Asia is leading the world when it comes to semiconductors, solar panels, wind turbines, and other technologies critical for the future. In a time when several US states are seeking to ban the sale of cultivated meat, Asia seems to be leaning into the technology, and one of the most mature companies in the space there is Avant Meats.  Founded in Hong Kong in 2018 and having raised about $15 million USD to date, Avant Meats is focused on making a dent in Asian seafood demand. In this episode, Avant founder and CEO Carrie Chan discusses why her focus is seafood, what scale she's at and where she hopes to soon go, and how long she thinks it will be before cultivated fish might reach one percent market share in Asia.  As you'll hear in this conversation, Avant Meats is already animal component-free in its feedstock for its fish cells, and it's cultivating inside a 250L bioreactor to generate the material for its public tastings. Now headquartered in Singapore, the company intends to grow there and eventually branch throughout Asia, a project for which it's currently fundraising. Discussed in this episode This episode is the seventh in our multi-part podcast series on cultivated meat. The previous six episodes include BlueNalu, Eat Just, Fork & Good, Mosa Meat, New Harvest, and Aleph Farms. China alone consumers 65 million tons of seafood annually.  Carrie points to how China rapidly transformed the small fishing village of Shenzhen into a metropolis, and what relevance this has for cultivated meat scaling. More about Carrie Chan Carrie Chan is the co-founder and CEO of Avant Meats. She's a seasoned business executive with a passion for the environment, particularly the impact of our food supply on the planet. With experiences in strategy and general management, she also managed major greenfield Capex projects from conception to revenue-generating operations. She is a Bloomberg New Economy Catalyst 2022 and holds an MBA from INSEAD. Carrie co-founded Avant with Dr Mario Chin in 2018 in Hong Kong, the first cultivated fish company in Asia, and expanded to Singapore in 2021. Avant's technology offers a system to produce nutritious, tasty fish and functional proteins directly from fish cells at economically viable costs. The group's end-to-end technology platform also allows continuous new product development from scratch to production.   Avant aims to be a global leader in producing traceable and sustainably cultivated proteins in a fully contained environment for food, skincare, and functional applications. Avant now has a presence in Singapore and Greater China. Avant has also been awarded Technology Pioneer and Global Innovator by the World Economic Forum and featured in Reuters, Financial Times, TIME, Forbes, The Telegraph, South China Morning Post, and CCTV. Benevolent cyborgs. Not a phrase you hear often these days. With all the hand-wringing and media fear-mongering about AI and new technologies, we seem to have lost the bigger vision of how technology can improve our lives. That's why today, I'm speaking with Dr. Cori Lathan, a techno-optimist who believes technology can be used to build empathy and connection. Today we discuss how Star Wars and a very creative 2nd grade teacher sparked her journey into innovation and invention, how technology is being used to build empathy and connection, why empathy makes a better design team, and the future of human-machine interaction. To access the episode transcript, please click on the episode title at www.TheEmpathyEdge.com Key Takeaways:Technology can be a tool to help children achieve developmental milestones and build empathy. The media will give the negative side of AI and technology because it gets better views and clicks. But great things are happening with technology that is helping to create a beautiful future. In this episode, we sit with Chrissa McFarlane, the creator of Patientory. Chrissa joins the show to discuss the backstory behind her patient care app. With a background in emergent health, including managing a telemedicine company and consulting for pharma and EMRs, Chrissa was driven to create Patientory from the pain point of building the insurance side of the telemedicine company, as there was not a lot of consumer focus when it came to patient records. Patientory was born from the need for an easier, more organized system for patient records, and it revolutionized the healthcare industry by connecting patients with doctors over an app.   The conversation also delves into the need for consumer-friendly access to medical records, highlighting the difficulty that parents faced when trying to access their child's medical records through traditional methods. Patientory solves this problem by providing a digital health data wallet that allows users to access and manage their medical records from anywhere, making it easier for patients to keep track of their health data and stay on top of their healthcare needs.   What sets Patientory apart is its incorporation of blockchain and cryptocurrency, which allows patients to have control over their health data and potentially monetize it through a marketplace ecosystem. Additionally, Patientory provides rewards for users who take steps to improve their health, such as walking a certain number of steps. These rewards can come in the form of a crypto token, NFTs, or other forms of incentives, incentivizing users to stay active and engaged in their healthcare.   