Canadians' biggest fear for the country's future is “growing political and ideological polarization,” according to a 2023 EKOS poll. As part of our series, IDEAS for a Better Canada (produced in partnership with the Samara Centre for Democracy), host Nahlah Ayed headed to the fast-growing city of Edmonton to talk about the creative ways local residents are working to find common ground. From video games to an engagement technique called “deep canvassing” used to bridge gaps across differences, we can learn a lot from Edmontonians on how to build a better democracy for Canada.

Jennifer Lash on Mark Carney's Election As The Liberal Party's New Leader

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - On Sunday, March 9th, the Liberal Party chose Mark Carney as their new leader. While there have been no polls taken since his election, EKOS carried out a survey just prior to the Convention that suggests Carney may be able to lead the Liberal Party to a majority government. 42% of the respondents between March 2 and 5 chose the Liberal Party, while the Conservatives slipped back to 33%. The NDP was at 13% and the Greens 4%.  Cortes Currents reached out to Jennifer Lash, the Liberal candidate in North Island Powell River for her perspective. “I am so thrilled with the results of the leadership race last night. I think that Mark Carney is the right person at the right time, not only for the Liberal Party of Canada, but for all of Canada. He brings a level of expertise in terms of how to handle the economic chaos caused by donald Trump at the exact time that we need it,” she said. “I also think that the overwhelming support that he received, almost 86 percent of the vote shows that the Liberal Party is united. There's aren't factions. There's no infighting. We are united. We stand by him as our leader, and we're really looking forward to the next steps. One of the things I've found so fascinating about Mark Carney, when I've been talking with people on the street, on the phone, on social media, is just how much he is drawing people in from across the political spectrum.” “So people who have historically voted NDP, people who have been considering voting Conservative, they're all starting to look at the Liberal Party under Mark Carney's leadership as a really good viable option and for exactly what Canada needs right now. There's a lot of momentum growing and i'm really hoping that people continue to explore and Learn more about the Liberal Party . If they have any questions or any concerns or want to talk with me, they can always learn more about what I feel the Liberal Party can do for North Island Powell River at jenniferlash.ca."

Polls Suggest Gap Narrowing Nationally, And In Our Riding

Roy L Hales/Cortes Currents - After trailing far behind in the polls for the better part of two years, the Liberal party's propects appear to be on the rise nationally, and the gap between the Conservatives and NDP is narrowing in our riding. Canada's two leading political forecasting websites, 338Canada and CBC's poll tracker, still show the Conservatives in the front, but no longer predict a Conservative majority. Last week Ipsos and EKOS both released polls showing the Liberal party edging into the lead. However Innovative Reseach, Abacus Data, Leger, and Nanos all reported the Conservatives were still ahead. On Thursday, CBC's Poll Tracker reported the weighed average of all these polls showing the Conservatives still had 40% of the popular vote, the Liberals trailing with 31%, NDP with 14% and Greens had only 4%. 338Canada's projection, released Sunday, March 2, showed the gap narrowing. The Conservatives were still leading, but with 39% of the popular vote to the Liberals 33%. The NDP and Greens remained unchanged. A special feature of 338Canada's projections is they give breakdowns for every riding. North Island-Powell River is still regarded as a safe Conservative seat, but the gap between the two leading parties shrank 5% during the past week. The Conservatives now have 47%, NDP 29% and Greens 6%. If there was a Liberal candidate, 15% of the population may have chosen her or him. As there is no Liberal candidate, a significant number of those people would probably choose NDP. If they all did, there would only be a 3% gap between the Conservatives and NDP. Given the speed in which the political situation is changing, it is important to realize that none of this data was collected after Tuesday, February 25. On a National level, the gap between the two leading parties has most likely narrowed. Similarly, the NDP are probably doing better than what the projection shows for North Island-Powell River.

