USADA is one of the world's leading organizations on anti-doping and protecting clean athletes. Who is the face behind the organization? Travis Tygart. Having been CEO of USADA since 2007, Travis works closely with the USADA Board of Directors to carry out the organization's mission of preserving the integrity of competition, inspiring true sport, and protecting the rights of clean athletes. Tygart was the man personally behind the downfall of Lance Armstrong and exposed the U.S. Postal Service pro-cycling team doping conspiracy. He has also published numerous papers and law review articles on various topics, including Title IX, antitrust, and doping in sport as well as been a strong advocate for meaningful justice in the Russian doping scandal, and reforms to the World Anti-Doping Agency to ensure a strong and independent global anti-doping system. Tygart has been recognized by Sports Illustrated as one of the 50 Most Powerful People in Sports, named to the TIME 100 list of Most Influential People in the World for 2013, and deemed one of the Top 12 World Sports Personalities of the Year by Sport Intern. He has also been named one of the World's Most Influential Sports Personalities by Inside Sport. When Travis agreed to come on the podcast, I was beyond thrilled at the opportunity to discuss USADA, clean sport, and his own personal story. Orlando’s Paolo Banchero, the No. 1 overall pick last summer, had 27 points, nine rebounds and five assists in an impressive NBA debut. Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 pick last year, had 18 points and 10 assists. Cunningham’s last assist set up Isaiah Stewart for a 3-pointer with 11.6 seconds left that gave the Pistons a four-point lead. Bogdanovic made two free throws with 4.7 seconds left to restore Detroit’s four-point cushion, sealing the victory. Bulls 116, Heat 108 – DeRozan scores 37, Bulls top Heat 116-108 in season opener DeMar DeRozan scored 28 of his 37 points in the second half, Ayo Dosunmu added 17 and the short-handed Chicago Bulls topped the Miami Heat 116-108 in the season-opener for both teams on Wednesday night. Nikola Vucevic scored 15 points and grabbed 17 rebounds for the Bulls, and Goran Dragic added 12 off the Chicago bench. MLB – Major League Baseball Playoffs – League Championship Series (best of 7) Yesterday Houston Astros 4, New York Yankees 2 (HOU leads 1-0) San Diego Padres 8, Philadelphia Phillies 5 (Series tied 1-1) Astros 4, Yankees 2 – Verlander Ks 11 to lead Astros over Yankees 4-2 in ALCS Justin Verlander struck out 11 in six strong innings and Yuli Gurriel, Chas McCormick and Jeremy Peña all homered to power the Houston Astros to a 4-2 win over the New York Yankees in their AL Championship Series opener. The Astros are in their sixth consecutive ALCS, looking to reach the World Series for the fourth time in that span, against a New York team in the LCS for the first time since being eliminated by Houston in 2019. The game was tied 1-all in the sixth when Gurriel connected off reliever Clarke Schmidt for a solo shot that put Houston on top. Two batters later, McCormick sent a sinker from Schmidt into right field to make it 3-1. Padres 8, Phillies 5 – Drury, Padres rally to beat Nola, Phillies 8-5, tie NLCS 1-1 Brandon Drury hit a go-ahead, two-run single during a five-run rally in the fifth inning and the San Diego Padres stunned Aaron Nola and the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 to tie their all-wild card NL Championship Series at one game apiece. The outburst started with Padres catcher Austin Nola hitting an RBI single off his younger brother that brought the sellout, towel-twirling crowd of 44,607 at Petco Park to life. Three innings earlier, the Phillies took a 4-0 lead with a rally that included bloop hits, a sun-aided double on a gorgeous, 92-degree afternoon and some shoddy Padres defense. Tonight NY Yankees (Severino 7-3) at Houston (Valdez 17-6), 7:37 p.m. (HOU leads 1-0) NHL – Red Wings’ Vrana enters NHL/NHLPA player assistance program Detroit Red Wings forward Jakub Vrana has entered the player assistance program of the NHL and NHL Players’ Association. The league and the union made the announcement. They did not specify why he entered the program. Vrana will be paid while he is receiving treatment. The program administrators will determine when he’s cleared to compete for the Red Wings. The 26-year-old Vrana is from the Czech Republic. He had a goal and an assist in Saturday’s win at New Jersey. He did not play in a home game two days later against the Los Angeles Kings due to personal reasons. NFL – National Football League – Week 7 Tonight New Orleans Saints at Arizona Cardinals, 8:15 p.m. NCAAFB – Notre Dame Stadium no longer place of solace under Freeman Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman understands the problem. The Fighting Irish have lost their home-field advantage. Finding the solution has proven to