Dr. Patrick D. Bangert, is Vice President of AI, and heads the AI Engineering and AI Sciences teams, at Samsung SDS. Samsung SDS is a subsidiary of the Samsung Group, which provides information technology (IT) services, and are active in research and development of emerging IT technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, Internet of things (IoT) and Engineering Outsourcing. Dr. Bangert is responsible for the Brightics AI Accelerator, a distributed ML training and automated ML product, and for X.insights, a data center intelligence platform. Among his other responsibilities, Dr. Bangert acts as a visionary for the future of AI at Samsung. Before joining Samsung, Dr. Bangert spent 15 years as CEO at Algorithmica Technologies, a machine learning software company serving the chemicals and oil and gas industries. Prior to that, he was assistant professor of applied mathematics at Jacobs University in Germany, as well as a researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Dr. Bangert obtained his machine learning PhD in mathematics and his Masters in theoretical physics from University College London. A German native, Dr. Bangert grew up in Malaysia and the Philippines, and later lived in the UK, Austria, Nepal and USA. He has done business in many countries and believes that AI must serve humanity beyond mere automation of routine tasks. The hard power of the United States and its NATO allies is a deterrent of last resort against very real military threats in Europe and well beyond it. But a growing concern is the creeping, quiet influence of China on democratic societies, especially with respect to critical 5G infrastructure under development across the world. The transatlantic community is rightly concerned about the threat that Chinese investment in critical infrastructure poses to our nations. At NATO's London Summit in December 2019, allied leaders for the first time recognized the challenges posed by China and the need for secure and resilient 5G communications systems. Lee, appeared before a South Korean court on Monday, awaiting a ruling on whether new allegations including accounting fraud and stock manipulation will send him back to jail after more than two years of freedom. Prosecutors last week asked the court to issue an arrest warrant against Lee, culminating a probe into a controversial 2015 merger of two Samsung affiliates that they said helped facilitate Lee’s plan to assume greater control of the group. The risk of more jail time for Lee who has led the group since his father’s heart attack in 2014, has cast a pall over the conglomerate and its crown jewel, Samsung Electronics Co, whose annual revenue alone is equivalent to 12% of South Korea’s gross domestic product. The father of a dead 22-year-old worker and the company’s co-president Kim Ki- nam signed a formal settlement agreement in Seoul as other disabled ex- employees looked on. “We sincerely apologise to the workers who suffered from illness and their families,” said the firm’s co-president Kim Ki-nam. “We have failed to properly manage health risks at our semiconductor and LCD factories.” Samsung Electronics is the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturer and chipmaker and the flagship subsidiary of the Samsung Group, by far the biggest of the family-controlled conglomerates that dominate the South’s economy. Campaign groups say that about 240 people have suffered from work-related illnesses after being employed at Samsung with around 80 of them -- many of them young women -- dying. Under a deal announced earlier this month, Samsung Electronics will pay the group’s employees compensation of up to 150 million won ($133,000) per case. It covers 16 types of cancer, some other rare illnesses, miscarriages and congenital diseases suffered by the workers’ children. Claimants can have worked at plants as far back as 1984. The scandal emerged in 2007 when former workers at its semiconductor and display factories in Suwon, south of Seoul, and their families said that staff had been diagnosed or died of various forms of cancer. A series of rulings and decisions by courts, Seoul’s state labour welfare agency and a mediation committee followed over more than 10 years, culminating in Friday’s announcement. Hwang Sang-ki, who signed the agreement on behalf of the workers and their families, told reporters he was glad to have fulfilled his promise to his daughter, who died of leukaemia in 2007, to prove Samsung was to blame for her death. But he went on: “The apology honestly was not enough for the families of the victims but we will accept it. “No amount of apology will be enough to heal all the insults, the pain of industrial injuries and the suffering of losing one’s family. “I cannot forget the pain she and our family went through. Too many people have suffered the same fate.” Trade secret Little is known about possible connections between the production process in the factories and the workers’ illnesses, as Samsung has refused to disclose what specific chemical substances it uses, describing the information as a trade secret. Hwang and other relatives have sought a court order to compel it to release the details. “Compensation for industrial injury is important, but what’s more important is prevention,” said Hwang, whose story was made into a movie in 2013. Samsung has played a key part in the South’s rise to become the world’s 11th- largest economy, but it is also the focus of resentment over the power and influence of the chaebols and has faced accusations of murky political connections.