In this episode, host Dr. Chris Beck interviews Dr. Robert Lookstein about the pulmonary embolism response team (PERT) approach for treating acute pulmonary embolisms (PE). Dr. Lookstein is a practicing interventional radiologist in New York City at Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine. --- CHECK OUT OUR SPONSOR Penumbra Lightning Flash https://www.penumbrainc.com/products/lightning-flash/ --- SHOW NOTES We begin the episode by learning how Dr. Lookstein became involved in the PE space and how acute PE management has evolved. Dr. Lookstein breaks down the PERT at Mount Sinai, PERTs at other academic institutions, and the core qualities of a strong PERT. He walks us through a typical PE presentation, the process of PERT activation, and the workup with risk stratification. Dr. Lookstein also shares a few physical examination pearls for evaluating patients with PE and teasing out acuity vs. chronicity of presentation . Dr. Lookstein and Dr. Beck discuss endovascular PE interventions - ultrasound accelerated thrombolysis (trade name: EKOS catheter, Boston Scientific), first generation and second generation thrombectomy systems. The doctors also cover how advancements in technology have made these large-bore thrombectomy devices easier to learn about and use. Looking towards the horizon, Dr. Lookstein shares what we can expect from third generation technologies. We highlight how the primary endpoint of the PERT is to relieve the strain and stabilize/preserve the function of the right ventricle, regardless of how much clot is removed/remains. The doctors discuss the possibility of combined treatment algorithms for PE and the clinical data that has guided PERTs (all linked in resources below). To conclude the episode, Dr. Lookstein shares follow-up, longitudinal care, and how to tackle clot-in-transit. --- RESOURCES PERT Consortium: https://pertconsortium.org/ Ultima Trial: https://www.bostonscientific.com/en-EU/medical-specialties/vascular-surgery/venous-thromboembolism-portal/pulmonary-embolism/clinical-data/ultima.html HI-PEITHO Trial: https://www.bostonscientific.com/en-EU/medical-specialties/vascular-surgery/venous-thromboembolism-portal/pulmonary-embolism/clinical-data/hi-peitho.html CANARY Trial: https://www.acc.org/Latest-in-Cardiology/Clinical-Trials/2022/10/25/19/42/CANARY PE-TRACT Trial: https://evtoday.com/articles/2023-feb/pe-tract-a-closer-look STORM-PE Trial: https://pertconsortium.org/storm-pe-trial/ PEERLESS II Trial: https://ir.inarimedical.com/news-releases/news-release-details/inari-medical-announces-peerless-ii-randomized-controlled-trial

When the Enterprise travels to the planet Ekos to search for a revered Federation historian named John Gill, they discover that the entire planet has fashioned itself after the Nazi regime of old Earth -- and Gill is their "Fuhrer." What's worse, the Ekosians are already in the process of rounding up immigrants from their neighboring world of Zeon for extermination, and they are about to launch a full-scale attack on that planet to wipe the out the Zeon race completely. In order to avert the attack, stop the genocide and get to the bottom of why Gill would so blatantly violate the Federation's Prime Directive of non-interference, Kirk, Spock and McCoy must earn the trust of the underground resistance -- but time is running out. As one of the weaker entries of the otherwise stellar second season, "Patterns of Force" served as evidence that "Star Trek" was starting to get stuck in a rut -- another parallel Earth story, another variation of the Prime Directive -- not to mention the fact that the premise itself was totally absurd. But even a problematic episode such as this one still has its merits, the most important of which are its messages, specifically that "absolute power corrupts, absolutely," and that if we do not learn from our mistakes, then we will be condemned to repeat them. Plus, it's "Star Trek," and even when the episode isn't great, we still love watching our beloved heroes Kirk, Spock and McCoy do their thing. You can support Enterprise Incidents right here: https://anchor.fm/enterpriseincidents (Just think of it as a “Tip Jar”) You can follow Enterprise Incidents at: Facebook https://www.facebook.com/EnterpriseIncidents Twitter @enterincidents Instagram @enterpriseincidents Follow Scott Mantz @moviemantz on Twitter and Instagram Follow Steve Morris @srmorris on Twitter and srmorris1 on Instagram --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/enterpriseincidents/support

