We all have inner demons that we have the hide under the guise that everything is alright. We all have to pick our times to be vulnerable while putting on a strong act around the public. For women, and more specifically black women, the stress and strain that envelops their lives is not only unique but it is harder and heavier than anyone one else's. Most people know the term "Strong Black Woman" and use it like it is a complement. However, do you really know how stressful and mentally exhausting it is to have to be STRONG all the time. When do black women get to rest? When do they get to lighten their load? When is the world going to repay them for the struggle they endure as women and people of color? On this week's show, I welcome my guest, Danese Wright of Root Insurance, to talk about this important topic. She is a self-described "Experienced leader with a passion for driving Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion" who takes educating others about the extra stress of being a black women in modern day America very seriously. Edwin Dorsey is Founder of The Bear Cave, a short-focused newsletter that investigates and uncovers ‘Bad businesses'. Edwin's passion for investing began in third grade, and when his grandmother funded an E-Trade account for him whilst still in elementary school, he was hooked. Whilst at Stanford, Dorsey shone a spotlight on the nefarious Care.com, having instigated an international investigation, that culminated with a Wallstreet Journal front page, a C-suite overhaul, and IAC's ultimate acquisition of Care.com in early 2020. Edwin relives that story and many more like it, including the equally awe-inspiring tale of Root Insurance's unsavoury practices, and subsequent demise. We discuss how to identify these bad businesses and what red flags investors can look out for, before concluding by talking Twitter, and Edwin's super-fandom of both Dorsey and the company's monetisation potential. We all carry around stress. I cannot say enough about Danese - she is smart, strong and a voice for change. The show will be available Monday, 9/6, at 5pm on any platform that you listen to podcasts. Live right now, SampleCon 2021, my first live event. I've got Andrew Abony. Did I pronounce it correct? [00:00:12] Andrew Abony: Yeah. Got it perfect. [00:00:12] Jamin Brazil: Awesome. Business is Adbloom. Love the name. [00:00:16] Andrew Abony: Thank you. [00:00:16] Jamin Brazil: Tell me about it. [00:00:18] Andrew Abony: So Adbloom is a- We're really just experts in user recruitment and acquisition. And what that means is we're very good at getting consumers to engage in different types of marketing, whether that's market research related or fintech, like financial services, the gig economy, adtech, etc. We generally reach American audiences, but we're fairly global and usually reaching consumers who are interested in ways to earn, make, or save. So we don't touch anything that you can kind of buy or sell. All of our clients sort of are- Don't have anything that you can purchase. So a typical client might be like Acorns, the fintech unicorn, Root Insurance, another insurance unicorn, or some of the many great market research companies that are here at SampleCon this year. [00:01:05] Jamin Brazil: So you're doing things like, basically just click through, is that right? [00:01:10] Andrew Abony: Sort of. So we, on one side of our business, work with over 600 content partners. Now, these are bloggers, websites, email newsletters, more so social influencers in micro-communities. And, so, these are effectively places on the web, whether they're in a mobile app or on some sort of a social network where you get communities of highly targeted and highly interested audiences that have all banded around, usually, a sort of singular topic. So it might be people who love fishing use a certain kind of fishing app. People that love their pets follow- Might follow a particular influencer, a dog influencer on Instagram. And working with that type of partner, they can engage their audience in a way that's incredibly authentic, one-to-one, and really be able to get them to go participate in something like a market research campaign or to go sign up for pet insurance or to go buy a new fishing rod. So the sort of magic happens where we introduce a great client campaign with the right partner. And they just sort of organically come up with an awesome way to acquire that user form. [00:02:10] Jamin Brazil: I love that. That is- That's super modern and very different, relative to how sample is currently, generally speaking, recruited for, right? [00:02:19] Andrew Abony: Yeah. [00:02:20] Jamin Brazil: Which is normally through channel partners or publications or those sorts of models. I think it's very modern. Do you find that you're able to recruit younger audiences pretty effectively? [00:02:32] Andrew Abony: So younger audiences still remain a challenge, just like everything else. I think what we're learning and putting into practice more often than not is that you need to reach that audience, whether it's the 18-year-old video game male or the 55-year-old female, you have to reach that audience where they are ha...

Car insurance pre-dates broad distribution of cars. The first recorded policy was issued in 1897 to Gilbert Loomis of Ohio. Production of the Model T, regarded as the first affordable automobile that made vehicle travel available to the masses, was not introduced until nearly 10 years later. And just like the car, evolving from combustion-only to electric, self-driven to semi-autonomous in some cases, insurance has changed and innovated over the last 120 years, adding rate calculations, moving to digital data storage and adding additional services like roadside. However, the method for calculating insurance rates based predominantly on age, vehicle and mileage has been standard since 1937. An insurance startup, Root Insurance, was founded to innovate this model, defining rates on how you drive, not who you are. We sat down with Sarah Woods, Director of Product Management to learn more about Root and their roadside program.