If your company is looking to scale its AI initiatives, head over to Tesoro AI (www.tesoroai.com). Scott is a longtime travel industry data guru, having served in senior executive roles at United, Adara, and Orbitz. He was instrumental in the founding of Orbitz and is CRO at Journera, which has been recognized as one of the World's “10 Most Innovative Travel Companies“ by Fast Company and a “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. Participating companies include United, American, Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, IHG, and many others. On this episode of Destination on the Left, I talk with Scott Garner, Chief Revenue Officer for Jounera, about the brand's unique data collaboration model that sees hotels, destinations, and airlines working together. He describes how the shared data helps marketers to create a 360-degree view of the travelers' journey, identify potential customers and anticipate their needs seamlessly. What You Will Learn in this Episode: How Journera facilitates seamless travel experiences and how they got the six big founding partners on board Why competing travel brands come together and share data to learn how the consumer is moving through the planning and purchase stage of travel and arrival How to focus on the areas of common interest and common benefit when creating a partnership How to foster communication and collaboration in the travel industry while still allowing brands to retain their uniqueness What Journera does with the data to benefit and provide those solutions for their clients The importance of data in digital marketing in the travel industry What historical data tells you a lot about a person's future behavior and how that helps marketers in the travel and tourism industry Collaborating with Shared Data Journera was founded to take advantage of the insights that the travel and tourism industry can take from sharing data to make the visitor journey as seamless as possible. Scott talks about why it's so important to bring together travel companies, even companies that are competitors, for the common good, which is to make the travel experience better. Travel involves piecing together many components, and you need companies, from airlines to car rental agencies, to enhance the traveler experience, and sharing data is the way to do that. Retaining Uniqueness There are times when Journera partners compete fiercely against one another, but there are also times when they're stronger and need to collaborate and work together to create more efficient marketing solutions. Scott describes how he and his team create a win-win scenario while also being mindful that there are some parts of that relationship that have to be fenced off. The critical thing is to focus on the areas where cooperating benefits everybody involved, especially the consumer. Using Data to Move Forward At the core of what Journera does is assess data and then distill the findings to make them more usable in a marketing context. Scott describes how the team integrates individual partners' data into their broader digital ecosystem, enabling marketers to target their potential visitors with greater precision. He outlines how data drives intelligence, which in turn helps DMOs make sound investment decisions to put themselves in the best position to move forward with confidence. Odun Eweniyi (COO & Co-Founder at PiggyVest) joins me on Tech Talks Daily to discuss how she's revolutionizing the savings & investments culture amongst young Nigerians. She is also a Forbes Africa 30 under 30 Technology Pioneer awardee. Based in Nigeria, PiggyVest is West Africa's first digital savings and micro-investment app with a focus on restoring trust and democratising financial services for Gen Zs & millennials. They've built a strong customer base of over 3.5 million users since launching in 2016 and in 2021 alone, the platform paid out over $582 million to its users. PiggyVest's growth is also especially impressive when you consider its last fundraise was a $1.1mn seed round in 2018. Why do savings & investments in Nigeria need change? There are very few countries in the world where savings are more of a necessity than Nigeria. Due to the severe lack of credit options, Nigerians are well-accustomed to paying for goods and services upfront, forcing them to rely heavily on their savings. However, with excessive bank charges and poor interest rates further eroded by high inflation, they are heavily disincentivized to save with traditional financial institutions, which often leave them with less money than their original deposits. Equally, the barriers to boosting wealth creation through investments are just as daunting. The average entry point to invest with formal financial institutions stands at 10,000 Naira, which is 8% of the average Nigerian's annual income. We discuss how technology is restoring trust and democratizing financial services for Gen Zs & millennials in Nigeria. I also learn more about how technology and innovation is sweeping across Africa.