be challenging. Notre Dame is an inexplicable 1-2 in South Bend in Freeman’s first season, despite entering each game as a double-digit favorite. And they easily could be 0-3. They’ll have a chance to turn things around Saturday when UNLV comes to town. Notre Dame is a heavy favorite but will need to sweep its final three home games to post a winning record at Notre Dame Stadium. NCAAFB – Mississippi State freshman lineman Sam Westmoreland dies Mississippi State says freshman offensive lineman Sam Westmoreland has died at the age of 18. Westmoreland was an industrial technology major from Tupelo who would have turned 19 on Friday. The news release announcing Westmoreland’s death did not provide details but said the school was working with the athletic department, the Oktibbeha County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office to determine facts and would not comment further. MSU coach Mike Leach said the athletics family was heartbroken by Westmoreland’s death, which he called sudden. Westmoreland was listed on the roster for the Bulldogs’ Southeastern Conference game Saturday at No. 6 Alabama but had not played this season, according to game notes. NCAAMBKB – Wolverines add another Howard The 22nd-ranked Michigan basketball team features three Howards this season. Juwan Howard is entering his fourth season as coach, and his first with two sons on the roster. Highly touted freshman Jett Howard is expected to be in the starting lineup on the wing. Junior Jace Howard will have an opportunity to play a larger role this season as his brother’s backup. Center Hunter Dickinson put his NBA goals on hold to return for his junior season after leading the team in scoring and rebounding the previous two years. WNBA – Brittney Griner spends 32nd birthday in Russian prison Brittney Griner spent her 32nd birthday in a Russian prison, awaiting an appeal to her nine-year sentence for drug possession that’s set for next week. The WNBA star has been especially down lately, according to her lawyers. They were with her for part of her birthday on Tuesday. Attorney Maria Blagovolina says they passed along well wishes from family and friends. The WNBA star’s appeal hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25. While it’s unlikely the appeal will overturn her conviction, her lawyers hope it could lessen the sentence. NASCAR – Bell says Wallace apologized on flight home from Las Vegas Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell shared a flight home from Las Vegas, and Wallace apologized during the trip to his fellow Toyota teammate for the incident that crippled Bell’s championship chances. Bell said Wallace also apologized to the entire Toyota group in the Monday competition meeting. Wallace has been suspended one race by NASCAR for a dangerous act of retaliation that inadvertently collected Bell. He will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway for deliberately retaliating against reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson at Las Vegas. Wallace hooked Larson in the rear corner of his car to spin him directly into traffic, where Larson drilled Bell and ended Bell’s race. Olympics – US figure skaters still await medals from Beijing Games Eight months after finishing behind the Russians at the Winter Olympics, the U.S. team has yet to receive its medals. They do not even know whether they will be silver or gold. That’s because the Russian Anti-Doping Agency only recently finished its investigation into Kamila Valieva. Her positive doping test surfaced during the opening week of the Olympics. It led to its biggest scandal in years. RUSADA did not reveal the results of its investigation, but it did say that the next step in the process would be to hold disciplinary hearings in September or October. The WNBA star has been especially down lately, according to her lawyers. They were with her for part of her birthday on Tuesday. Attorney Maria Blagovolina says they passed along well wishes from family and friends. The WNBA star’s appeal hearing is scheduled for Oct. 25. While it’s unlikely the appeal will overturn her conviction, her lawyers hope it could lessen the sentence. NASCAR – Bell says Wallace apologized on flight home from Las Vegas Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell shared a flight home from Las Vegas, and Wallace apologized during the trip to his fellow Toyota teammate for the incident that crippled Bell’s championship chances. Bell said Wallace also apologized to the entire Toyota group in the Monday competition meeting. Wallace has been suspended one race by NASCAR for a dangerous act of retaliation that inadvertently collected Bell. He will miss Sunday’s race at Homestead-Miami Speedway for deliberately retaliating against reigning NASCAR champion Kyle Larson at Las Vegas. Wallace hooked Larson in the rear corner of his car to spin him directly into traffic, where Larson drilled