Mark spent 20 years as an I-banker before focusing on startup investing in 2012 with Double M capital. Mark has also been an active LP, investing in over 20 managers over the years. On the show, we talked about how he and Jim Andelman (formerly Rincon) decided to join forces to start Bonfire after each running their own VC firms. We also spoke about things like what he looks for in a great manager, his view on the seed market today, and what helped him gain so much early success as a fund manager when he was just getting started.First, a word from our sponsor:Allocate is the digital operating system for investors looking to build and manage world-class private portfolios within venture capital and other technology-focused private assets.Despite the enormous growth of the private markets and the rapid increase of retail demand for private alternatives, investing in the highest quality private assets within the innovation sector remains inaccessible and opaque.Go to allocate.co to apply to be an early-access member and join 500+ active Allocate users.About Mark MullenMark is Co-Founder and Managing Director of Bonfire Ventures. UKRAINE - Update: War, Putin, China & Negotiations for Peace The Not Old Better Show Issues Briefing Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  I'm Paul Vogelzang and as part of our Newsmaker Briefing Interview Series, our guest today is David Andelman.  David Andelman is a returning guest and is here today to give us an up-to-the-minute glimpse into the invasion of Ukraine. David A. Andelman is a veteran foreign correspondent for CNN News, author, and commentator who contributes frequently to CNN on global affairs. A member of the Board of Contributors of USA Today, David Andelman served for more than seven years as Editor & Publisher of World Policy Journal. David Andelman was executive editor of Forbes.com; a domestic and foreign correspondent for The New York Times in New York, Southeast Asia bureau chief, based in Bangkok, and East European bureau chief, based in Belgrade. David Andelman then moved to CBS News where he served for seven years as a Paris correspondent. Andelman followed as a Washington correspondent for CNBC, news editor of Bloomberg News, and Business Editor of the New York Daily News. In the course of his career, he has traveled through and reported from more than 85 countries. Interestingly, David A. Andelman has joined the Center on National Security as a visiting scholar and director of its Red Lines Project.  The project's conception arose from President Barack Obama's failure to enforce a red line in Syria when the dictator Bashar al-Assad used chemical weapons on his own people, killing more than 1,400. Obama's cabinet disagreed strongly with his decision to walk away from the red line without military action to remove al-Assad from power.  David Andelman has that mindset, as does the Red Lines Project, as we try to better understand this very important global security issue, we need to do so right now, especially to understand Ukraine, Putin's mindset, where China is, and more that we'll talk about today. This will be a fascinating interview and we'll talk about the Red Lines Project, cyber-security, the world in a post-pandemic state, Biden, Putin, and China.  You'll love this interview.   Please join me in welcoming to The Not Old Better Show, CNN's David Andelman. My thanks to CNN's David Andelman.   Hopefully, today's show will give you a sense of world events, national security, our place here, and what's going on.  My thanks to the Smithsonian team for all they do to support the show.  My thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience…be safe, and remember let's Talk About Better.  The Not Old Better Show. Until next time, thanks, everybody.

David A. Andelman, longtime columnist for CNN and veteran correspondent for The New York Times and CBS News, astutely combines history and global politics in his new book, A Red Line in the Sand: Diplomacy, Strategy, and the History of Wars That Might Still Happen in an effort to examine the present and draw lessons for the future through the prism of the past. A Red Line in the Sand is the story of barriers – physical, diplomatic, military, and existential – that have proliferated in years across every continent and, in recent years, have reached a toxic apex in numbers and virulence. Andelman asserts that there have never been more red lines at any one point in history than today. While some of this responsibility must fall to America’s president, Donald Trump, his too often quixotic approach to international troubles should not be the only explanation for many of these pernicious divisions. David A. Andelman is a veteran New York Times and CBS News correspondent and executive director of The Red Lines Project. He is an award-winning columnist for CNN and contributor to NBC News/Think. He has served as the editor and publisher of World Policy Journal, as an Executive Editor of Forbes, and news editor at Bloomberg. He is the author of The Peacemakers, The Fourth World War: Diplomacy and Espionage in the Age of Terrorism with the Count de Marenches, and A Shattered Peace: Versailles, 1919 and the Price We Pay Today. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He lives in Canadensis, Pennsylvania and Paris, France. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/steve-richards/support

History is replete with leaders drawing real or metaphorical lines in the sand, challenging opponents to cross only if they dare. David Andelman, an American journalist and author, believes that one way to understand global risks and challenges is to explore the nexus of red lines that define global politics.  Indeed, Andelman—in this episode of New Thinking for a New World and in his recent book A Red Line in the Sand: Diplomacy, Strategy, and the History of Wars That Might Still Happen—argues that never before have global affairs been so entangled by red lines. Moreover, he says that Donald Trump made everything worse. Can we recover without a catastrophe?

