The gays are running through all Seven Doors of Death as they jump into a brand new review of Lucio Fulci's gory and graphic classic The Beyond! If you're a fan of extreme horror and visceral gore we suggest you look (and listen) no further, because Roger and Troy are about to give this gnarly classic the extensive, in-depth discussion that it truly deserves! This episode is simply overflowing with goopy and gross content, covering topics such as prolonged death by tarantula mutilation, poorly placed mason jars full of acid, whether or not it's safe for a legally blind person to break into a full sprint, and the fact that there's no way that hotel could possibly hold 36 rooms. So toss on your favorite glass contacts and wander out into the middle of a nearby freeway with your service dog in tow, because the latest episode is coming at ya full-speed ahead! Back in ancient times, before Netflix and Amazon Prime, before Hulu and YouTube, even before DVDs and Blu-rays, if films weren't available to you from either your local video stores, or if you wanted to see an uncut print of a movie, or even one that wasn't released on VHS, the place you could find them would be in fuzzy gray market of the bootlegs. These types of vendors were a staple to a lot of the early movie conventions, where fans could find titles that never even knew were out there.  Some of us are old enough to remember being able to finally see the uncut full letterboxed version of Lucio Fulci's The Beyond, after years of suffering though only being able to see the heavily edited Seven Doors of Death. As your collection grew, you would usually start trading with others, increasing your collection even more, as well as helping to spread the love and passion of these amazing films. This is what we're discussing in this episode, so sit back and either reminisce with us, or learn about the good old days, when we were happy for a 5th generation grainy print of Anthropophagus that had the infamous fetus scene! Films mentioned in this episode: Anthropophagus aka The Grim Reaper (1980), Army of Darkness (1992), Bad Taste (1987), The Beyond aka Seven Doors of DeathT (1981), Beyond the Darkness (1979), Blood from the Mummy's Tomb (1971), Braindead aka Dead Alive (1992), Cannibal Ferox aka Make Them Die Slowly (1981), Cannibal Holocaust (1980), City of the Living Dead aka Gates of Hell (1980), A Cold Night's Death (1973), Dawn of the Dead (1978), Dellamorte Dellamore (1994), Emanuelle and the Last Cannibal aka Trap Them and Kill Them (1977), Faces of Death (1978), Female Vampire (1973), Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971), Friday the 13th (1980), Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974), The Ghost Galleon (1974), Guinea Pig: Flower and Flesh and Blood (1985), Hardware (1990), The Haunting (1963), I Drink Your Blood (1971), Jungle Holocaust (1977), Lady Frankenstein (1971), Mad Love (1935), Man Made Monster (1941), Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994), Meet the Feebles (1989), Mondo Magic (1975), Nekromantik (1988), Nekromantik 2 (1991), Night of the Seagulls aka Night of the Death Cult (1975), Opera (1987), Return of the Living Dead (1985), The Third Eye (1966), Tombs of the Blind Dead (1972), Zombie (1979)

When documentary photographer Greg Constantine describes immigration detention system in the U.S. as a prison system, he's not using his own words. He says every person he talks to about being detained, not only those who are detained themselves, but their family members, lawyers, advocates, and volunteers, refer to it as that. There are mass incarceration centers at the southern border and other places, but county jails all over the country are renting space to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement, contributing to what he says is a self-perpetuating, for-profit system.Constantine is presenting his photographs in a three-day pop-up exhibit called “Seven Doors,” the first of which is in Portland at Zidell Yards. He joins us to tell us more about the project he began in 2017, and the larger questions and conversations he intends to spark, including human rights, racism and the power of the state.