Bell and ended Bell’s race. Olympics – US figure skaters still await medals from Beijing Games Eight months after finishing behind the Russians at the Winter Olympics, the U.S. team has yet to receive its medals. They do not even know whether they will be silver or gold. That’s because the Russian Anti-Doping Agency only recently finished its investigation into Kamila Valieva. Her positive doping test surfaced during the opening week of the Olympics. It led to its biggest scandal in years. RUSADA did not reveal the results of its investigation, but it did say that the next step in the process would be to hold disciplinary hearings in September or October. The program administrators will determine when he’s cleared to compete for the Red Wings. The 26-year-old Vrana is from the Czech Republic. MSU coach Mike Leach said the athletics family was heartbroken by Westmoreland’s death, which he called sudden. President of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Witold Bańka says the agency is monitoring the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) in the wake of the war in Ukraine. Speaking on Sport Integrity Australia's On Side podcast at the WADA Global Education Conference, Bańka said the situation remained very complex. “The fact that Russian and Belarussian athletes are not competing in internationally, at least majority of them, some of them they are able to compete as in neutral, but the majority are sanctioned, is very, very complicated,” he said. “We decided not to close the open line of communication with RUSADA. The world cannot create a paradise for cheats.” WADA's president believes the anti-doping system is currently working well but acknowledges there is always room for improvement. “It's a race, you know. It's a race with the cheats,” he said. “We have to be stronger. We have to be faster. We have to have better tools to eradicate doping from sports. The rules are OK, [the] system works, but we still have to think ‘how we can do more?'” Bańka also talks about the biggest challenges WADA faces, the role education plays in WADA's development and balancing their role of catching and punishing versus protecting and supporting. Endurance News: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has today announced the launch of the PTO Tour revealing dates and locations for the first ever PTO US Open, PTO Canadian Open and the 2nd edition of the game-changing team competition – The Collins Cup. The PTO Tour is a consolidation of PTO events into a ‘Tour' concept where each event will see the world's greatest non-drafting professional male and female triathletes competing for a prize purse of $1,000,0000 for each Open and $1,500,000 for The Collins Cup. With a full complement of events the PTO Tour will consist of a US Open, a Canadian Open, Asian Open, European Open and The Collins Cup. Professional Races in 2022 will see a men's race and women's race each a 100km distance to determine the ultimate athlete: 2km swim, 80km bike leg and a 18km run. As well as professional racing, the PTO Tour will, for the first time, introduce age group racing, giving amateurs the opportunity to meet and race alongside the professionals, a hallmark of the sport of Triathlon. In addition to sprint (25 km) and middle distance (100km) age group triathlons, the PTO Tour events will include additional racing opportunities in the component sports of the Triathlon – Swim, Bike, Run, making the PTO Tour events a festival-like celebration of multisport. Age Group registration will open on 25th January. World Triathlon sanctions Russian Triathlon Federation World Triathlon's Executive Board has decided to sanction the Russian Triathlon Federation due to… ‘the significant number of doping cases in Russia.' The sanction will be effective for one year, and World Triathlon will review quarterly that necessary measures are being followed. The sanctions approved by the Executive Board, consist of the following: The Russian Triathlon Federation will reach an agreement with RUSADA to test all Russian athletes, especially all those athletes who will be competing internationally. The Russian Triathlon Federation will, together with World Triathlon, create an education plan for Russian athletes and coaches in regard to doping issues. The Russian Triathlon Federation will compensate and refund the prize monies previously awarded to the Russian triathletes sanctioned with doping offences. Russian Triathlon Federation officials must resign from any World Triathlon and European bodies for the period of one year. The Russian Triathlon Federation cannot organise any World or European Triathlon events for one year (until the end of 2022). The Russian National Federation is to reimburse World Triathlon for all costs (including but not limited to laboratory fees, hearing expenses and travel) related to any of the violations of the anti-doping rules committed by their athletes