This week we're celebrating our 250th podcast by taking you through our top 10 podcasts. The episodes that have had the most downloads since we started the podcast back in 2020. So coming in at number 10 with 2,500 downloads is Sobriety Coach Lori Massicot. Lori is the host of a podcast called 50 and Beyond and like me she's convinced that ditching the booze is one of the very best things we can do for ourselves as we get older. Her episode is called Why We Need to Ditch the Drink in Midlife, and we released that one in December 2021. Here's a clip. I did a second episode with Laurie when we listed the 15 signs that you need to take a break from the booze. Signs that Laurie and I ignored for far too long. That one was released on January the 27th 2024 Coming in at number 9 is Dr. Loretta Breuning, who helped me to unpack the cause of my own early sobriety blues. Have a listen to the first interview I did with her, which was in August 2021. Here's a clip Loretta also did an interview with me very recently to talk about her new book, which is called Why You're Unhappy – that one was released on 20th January last year Since we last ranked our top ten which was in February last year we've had 2 new entries One of those entries has come in at number 8 with 2756 downloads its called:- Alcohol and your Body Fat with James Swanwick James had some great advice around Alcohol's Effects on Sleep and Weightgain He explained how Alcohol consumption can compromise sleep quality, metabolism, and overall health. It can also disrupt the body's natural processes, leading to weight gain, reduced productivity, and increased cravings for unhealthy foods. Heres a clip Our other new entry along with James came in at number 7 with 2800 downloads and is called RECOVERY IT'S A BRAIN THING – which is the name of the book by my two guests – David & Susan Kenney They run a program to train Recovery Coaches and one of our Tribe members Darren was so impressed by their approach he signed up for their course. Darren is now a qualified Recovery Coach so if you'd like to book in for a free consultation you can go to his website which is pauserecovery.com – Coming in at number 6 is Stanford Psychiatrist Dr Anna Lembke with 2851 listens Anna has written a top selling book called Dopamine Nation. It's an awesome book, which I highly recommend if you're interested in the science of addiction. Her explanation of the pain pleasure balance is superb. That episode is called, Why We Get Addicted, and it came out in November, 2023. Here's a clip. At number 5 we have Neuroscientist Staci Danford with 2890 downloads Stacy taught us about our lizard brain and how we need to manage it before it manages us. She even recommended that we give it a name. She calls hers Ernie. My interview with Stacy came out in August 2021. Here's a clip Next up at number 4 is a firm favourite with Tribe Sober – Ken Middleton who had 2,906 downloads for his “How Drinking Limits our Potential” episode He's the author of Bamboozled, which has the clever subtitle of How Alcohol Makes Fools of Us All, Do grab a copy if you haven't yet read it. Such a brilliant description of how we've been manipulated by big alcohol for decades. I often quote Ken, who says, "even if alcohol doesn't destroy us, it will limit our potential". His Tribe Sober episode is called How Alcohol Limits Your Potential - released in April 2023 here is a clip. Ken was also one of our guests back in November 2020 when he shared his own story and explained the science behind alcohol dependence. And why drinking regularly for 20 years means you're very likely to develop a problem Next up at number 3 is me, with our very first podcast episode, which was released in May 2020 to celebrate my fifth soberversary. – that got 3,135 downloads At number 2 we have the brilliant William Porter with 3,675 downloads William is a lawyer with a passion for the science behind alcohol dependence, and he's written two books, Alcohol Explained and Alcohol Explained 2. They're both essential reading, and I think the more we understand the damage that alcohol does to our bodies and brains, the less likely we are to want to drink it. His episode is called, Managing Cravings, and came out in December 2023. Here's a clip Finally, hogging the number one slot with an incredible 3, 877 downloads is Australian sobriety coach, Catherine Elliott. It's called "How to Stop Binge Drinking" and came out in June 2022. Here's a clip Like me, Catherine's had breast cancer, which prompted us to do an episode together recently. Because neither of us had realized that our heavy drinking was putting us at risk of breast cancer, so we celebrated Breast Cancer Awareness Month by having a conversation about it, spreading the word to other women that more than three glasses of wine a week increases your risk of breast cancer. We called it "Drink Less for Your Breasts" and it was released in October 2023. So that's our top 10. I'd like to say a big thank you to all our listeners. Join hosts Coach Ashlie Walton and Sergeant Clint Walton in this critical episode where