Scientist, entrepreneur, and executive Thomas Chalberg, PhD, has developed or funded companies that have advanced complex gene therapy technology, a novel anesthesia delivery system, and a lens that helps slow myopia progression in kids. And that's just the start.A leader in gene therapy development who is recognized by the World Economic Forum as a Technology Pioneer, Dr. Chalberg cofounded Avalanche Biotechnologies, which is now Adverum Biotechnologies. There, he built the Avalanche Ocular BioFactory, an adeno-associated virus (AAV)–based, proprietary, next-generation platform for the discovery and development of gene therapy vectors for ophthalmology. While much of his career has centered on gene therapy, one of his more recent ventures, SightGlass Vision, falls on the opposite end of the spectrum. The company has developed a novel spectacle lens design that helps slow myopia progression. Its foundation stems from research by the University of Washington, which found that high retinal contrast signaling leads to high myopia and that modifying that signaling could slow myopia progression.Dr. Chalberg also is founder and managing director of Polymerase Capital; founder and managing director of iRenix Medical, which developed a novel anesthesia delivery system used in conjunction with intravitreal injections; director of Chameleon Biosciences, a gene therapy–focused startup; and founder and CEO of Genascence Corp., a gene therapy startup developing products for musculoskeletal disease. In between all this activity, Dr. Chalberg caught up with Firas Rahhal, MD, to talk about—what else?—gene therapy, along with retinal disease and his history in the anti-VEGF market.Listen to the podcast today to hear: About Dr. Chalberg's work at Genentech during Lucentis' launch and early commercialization. The philosophy behind iRenix Medical's anesthesia delivery system, which administers a cooling anesthesia via an automated injector. His thoughts on the safety and effectiveness of gene therapy and gene editing for ophthalmic indications and how he sees it evolving over the next several years. How can the food industry innovate to meet the demands and challenges it's facing, and do so in an efficient way? The answer, according to Tetra Pak: Partnerships, partnerships, and more partnerships. There are all kinds of issues that need to be tackled, not least the question of sustainability. In this episode of the Food Matters Live Podcast, we shine a light on a small company that says it's found a solution to a big problem, and how it's working with a big company to get that solution out into the world. EnginZyme takes waste materials from food processing and uses enzymes to transform that material into useful, sustainable, and natural added-value products. The company says its method requires less energy and leads to far less waste than conventional methods. Join our complimentary webinar:  Climate optimism – shifting the narrative on climate change Featuring Anne Therese Gennari in partnership with Tetra Pak But it is expensive work and EnginZyme isn't primarily a food company. That's where Tetra Pak comes in. It too is concerned with increasing sustainability and reducing waste in food processing. By working together and combining EnginZyme's biomanufacturing innovation together with Tetra Pak's food expertise, could we be on the cusp of a transformation in the way food is processed? This week continuing our eco disruptor interviews, I interview Mark Herrema. Did you ever believe we might be able to stop using plastic and replace it with something that won't harm people and planet? Well, it may just be possible with AirCarbon and I'm very excited to see where this goes. Mark Herrema is the co-founder and CEO of Newlight Technologies. In 2003, Mark co-founded Newlight with a vision of using greenhouse gas as a resource to make high-performance sustainable materials. After a decade of research, Mark and his team developed a technology that uses a natural process found in the ocean to make a material called AirCarbon. AirCarbon is a meltable energy storage molecule made in almost all known living things that are strong, meltable, and ocean-degradable. AirCarbon is now being used to replace plastic in single-use food ware, fashion products, and a variety of other applications. Newlight has been honoured to receive recognition as “Biomaterial of the Year” by the Nova Institute, “Innovation of the Year” by Popular Science, and “Technology Pioneer” by the World Economic Forum. In 2016, Newlight was awarded the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Mark graduated magna cum laude from Princeton University and has since garnered over 15 years of expertise in process engineering, polymer functionalization, and strategic business development. I hope you enjoy this discovery as much as I have, hearing Mark's story and the development of something truly disruptive in the plastics space. The GPO team invests in tech-driven, founder-led, North American companies that can harness Asia-Pacific public capital markets to achieve growth, business expansion, and market leadership. Historically, venture capital succeeded by investing early in companies that later went public to access growth capital, establish market leadership and provide ROI. Over the past twenty years, the U.S. IPO market has shifted focus to mega-cap listings.  Mid-sized companies now rarely attract growth capital through U.S. public offerings. Venture capital time horizons have elongated to over ten years and M&A and private equity are often the only strategic outcomes, stunting opportunities for companies to realize their full potential. Meanwhile, Asia-Pacific economies and investment capital are rapidly expanding. There is a significant demand in Asia-Pacific to invest in high-growth technology companies that can expand globally and list on an APAC exchange.  Jeff is an investor, serial entrepreneur, and inventor with experience scaling technology-enabled international businesses.   Jeff began his career as a Management Consultant at Ernst & Young's Technology Practice, living on the road, advising Global 1000 financial institutions and exchanges. 53. How to Propel Your Credibility into an Upward Spiral