Amanda and Jenn discuss several geographically specific reads, COVID art, memories in sci-fi, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. Follow the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Feedback This Is Paradise by Kristiana Kahakauwila (rec’d by Carol) Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody (rec’d by Laura) A Painted House by John Grisham, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin (rec’d by Suzanne) Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings (rec’d by Rachel) Good Enough to Eat by Jae and Alison Gray, CW: it deals with real addiction and alcoholism (rec’d by Rose) The Library of Legends by Janie Chang (rec’d by Susan) Questions 1. My question is: can you suggest a mystery set in any of the remaining states? They are Alabama, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah. I’d like to accomplish this using unique authors for each state, so another Grisham, for example, would not work. Any kind of mystery will do, preferably somewhere in the broad middle between cloying cozy and gruesomely gory. I included my list so far for reference. Thank you! -Suzanne 2. What are your favorite books set in Mexico? I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and I loved it…and then I read Mexican Gothic, which I also loved up until the point where it made me gag (so much squick). Anyway, reading Silvia Moreno-Garcia has really piqued my interest in Mexico as a setting, and I’d love some recommendations for further reading. Thank you!  -Sara 3. For me, COVID art has been a really helpful way to cope in the last year whether it be music, TV, or written works that deal with pandemic realities head on. Because I work in the restaurant industry, I experienced only a very short quarantine period before being back out in the world, and I think I appreciate the aspect of getting on with life in the face of the ongoing trauma and fear and still finding plenty of joy in small moments. The only book I’ve found dealing directly with COVID (aside from specifically scientific stuff, which I’m far less interested in) is Intimations by Zadie Smith. What else is out there?  Thanks! -Carol 4. I’m looking for a recommendation for two very different sub genres of thriller. I recently read City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong and it reminded me a little bit of The Blinds by Adam Sternbergh. I wondered if you know of any other books like this “remote town, cut off from the rest of the world, group of people living there who have to be self sufficient but all have lots of secrets and a murder happens.” I also recently read One by One by Ruth Ware and I wasn’t a fan, I’m not looking for stranded people, as much as a group that chose to go live remotely and cut off from the world. Second, I’m currently reading The Seven Doors by Agnes Ravatan and I really like the Scandinavian setting. I also love the “is there something supernatural or is this just a thriller element?” The other book I loved similar to this was I Remember You: A Ghost Story by Yrsa Siguroardottir. This also had the remote Scandinavian setting with the “maybe” supernatural something happening. Any help in these two areas would be awesome!   -Heather 5. I love the show. I would really love a recommendation on rotten food I am not talking about the Netflix show, I would love if it had a variety of foods that as human beings we eat that are disturbing to others but as a culture it is acceptable as well as the process of how this came to be. For instance, where did we get the idea of cheese and how it was safe to eat or how balut became delicacy to eating casu marzu or even monkey’s brains. I want to find a book on all these fascinating foods and how they came to be introducing into a culture as well as an acceptable food something from all cultures. -Grace 6. I recently finished reading Mem by Bethany C. Morrow and really loved it and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What I loved about it is how it discusses the importance of memories regardless of how bad they may seem/ Mixed with the sc-fi, alternate history elements, and the amazing writing, this book is just everything I ever needed! Do you have any book recs with similar vibes/themes? Please, only fiction, and preferably under 350 pages. I also wanted to say that I really love this podcast and that I discovered many of my favorite books because of it. Keep it up! -Passant 7. I am looking for some book recommendations about marriages that are struggling in a fictional setting. Struggles that are not related to affairs or already at divorces door. I want to see the internal dialogue/conflict and how two people navigate a marriage that’s not full of love anymore and can hopefully come back from that. Thank you so much for all the hard work you guys do to help us readers find what we’re looking for! You are much appreciated and needed -Alexis Books Discussed Alabama: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins Utah: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff (cw: homophobia) Kingdom Cons by Yuri Herrera, transl Lisa Dillman The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea (tw: rape, child abuse) The Premonition by Michael Lewis Together, Apart, by Erin A. Making photographs regarding the important social issues of our day should not only be in the hands of photojournalists working for large news organizations. Greg Constantine and Monica Lozano, our guests on this week’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast as well as past guests of our program,  distribute and exhibit their work outside the familiar “news” outlets. Both use their photographic work to address the stories of migrants, and both have spent the last two years documenting the human consequences of the United States’ ever-changing immigration policies. We welcome them back to discuss the specific work they have produced and how they disseminate their images. Monica Lozano is a respected fine art and documentary photographer who grew up in Texas and Mexico. Her work deals with issues of immigration, normally from a slightly abstracted and decontextualized, yet emotionally powerful, vantage point. For her recent series, “The Camps,” however, Lozano went directly to the refugee camps that began to appear in her hometown of Juarez, Mexico in 2019. Her images tell the stories of the stranded asylum seekers by documenting the conditions they lived in and the community they developed. We speak with Lozano about her working process before and during the COVID pandemic. Greg Constantine, prior to joining us on a 2018 episode, had spent years in Asia documenting the Rohingya refugee crisis and other “stateless” peoples. Over the last three years, he has worked on a project about the U.S. immigration detention system. With grant funding and his own money, he has traveled the country creating a comprehensive yet personal document, taking photos and videos, and interviewing numerous detainees and their families. His work came to fruition in the journal Seven Doors, which has an online component, a print version, and exhibits in pop-up shows. We speak with Constantine about the difficulty and pride of being his own “author,” about grant writing, about using FUJIFILM and Mamiya film cameras, and about the value of giving away magazines and being a part of a larger community of image makers. Both Constantine and Lozano are moved by the injustices they see and have made it their lives’ work to document them and to tell the stories of those most vulnerable, and it is our pleasure to shine a light on their hard work. The doorway of study is something that helps us in our discovery of self. If we don’t take any time to study the wisdom that has been shared by others, we can become trapped in our own limited beliefs. Learning what others have shared about spirituality opens our minds and sometimes leads us deeper into our own understandings. There is so much wisdom that has been passed down through the ages that to reject what has been shared would be a loss. In our study I also feel its important to look at the whole picture. Often groups only stay within the confines of their own circles. This too can become a limitation in our growth. Reaching out to other systems of thought and worship has its place in our discovery of what self.

Prayer positions us to look to God. This can provide powerful results in our life. For when we look to God, we find God resting in our lap. Thomas Keating teaches this in his practice of Centering Prayer. In his lifelong discovery of what self, Thomas concluded that we only need to approach God or look to God and by doing so, God comes all the way to us. There are two sides of prayer. One side is that we talk with God and the other side is that we listen. In this podcast I will go deeper into these two sides.