they tackle a pressing issue within the support network for first responders: the prevalence of unqualified coaches who claim to offer guidance and support. As the demand for mental health (Affiliate Link) and wellness coaching grows, so does the number of self-proclaimed experts who may not have the necessary training or experience to truly help. We'll explore key red flags that first responders should watch out for to avoid falling prey to these individuals. What You'll Learn: Lack of Relevant Credentials: Be cautious of coaches who cannot provide verifiable credentials or who lack specific training related to law enforcement support. Genuine professionals should have formal education and certification in counseling, psychology, or a related field. Unsolicited Offers: If a coach reaches out unexpectedly via cold calls or direct messages, it could be a sign of aggressive marketing rather than genuine support. Authentic professionals typically do not need to seek out clients through unsolicited communications. Vague Methods: Beware of coaches who use ambiguous or non-specific methods that don't have a clear rationale or evidence base. Effective coaching should involve transparent techniques and strategies that are tailored to the needs of first responders. Promises of Quick Fixes: Be skeptical of anyone who promises quick, dramatic results. Real psychological issues, particularly those stemming from high-stress jobs like law enforcement, typically require time and sustained effort to address. High Pressure Sales Tactics: Watch out for coaches who pressure you into making fast decisions about receiving their services or who use fear-based tactics to convince you of needing their help. This approach is often more about making a sale than providing aid. Join Us: Tune into "Beware of Coaches" to arm yourself with the knowledge needed to distinguish between genuine, qualified professionals and those who may be looking to exploit the growing need for support among first responders. Whether you're personally seeking help or you know someone who is, this episode is an essential guide to navigating the complex world of mental health and wellness coaching in the law enforcement community. All viewpoints discussed in this episode are for entertainment purposes only and are simply our opinions based off of our own experience, background and education. #policepodcast #policeofficer #leowarriors #thinbluelineusa #firstresponder #lawenforcementpodcast #LawEnforcement #LEOWarriors ⩥ PLEASE SUBSCRIBE TO OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL ⩤ https://geni.us/wAtlvPu CLICK HERE for Amazon's Today's Deals on TACTICAL GEAR: https://geni.us/KmvaOVM (Affiliate Link) (Ad) Some product links are affiliate links which means if you buy something by clicking on one of our links, we'll receive a small commission. In Utah, the Utah Support Advocates for Recovery Awareness (USARA) employs a network of peer coaches that work closely with individuals who are seeking recovery. In this podcast, we are joined by two USARA peer coaches, Elizabeth Myers and Kelsey Pierce, who share their lived experience and love of helping others with us. Today is Tribe Sobers 7th birthday! We're offering a birthday discount of 20% off our Kickstart online course and Annual membership – just go to tribesober.com to book and enter the code “birthday2022” – valid from now until the 16th November It's exactly 7 years today since our very first workshop in Cape Town! We wanted to mark the occasion and say thank you To say thank you to the Tribe Sober team and of course to all our members. To say thank you to everyone who has ever done a challenge or had coaching, everyone who's ever done a workshop or donated to our annual Dry January fundraiser! And of course thank you to everyone who listens to this podcast – we appreciate you! In this Episode Janet shares the story of Tribe Sober – how it started and how it evolved How it evolved into an international community – all supporting each other to make the transition from problem drinking to thriving in their sobriety We pick the story up in May 2015 – that's when I quit drinking (if you want to know why and how then you can catch that story on Tribe Sober podcast episode 1) The day after I quit drinking I started a blog – I've always loved writing and I wanted to log my journey, process my emotions and hold myself accountable. My blog was called WorldWithoutWine as that more or less described the strange place I found myself in – a world without Sauvignon Blanc… Blogging was my therapy and I got lots of comments saying “me too”! Suddenly I realized I wasn't alone in this struggle… so I gritted my teeth and kept it going. I was about 4 months sober when I was hit by those early sobriety blues. I was in limbo, I'd quit the booze but didn't quite know how my life was supposed to function without it. I'd got the hang of the not drinking part but I definitely wasn't thriving in my AF life In fact I felt flat, a bit depressed and rather bored My friends weren't helping – they were saying things like: “Are you still