Monetization Nation Podcast

People often talk about spirals that descend downwards, but we often forget that spirals can go upwards too. In today's episode, James Clarke and I talk about some of the ways to propel our credibility into an upward spiral. James Clarke is the managing partner of Clarke Capital Partners. Early in his career, James founded and led a Utah-based online retailer named CLEARLINK with more than 2,000 employees. He's earned some prestigious awards. For example, the Utah State Bar named James as the "Technology Pioneer of the Year" and BusinessQ Magazine named him as one of their “10 Coolest Entrepreneurs”. He is also the Governor-appointed Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees at Utah Valley University. How Credibility Can Work Like an Upward Spiral Credibility spirals can start in a small situation with low stakes. Maybe it's a project that is due. When someone comes through for us in that situation, and they do what they say they are going to do, we tend to give them more trust. Then we'll ask them to do something with a little higher stakes. When they prove they can do that they earn even more trust. That same process repeats in an upward spiral of responsibility and trust.  James shared an example of how he saw this upward credibility spiral happen with his business partner. They knew each other in school, and as they built their relationship, that trust grew. It spiraled throughout the years, and now they have an implicit trust with one another, trusting everything about each other. Likability, Trust, and Reliability  “When we like people we want to work with them, when we trust them we want to work with them, and then the last part is about the nuts and bolts of what we do as a business.” -James Clarke A mentor of James' taught him about the three things that make people want to work with each other... if we like the person, trust the person, and know that they'll make us money. Those last two elements are obviously elements of credibility. It is important for us to instill that trust in our associates, and we do that by being reliable and ethical. There are people we like that we don't want to do business with and it's often because we don't trust them and know they aren't reliable. We need to become the kind of people that we want to work with. We must do what we say we're going to do, be honest at all times, especially when it's hard, and take responsibility when things go wrong. Education--Connections and Credibility James did the Owner/President Management (OPM) program at Harvard Business School. He spent two years in the program and built some of the best relationships he's ever built in his life there, working with incredible people, a handful of whom were already billionaires. It was his first experience and exposure to great business professionals.  The program didn't grant a master's degree, but it gave James wonderful connections and the credibility that comes with saying he went to Harvard. James realized that a master's degree would give him even more credibility, so he decided to go to Oxford. This is another school that provides instant credibility. Why do these schools provide so much credibility to graduates? One reason may be that they have rigorous application and interview processes, and the programs themselves are rigorous. Graduates from these schools are considered intelligent and hard working.  In addition, most people believe in a traditional education like this. Society generally supports the idea that the best way to become educated is to attend a university, and one of these prestigious universities will give us an even more prestigious education. Wherever we are in the process of our education, receiving higher education, if that is an option, maybe something to consider because it may give us greater credibility. “Upon the subject of education… I can only say that I view it as the most important subject which we as a people may be engaged in.” -Abraham Lincoln Love We don't generally think about love as a part of business, but there are a couple of concepts related to love that build credibility. For example, we don't care what someone has to say until we know that they care about us and what we're doing. This also plays into the credibility spiral. When someone really loves us, we are open to them giving us good advice, and we'll apply their advice more often. When their advice works in our lives, they have more credibility in our eyes, and we listen to their next advice more, and the credibility just keeps building. James has hired thousands of employees, and he's seen this play out with many of them. If it doesn't work out with an employee, it's usually for one of two reasons. The first reason, which is very rare, is that they just don't get it. They don't have the mental capacity, or they don't have what it takes to understand.  The second reason is that they just don't care. They just don't love what they're doing, so they don't care about their job or the people they're working with. Unfortunately, when this is the situation, we can feel it in every part of what they're involved in. This is why it is important to go into fields that we love and work with people we love. We will do better work, give better advice, and rise in our credibility spiral with those around us. “Nobody cares how much you know until they know how much you care.” -Theodore Roosevelt, 26th president of the United States Another Angle of Love--Passion-Marketing There is another angle of love that we can relate to marketing, which is passion-marketing. This is finding what customers love and connecting with them through those top-level passions. At PetIQ, where James worked for about 10 years, they didn't focus on their products in their marketing. Instead, they focused on what their customers are passionate about their pets. They were no longer pet owners, they were pet parents. For many of their customers, their pets are like their children, so they used that passion to market to their customers. James has done this kind of thing in other organizations as well. In healthcare, for example, James can't imagine anything nobler than trying to save people's lives, so they talk about helping cure highly infectious diseases, which is something that people can be highly passionate about.  