Im Cast besprochene Spiele: Wish Upon A Star, Word For Word, Dyo, Zelda Sudoku, High Rise, Utopias, If Found, State Of Decay 2, Bruises, Seven Doors, A Solitary Spacecraft

The doorway of service aids us in our discovery of self as it creates many opportunities for us to learn, meet new challenges and develop strong bonds with others. We all have gifts to share and serve the world with, often it takes courage and willingness to embrace our gifts.Below are the three aspects that come into play as we learn how to serve. Mastering these three aspects helps us extract a richer experience out of serving others and the world.Three aspects to Service are:• Arresting self• Surrendering to the moment • Giving with an open heart The results of my service have given back more fruitful rewards than the fulfillment of my expectations could ever provide.

Seven Doors of Self Discovery: The Door of SurrenderIn this session I explore the door of surrender. Surrender is the ability to let our mind go. There are many opportunities for us to master this in our lives. When we reject what is, for a position in our mind, we remove ourselves from our peace and may be missing all the blessings that surround us. Surrender is a transient door that we pass through for many times after we surrender, we find ourselves in the door of silence or love. Surrender promotes grow and change, if we stay stuck in what we think we know we may never discover a deeper truth about life and the true nature of our soul. There are many aspects to lead us to our self discovery. The Seven Doors of Self Discovery are: Love, Surrender, Silence, Service, Prayer, Study and Gratitude. These are not the only doors that we find self discovery however, they are some of the main ones that we pass through. Over the next seven episodes we will explore each of these doors. In this episode we begin with the door of love. Behind the door of love, we make our greatest discoveries. Love holds the deepest wisdom of all the doors. Behind the door of love, we find ourselves at the heart of all the other doors.

We reviewed these films out of order and compiled all 3 reviews into one special bonus episode of the Last Roundup Horror Show. The "Gates Of Hell" trilogy is an unofficial "trilogy" consisting of three Lucio Fulci films: City of the Living Dead (1980 film), AKA The Gates of Hell, Twilight of the Dead, and Paura nella città dei morti viventi The Beyond (1981 film) AKA L'aldilà and Seven Doors of Death The House by the Cemetery (1981 film) AKA Quella villa accanto al cimite CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD: In this gory Lucio Fulci splatter film, a reporter and a psychic race to Dunwich to close the Gates of Hell after the suicide of a clergyman caused them to open, allowing the dead to rise from the grave. THE BEYOND: Louisiana's haunted Seven Doors Hotel has been home to a string of bizarre and supernatural tragedies, beginning with the lynching of a warlock in the hotel's cellar in 1927. When a young woman tries to re-open the hotel, she inadvertently opens one of the "Seven Doors of Death", allowing the dead to return to Earth. THE HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY: A plot that revolves around a series of murders taking place in the Oak Mansion – a New England home which happens to be hiding a particularly gruesome secret within its basement walls.

What makes a photographer follow their moral compass and photograph the stories they feel need to be told, no matter what the personal costs? Furthermore, how do they do so without the support of a news outlet or even an agency to distribute that work?  And then, what if they decide to shoot primarily with black-and-white film?! On today’s episode of the B&H Photography Podcast, we speak with Greg Constantine, who made and continues to make these decisions. In this affable conversation, we find out what prompted Constantine to pick up a camera and how he made the subject of “statelessness” a recurring theme in his work. We also learn why he continued to shoot film, even after digital became the more affordable and accepted format, and why the more established route of assignments for news outlets was not the best path for his storytelling. We also discuss the financing of his work through a combination of grants, commissions, and out-of-pocket spending, the obstacles to exhibiting documentary photography, and ultimately, the satisfaction of seeing the positive impact his work has had. As mentioned, Constantine’s work documents oppressed communities, and he has lived and traveled extensively in Asia and, more recently in Europe, to follow stories of migration and persecution. Specifically, he has worked in Burma with the Rohingya people, with the Nubians in Kenya, and with communities around the world that live without the basic right of citizenship. His current project, Seven Doors, has brought him back to his home country to document stories on immigration detention. Constantine’s work ultimately did make it into well-recognized newspapers. He has published books and won awards, and his work has been exhibited in the halls of the U.S. Capitol Building, but he continues to press forward—guided not by credit lines, but by the desire to grow as a photographer, to be inspired by the people he photographs, and to tell the stories that demand to be told. Join us for this inspiring conversation. Guest: Greg Constantine Photograph: Greg Constantine

On this episode, resident horror buff Colin subjects the group to The Beyond (1981, aka The Seven Doors of Death) from "the Godfather of Italian Gore", Lucio Fulci. No eyeball is safe as a woman inherits a New Orleans hotel that's been built on one of the Seven Gateways to Hell. Plus, there's face-eating tarantulas, exploding heads, and a full on surprise zombie apocalypse! Special guest Sean joins us for a post-film discussion as we talk about Italian horror cinema, and we find out how The Beyond connects to Sam Rami's Spider-Man!