and coaches. Sanctions must be taken inside the Russian National Triathlon Federation for any coach or official that is involved in any doping violation, and collaboration must be made with World Triathlon disciplinary bodies. While many would consider that a risk, Von Berg's approach marks him out as a man likely to achieve success in whatever career path he chooses. “I am driven by the fact that whatever I do in life, I want to do it extremely well, to my fullest capability, and discover how well I can do it. Endurance News: The Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has today announced the launch of the PTO Tour revealing dates and locations for the first ever PTO US Open, PTO Canadian Open and the 2nd edition of the game-changing team competition – The Collins Cup. The PTO Tour is a consolidation of PTO events into a ‘Tour' concept where each event will see the world's greatest non-drafting professional male and female triathletes competing for a prize purse of $1,000,0000 for each Open and $1,500,000 for The Collins Cup. With a full complement of events the PTO Tour will consist of a US Open, a Canadian Open, Asian Open, European Open and The Collins Cup. Professional Races in 2022 will see a men's race and women's race each a 100km distance to determine the ultimate athlete: 2km swim, 80km bike leg and a 18km run. As well as professional racing, the PTO Tour will, for the first time, introduce age group racing, giving amateurs the opportunity to meet and race alongside the professionals, a hallmark of the sport of Triathlon. In addition to sprint (25 km) and middle distance (100km) age group triathlons, the PTO Tour events will include additional racing opportunities in the component sports of the Triathlon – Swim, Bike, Run, making the PTO Tour events a festival-like celebration of multisport. Age Group registration will open on 25th January. Just like The Collins Cup, each PTO Tour event will have world class TV production broadcast live to a global audience and high-quality shoulder programming showcasing the stories of the PTO Professionals. World Triathlon sanctions Russian Triathlon Federation World Triathlon's Executive Board has decided to sanction the Russian Triathlon Federation due to… ‘the significant number of doping cases in Russia.' The sanction will be effective for one year, and World Triathlon will review quarterly that necessary measures are being followed. The sanctions approved by the Executive Board, consist of the following: The Russian Triathlon Federation will reach an agreement with RUSADA to test all Russian athletes, especially all those athletes who will be competing internationally. The Russian Triathlon Federation will, together with World Triathlon, create an education plan for Russian athletes and coaches in regard to doping issues. The Russian Triathlon Federation will compensate and refund the prize monies previously awarded to the Russian triathletes sanctioned with doping offences. Russian Triathlon Federation officials must resign from any World Triathlon and European bodies for the period of one year. The Russian Triathlon Federation cannot organise any World or European Triathlon events for one year (until the end of 2022). The Russian National Federation is to reimburse World Triathlon for all costs (including but not limited to laboratory fees, hearing expenses and travel) related to any of the violations of the anti-doping rules committed by their athletes and coaches. Sanctions must be taken inside the Russian National Triathlon Federation for any coach or official that is involved in any doping violation, and collaboration must be made with World Triathlon disciplinary bodies. The show notes below come from a FasterSkier article published on Dec. 10. Russia never tip-toed around its desire to dope on an industrial scale. That much has been documented in an Academy Award winning documentary and the more academic reports cataloging Russian doping misdeeds. Many have claimed Russia suffered a mere hand slap from WADA and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for its transgressions. When RUSADA was reinstated as compliant in September 2018, the world of clean sport made a collective eye roll. At that point, RUSADA and the Russian sport authorities had yet to comply with the conditions set forth by WADA for reinstatement. The primary unmet condition was the handing over of the Moscow anti-doping lab's raw data. WADA eventually received the lab's data in April 2019.In a report leaked several weeks ago, and then subsequently made public by WADA, it was determined the data had been manipulated. Additionally, it was determined that internal communications had been fabricated to help push blame onto actors like Grigory Rodchenkov, the former lab head who became a whistle blower. The communications were to make it appear that a few rogue individuals were at the core of the doping program.This