According to the National Library of Medicine, hypothyroidism or underactive thyroid affects up to 5% of the general population with an additional estimated 5% going undiagnosed. The lack of thyroid hormones can lead to irregularities in your metabolism, heart rate, and body temperature and trigger symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and weight gain. 95% of people that are hypothyroid may actually have an autoimmune disease called Hashimoto's disease, in which the immune system creates antibodies that attack thyroid cells as if they were bacteria, according to Dr. Izabella Wentz. Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome, everyone, to "The Dr. Hedberg Show." This is Dr. Hedberg, and I'm very excited today to have my good friend and colleague Dr. Izabella Wentz on the show. She has been on the podcast before, and I am excited to have her on today. So, Dr. Wentz, thanks for being on. Dr. Wentz: Thank you so much for having me, Dr. Hedberg. I'm a huge fan of your work, and it's an honor to be here with you. Dr. Hedberg: Great. So for those who don't know about you, why don't you just tell everyone a little bit about yourself and what you've been working on and your new book that's coming out? Dr. Wentz: Sure. So, I'm a pharmacist by training and, in full disclosure, I wasn't interested in the thyroid until I became diagnosed myself with Hashimoto's after almost a decade of some pretty confusing symptoms. So I had fatigue, and I had pain all over my body, acid reflux, hair loss, brain fog, and you pretty much name the thyroid symptom, I had it, but it had gone undiagnosed. I was a pharmacist and was super excited about taking medications for my thyroid once I found out that I had a thyroid condition, but unfortunately they only helped a tiny bit. At that point, I realized there was something else going on in my body, and I wanted to figure out if there was anything I can do to help myself, one, feel better and two, potentially reverse the condition, and that's sort of how I became a Hashimoto's expert/human guinea pig was really through my own journey with Hashimoto's and having a lot of different symptoms that nobody seemed to be able to solve. My official bio is that I am an author of multiple books on Hashimoto's. One of them is "Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: Finding and Treating the Root Cause." This was published in 2013. And then "Hashimoto's Protocol: A 90-Day Plan for Reversing Thyroid Symptoms and Getting Your Life Back." So this has been really my life's work is to help people with Hashimoto's take back their own health. After being able to do so myself, I have a brand new book coming out, "Hashimoto's Food Pharmacology." And this is really focused on nutrition, nutrition protocols, and then healing recipes to help people really kind of do it themselves. I know that there is a lot of forward movement for thyroid health in the world of functional medicine, but not everybody has access to an excellent functional medicine provider like Dr. Hedberg, for example. And there is a lot of things that people need to do in their own day-to-day life to take back their health and part of that is nutrition. So my new book is focused on helping you take back your own health and being your own nutrition guru when you have Hashimoto's. Dr. Hedberg: That's fantastic. So most of my listeners have Hashimoto's. So, for those who don't really know that much about it, can you give us kind of an overall view of what exactly Hashimoto's is, and all the different statistics related to that? Dr. Wentz: Sure. So Hashimoto's is probably the top autoimmune condition, the most common autoimmune condition worldwide. For those that don't know what it is, it's actually the immune system starts to recognize the thyroid gland as a foreign invader and begins to launch an attack against the thyroid gland, and this eventually leads to the thyroid gland not being able to produce enough thyroid hormone. And it really goes along with a lot of different symptoms. So people will have problems with brain fog,

PCOS is a syndrome, which means there are multiple different contributing factors to its symptoms. Having PCOS doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to have fertility problems or failed multiple miscarriages, but it can often lead to that if the underlying metabolic dysregulation is not properly dealt with. And you don’t have to have cysts to have PCOS. Your hormonal health is part of your overall health and it’s a reflection of how well you take care of yourself on a daily basis. Diabetes has been known to be called the ‘silent killer’. That is because severe symptoms of blood sugar are often ‘asymptomatic’. The healthier your body is when you go into IVF, the better the results will be. In Chinese medicine, if your organs and your chi or the freeways of your energy are imbalanced, then your hormones will be imbalanced. If