Doing It At Home: Our Home Birth Podcast
The 10 Best Things We Did For Our Home Birth Prenatal Care

Doing It At Home: Our Home Birth Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 4, 2024 37:20

Today we're talking about our top 10 list for prepping for our home birth. We found that these were the things that helped us throughout pregnancy - from the mental prepping to physical activity to some natural products and even spiritual and energetic exercises. We've been very keen on having the most powerful and peaceful home birth experience possible. And we know for that to happen, it requires some conscious and proactive action on our part. So here's a quick recap of the 10 (in no particular order of importance) for you: Working with midwives. Not just working with {amazing} midwives - but having hour-long prenatal appointments with them every time we met (which was a huge contrast from the hour-plus we would spend at the OBGYN - to physically meet with the doctor for an average of about 8 minutes). Chiropractic care. This came recommended by the midwives and boy am I glad I did it. It started as a habit of prenatal care for me, but ended up into a family affair and was something Matthew and I did together each week. Yoga. Tons of pregnant women sign the praises of prenatal yoga. It's mind, body, spirit alignment. And an awesome space to practice your breathing! Exercise. Beyond yoga, I “worked out” about twice a week, supplementing jogging (which I did up until 36 weeks pregnant), walking and other stuff to stay active. Pool. This is something I did not do enough. But swimming in a pool was such a glorious thing. I highly recommend it. Natural products. Here are some links to a few we mention in this episode: Slippery Elm -  https://www.thayers.com/product-category/slippery-elm-lozenges/Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics - http://earthmamaangelbaby.com/ Witch Hazel Pads - https://www.thayers.com/shop-thayers/premium-witch-hazel/thayers-original-witch-hazel-astringent-pads/ Nutrition. My biggest realization here was that I'm not actually eating for 2. Instead I kept to what I knew worked for me. Meditation. Specifically Hypnobabies childbirth hypnosis classes. I did the self guided route and have loved it. https://www.hypnobabies.com/ A supportive community. It truly takes a village to raise a child - and that process starts in pregnancy. Matthew and I have been so blessed with amazing, loving people to help us prepare for this epic journey of birth and parenthood. Working on yourself! I took as best advantage as I could have this time to think about the person and mother I want to be - who I want to model for baby Maya and how that's going to play a part in every other aspect of my life as well. I did it and so can you!   In this episode, I share:  How I handled getting diagnosed with cancer Finding a doctor that was right for me Going through chemo, radiation, and losing my hair Western and plant medicine The breast meridian grid, lymphatic drainage massages, acupuncture My healing process Finding support and asking for help Work with Jennifer 25% Off a Private Coaching Session  Sign-up for the Newsletter  Become a Member & Support the Illuminated Podcast Athletic Greens ~ Exclusive Discount  Resources From This Episode: Mederi Center - Holistic Health & Healing, Patient Care, Research, Education Texas Original Compassionate Cultivation ︱Medical Marajuana Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas is an incredible local organization that is here to help. Whether you need rides, housework done, financial help, or emotional support ~ they're incredible and understand. There's a lot of grants and financial assistance out there if you need it! They can help you navigate through ALL and ANY of this! https://bcrc.org https://www.instagram.com/bcrcoftx/ Mederi Center HERBAL TEA MIXTURE: 3 parts I. equal parts ~ hibiscus, fennel, uva ursai, lemongrass After you buy the herbs just go on and blend them together in a jar, mix them up, and then just scoop out what you need as you fill the loose tea into the large metal tea infuser. I buy all of my herbs at The Herb Bar on Mary St off of S Congress, they also sell Chaga Mushrooms as a tea and that's also great!  Brew it long & brew it strong! In a crockpot on low for 7hrs + I find is the best way II. Slippery Elm/Marshmallow Root Either one. Marshmallow Root is a Slippery Elm. This is a cold brew.  1TBSP : Quart (mason jar) filled with distilled water and kept for 24 hrs in the fridge. Drain & store. Slippery Elm is kind of mucusy for lack of a better word and it looks weird but it's fine, strain it after 24 hrs. III. To Drink Mix them 50/50 or 75 mix/25 elm - they are both super beneficial and I wouldn't worry too much about the balance. Serve warm. Drink as much as you want. It's such a great kidney flush and if you're experiencing any UTI like symptoms it will clear it right up. It's kind of dry but you can add Stevia or Honey to take care of that. BONE BROTH   This is such an awesome way to get nutrients when you don't feel like eating and it will really help to get your vitamins and minerals. I loosely follow Dave Aspreys recipe. You can get Grass Fed Beef Marrow Bones from most any Farmers Market. Richardson Farms takes orders and you can collect from Barton. 10lbs will make 3 - 4 batches. It goes a long way. If available I will also add chicken feet, egg shells from past eggs I've eaten. I keep them in the freezer, knuckles ~ really whatever goodness I can find at the market. And vegetables only for the last 12 hrs. IT seems like a lot but it's pretty easy. After I warm it to serve I always add sea salt, pepper, cayenne, ginger, turmeric. Yum! It will definitely need salt, other than that flavor it however you like. If you have any problems finding the recipe then let me know. If you take HERCEPTIN as one of your drugs ~ You must consume OLIVE OIL and OLIVES. IT helps the Herceptin to work better. Water   Water is so vital and with everything you hear nowadays I have taken an extra precaution and installed filtered water that is all throughout the house - including laundry, shower, and bidet! There's also a PH tap at the sink to get high alkaline water.  