brings us back to today's vote which made effective a four-year ban — what WADA calls a “period of non-compliance for the Russian Anti-Doping Agency.” Many consequences were laid out in Monday's press release. In some ways, Russia's skin will be taken out of the international sporting game. The most publicized penalty remains a ban on Russian Government officials, representatives, and athletes from major international sport events including the 2020 and 2022 Olympics and Paralympics and World Championship events.Like in 2018 when the Russian Federation was banned from the Winter Olympics, Russian athletes cleared of any wrongdoing, however, will be allowed to compete at these “Major Events” during the four year sanction. Athletes will do so under a yet undetermined neutral flag. During the PyeyongChang Olympics, Russian athletes were allowed to compete under the IOC umbrella as an “Olympic Athlete from Russia” or OAR. It also appears Russian athletes will be allowed to compete under the Russian flag in such events like the European Football Championships – Euro 2020 – as this is not considered a major event.Not all believe justice has been served.“Today the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has robbed athletes worldwide of their right to clean sport due to their inability to enforce the strongest possible sanctions on Russia,” claimed the Global Athlete, an athlete centered advocacy group dedicated to clean sport. “Strong sanctions which would include a complete ban of Russia and Russian athletes at all international competitions including the Olympic and Paralympic Games.”As a counter, Johnathan Taylor, the chair of WADA's Compliance Review Committee that recommended the penalties, said innocent Russian athletes and athletes at large are protected. “Today, the ExCo has delivered a strong and unequivocal decision. While being tough on the authorities, this recommendation avoids punishing the innocent and instead stands up for the rights of clean athletes everywhere. If an athlete from Russia can prove that they were not involved in the institutionalized doping program, that their data were not part of the manipulation, that they were subject to adequate testing prior to the event in question, and that they fulfil any other strict conditions to be determined, they will be allowed to compete.”Taylor is quoted as saying WADA possesses the names of 145 athletes who are the “most suspicious” despite the manipulated, and in some cases deleted, data set. Russia has 21 days to appeal the decision to the Court for Arbitration of Sport (CAS).
"When I was born the doctor wanted to kill me!", Ali Jawad. Jawad, is a paralympic gold medalist and world record breaking powerlifter with Crohn's disease. He has had to overcome many challenges in life. His motto: "Why be the best when you can be the greatest?". Ali's competition personal best is 195kg but in the gym he has bench pressed over 200kg. Ali Jawad, born as a double above the knee amputee, is a full time athlete, currently competing at 54kg in the qualifying rounds (final round end of April 2020) to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Although, Ali is one of the highest performing powerlifters in the world he can be taken down by Crohn's disease at any time. Ali took up powerlifting at the age of 16. He competed in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in London, finishing fourth. The following year he took gold at the Asian Open Championships making a world record lift of 185.5 kg. He gained a world title at the 2014 World Championships in Dubai, won the European title and gold at the 2015 Americas Open Championships and at the 2016 Rio Games, Ali won silver and his first ever Paralympic medal for lifting 190kg. More recently he claimed silver at the Tokyo 2019 World Para Powerlifting World Cup at the Tokyo 2020 test event. He is famous across social media for his celebratory competition dances, some of which have "gone viral". Revealed in this interview, a new dance is planned for Tokyo 2020. Despite the pressure of living with Crohn's disease, performing as an elite athlete with high levels of pain and challenges to control that discomfort, Ali is an anti- doping advocate and educator sitting on the UK Athletes Anti Doping Commission Board. He is one of the highest profile commentators in the athlete movement to ban doping. This interview includes Ali's comments relating to the World Anti Doping Agency (WADA) ruling on 9 December 2019 which bans Russia from competing at Tokyo 2020. ideaXme was the first organisation to catch Ali for his reaction to ruling. WADA ruling: On 9 December, the World Anti-Doping Agency’s Executive Committee (ExCo) endorsed the recommendation made by the independent Compliance Review Committee (CRC) that the Russian Anti-Doping Agency (RUSADA) be declared non-compliant with the World Anti-Doping Code (Code) for a period of four