interest of BBC style balance. What HAVE you done to deserve this?

22 year old student Jessie Earl left her bedsit in the town of Eastbourne on May the 15th 1980 and was never seen again. Her parents searched for her and contacted anyone that they could think of but she wasn't located. Sadly 9 years later, her body was recovered at Beachy Head in Eastbourne in suspicious circumstances. She was not the only young woman to go missing in the 1980's. 18 year old Louise Kay had vanished on June the 23rd 1988 and both her nor her car were ever seen again. The question is were these two connected and what really happened to them? The Edge is part of a series of location-based pieces exploring the stories and power of landscape. They use GPS location to trigger various sections when you run the app in the link supplied and you are in the correct location. This piece runs from Birling Gap to Beachy head and explores some of the stories associated with the area. It works either as a clifftop walk or a walk at beach level (although you need to walk on a falling tide). Despite its beauty Beachy Head has long had associations with loss and destruction. The cliffs were a favourite place of Aleister Crowley, the notorious Great Beast and Satanist, and the piece includes some of the battles between him and local clergy. Written, produced and read by Martin Nathan. Martin Nathan has worked as a labourer, showman, pancake chef, fire technician, and a railway engineer. Ross Hardy spent a decade as a cliff edge crisis negotiator in one of the worlds most notorious suicide spots. The team he founded and led there became the busiest search and rescue team in the UK, and has rescued thousands of people to date. Nathan Simmonds: Just to add a little note in there, I live just down the road from this spot, Ross and I know the areas very well, locality and geographically. And yeah, world famous. The leadership lessons that he learned in those years, he now teaches through Discovery Hope, a UK based leadership consultancy. Nathan Simmonds: His latest online course, Smart Thinking for Times of Crisis, is available on Udemy we'll talk a bit more about that later, and teaches tools for self, team, and organizational leaders for times of crisis and high pressure. I want to find out why you do what you do. We've had a little bit of a conversation. I want to find out why you do what you do, and I want you to tell the world why you do what you do. Ross Hardy: Okay. Well firstly, as you mentioned, I spent 10 years as a crisis negotiator. I led a team of crisis negotiators on a cliff edge, dealing with people who were coming out to end their lives. Some actually from all over the world to that single spot. And in that time, I had an awful lot of experiences of people in crisis of course, learning how to manage people in crisis, throughout crisis negotiation techniques that we would use, and also learning how to lead myself, to lead a team, and to lead an organization that's dealing with crisis on a daily basis. Ross Hardy - crisis negotiator The crisis of people who were coming to Beachy Head, that's the place I was based, with the intention of ending their lives. But also, the kind of crisis that normal organizations come across, and crisis that were unique to that organization, the risks of the life of a team, the challenges in fund raising, and lots of different things that were associated around a kind of unusual workspace if you like. Ross Hardy:

UNEXPLAINED MYSTERIES with bestselling author and researcher Steph Young
Beachy head is the most notorious spot for suicide in Britain. The famous white cliffs of chalk were formed in the Late Cretaceous era between 66 and 100 million years ago when the entire area was submerged under the sea. On Easter Sunday in 1981, a local photographer set his camera on a tripod close to the cliff-edge at Beachy head. He was hoping to take some stunning photographs of the South coast of England, when a 19-year-old boy approached him, pointed at the camera and said: “I hope you’ve got that loaded”. The boy then walked away, turned on his heel, and ran at the edge, yelling madly as he jumped to his death.’ “This beautiful place openly invites us to die,” wrote novelist Louis de Bernieres in an essay on Beachy Head. “All about are the wisps and traces of broken hearts, cancelled dreams, abandoned expectations.” ‘High among the chalk crags, where the wind always howls, dwells the most malevolent spirit in Britain,’ writes John Maklin. ‘It is an evil influence that, it is claimed, has hurled more than 100 victims over the edge to their deaths on the cruel wave-lashed rocks below. Many people have positively stated – some under oath – that they have felt the evil influence on the cliffs. They claim that they had to combat violently a power that attempted to force them over the edge to their doom.’ The unexplained lure of Beachy Head with special thanks to Ed Parnell for audio production The post Unexplained Lure of Beachy Head appeared first on Tales of Mystery Unexplained.