Losing Credibility  When James was selling CLEARLINK, he started doing business with a good friend of his. Six months into this service, James was billed for the equivalent of five years of fees in one single quarter. He knew something was wrong but didn't know what. James immediately brought it to the attention of his friend, who humbly apologized and said he would take care of it.  James thought the issue was a mistake that had been completely resolved and continued to work with the friend, but he soon learned that the same thing had happened to others that James had referred to as his friend. They had all been overbilled and not by small amounts but by hundreds of thousands of dollars. That relationship ended before it really began. Fast forward to today that individual has now been sentenced and is headed to federal prison. We need to be sure we always strive to do what we say we're going to do so we increase instead of destroying our credibility. “Once you lose your credibility, you can never restore it.” -Reinhold Messner, Italian mountaineer, explorer, and author Who is the most credible person in your life and why? James and his aunt both had a very similar upbringing. They came from middle-class families, working on their family's farms. James' aunt built her own global business named Diet Center and was very successful. She was also very generous, always telling James he could borrow her very nice car, or asking him how she could help his school. She was a great example of James being successful and giving back, and he thought, “If she could do it then I can do it.” She and her husband were truly authentic and credible. They got behind different causes, and they really helped build up the community. James thinks of her as the most credible person in his life because she was very successful and generous. Key Takeaways Thank you so much James for sharing your stories and knowledge with us today. Here are some of my key takeaways from this episode: Start growing our credibility spirals by doing what we say we are going to do and proving we can be trusted in low-stake situations, then building toward being trusted in higher-stakes situations. Be honest and quickly take responsibility when things go wrong. Education can really boost our credibility. Consider getting more relevant education or training if we haven't already. Share love to show people that we truly care about them and what they love to further build our credibility. Go into fields we love to ensure that we care about what we're doing and increase our chance of success. Use passion marketing to connect with the things our customers are most passionate about. When we are successful, be generous with that success to help others. Anagog is the developer of JedAI - a patented edge-AI technology that solves the conflicting dilemma of deeply understanding your customers behaviour, create moments of surprise and delight, all without harming their privacy. This inspired me, and hence I invited Ofer to my podcast. We explore the ever growing need for better experiences and the problems this creates around our privacy: everything we do is tracked and stored somewhere without being in control of it. We discuss the technology answers to this so that we can have the best of all worlds: Better experiences, more surprise and delight, without sharing anything. We also dig into how remarkable products often are the result of many pivots – and what leaders need to do different in order to succeed. Here are some of his quotes:‘Everybody trying to understand us, based on our online or digital life. And while 80% of the time we're actually spending in the real world. And we have full life in the real world. But it looks like the new technology is only trying to focus on what we are doing online. It looks like everybody in the attempt of trying to understand us in a more personal way. They forgot that we have private Life.We all feel a little bit uncomfortable with the question: “what exactly does Google know about me, or Apple, or Facebook? And at some point, some of us actually gave up.We are actually trying to roll it back and to say, “guys, there is an option that only our phone will know everything about you, and it will never leave your phone.” So, in a way, we try to change everything upside down.’During this interview, you will learn four things:That a major opportunity to truly understand your ideal customer is found in understanding what they do ‘off-line’Why transformation starts when we ask ourselves propelling questions that combine both a bold aspiration with a significant constraintHow we can make our solutions memorable by focusing less on fixing gaps, and more on creating peaks i.e. moments of surprise and delight. That opportunity starts when you manage to do something which is very difficult i.e. when others are not able to do that. Karan walks us through the founding story of Ginger.  The business began as a tech platform that would support health systems, using smart phones to measure mental health.  At that time, and even still today, qualitative assessments make up the bulk of how we measure mental wellbeing. What is Ginger today? Over the years, Ginger has evolved into an on-demand mental health system.  You can think of it as a virtual clinic for your mental health.  Members have access to a team of coaches, therapists and psychiatrists.  