We all love instructions. We all love fading. But, when the two go together, do we create a treatment better than the sum of its parts? Let’s take a trip through the literature and discuss the ins and outs of instructional fading together, shall we?

I know of at least two things that Dylan Ratigan and I have in common. We both follow Piers Morgan and Howard Stern on Twitter, demonstrating that we share a taste for both the refined and unrefined. And we’re both usually working at 4 p.m. daily, which shows neither of us is quite smart enough to game the system — yet. Oh, wait! Three things! We both probably never want to ride another bus again the rest of our lives. DYLAN RATIGAN audio excerpt: "I ultimately believe that the degree of stress we're experiencing, and all of this nastiness, is an indication of how close we are to solutions. I believe the uncomfortableness that we're all experiencing as a result of the horrors on earth now... are an incredible pressure to compel us to solve a lot of these problems over the next 10 years."  Ratigan, host of the daily MSNBC newshour at 4 p.m. known colloquially as “The Dylan Ratigan Show,” hit the road for three days a month, December through March, in a customized Trailways bus. The "Steel on Wheels" tour – which wraps this week with a three-day energy summit from Wednesday, March 30-Friday, April 1, 2011 in Stillwater, Oklahoma -- focused on four major themes: The Spirit Of America, Innovation, The Building Of Our Nation, and The Future Of America's New Generations. The goal of the tour was to give voice to the average American’s possible solutions to some of this country’s most pressing challenges and issues. Of course, in the midst of the tour, the entire world’s focus skidded out of its lane as a result of civil war in the Middle East and the combination tsunami/earthquake/nuclear plant calamity in Japan. But one thing is for sure, as you’ll hear in this interview: Dylan Ratigan is nowhere near running out of hot topics to discuss. (You can catch up on any interviews you missed by going to MrMedia.com and searching “Warehouse 13.”) Season two of the series has been a wild ride as we met former Warehouse agents—including a female H.G. Wells—gained details of Pete’s alcohol addiction, Myka’s high school insecurities with men, Artie’s checkered past, Claudia’s raging hormones, discovered that Warehouse 13 and Eureka exist in the same timeline, learned more about the creepy and elusive “Regents” who rule America’s Warehouse system, and even met the always on-call Warehouse doc, former Bionic Woman Lindsay Wagner. Which leads to this week’s episode, the first of a two-part season finale. Someone is going to die —does that have anything to do with Lindsay Wagner returning to aid Mrs. Frederic when she becomes ill with a strange, life threatening illness? (I wonder if that Louis C.K. rumor started earlier in this intro might have something to do with it?) Warehouse 13 airs exclusively on SyFy every Tuesday night at 9 p.m. If you’re not watching—well, what could possibly be more important? For Will Eisner Week 2016, Derek talks with Eisner's authorized biographer, Bob Andelman. The second edition of his book, Will Eisner: A Spirited Life, was released last summer by TwoMorrows Publishing, expanding significantly on the 2005 edition in a deluxe, full-color volume. In the conversation, Bob discusses the genesis of the project and how he came to meet Eisner. He also shares several of his most memorable moments working with the legend, as well as some of the challenges in writing the biography. This recent deluxe edition, in particular, allowed him to expand his initial work and offer a more complete picture of the man. Derek talks with Bob about how the addition of brand new interviews, as well as archival material and legal documentation not available at the time of his first edition, rounds out the biography and makes Will Eisner more fully human and less of an abstracted icon. They also discuss the various stages of Eisner's life and the different tones he struck in his comics, such as the autobiographical reflections found in To the Heart of the Storm, the sentimentality of Invisible People, the stark naturalism underlying Dropsie Avenue, the polemical turn of The Plot, and the innovative adventure that defined The Spirit newspaper inserts. All in all, you will find in this episode a spirited conversation -- sorry for the predictable pun -- with a writer and pop cultural critic that was a long time in coming.