The weather is getting warmer and more people are spending time outside...including, door-to-door salespeople. But not all of them have the best intentions. Our guest Russ Courtney says door-to-door utility and mortgage scams are on the rise in Ontario. So, what should you look out for the next time you hear a knock? Russ Courtney is a senior media relations and digital officer with Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario. The federal government is set to unveil its Emissions Reduction Plan this week to achieve its net-zero targets. As Canadians wait to see what the strategy has in store...a new EKOS poll says the majority of Canadians support greater protections for the country's forests. The survey was commissioned by a coalition of environmental groups, including Nature Canada. We speak with Graham Saul, the organization's Executive Director Yesterday Inuit and Metis delegations met with Pope Francis in Rome. It's the first time Indigenous people living in Canada have met with the leader of the Catholic Church since 2009. Kyle Muzyka is Metis from Treaty 8 and a reporter with CBC Radio. He's in Rome this week to cover the meetings. And a warning...this story is about Residential school survivors and maybe traumatic to some listeners. When the Taliban took control of Afghanistan last summer, it promised girls could continue to get an education. But last week — it reversed that decision, barring young women above the sixth grade from attending school. Kubra Zaifi completed her undergraduate degree in Afghanistan before coming to Canada. Now she's trying to bring her two nieces -- a medical student and an engineering student -- here...so that they can complete their studies. This afternoon Environment and Climate Minister, Steven Guilbeault, will unveil details of the federal government's Emissions Reduction Plan. The plan will map out how the government intends to meet its targets...goals which were set last June in the Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act. We are joined by Jordan Press for more. He is a National Affairs Reporter with The Canadian Press. It's taken nearly a year - But Ontario has struck a deal with the federal government on childcare. The plan is to cut child-care fees in Ontario in half by the end of this year and hit an average of 10 dollars-a-day by 2025 or 2026. To get there, the province will create tens of thousands of new childcare spaces -- a mix of for-profit and non-profit. Karina Gould signed the deal yesterday, alongside Ontario education minister Stephen Lecce. Gould is MP for Burlington and the federal minister of families, children and social development. Spring is officially underway. And after another long winter...we're ready to usher in the longer days...and enjoy the sunshine and the green grass. For many of us, the season of renewal prompts us to do a thorough spring cleaning at home. But it can also be a good time to take stock of our mental health...as well as taking steps to unburden our anxious, stressed and information overloaded brains. Dr Sean Weaver, CEO and founder of Ekos, is a pioneer in using carbon credits to fund indigenous forests, at scale. Which is handy, because we need them. The Climate Change Commission says we need fewer cows and many thousands of hectares of trees, exotic and native. Carbon farming appears to provide an effective mechanism to get there. Landowners plant trees on what was once pasture and sell carbon credits through the emission trading scheme or to involuntary markets. Lovely. But should we be careful what we wish for? Are we creating a perverse incentive to simply carpet New Zealand in fast growing, cheap pine forests that later become homes to pests, pose fire risks and smother native regeneration? Could carbon farming as we know it now, create a new set of problems down the line?Check out Sean Weaver and Ekos here

Patterns of Force was the twenty-first episode of Star Trek's second season to air, with a Federation observer leading an alien world to create their own version of the Nazis. In this episode Gerry and Iain discussed whether there is any problem to which resurrecting the Nazis would be a good solution. Travelling to find what has become of Federation observer John Gill (David Brian), Kirk and Spock find themselves on the planet Ekos, where the natives have surprisingly developed a carbon-copy of Earth's 20th century Nazi Party, dedicated to eliminating visitors from the neighbouring planet of Zeon, then destroying Zeon itself. With the help of underground Zeon resistance fighters Isak (Richard Evans) and Abrom (William Wintersole) and renegade Ekosians Daras (Valora Noland) and Eneg (Patrick Horgan) they look to discover the truth and take down the malevolent Melakon (Skip Homeier). Patterns of Force was directed by Vincent McEveety, his fourth of six Star Trek episodes. The writer was John Meredyth Lucas, with this the second of four episodes on which he received a writing credit. In this episode Gerry and Iain considered what the Nazis ever did for us. Elérhetetlenné válik a Föderáció kulturális megfigyelője az Ekos felszínén, a történészt kereső Enterprise ráadásul egy ellenséges rakétával találkozik, amikor a fejletlennek hitt bolygót megközelíti. Kirk és Spock későbbi terepmunkája során kiderül, hogy az egykori küldött az észrevétlen megfigyelés helyett durva beavatkozást hajtott végre, aminek hatására az ekosi lakosság a II. világháborús nemzetiszocialista rendszer pontos mintájára kezdett működni, a történész ráadásul saját maga lett a Führer az idegengyűlölő államszervezet élén. Aktuális adásunk témája ’A negyedik birodalom’ című epizód. Rövid hírszekció: • Chris Pine lehet a következő Simon Templar a Paramount Angyal rebootjában? Vajon ő lesz Kirk a következő Star Trek mozifilmben? • Az ellenállás főhadiszállása a ‘The Devil in the Dark’ díszleteiből lett átalakítva; Kirk, Spock és Isak például egy horta alagúton keresztül érkeznek.