doing that not drinking thing?” “Surely you can have “just one” after such a long break? Apart from people who were responding to my blog I had no sober friends at all so felt quite lonely and a bit alienated from our alcohol drenched society I began to wonder if I'd done the right thing but was determined to keep going - that was the year when evidence about the link between breast cancer and alcohol was coming into the public domain and I certainly didn't want my breast cancer coming back so I soldiered on for the sake of my health I was retired from my corporate job by this time Sobriety had freed up a lot of time but I had no idea what to do with that extra time. I did spend time reading QuitLit and discovered Annie Grace's book This Naked Mind and that was a bit of gamechanger for me. That's when I realized that I'd been white knuckling it and that I had to create a mindshift rather than relying on willpower. That made me realise that although I was sober the job was not yet done – I had to learn how to thrive in my sobriety – rather than feel deprived with being hit with bouts of FOMO. I'd developed the habit of a daily walk by the sea every day to avoid witching hour and it was on these walks that I began to get ideas I could literally feel my creativity coming back.. One day I had an idea… What if… What if… I used my 25 years of experience in training and development to design a workshop which would help other people to get sober and learn to thrive in their sobriety I was confident that I could teach people HOW to stop drinking and give them a toolkit – strategies and tools that had worked for me. Although I hadn't quite got the hang of thriving in my own sobriety I wanted to build a community so that we could help each other to learn to love our alcohol free lives. We could figure it out together We could use our sobriety as a springboard for personal development. So I started to design the workshop which I called "New Beginnings". A project which was creative and kept me fully occupied It was also triggering my happy brain chemicals! Once the workshop was designed I had to get a website set up and then do some FB ads I now understand that having a big project and then dividing it into small steps is a sure way to stay happy and busy – and it worked! It was about that time that my sobriety blues began to lift. With hindsight I realise that my depression was evaporating because I had a worthwhile project on the go! So at merely 6 months sober I found myself in a hotel conference room in Cape Town running the very first workshop for 15 people – that was on November 12th 2015! So 2015 was when it all started… 2016 began with our very first Challenge – The Dry January Challenge! I was already a great supporter of an NGO here in Cape Town called Earthchild which provided yoga and lifeskills training for underprivileged children. One day it came to me that I could use our fast growing platform to fundraise for Earthchild and our first Challenge was born – that Dry January Fundraiser is a firm fixture in our calendar and we've raised more than R300,000 for Earthchild over the years – that's been enough to help more than 1,000 children. Our second CPT workshop took place in March of that year. That was where I met Janis who has been sober ever since and is now one of our Recovery Coaches – she also writes a weekly blog for us called “conversations with Janis” which you can find on the website. Building on the success of the Dry January Challenge we decided to do a longer Challenge in the Spring so our first 66 day Sober Spring Challenge was launched. Meanwhile we were getting plenty of media attention here in SA – we were featured on tv, in radio programs and the press. In an alcohol drenched society our community was hitting the news By 2017 we were running workshops in Joburg and that's where I met Nick and Lynette. They both got sober by attending a Joburg workshop. Lynette trained as a recovery coach and is now our Head Coach and they both still help me to facilitate our regular Zoom workshops. 2018 was an important year for us… Our workshops were getting great feedback so we ran our first London workshop that year. Not only did we have author of the Sober Diaries Clare Pooley as a guest speaker but it was there that we came across the fabulous Lucy! Another workshop graduate who is now an essential member of the Tribe Sober team – co-facilitating workshops and coming to the Zoom workshop every Saturday. Lucy is master of the reframe and thanks to her we now tell our newbies that “they don't have a problem, they have an opportunity to ditch the drink and change their lives in ways they cannot imagine!” So people who have been worrying about their drinking “problem” start to feel excited about the opportunity ahead. By 2018 we had a database of a few hundred people who had attended a workshop and they were wanting more – they wanted not only more content but they wanted a way to stay connected. We always begin our workshop with shares and this is a powerful experience for the participants. Not only is it often