years. Meeting in Lausanne, Switzerland, the 12-member ExCo supported the CRC’s recommendation, which includes a series of strong consequences and conditions of reinstatement in accordance with the International Standard for Code Compliance by Signatories (ISCCS). The Chair of the CRC, Jonathan Taylor QC, took ExCo members through the CRC’s recommendation, which had been provided to ExCo members on 25 November together with the report of WADA Intelligence and Investigations (I&I) and that of the independent forensic experts from Lausanne University’s Institute of Forensic Science. “For too long, Russian doping has detracted from clean sport. The blatant breach by the Russian authorities of RUSADA’s reinstatement conditions, approved by the ExCo in September 2018, demanded a robust response. That is exactly what has been delivered today. Russia was afforded every opportunity to get its house in order and re-join the global anti-doping community for the good of its athletes and of the integrity of sport, but it chose instead to continue in its stance of deception and denial. As a result, the WADA ExCo has responded in the strongest possible terms, while protecting the rights of Russian athletes that can prove that they were not involved and did not benefit from these fraudulent acts". WADA Since the interview, WADA received the resignation of Victoria Aggar, a highly respected member of its own Athlete Committee, who said she was standing down after WADA broke its promises and failed to protect clean athletes. Demand for The Paralympics 2020: When it comes to tickets, next year’s Tokyo Paralympics will be just like the Olympics. International Paralympic President Andrew Parsons announced on Tuesday this week that there were 3.1 million tickets requested earlier this year in the first lottery phase. This exceeds the 2.3 million available. About 600,000 tickets were awarded in the first lottery, and another lottery is set for early next year. Alison did some sport climbing; Jill did elements of a triathlon, and we both participated on Team Olympic Fever for Team USA's Virtual Race (we're currently sitting in 3rd place--wooo!). It's that time of year when the International Olympic Committee members get together for their semiannual IOC Session, and this one was a big one! First up, the big decision: Who will host the 2026 Winter Olympics? Spoiler alert (in case you haven't heard the celebrations all the way where you are): It's Milan-Cortina. Jill watched the bid presentations, and boy, did Stockholm-Åre have a sound plan guided by the IOC's New Norm/Sustainability push. However, as Alison pointed out, Milan-Cortina had more support the whole way through, and they had the government guarantees. What do you think matters more to the voting members? Also at the session, The IOC celebrated its 125th anniversary by inaugurating its brand new headquarters, the Olympic House. Putting yourself in another's shoes – or ski-boots — is an age-old tenant. But it would be truly hard to imagine being twenty-one years old and thrust into the biathlon world spotlight. At least year's Olympics in PyeongChang, Swedish biathlete Sabastian Samuelsson literally arrived on the scene in his canary yellow race suit — he won a silver in the pursuit and gold as a member of Sweden's men's relay team. During his post-race press conferences, his condor was appreciated as was his down to earth vibe. The medals, the massive media attention, the desire for his limited time were all new pathways for a young person to navigate. In this Nordic Nation podcast, we spoke with Samuelsson on February 8 to learn about his life since PyeongChang. (Photo: IBU/Biathlonworld) Beyond being one of the most recognizable faces in Sweden, Samuelsson has become an outspoken critic of WADA's Compliance Review Committee (CRC) and its Executive Committee (EX CO). This past January, after RUSADA missed the Dec. 31 deadline for handing over the Moscow Lab's LIMS data and any underlying data, Samuelsson penned an open letter to the CRC's head, Jonathan Taylor. (Despite missing the deadline, the CRC recommended to the EX CO to maintain RUSADA's compliant status. The EX CO voted not to penalize RUSADA for missing the deadline.) The controversy that's dominated the sporting world this week - the decision by the World Anti-Doping Agency to reinstate Russia's anti-doping agency which could see their country's athletes once again competing in international sport. The agency - known as Rusada - has been suspended since 2015 over alleged state backed doping after it was accused of covering up drug abuse, most notably during the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The President of USA Cycling has said the world should get to know Ashton Lambie - Two years ago, he was a shop mechanic in Kansas and cycling on gravel - fast forward to September 2018 - the 27 year old has just set a new world record in the individual