Episode 2: Oren Friedman interviews Ken Rosenfield on catheter directed lytics. Oren Friedman MDAssociate Director, Cardiac Surgery ICU Pulmonary Critical Care Cedars-Sinai Medical Center Ken Rosenfield, MD, MHCDSSection Head, Vascular Medicine and Intervention Division of Cardiology Mass General Hospital   What is catheter directed thrombolysis (CDT)? Placing a catheter via femoral or IJs into pulmonary arteries and infusing low dose thrombolytic over extended period. Percutaneous mechanical thrombectomy differs as it involves extracting thrombus from pulmonary artery. (mostly from proximal pulmonary arteries, and no thrombolytic regimen used in this method) MOA of CDT compared to peripheral systemic thrombolysis More clot bound thrombolytic directly into the clot compared to around the clot with systemic tPA. Increased local thrombolytic concentration. Reduced tPA and longer duration of infusion—reason for increased safety profile for ICH and major bleeding compared to full dose systemic tPA. (dose is 100 mg, ICH rates 3-5%) CDT also allows improve tPA infusion to into distal pulmonary circulation bed. (Vs percutaneous mechanical embolectomy) Technical aspects of CDT: Pulmonary angiogram is not always needed at time of CDT or post CDT. Decision to place unilateral or bilateral catheters (right, left or both branches of pulmonary artery) depends on location of clot based on CTA. Patient are usually monitored in ICU while drugs are infusing, close monitoring and experienced clinical nursing staff should be involved. Heparin during CDT: fix dose 300-500 unit/per catheter sheaths. Hard to achieve targeted aPTT (40-60) given very short duration of infusion. Fibrinogen to guide tPA duration- limited to no data Catheter directed thrombolysis with (EKOS) ultrasound or without ultrasound: We just don’t know. The available data stems from prospective clinical trials with ultrasound catheters. Sedation: be careful with sedation. Use minimum. Avoid intubation for procedure itself. What is successful CDT? Goal is to improve hemodynamics, not to remove all thrombus. Drop in pulmonary artery pressures (if monitoring available) or improved RV/LV ratio in pre-vs Post intervention imaging. [Echo or CTA] Data on CDT Impact on RV/LV ratio, as primary goal of improvement in many trials (see Table below) ULTIMA trial: Heparin Vs CDT, with EKOS catheters. Rapid normalization of RV/LV ratio compared to heparin alone in immediate period. No difference at 90 days. Small numbers to show impact on mortality. SEATTLE II trial -- also included massive PE patients. PERFECT registry: prospective registry showing safety and efficacy of CDT. OPTALYSE trial: compared different CDT dosing regimens. Impact on long term disability like CTED or CTEPH remains to be seen. Dosing regimens for of CDT: (See Table below) Higher risk bleeding patients: use as low as dose possible. OPTALYSE trial: Lower dose (as low as 4-8 mg) and shorter duration are effective for hemodynamic improvement. Higher doses were associated with better Miller clot burden improvement with increased risk of bleeding. (2 ICH incidents) Rali P, Criner J. Am J Respir Crit Care Med. 2018 Sep 1;198(5):588-598