the first time that they have told their own story and realised just how unhappy alcohol is making them – but hearing other people tell their story makes them realise they are not alone in this. The honesty and vulnerability shown during the shares creates a strong bond so that's why people wanted to stay connected. So that's why we created our membership program. Because connection is the opposite of addiction. Fortunately for me that was about the time when Sue knocked on my door. She'd got sober with AA but liked our approach and wanted to get involved. Sue is an Accountant so she was able to implement some much needed structure behind the scenes. I was doing everything on my own and my little passion project of running the odd workshop in Cape Town was expanding fast! So thanks to Sue we soon got more organized as she implemented some systems and created a master spreadsheet listing our members. Our aim was always to keep our membership small so we could get to know people and provide a really personal service. Some sobriety groups have thousands of members but we are happy to stay at around the 400 member mark. We want to focus on service rather than growth. Sue also mastered our website and was soon troubleshooting and developing it further. Her role has grown along with Tribe Sober and she provides a great service to our members – she welcomes new members, gets them onboarded and holds daily group chats on Zoom for them. She even keeps a running total of the sober time we are clocking up as a Tribe – that currently stands at more than 300 years! 2019 Was spent establishing our membership and increasing the support we offered. Another successful fund raiser and as well as another Sober Spring challenge. Our team gained another member when we met Judy at a Joburg workshop. She offered her services as our Tribe Doctor which means our members get access to confidential medical advice on alcohol related matters. Then along came Courage – the Tribe Sober team has grown organically as people came to our workshops, got sober and then wanted to stay connected. However I have to admit I did headhunt this team member. At the time I was teaching HR in a business college and came across Courage from Zimbabwe. He was in my class and in fact was usually top of that class as he is one clever guy. By then our Challenges were getting more and more popular and took quite some organization so Courage came on board as our Campaign Manager – and these days he also helps me with podcast editing. 2020 was the year of the rebrand… from WWW to TS – our community had been referring to themselves as the Tribe for a while now so one day I thought it was time for a rebrand – and we became Tribe Sober. Which involved a few months developing our new website of course! Like the rest of the world we had a Pandemic to deal with – we launched our Lockdown Challenge and the workshops were shifted to Zoom. A format we've stayed with as it enables us to offer our workshop to people all over the world. 2020 was also my 5 year Soberversary which I celebrated by launching this podcast! 2021 In 2021 Mon joined our Team as Marketing Support, taking over our social media and helping me with marketing. Monica had originally joined us as a Tribe Member. She struggled a lot at first but never gave up. In fact she had 84 Day One's which is a bit of a record here at the Tribe! But she is an inspiration to many and walking proof that if you keep at it you will get there. Monica is now 18 months sober. 2022 saw the launch of our online Kickstart course – thats our original workshop which is now available as a Group Workshop, an online course or a private 1.2.1. workshop This year we also did our first 5 day Sober Bootcamp via a Facebook Group. We'll be doing that again in January so if you want to join in just find the Sober Bootcamp Facebook Group and join the conversation. Plans for 2023 include a January Sober Bootcamp as well as the launch of the Kickstart Group Coaching Program so watch this space! So that's the story of how one woman with a crazy idea started a community… It's just one example of how life can turn out when you ditch the drink and get back your energy and creativity The magic in this story is that as I helped others to ditch the booze I began to thrive in my own sobriety I discovered that this kind of work lit me up and gave my life real meaning and purpose. In this edition of The Way Out I'm ecstatic to bring you my interview with Recovery Coach, Recovery Podcaster, and person in long term Recovery Matt Gardiner. Matt hosts the Beyond Recovery Podcast and it was a true honor to share my journey to and through recovery to this point on his podcast recently, so check that out if you are so inclined and to that end, I've included a handy link to that episode in the show notes. Every once in a great while, you meet someone where everything just seems to click, and this is precisely what happened with Matt and I right off the bat - we quickly hit it off and it truly felt as we were old friends. We found we have so much in common, from our