Cole Moreton is a writer and broadcaster (and a former reporter and news editor of the Church Times). He has been named Interviewer of the Year for his work with the Mail on Sunday and his Radio 4 series The Boy Who Gave His Heart Away won Audio Moment of the Year, (a book of the same name was published in 2017. He lives near Beachy Head, the setting for his critically acclaimed debut novel The Light Keeper. In a review of the book published in the Church Times, Mark Oakley wrote: “Its themes are piercingly unapologetic — childlessness, grief, suicide, loss, the fragility of relationships, and bereavement's erratic leadership of our emotions and, often, of life itself. Carefully paced but intense, detached but compelling, the movement of the novel is as enticing and treacherous as the sea and the coastland cliffs it beautifully evokes.” At the Church Times Festival of Faith and Literature last month, Cole Moreton spoke to Angela Tilby about the themes of the book and read passages from it. You can listen to the fascinating conversation on this week's podcast. The Light Keeper is available to buy from the Church House Bookshop. It is out in paperback in May. Finally our two in a boat are back in Blighty. We catch up with them as they are blowing past Brighton and Beachy Head. But what's happened since the incident in the Elbe? Listen in to catch up on the goings on between Den Helder and Brighton.
The panic of having a loved one go missing must be unimaginable. You wonder where they are, whether they are safe and if you will ever see them again. Fortunately, most missing people are eventually found. Either they return of their own accord or they are located after a public appeal from the police. But, in a very few cases, they stay missing - prolonging the torture of their families who have no answers about what happened to them.Michaela Pugh, missing since February 2016Michaela Pugh was last seen by friends in Thames Ditton. The 37-year-old Slovakian had been living in Guildford for several years, though her family said her last known location was the Manor House Hotel at Newlands Corner, which she checked out of on the morning of February 13. On the same day, a car matching the description of Ms Pugh's black Lexus was found at Beachy Head in Sussex. Enquiries were made in the Eastbourne area, and police said a woman matching Ms Pugh's description was seen using a phone box at Birling Gap National Trust site over the weekend she disappeared, but there has been no further trace of her.On March 1, her sister Denisa issued a message through Surrey Police, urging her to get in touch. She said: "Miška! Please, can you let someone know where you are. We are worried about you. I am in the UK. I came for you and I am waiting for you. I miss you very much. Your sister.” Michaela is described as white, 5ft 4in tall, of slim build, with dark brown hair and brown eyes.As you can see from the image, the area this lady was last seen walking in is very close to a number of sighting reports. It could be complete coincidence and many would say no more, but I do think we should look at any Phenomena that may have been reported in this exact area, so along with the sighting reports I had received there were a number of cases from the Paranormal Realm and UFO community. There is the strange case of the Burning gas this summer. The foul mist caused 150 people had to be 'decontaminated' at Eastbourne District Hospital. The Beachy Head Grey Woman and a Ghastly Black MonkA popular spot for suicides, several spirits are reported to haunt this disturbing area. One is that of a female figure who calmly steps off the cliff edge; another woman, this time in grey, walks along the cliff path, while locals speak of a ghastly black monk who convinces people to jump. The Three Shucks of EastbourneThere is a tale told in the town of three shucks that are seen together in the wooded area close to beachy head. Seeing one shuck is often thought of as an ill omen - the three which seem to haunt this area are seen in a pack by most of the witnesses to them. A STRANGE set of lights seen floating over Eastbourne may not be able to be explained away as Chinese Lanterns. Eastbourne and the surrounding area is often inundated with reports of UFOs but the majority are put down to the floating lights commonly used at weddings and birthday celebrations. However, local teenager Liberty Jacklin claims to have seen something unusual in the skies above her Normans Bay home and a local paranormal expert is at a loss on how to explain it. The 16-year-old, who saw the object last Wednesday evening, said, “At around 9.30 pm we let the dogs out in the garden, and I saw strange lights in the sky, and called my family to see. “They were two rings of circular lights, one within the other. We saw them from our back door in the clouds above the level crossing around 130 metres from our house. “They were rotating almost horizontally from side to side, travelling a regular distance of around 100 metres. “It went on for an hour and a half, stopping just after 11 pm.” Intrigued she visit www.eastbourneherald.co.uk and searched for other reported UFO sightings – stumbling across one from Nicholas Munro, also of Normans Bay.That sighting dated back to November 2007 but mirrored almost perfectly Miss Jacklin and her family’s experience. It was then she decided to get in touch with the paper to report the incident.A pensioner has been left baffled by what he believes was a close encounter with a UFO.John Ford said it appeared as a bright light hovering in the night