pursuit at the Pan American Championships by 3.25 seconds - a record that had stood since 2011. He'd already won a gold medal in the team pursuit a few days earlier. He's been telling Shari how his journey began on a bike. This time last year, Hurricane Maria was the strongest storm to hit Puerto Rico in 85 years, it left a trail of death and destruction, killing around 3,000 people and destroying the island which resulted in months of power outages because of damage to the electrical grid. Caught up in that Hurricane, was Puerto Rico's first ever golfer to earn full-time status on the LPGA Tour, Maria Torress. A year later, she has just competed at the Evian Championship, the final golf major of the season, at one point she was the overall leader. She's been telling Shari how she faced her namesake Hurricane. When married couple Behan and Jamie Gifford plotted to set sail around the world with their children 10 years ago, there was only one problem. Their kids, aged four, six and nine, couldn't swim. The boat is equipped with a 75-horsepower engine, along with three tight bedrooms and two bathrooms. Given that Behan and Jamie quit stable jobs to pursue a life at sea, budgeting for diesel fuel, docking fees, food and other travel costs was essential. Behan has explaining what life on sea has been like in the last ten years.
LISTEN TO DAVID HOWMAN TALK WITH RADIO SPORT BREAKFAST ABOVE Former World Anti-Doping Agency director-general David Howman has lambasted the poor principles involved in the decision to usher Russia back into the WADA programme.The World Anti-Doping Agency declared Russia's scandal-ridden drug-fighting operation back in business Thursday, a decision designed to bring a close to one of sports' most notorious doping scandals but one bitterly disputed by hundreds of athletes and described as "treachery" by the lawyer for the man who exposed the corruption.On a 9-2 vote, the executive committee took the advice of the agency's compliance review panel and declared RUSADA as having satisfied conditions of reinstatement that were gradually softened over the summer.In most tangible ways, the decision doesn't change much: RUSADA has been up and running for a while, bringing one of the world's largest testing programs back on line with the help of officials from Britain and elsewhere. And Russia's Olympic committee was brought back into the fold after the Pyeongchang Olympics, where athletes who could prove they were clean were able to compete as "Olympic Athletes from Russia."But RUSADA's reinstatement, after nearly a three-year suspension, now clears the country to again bid for major international events — although soccer's World Cup was held there this summer despite that restriction.Howman says they haven't satisfied critical conditions, and people are dreaming if they think Russia will cough up evidence in the next six months that leads to the sanctioning of athletes.WADA have granted the concession at an executive committee meeting in the Seychelles.Howman told Radio Sport Breakfast how the politics work."What the Russians have been able to do is put pressure on through saying 'look, we will be able to hold international events if we were compliant, and the IOC is saying 'that's pretty important, because international federations want to hold their world championships at no costs."The IOC form half of the WADA board.Howman says he was once a cynical optimist about doping in sport, now he says he's a cynical pessimist.The move also clears a major hurdle for Russia's track team to be declared compliant by that sport's international governing body (IAAF) — one of the few to take a strong, consistent stand against the doping — though IAAF released a statement saying there were other milestones still unmet and its next update isn't due until December.Perhaps most importantly, hundreds of athletes and dozens of world anti-doping leaders see it as a stinging rebuke to the ideal of fair play."WADA's decision to reinstate Russia represents the greatest treachery against clean athletes in Olympic history," said Jim Walden, the attorney for Grigory Rodchenkov, the former Moscow lab director who exposed much of the Russian scheme.WADA had been telegraphing the move since Sept. 14, when it released the recommendation of its compliance review committee. Olympic champion Beckie Scott resigned from that committee afterward."I'm profoundly disappointed," Scott said to Canadian broadcaster CBC after the decision. "I feel this was an opportunity for WADA, and they have dealt a devastating blow to clean sport. I'm quite dismayed."Ben Hawes, chairman of the British Olympic Association's Athletes' Commission, said: "It is clear the process of the removal of these sanctions whilst key criteria has yet to be fulfilled has angered the athlete community."Even in Russia, where the news was welcomed, it came with a sense that there's still work to be done."These