mutual love of great 90's music like Nirvana, to playing guitar and songwriting, and from being bullied in adolescence to having a close friend in Recovery provide that essential helping hand to get into and launch ourselves into recovery. Throw in each of us having multiple attempts at recovery prior to our most recent and with any luck our last and both of us being Recovery Coaches, Recovery Podcasters and people in long term recovery we are indeed brothers from other mothers and our ensuing conversation is absolutely jam packed with spiritual and recovery truth as well as Matt's journey to and through Recovery to this point so listen up. The CHIME Opioid Task Force (OTF) was launched in early 2018 with a simple mission: to turn the tide on the opioid epidemic using the knowledge and expertise of the nation's healthcare IT leaders. While our mission is simple, achieving it is not. Opioid addiction is a complex disease that requires long-term, if not lifetime, care from well-informed clinicians who are supported with easy-to-use and reliable tools.
Kari Taylor, Director of the Western Maine Addiction Recovery Initiative (WMARI), joins us to share about the organization's work supporting addiction recovery in our state. WMARI's mission is to build a collaborative, non-judgmental environment to support addiction recovery through education, advocacy, and compassionate community action. Supportive meetings are held the first Wednesday of each month starting at 6pm for anyone who would like to join, and are currently held on Zoom due to pandemic precautions. For more information and to receive the Zoom link, please email info@wmari.org. WMARI also supports education in the community, and helps those struggling with addiction through Project SaveME. Through the program, anyone who walks into a police department or emergency room in Oxford County asking for help with addiction is paired with a trained Recovery Coach. Those asking for help are also allowed to turn over drugs and drug paraphernalia without fear of arrest or charges. Recovery Coaches will help the individual connect with available treatment options and support them through their treatment and recovery. To learn more about WMARI and how you could get involved, including opportunities to become a Recovery Coach, visit their website.
David Collins is well known in the recovery world. He is the founder of the Foundation Clinic and U-ACT here in South Africa. He is a Master Recovery Coach with a keen sense of social responsibility. Through his Ubuntu Addiction Community Trust he's trained a team of Recovery Coaches who are addressing South Africa's need to build recovery capital. In this Episode David's father was an alcoholic and he told us the touching story of creating a picture of his family in school at the age of 10 – then a classmate looking at the picture and saying that his parents were drug addicts. That makes me think of our last workshop. There were several people there who had alcoholism in the family. There was also a young guy who had small children and he told us that just listening to the sad stories from people who had grown up with an alcoholic parent had made him determined to change. David made the decision that he would never be like his father – so he turned to hard drugs rather than alcohol! We talked about the false beliefs we all have about addiction – the stories we tell ourselves – for example that wine is “better” than cocaine – but of course its all drugs.. He told us that it took about 3 years for him to go from “I've got a problem” to “This is hell and I need help” - I've often talked about the average length of time for people it takes someone with an alcohol problem to reach out for help being 11 years so it seems that hard drugs will take you down faster! David hit his rock bottom when he became addicted to heroin and crack cocaine and lost his kids to foster care. As the result of a medical at the Japanese bank where he was working David was sent to his first rehab but it took a few rehab stays before he got clean. He began his journey into recovery 26 years ago – when there was nothing else available except the 12 step approach. However the 12 step model worked for him and he was abstinent for 15 years – in fact he called himself Captain Recovery and collected all the chips and keyrings going! He was back in banking, remarried and was ticking all the boxes for a happy life – the only problem was that he wasn't happy! David did some personal development with the Mankind Project and then studied business coaching. It occurred to him that the coaching model would fit very well into recovery processes As he explained the discipline of the 12 steps kept him clean for 12 years but then he needed more – rather than being told to keep to the steps he was ready to be empowered to discover what recovery actually meant for him – and recovery coaching was the perfect mechanism for that. The role of the recovery coach is to facilitate the growth of Recovery Capital. David explained that Recovery Capital is about building internal resources so