This multi-functional care team allows Ginger to deliver assistance to their members in under 60 seconds, any time on any day in all 50 states and in 25 countries. Ginger has partnered with employers to provide mental health care access to half a million people to date.  These employers include numerous business in many industries including tech companies, airlines, unions and more. How do people find Ginger?  Who can use it? Entry points onto the Ginger platform include: Employers Health plans (Optum, Aetna, Anthem, Kaiser, and others) for in-network covered care Karan explained that Ginger’s definition of “mental health” is far wider than what people normally think of.  It’s not just psychiatry, but includes sub-clinical problems, depression, anxiety, and a number of other symptoms.  For example, someone going through cancer treatment, may not have an elevated PHQ-9 score, but they likely require some additional emotional support, which is where Ginger comes in. What is the opportunity for Companies like Ginger in the mental health space? Fundamentally, the mental health space is broken.  There is a massive supply and demand imbalance.  Demand is going up.  Supply isn’t keeping up.  Ginger provides a set of interventions as a ‘virtual clinic’ that consists of talking to a coach, to a therapist, to a psychiatrist, and provides access to a library of helpful content. In the long run, Karan believes the great opportunity centers around preventative mental health.  The ability to catch people early, before they have a crisis, leveraging technology, will allow Ginger to provide a higher level of care than what has traditionally been achievable, without technology. Where can aspiring entrepreneurs go after in the mental health space now? Karan explains that we need as many people as we can to be getting into this space, it’s a massive opportunity.  The supply and demand imbalance mean the current mental health crisis isn’t going away any time soon.  We need integrated preventative approaches as well as ways to help people far earlier (before crisis occurs) in a more holistic way. From the lights we had on unnecessarily, to the room being too cold, to not carpooling to work, Karl wasted no time rattling off what we could be doing better. And the funny thing is, these are such easy fixes to implement. That's the problem with the status quo. Nobody cares. It gets to a point where it doesn't even cross your mind there's a better way to do things. Karl is the founder and CEO of the Neutral Group. To put what they do in layman's terms, Karl and his team work with companies to make their entire supply chain eco-friendly and energy efficient. Since founding his first start-up in 1990, which was sold to Microsoft in 1995, Karl has overseen the growth of technology companies resulting in three personal trade sale exits, two trade sale exits on behalf of external investors, and the leadership and preparation of two companies for IPO. Karl has 20 years international experience of managing technology businesses and was recognized by the World Economic Forum in 2004, as a Technology Pioneer.” He was voted “Innovator of the Year 2011” by the Middle East LOG magazine. Karl holds an MBA from Henley Management College, a B.Eng.(Hons) Industrial Engineering from the University of Hertfordshire, and is an Adjunct Lecturer at the Masdar Institute in Abu Dhabi. As far as "big business" experience goes, Karl is as credible and authoritative as they come. Which is why, when he talks about the impact businesses have on the environment and what we can do about it, people listen. I, for one, thoroughly enjoyed my conversation with him. This is Capitalism: CEO Stories

Ray Hoffman interviews Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud. You might say there’s electricity in her blood. Long before her reputation was established as one of the world’s foremost experts on power storage, her father, Wolfgang Lampe, was world-renowned for building power stations and power transmission lines. After earning her doctorate in her native Sweden, Christina came to the U.S. and started her first company, Boston-Power, in 2006. In 2012, she and three of her former colleagues, one of whom is her husband, started Cadenza Innovation. It’s a Connecticut-based firm, which has developed a fireproof lithium-ion battery. It can be snapped together like LEGO® bricks to store virtually infinite amounts of power and sold cheaply. In 2018, this Cadenza Innovation story turned into a fast-moving one, which is why, after one long interview with Christina Lampe-Önnerud, Ray had to go back for a major update just six months later!   Key Takeaways: [:21] Ray Hoffman introduces Dr. Christina Lampe-Önnerud. [1:22] A lot has happened. Cadenza Innovations has gone from being a technical promise, through the demonstration at Fiat Chrysler earlier this year, into having initiated the program with New York State and the New York Power Authority (NYPA), the biggest public utility in the United States coming into New York City. [1:48] Cadenza Innovation is constructing a public demonstration of what the Cadenza technology can do for the United States, with the specifics of the New York City grid. That’s going live in the summer. The stakeholders have all started their work. [2:12] The Fiat Chrysler demonstration came from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), which recognized the Cadenza opportunity as associated with the lowest cost, highest safety, and highest energy density per volume. [2:26] Fiat Chrysler then signed up to be the champion. The demonstration happened in Q1 2018, which was on the heels of an over-three-year-long program with lots of third-party testing and validation, under the supervision of Fiat Chrysler, then being incorporated into the Fiat 500E. The test was run in Los Angeles. [2:58] Cadenza Innovation demonstrated the Cadenza cell could go in as a retrofit. They demonstrated blocks that stack like LEGO® bricks. They demonstrated very aggressive goals set out by the U.S. DOE. The battery industry had said they could not do it but Cadenza met the goals, which included targets for range, safety, and cost. [3:27] The cost is incredibly interesting because Cadenza is using supply chain assets, today. [3:37] In June, Cadenza was given funding by NY State to do this clean energy storage demonstration project in White Plains, NY. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud tells how this happened. New York State, through NYSERDA, invited Cadenza to be part of an evaluation where they looked at multiple ways to meet energy efficiency. [4:21] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud explains the old system of centralized power plants, distribution, and deployment. She outlines the future course of power distribution with multiple points of power generation paired with storage, almost like the internet where you trade energy where it’s most efficient. [5:02] The battery and storage are critical for that arbitrage. Batteries significantly also replace climate change threats. New York looked at policy, incentives, and technology. Cadenza scored highly in the technology category so they were invited to give a demonstration. [5:29] The demonstration will be hooked up to the NYPA’s headquarters in White Plains. It will be in a public space next to a bus stop. There is a potential for the demonstration to include generating data to show peak shifting in real-time and peak savings, including the reduction of CO2 and other climate gases. [6:20] The state has designated a pad outside the building, roughly the size of a storage container with air conditioning and the hand-off between the battery and the grid. The battery takes up a small area. The container is partly to prevent battery theft. [7:28] The demonstration will be for at least three months. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud is very hopeful that NYPA will pick up more units very quickly and deploy the technology. [7:51] Cadenza has received funding in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and New York. The team has only 30 people. They have received support from the battery industry ecosystem. Cadenza serves as a demonstration that new technology is not dangerous. It has moved the needle a little bit into acceptance, also thanks to low pricing. [8:42] Cadenza is interested in playing in multiple states but as engineers, they work hardest on execution, to make sure every demonstration is successful. Cadenza technology is less dangerous than legacy systems. [9:04] Another success point in the past six months is that Cadenza has engaged with the Department of Defense (DOD), who have done their best to blow up the technology. The standard industry test, thermal runaway, did not happen with the Cadenza cells. That garnered quite a bit of interest and a lot of curiosity. The results are remarkable. [10:30] The jelly roll cell technology of encased cells prevents thermal cascades as a short will shut down the cell. The DOD warned them “We’re going to blow up your cell.” The engineers replied “Thank you, ... but we don’t think it will.” It didn’t blow up. [11:37] In 2012, when Dr. Lampe-Önnerud founded Cadenza Innovation, she was very committed to the tripod of safety, cost, and performance. Nobody thought it was possible. She notes the technical achievement of her team and also points out the business innovation of putting together a very safe and collaborative system to succeed. [12:28] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud elaborates on the recent news that China’s Shenzhen BAK Power Battery and Cadenza Innovation have announced that they will co-manufacture lithium-ion cells and modules based on Cadenza Innovation’s supercell architecture. BAK is already one of the biggest suppliers of jelly rolls in China. [13:48] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud tells how lithium-ion jelly roll technology improves on the earlier lithium-ion technology. The jelly roll is easy to manufacture and you can have it manufactured locally, close to point of use, so your battery factory only needs to do final assembly. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud talks of BAK’s success from startup to a major manufacturer. [15:14] Cadenza was also honored in Tianjin, China, by the World Economic Forum as a 2018 Technology Pioneer. Four of the team had already been acknowledged for the same award in 2010 for a different technology. The four, including Dr. Lampe-Önnerud, have been working together for 20 years. [16:05] Boston-Power innovated in the portable power arena at a time when the industry had a lot of safety issues. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud had been at Arthur D. Little (ADL) and the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) had engaged ADL as an independent advisor on how to treat these 20 million recalled batteries. [16:44] Boston-Power stepped up the game by cleaning up some of the safety idiosyncrasies and pioneered cleaning up some of the greenhouse gases. Boston-Power was a green company before it was cool to be green. They fueled the paradigm where the battery had to last the life of the laptop. [17:06] Boston-Power also pioneered the paradigm of fast charging. Their battery was capable of the longest run-time and also charged to 80% capacity in 30 minutes, which was unheard of in 2005. [17:22] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud knew with a little group — 10 people out of her garage — a little bit of confidence, and a lot of friends, they could become a player. [17:36] The World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer Award is a recognition from global industry leaders, including Fortune 50 companies in the forum, and heads of states. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud had previously been recognized as a pioneer entrepreneur. [18:08] As a tech pioneer, you get invited to share a story or vision, which can become part of the content for the World Economic Forum agenda. As a two-time winner, Dr. Lampe-Önnerud has also been invited and has accepted to be a co-chair for The Future of Energy Committee to help drive the discussion. [18:29] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud also was in Nice recently to address the International Energy and Power Supply Conference (Batteries 2018) on The Role of Energy Storage in the New Economy Paradigm. Two macro-trends she covered are the rate of technological change and climate change. [19:46] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud worked with the Club de Madrid and the United Nations from 2009 to 2011, and with Condoleezza Rice and the President of the European Council to try to facilitate a data-driven global agenda. They developed a model for watching temperatures and predicting problems. The model has been a good estimate. [20:55] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud sees hesitation around global collaboration. You have to be rather stubborn that you want to keep the door open. It takes a lot of positive force. [21:47] Since starting Boston-Power in 2004, Dr. Lampe-Önnerud has learned that it was not as hard as she imagined it would be to raise capital. She didn’t have time for a process, she just needed investors immediately. Over the years, she raised almost $360 million and the company had a chance to grow. [22:37] With Cadenza Innovation, Dr. Lampe-Önnerud is more knowledgeable and she invented a new security that aligns investors and the management team for a ‘long play.’ She is determined to try to stay courageous for global markets. She is trying to stay very true to doing good and doing well, at the same time. [22:59] With Dr. Lampe-Önnerud’s new investment security, there is no artificial driver for the investor to get out. The intent is not to flip the company in two years. If they sold it, it would be for a remarkable opportunity. [23:13] The strategy is actually to deploy great technology into a vacuum that is huge. And with that, they will do a ton of good, and make a lot of money in it, as well. [23:26] It is very difficult to make transformations within a year or two. Most policies call for four years or less of effort, which is still too short. Dr. Lampe-Önnerud says it is basic to commit to something that is over 10 years. 10 years is very fast for technology shifts. [23:49] Dr. Lampe-Önnerud got investors to sign on from the beginning. ‘If you are a hard-core environmentalist, be a hard-core industrialist. Figure out technology that can outcompete the things that are making the environment bad, and then you can move at scale.’ Mark Herrema is the Co-Founder and CEO of Newlight Technologies, an advanced biotechnology company using carbon capture to produce high-performance polymers that replace oil-based materials. Newlight was founded on the idea that carbon could be used as a resource, and today it operates the world’s first commercial-scale greenhouse gas-to-AirCarbon manufacturing facilities, producing bioplastics used in furniture, electronics, packaging and a range of other products. Newlight has been named Innovation of the Year by Popular Science, 2015 Technology Pioneer by the World Economic Forum, and 2014 Company of the Year by CleanTech OC. Today, Mark joins Ross and Christophe to share the inspiration behind Newlight Technologies and how it rose to the challenge of competing with traditional plastics in terms of price and performance. Mark discusses Newlight’s role in transforming the plastics industry and his long-term vision of a licensing model that inspires growth in the areas of bioplastic products and production. They discuss how emerging carbon capture techniques could benefit Newlight and how Nori might change the terms of the climate change debate by monetizing carbon removal. Listen in for Mark’s insight on altruism, incentives and how businesses like Newlight should think about subsidies.   Key Takeaways   [0:58] Mark’s inspiration for Newlight Technologies Reading about calculation of methane emissions made climate change real Good for environment, economy to use carbon as resource   [4:23] Mark’s take on altruism vs. incentives Must harness market forces to move at necessary speed, scale   [5:31] Newlight Technologies’ founding challenge Develop materials that compete on price, performance   [6:59] Newlight’s role in transforming the plastics industry Replace plastics with bioplastics (biodegradable, don’t require fossil fuels) Reach point where oil/gas chooses to build air carbon plant for profitability   [11:24] Newlight’s sources of methane and CO2 Farm digesters, landfills and flares Power, ethanol plants   [15:54] Newlight’s cradle-to-grave carbon accounting Ran two third-party LCAs to verify reduction of carbon footprint Must use renewable power to make CO2 capture carbon neutral   [19:40] The benefits of polymers used by Newlight Repeating unit structure produced in all living things Natural molecule biocompatible with human body (healthier)   [22:11] Mark’s big vision for Newlight Technologies Licensing model to replace plastics with bioplastics Build reference plants to demonstrate possibilities Inspire imagination with products like cell phone cases   [25:01] How carbon capture techniques would benefit Newlight Run process from anywhere on globe Scale up in short time frame   [32:09] Nori’s role in creating a carbon offset market Simplify process, open-source on blockchain Carbon removal credits create universal price Monetization changes terms of debate   [37:12] Nori’s challenge around verification of carbon removal Each method requires unique approach to measurement   [38:00] How Nori differs from existing carbon registries Reduce barrier to entry (no fees to create methodologies) Don’t have to prove additionality   [40:16] Mark’s insight on 45Q Tax credits for utilizing carbon (from power plant, atmosphere) Incentives overdo, but business must survive without it   Resources Newlight Technologies Climeworks 45Q Tax Credit
