In this episode of the Thought Leadership Leverage podcast, host Bill Sherman sits down with Phil Geldart, CEO of Eagle's Flight, to discuss his innovative approach to leadership and learning. With his upcoming book, "Leading What Matters Most: A Business Parable on Unlocking Human Potential," set to release later in 2024, Geldart shares insights from his transformative career. Early in his career, Geldart faced a daunting challenge: engaging a skeptical audience who believed they had nothing to learn. Hired by a company indifferent to training, he devised a unique strategy. Phil created a desert survival board game and persuaded reluctant factory workers to play. The game's unexpected effectiveness, leading them to realize the principles could enhance their work, marked the birth of experiential learning. Building on the success of his innovative training methods, Geldart authored his first book, "In Your Hands: The Behaviors of a World-Class Leader." By breaking down complex leadership concepts into digestible sections with practical illustrations, he provided an accessible tool for personal and professional growth. His subsequent books, like "EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: Changing Behavior to Improve Performance," further solidified his reputation as a pioneer in experiential learning. Despite his success, Geldart humbly resisted the label of a thought leader until his Senior Head of Marketing pointed out his influence. Focused on creating real change, Geldart emphasizes the importance of adding value to others' lives over seeking recognition. This perspective shapes his and Sherman's discussion on the true essence of thought leadership, defined more by impact than titles. Geldart sees the modern workforce as young, informed, and value-driven, requiring a shift in leadership approaches. His new book aims to address this by equipping leaders with tools to unlock human potential. Partnering with Forbes, Geldart plans to leverage their platform to reach busy CEOs, planting seeds of thought leadership that can flourish when the time is right. To amplify his message, Geldart combines client referrals with strategic exposure through Forbes. Understanding the challenge of capturing a CEO's attention, he underscores the importance of consistent, value-driven engagement. By doing so, he aims to position the unlocking of human potential as a priority with significant returns for organizations. • Innovative Training Through Experiential Learning: Phil Geldart's use of a desert survival board game effectively engaged skeptical factory workers, demonstrating the power of experiential learning in transforming attitudes and behaviors. This approach laid the foundation for his successful career in developing innovative training methods. • Accessible Leadership Insights: Geldart's books, including "In Your Hands: The Behaviors of a World-Class Leader" and "EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING: Changing Behavior to Improve Performance," break down complex concepts into practical, easy-to-understand sections. These resources provide actionable insights for leaders seeking to enhance their skills and drive organizational performance. • Leveraging Thought Leadership for Impact: Despite initially resisting the label of a thought leader, Geldart recognized the importance of sharing his knowledge to add value to others. His strategic partnership with Forbes aims to amplify his message, reaching influential CEOs and helping them unlock human potential within their organizations.

AI is going to save the world. Or kill us all. Or another, secret, third thing. Trying to find a pattern of truth within all the cultural noise about Artificial Intelligence is pretty hard right now, so we turned to someone who has been working on and with AI since the 1980s. Jean-Louis Ecochard has been in on the development of everythting from caller ID and online banking to video conferencing and e-health, and was one of the people behind what became WebMD. He now heads up the Center for the Digital Nonprofit and is Senior Head of Innovation for Nethope, an organisation that acts as a bridge between large NGOs with Big Tech.  He's also a whole lot of fun, and helped us reframe our thinking about AI. In this episode, we asked JL about the dangerous intersection between capitalism and AI (of course we did), the ethics of big data and what, if anything, humanity has to fear from this latest great jump forward in technology. It's a fascinating conversation that we hope will help you think about this much-hyped subject in a fresh way. We should also make clear that, if we didn't like JL so much or think this might reflect badly on him, this is the title we would have gone for: See the kind of restraint we show? You are all very welcome.  You can find out more about the Center for the Digital Nonprofit, its mission and research here.  We also recommend The Eye of the Master: a Social History of Artificial Intelligence for a left-wing academic take of what, really, is being automated.    New to Beer Christianity? Welcome! Beer Christianity is an anti-capitalist, pro-BLM, pro-LGBTQ+, anti-imperialist, post-post-post-evangelical podcast where we drink a bit and talk a lot. Our aim is to be real, to be helpful and entertaining. Follow Beer Christianity on Twitter: @beerxianity and find us on Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.  Beer Christianity also has a newsletter in which Jonty and guest authors comment on the news, theological issues and stuff that matters.  Sign up to the Beer Christianity newsletter on Substack.  There's a connected Show With Music on Spotify called New Old Music. Check it out if you like eclectic music and weird chat. It's not terribly serious.  Jonty's novel, Incredulous Moshoeshoe and the Lightning Bird, is not available in all good bookshops, but if you bought it and left a review that would probably make that more likely.  We don't really want to preach at you, but some people like to know what we believe. It's this: Jesus Christ is the Son of God and came to teach us a better way to be while reconciling us to God and each other in a way we could never do without Him. He also changed water into wine. Nice.

How to build your brand during a cost-of-living crisis We talk to Donna White, Senior Head of Digital and Youth Marketing at The Prince's Trust    When times get tough the first thing that gets cut is often the marketing budget. So when we heard that The Prince's Trust was taking a creative approach to digital marketing during the cost of living crisis we had to find out more. We first met Donna White, Senior Head of Digital and Youth Marketing at The Prince's Trust when she gave a brilliant presentation about her team's work at the Charity Digital conference. So we invited her onto our podcast for a longer chat. Donna describes how she and her colleagues are using digital to affirm The Prince's Trust's place as a youth brand, reaching young people as well as older supporters and donors. We discuss her charity's canny approach to digital marketing during the cost of living crisis, focusing on partnerships, and how they are using data to be as efficient as possible about where they invest their efforts. Donna also shares her advice on the age-old challenge of making the case for marketing as a strategic, not a service function. We felt really inspired after talking to Donna. Her story shows that it's possible to build a brand, achieve great results and be creative even when money is tight. This fascinating and highly-participative webinar pits the audience against three ethical dilemmas. The webinar begins with our two panellists setting out some of the wide divergences they've found over the years in ethical decision-making and ethical standards-setting. These differences are often due to cultural factors, at a societal or a firm level. These differences are often due to different ethical frameworks. These differences are often due to greed or fear. Following the short opening discussion, the audience will asked to choose their actions for two different dilemmas, "Trading On Pandemic Information" and "Managing Client Assets During A Global Pandemic" [see videos below]. After the first choice, the expert panellists will try to change the audience opinion over a discussion of the group results before asking the same question again.