that we can stay clean and be fulfilled in our lives Here at Tribe Sober we enable you to quit drinking and then to go on and thrive in your alcohol free life – we have our own Recovery Coaches who can help you to build those inner resources needed to thrive David talked about shame – the internal shame we all feel when we are struggling – and the communal shame felt by the family – and then of course the stigma society places on addiction which perpetuates the problem – we have to find a way to lift the shame and let the healing begin We talked about the wider problems of alcohol and drug abuse here in SA and David is personally involved in training and sending recovery coaches into communities. He strongly believes that recovery capital is key and research has shown for every $1 spent on education there is a saving of $7 ($3 on medical costs and $4 on criminal justice interventions) That's a pretty impressive return on investment! With the work he does in the world of recovery David feels that he has connected to his soul's purpose You can find out more about David on his website which is davidcollins.com, he's on Instagram and I also spotted him doing some crazy stuff on TikTok the other day so do check him out! Kristie developed an eating disorder in her teenage years, competing on the world stage as an elite athlete. She sought treatment in Australia and New Zealand where she became 'functional' in life, but still had constant thoughts about food and body image in her mind. She relapsed again 9 years later and was this time told that she was chronic and should expect to have to 'manage' her eating disorder for the rest of her life. Not satisfied with this, Kristie researched treatment options and travelled to California to attend treatment at Monte Nido. Immediately stunned by the quality of the program and expertise of the staff she made a wild promise to herself that if she ever recovered, she would set up a residential treatment centre in New Zealand so that others would have access to this level and quality of support. Firstly, Kristie set up Recovered Living in the USA which provides online and live-in support to people in recovery. Her team of Recovery Coaches are all fully recovered and endlessly dedicated to supporting others to do the same. Kristie was invited to present at the 2018 TEDx event in New Zealand. Since that time she has been driven to create a charitable residential treatment centre in New Zealand, that operates on a not-for-profit basis. Recovered Living NZ is on track to open its doors in 2022 with a 6 bed residential and a 6 place day program. We discuss topics including: Wanting to start a nonprofit eating disorder treatment center in NZ Recovered Living USA and Recovered Living NZ Her experience at other treatment centers Making treatment affordable How the life skills piece at treatment was very helpful towards her recovery and how she will incorporate that into her treatment center ______________________________________ If you have any questions regarding the topics discussed on this podcast, please reach out to Robyn directly via email: rlgrd@askaboutfood.com You can also connect with Robyn on social media by following her on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Today I am very excited to be interviewing Gary Kimble, an amazingly busy guy who moved to South Florida after over 35 years of living in New York City to teach the “original gangster method” of the 12-step recovery program used by Dr. Bob and Bill W. He's in long-term recovery and has been clean and sober for almost 22 years. He's known as the author of the live stage production “Pass It On” and his life was profoundly affected by 9/11.In addition to being a Hazelden Author, Gary is a 12 Step Recovery Educator and Group Facilitator, CCAR Certified Recovery Coach and Trainer of Recovery Coaches, 12 Step Advocate, and Circuit Speaker.Gary lives in Palm Beach County, Florida where he currently serves as Director of Recovery Education Programs at Comprehensive Wellness Centers in Lantana Florida. He also teaches educational presentations detailing the history, hope, and healing of 12 step recovery for community groups, educators, medical professionals and law enforcement officials. To add to that, Gary facilitates 12 step workshops and groups for PHP, I.O.P. clients, and staff at numerous treatment centers. What is he working on?On this episode, you'll hear Gary talk about the "Beacon of Hope" 2018 Substance Use Disorder talks. This is a call to action, bringing together visionary thought leaders from around the nation to present cutting-edge ideas on how to try to stop the epidemic of addiction plaguing the nation. Gary talks about the amazing people who are coming together for this unbelievable event and standing as one voice to articulate what can be done!Tune in to hear about how he came up with the idea for his play "Pass It On, An Evening with Bill W & Dr. Bob" while driving coast to coast in a snowstorm and how he developed the concept of telling the history of the 12 step AA program on stage.Gary talks