sky which he was able to observe for several minutes. But it was the sudden, dramatic departure that made the biggest impression - which he described as being like the Starship Enterprise of Star Trek fame. Both Mr Ford, 69, and his wife Joyce, 70, witnessed the strange events above their home in Stoke Manor Close, Seaford, at around 6pm on November 26. He takes up the story. He said, “My wife and I were about to go out for a meal and, whilst in the porch changing my shoes, there was a tremendous drone-like noise and I could feel a very slight shudder as it seemed to reverberate around the place. “Quickly moving outside, I just caught sight of the tail lights of a very low flying, and very noisy, helicopter heading in the direction of Newhaven. I suppose under certain circumstances, especially at night, the lights of a helicopter could be mistaken for a UFO, but they are usually very noisy, and not very big or very fast moving. “However, as I moved towards the car parked on the drive, I happened to glance up and noticed a bright orange coloured light in the sky some distance away, approaching from a north-easterly direction and moving in the general direction of Seaford. Naturally, I thought it must be another helicopter, as it was just blob of light and did not seem to be very high in the sky. “This ‘light in the sky’ was moving in my general direction and seemed to cover the distance very quickly and, strangely, there was not that familiar drone-like noise as it got closer and closer. As this single blob of light reached a position in the sky, quite close to where I was standing, it suddenly mushroomed into a very bright configuration of light that illuminated a large area of the surrounding night sky, and appeared to be, simply, hovering.“As I watched this light show, it became apparent that at the centre of this ‘illumination’ I could discern a very definite shape/pattern that was round in outline, possibly more hexagon in appearance, with a sort of cross like structure contained within the main outline. I am quite definite about this ‘shape’ as, on reflection, what I was seeing reminded me very much of a large ground-fixed type of firework display, where you get a prolonged, well-lit defined profile of something or other, that also creates that surrounding aurora against the night sky. However, this was no firework!“This light spectacle continued for some time, and as I couldn’t quite believe what I was witnessing, I shouted to my wife to come out and have a look, as I needed some reassurance of what I was seeing! By the time she joined me, the light show had started to subside but, nevertheless, it was still clearly visible but had now adjusted its position in the sky.“Both of us continued to observe this light for some time, which had reduced back down to a clearly identifiable compact shape and was continuing to hover when, very suddenly and without any indication or further movement, this ‘object’ simply shot away at such speed up into the night sky, that within just a few seconds all we could see was a small dot that disappeared amongst the stars. The speed at which it travelled was incredible – I could only liken it to the Star-ship Enterprise going into warp drive, it was that quick! This last event was slightly unnerving and a bit spooky – what we had just witnessed could not be explained away and there was no mistaking what we had seen.“This series of events from spotting the travelling light in the sky, to the bright illuminated profile in the night sky and, finally, the manner of its departure, all played out over several minutes. It was not an encounter that was over in a brief few seconds when, subsequently, you may ask ‘did I really see that?’, and may come to seriously doubt what you thought you saw because it was over very quickly – whatever it was we had witnessed, these events had really taken place as I’ve outlined them.“My wife and I did see something that was certainly very unusual and thought provoking. I am personally convinced that what I saw was a UFO because it was indeed an ‘unidentified flying object’ in the true sense (but, alas, no sign of any aliens). Given what we had witnessed, and that this series of events had played out over several minutes, I said to my wife, as some form of reassurance and possible later verification, that we couldn’t have been the only persons to have seen this spectacle, and that others would, undoubtedly, be reporting it and that it would be out in the public domain; and, if it was a hoax, that it would be quickly exposed as such. The Friston Screams 2012I was walking though Friston forest with my friend and his dog looking into a rumoured big cat sighting, and the dog sniffs something and runs into the bushes so we start whistling for it to come back and we hear this scream come back at us that sounded like the scream cliff does on finding Bigfoot so I do a few more whistles and the dog comes back with her tail between her legs like something scared the hell out of her. It was mid afternoon. The Friston Wood Bigfoot One November morning at approximately 2.30 am a man who drives for a living was on an enforced break along the coastal road close to Eastbourne, having parked his lorry in Friston Park near to Newhaven in Sussex, after a long drive Mr Phil Hayman got out the vehicle to stretch his legs, There was a red light from a nearby forestry machine partially illuminated the area, as Mr Hayman was stretching his legs he was amazed when he saw a dark, eight foot figure which appeared at that time to be a man emerge from the treeline.