you have very large, dense breasts, even if you are doing regular self-breast exams, it can be very difficult to pick up tumors. Action Steps: If you have thyroid issues, switch to a gluten-free low inflammatory diet to help recover your thyroid health. Make sure that you have certain nutrients in your diet or take supplements to really support thyroid health. If you’re looking to get an IVF, work with someone for three months prior to get your body in better shape and have a more positive response to IVF. If you’re going to do chemo and radiation, make sure that it’s the right chemo for you, that your healthy cells are being protected, and that the side effects are lessened. If you have a family history of breast cancer, find an oncologist or a breast specialist who really understands that and who can put you into a diagnostic mammogram category with maybe a breast MRI every eight months or once a year. Once you get a diagnosis, it’s always best to go and get a second opinion. Don’t just take the first thing that is said to you but do a little bit of research. For breast cancer care/prevention/recovery, avoid saturated fats, fried food, fast food, sugary drinks, standard meat, sugary over-the-counter boxed cereals, and alcohol. Carol said: “Unfortunately, in our society, we’re not taught about how to stay balanced as we’re little… This should be something that’s part of standard education -- how to have a balanced life and how to stay in touch with our inner being and how to take care of ourselves.” “It takes a lot of support to get through a health crisis, whether it’s PCOS, infertility, failed IVFs, multiple IVFs or breast cancer... Find a woman or a doctor who really will support your highest self and not diminish or dismiss your concerns. And don’t give up." Thanks for listening! Jen Springer talks to us about thyroid dysfunction and just how easy it is for thyroid related conditions to be completely overlooked by your doctor. Listen in to learn how to be your own advocate, what to read, what labs to request, finding a practitioner that will help you and get back to feeling like YOU again! What are the signs of thyroid dysfunction? Weight gain Hair thinning Always cold, hands and feet are always cold Eyebrows are thinning from outer edge If you stick out your tongue it looks swollen, or has ridges where the teeth press against it Body temperature below 96 degrees Candida, yeast overgrowth Adrenal Fatigue Hormone challenges over the course of time Anxiety and panic attacks Mood changes Blood sugar challenges What Steps Do We Take To Find Out If We’re Having Problems With Our Thyroid? Most doctors will only order a TSH which will not give you a complete picture of the thyroid function. Those patients that request more labs from their family doctor will most likely end up arguing with them, as it is not something they do on a regular basis, nor is it how they’re trained to look at thyroid function. Minimally we need to run a labs on TSH, Free T4 and Free T3. T3 is the hormone that does all the work in the body. Without knowing what Free T3 is doing, we know nothing. It’s also important to look at Reverse T3, Reverse T4, TPO and AB antibodies, to find out if there’s any autoimmunity going on in the body. These are just the basics. Jen talks about other labs she likes to look at to get a complete picture, including sex hormone panel. Look for a Practitioner That Will Help You Ask them for the labs listed above and ask them how they treat thyroid. If they can read those lab results and treat thyroid with nutrition, thyroid supplementation, you will be able to tell if this is a practitioner that can really help you. Functional medical doctors, chiropractors and naturopaths are good options to look at. How to Get Your Thyroid Back to Optimal Health Read good books on the subject. See below for her recommended books. Be careful when you read a lot about the thyroid because it’s very doom and gloom and it can be easy to get down. But it’s easy to treat with nutrition and supplementation. It can be reversed quickly. Gentle and moderate exercise is important to regulate estrogen production to regulate T3 hormone. Stretching and walking to start and once your hormones are under control, bring in some strength building. Low GI Tracker is a great app for keeping track of low GI foods. Don’t eat anything over 55. Jen goes over the various supplements that will help the thyroid function. Thyroid Replacement Some people do well on synthetic thyroid. Natural desiccated thyroid gland is preferred. Any type of thyroid replacement is going to replace what the thyroid would normally make. After taking the natural replacement for a while, the pituitary will know to pick up its production of thyroid hormone in some people. If this happens, those people can cut down. Others can’t. We had a great conversation and covered some very practical information that everyone can use right away.