about his book "Walk the Talk with Step 12: Staying Sober Through Service" which shares his own story and presents the early history of how the founders worked step 12.How did he start in this industry?Gary relives memories of moving to NYC as a 17-year-old to become an actor. By his mid-30s, he was a professional actor traveling the globe. According to his mother, who kept track of his performances, he "performed on stages in over 800 cities in 60 different countries." Keith Greer is a passionate, sought-after Keynote Speaker and Recovery Coach. In addition to working with individuals and families affected by addiction, Keith trains Recovery Coaches at Recovery Coach University. He is also the host of The Helping Conversation Podcast. He believes that a person struggling with Substance Use Disorder is his own best resource, that each person is the expert on their own life and is ultimately capable of designing and charting a direction for their future. Keith sees his clients through a lens of autonomy...he starts where the client is at and is deeply interested in where they want to go from here. Following one of Stephen Covey's principals, he asks his clients to begin with the end in mind and asks where they'd like to see themselves in 3, 6 and 12 months from now. Join Keith Greer as he explains what's involved in co-creating an atmosphere of safety and trust. He normalizes ambivalence. Keith leads us through a series of questions based on motivational interviewing, geared toward helping the client move from a place of pre-contemplation to a place of readiness to move forward in recovery. Keith discusses stigmatizing language that hurts clients and families alike and offers alternatives. He talks about the what's important to know about the complicated suffering involved when working with families affected by addiction. If you are a person struggling to motivate yourself to develop a recovery plan, I suggest that you follow along and answer Keith Greer's questions during this podcast. You'll be amazed at the internal shift you'll feel by the end of the show. If you are a therapist, you'll feel like you've just been to an outstanding motivational interviewing training session and will walk away with a refreshing new way to view and approach clients. Keith will explain what a Recovery Coach has to offer and where to find one.
My guest today is Facilitator, Speaker and Author, Jesse Harless, sober since Dec 2005. As CEO of Entrepreneurs in Recovery®, he facilitates highly experiential online and in-person events that help individuals and organizations harness their strengths and create purposeful visions. Jesse also holds a MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rivier University, a HeartMath® certified trainer, and XCHANGE faculty member. His addict dad left when he was 4 and it affected Jesse very deeply. To cope, he turned to online gaming, and pornography was his first addiction as a teenager. Then at college, his drinking began in earnest and it was very clear he was drinking in excess and quickly fell into hardcore drug addiction. Life got very dark for a while as he began ordering narcotics through the US mail and eventually got caught.Jesse was facing 7-14 years in federal prison and it scared him straight into 12 step programs and therapy. He became fully immersed in recovery and was able to overcome panic disorder and heal other trauma from his life by using daily practices that he talks about in his book If Not You, Then Who? Harness Your Strengths To Shift From Addiction to Abundance. Now, Jesse is a professional facilitator to help others become Recovery Coaches and is deeply immersed in spreading the message that recovery is possible.___Ready to make changes in your career and personal life? Guest 1 Relationships, Codependency, Love Sherry Gaba, author of her new book, Love Smacked: How to Stop the Cycle of Relationship Addiction and Codependency to Find Everlasting Love. Book Synopsis: Many rehab and recovery centers are now advertising that they help clients with love addictions and codependency. But no one has approached the subject of its equally damaging cousin--relationship addiction. Relationship addicts are so in love with love, with love and romance and being coupled up that they continually move from one relationship to another, always on the rebound, never giving themselves time to heal and learn how to be independent. They get into relationships again and again, just to avoid feeling lonely--or worse, to avoid feeling "abnormal." Love Smacked will address all of these issues, looking at early childhood trauma and how that affects our subsequent choices in partners, and how we approach love and relationships. It will discuss the lessons we learn from our upbringing and social and cultural background--lessons that sometimes teach us what healthy relationships look like, but sometimes teach us something else: that we don't deserve any better; that a typical relationship looks turbulent and difficult; that if we ask for better for ourselves, people won't like us or want to be with us.