questions will always follow us," said RUSADA CEO Yuri Ganus, whose appointment to the job was part of the housecleaning at the agency that WADA demanded. On Wednesday, Nordic Nation reached Biathlon Canada President Murray Wylie to discuss an open letter he signed on behalf of his organization and sent to the leaders of the International Biathlon Union. We encourage you to read this more in-depth article on the open letter for some detailed context before listening to this podcast episode. Here's some of the key info from that piece: On Dec. 10, the Executive Board of the International Biathlon Union (IBU) announced that the Russian Biathlon Union (RBU) had been relegated to “provisional membership” for the 2017/2018 competition season. The IBU's decision comes on the heels of the International Olympic Committee's recent actions on Russia's participation at the 2018 Winter Games. Despite the RBU's less-than-full IBU member status, Russia is still scheduled to host the final IBU World Cup races of the season from March 20-25 in Tyumen and IBU Cup 7 & 8 in Uvat and Khanty-Mansiysk. In an open letter sent to IBU President Anders Besseberg and IBU Secretary General Nicole Resch dated Dec. 8, 2017, Wylie stated Biathlon Canada will not be sending athletes to the IBU-sanctioned events in Russia in March. On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman presents the audio from the teleconference of the December 9 London press conference with Professor Richard H. McLaren, law professor at Western University in London, Ontario, Canada. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) enlisted Prof. McLaren to lead the investigation and to issue a report about media reports of state-sponsored doping in Russia in sport. This is the second and final part of that report, and was made public Friday. The first part was issued on July 18, 2016. Key Highlights of 2nd Report Institutionalised Doping Conspiracy and Cover Up 1. An institutional conspiracy existed across summer and winter sports athletes who participated with Russian officials within the Ministry of Sport and its infrastructure, such as the RUSADA, CSP and the Moscow Laboratory, along with the FSB for the purposes of manipulating doping controls. The summer and winter sports athletes were not acting individually but within an organised infrastructure as reported on in the 1st Report. 2. This systematic and centralised cover up and manipulation of the doping control process evolved and was refined over the course of its use at London 2012 Summer Games, Universiade Games 2013, Moscow IAAF World Championships 2013, and the Winter Games in Sochi in 2014. The evolution of the infrastructure was also spawned in response to WADA regulatory changes and surprise interventions. 3. The swapping of Russian athletes’ urine samples further confirmed in this 2nd Report as occurring at Sochi, did not stop at the close of the Winter Olympics. The sample swapping technique used at Sochi became a regular monthly practice of the Moscow Laboratory in dealing with elite summer and winter athletes. Further DNA and salt testing confirms the technique, while others relied on DPM. 4. The key findings of the 1st Report remain unchanged. The forensic testing, which is based on immutable facts, is conclusive. The evidence does not depend on verbal testimony to draw a conclusion. Rather, it tests the physical evidence and a conclusion is drawn from those results. The results of the forensic and laboratory analysis initiated by the IP establish that the conspiracy was perpetrated between 2011 and 2015. The Athlete Part of Conspiracy and Cover Up 5. Over 1000 Russian athletes competing in summer, winter and Paralympic sport, can be identified as being involved in or benefiting from manipulations to conceal positive doping tests. Based on the information reported to International Federations through the IP to WADA there are 600 (84%) summer athletes and 95 (16%) winter athletes. London Summer Olympic Games 6. Fifteen Russian athlete medal winners were identified out of the 78 on the London Washout Lists. Ten of these athletes have now had their medals stripped. IAAF Moscow World Championships 7. Following the 2013 IAAF Moscow World Championships, 4 athletics athletes’ samples were swapped. Additional target testing is in progress. Sochi Winter Olympic Games 8. Sample swapping is established by 2 female ice hockey players’ samples with male DNA. 9. Tampering with original sample established by 2 [sport] athletes, winners of four Sochi Olympic Gold medals, and a female Silver medal winner in [sport] with physiologically impossible salt readings. 10. Twelve medal winning athletes (including the above 3) from 44 examined samples had scratches and marks on the inside of the caps of their B sample bottles, indicating tampering. 11. Six winners of 21 Paralympic medals are found to have had their urine samples tampered with at Sochi.