INTRODUCTION: Ben, Steve and Jamie dive right into a marathon session, to be broken up into two episodes. We get a surprising update from Steve regarding the health of his car and then Ben shares some gifts from down under. After rhapsodizing about his early experiences with beer in Australia, Ben has finally been able to score some beer from the brewery that started him on this path. He shares some Little Creatures Pale Ale with the crew: These came from a land down under. Sampling these beers leads to a wider discussion regarding Australian beer culture, brewing on the West Coast in the 90's and global beer trends. NEWS: After reaching a breaking point over the last week Christian fired off an email to the company that created our brewery management software expressing his frustration. A bit of the email text appears below: WHY HAVE YOU BROKEN EKOS!?Seriously, I'm the Head Brewer here and there by the one utilizing the production aspect of Ekos. You have all broken that part to the point at which I no longer want to use the program. this major update is beyond terrible and one of the worst roll outs I've ever seen in software. Everyday I go to use it and something else is broken or bugged. Frustrated doesn't even begin to cover my emotional state. Software is here to make our lives easier, not drive us all insane. The previous version before this update was just fine and did all we needed it to do!PUT IT BACK! PLEASE!  We were surprised and happy to learn that the founder of Ekos wanted to fly out and meet with us to address our concerns. A few days later the folks from the company were here and spent hours with us in a show of some of the best customer service that I have experienced. They also sat down for an interview, which we have included in the podcast.  RECOMMENDATIONS: Jamie has been reading a book by Charles Brandt called "I Heard You Paint Houses" and it is fulfilling his interest in true crime, the mafia and the Kennedys.  Steve recommended a book that covers the oral history of the Seattle music scene, entitled "Grunge is Dead" and featuring interviews with many of the characters from the music world. Steve has also been watching the new season of Endeavour on PBS, and fills in the crew on his Anglophile tendencies. Chuck is reliving his youth and listening to the Mother Love Bone album Shine, so check it out!  CREDITS: Steve and Ben were joined by Jamie and Chuck, with equipment assistance from Jon. Do you have a business that is largely dependent on your providing services? How would you like to transition to sell products instead. That is what my guest today has done, transitioning from services provider to custom software developer. Greg Forehand is the founder and CEO of Ekos. Since starting the company in 2002, Greg has designed and developed software for some of the largest companies in the world. More recently, he has moved the business away from custom software development and is now focused on writing software used by craft beverage manufacturers such as breweries and distilleries. Since launching Ekos Brewmaster in the summer of 2014, the Ekos team has seen a very positive response from the craft beverage industry. With more than 500 craft brewery customers, Ekos Brewmaster has quickly become the most widely used brewery management software in the world. Greg lives in the thriving craft brewery community of Charlotte, NC, with his wife Kate, and daughters Maddi and Lilly. In our interview, Greg recalls the challenges of being mainly a services provider and how they made the conscious decision to focus on being a product company. Over time, they kept looking for the right opportunity to serve a small, underserved market. Early on, they explored building software to track raw materials in various agricultural areas. In the process of doing research, he reached out to talk to a few breweries about what raw materials they use and learned they had needs that were not being fulfilled. After lining up several initial breweries to advise him as industry experts, they began to build Ekos Brewmaster in an iterative fashion. Now in a mature state, the cloud-based software handles everything from purchasing of raw materials, planning of recipes in batches all the way through production processes, plus packaging, invoicing and accounting (with QuickBooks integration). Due to many industry regulations, the system also tracks a lot of information for tax purposes and compliance. Greg talks about different ways to bring an idea for software to fruition, especially if you do not have technical skills. These include hiring a developer outright or partnering with someone and co-owning the intellectual property. He also goes into detail about “pacing yourself” when going into a niche direction, in order to prove the business model works—as well as ensure you have the cash flow to support it in the early stages. One final note—let me give a special shoutout to Wicked Weed Brewing in Asheville, NC, for the Black Angel beverages we enjoyed when we taped the show!