SUPPLEMENTS/NUTRITION   When I first got diagnosed I went to see an Integrative Wellness Coach, Carl Schmidt at Lake Hills Pharmacy, he was very knowledgeable about Cancer in general and got me onto various supplements; Paw Paw & Methyl Folate were crucial. There's great, short YouTube videos about Paw Paw and how it works to fight cancer cells. It was so hard for me to eat veggies and drink my green drink and all the “healthy” stuff while on chemo and I got to the point where I was too tired to grocery shop, cook, clean, and eat. Ask for help! People want to help you and you have to stay nourished. If you take HERCEPTIN as one of your drugs ~ You must consume OLIVE OIL and OLIVES. It helps the Herceptin to work better. I worked alongside the Mederi Foundation in Oregon - there's a lot of info online. They had access to all of my info; blood work, tests, etc. and they sent tonics and all sorts and that's how I got the recipe for the tea. MIND/BODY ~ SPIRITUAL HEALTH   This is a really important time to look after your spiritual and mental health. This is tough and it sucks. You've got to come to terms with the fact that you are down - and that's not easy. While you're laying down listen to something inspirational or calming, meditating, etc., whatever suits you. It's better than drowning in crappy tv and having that vibration bring you down. I recommend Deepak Chopra Soul of Healing Affirmations, The Secret of Healing both on iTunes and it's so awesome to listen to. The Soul of Healing is also a book and a DVD; it's really incredible. Abraham Hicks is also great to listen to. I think it's important to reaffirm that you can do this! Don't ever refer to the cancer as “my”. Do not own it. It's here and you have to recognize that but that's not what you are and that's not how you should own it. You'll get so much literature and books, etc. Read when you can but don't overwhelm yourself and don't look at the word cancer in various forms all over the house. Know what I mean? https://open.spotify.com/album/3rpDTnXBdaciYySxV1ElyH?si=1IvS7Z0WS3CCFQxjnq2BJg&dl_branch=1  Soul of healing Affirmations https://open.spotify.com/album/71M7hkvO8USA2Qlagia2be?si=O1opisxaTs6VurW8wprEcg&dl_branch=1  Soul of Healing Meditations  Chopra, Deepak. The Soul of Healing Affirmations Whatever you believe in - believe in it. Pray hard and pray strong. ACUPUNTURIST & HEALER   I have an incredible acupuncturist and healer, her name is Rama Chittajallu and her number is 512.293.5388 I saw her for a couple of years before my diagnosis. She is a Reiki Master, Acupuncturist, and a Dr. Master of Chinese Medicine - this is a great addition and balance to the Western Medicine.  PETS   I had my dog registered as an Emotional Service Animal (ESA) She loves everyone and is just a really special beast and my bestie. She eases my anxiety SO much and truly is my xanax. It's super easy to certify your pet online audit's like $80. Each episode I dive into certain topics and find out how it can be beneficial for our gut and our health. Today's episode, I am going over Slippery Elm and finding out why it can be so important for someone that is trying to heal their gut. Slippery Elm has the ability to help soothe our gut lining, which is important with IBD patients since their guts usually take a fair share of irritation throughout the day. My goal is to shed more light on this subject so that I can help other people like myself who may be dealing with an autoimmune disease and looking for ways to regain their health! I offer this information as a helpful tool, but should not be the deciding factor when it comes to your health. Make sure to always talk to your doctor first before making any changes. During this episode Jenn talks about the 5th Energy Center The Heart Chakra, how it effects the body and ways to open, balance and heal this energy center. The Heart Chakra The fourth chakra situated in the center of the chest around the area of the heart. This is the largest energy Center of the body and where all other six Chakras converge. Zodiac signs that are highly associated with the Heart Chakra are Aquarius 1-21/2-19 Gemini 5-22/6-21 and Libra 9-24/10-23. The Heart Chakra is the foundation of the astral body and the connection between our physical and our spiritual body. It is driven by love. Emotionally influencing forgiveness, compassion, empathy, and the ability to trust. An imbalanced heart center can manifest feelings such as loneliness, a lack of emotional fulfillment and difficulty accepting or giving love. Gone untreated for to long it can and will impact the lungs, circulation, the heart. and immune systems. If you feel as though you may have an imbalance Heart Chakra there are many ways to Clear, Open, and Balance Your Heart Chakra. You can spend more time outdoors, do your best to practice Forgiveness, randomly let someone know what they mean to you. You can also incorporate green/Pink in your prayer candles, clothing and or decor. You could repeat affirmations associated with aligning your Heart Chakra such as: "I am open to receiving all the love this would has to offer" "My emotions are balanced and in Divine Harmony" "I give Love Freely and Love returns to me Freely" If you are more drawn to prayer you can pray to Archangel Raphael for Healing, or any other Deity you feel closely connected to that is associated with Love and Healing. If crystals are more your thing, Jade is an ancient stone that has historically been used to attract all things associated with Love. Jade strengthens your emotions and assists in allowing Love to flow in and out of your life. If you are more drawn to work with essential oils, aromas and/or herbs or food you can associate Scents, oils and culinary products such as: Lavender, Lemongrass, Mint, Sage, Slippery Elm, Avocados, Dandelions, or any Leafy Greens. To Evaluate your Heart Chakra, you may want to ask yourself: 1. Is there personal time available and used when needed? 2. Is there an ability to forgive? 3. Is there sadness carried from a traumatic emotional experience that is unable to be released? 4. Are you able to let Your Higher Power balance what you have no control in? 5. Are you able to Trust in something unseen and from a Source of Good? --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Balancing pH http://learntruehealth.com/balancing-ph Balancing pH is an essential factor for optimal health. And there are so many other natural ways on how we can achieve good health through Holistic habits.  To teach us all about balancing pH, Kellyann Andrews is back for part 2 of our topic about creating wellness on a cellular level. Importance of Vibration Kellyann Andrews explains that when we are in a debilitative state or deep degenerative state, our vibratory level is at a very low frequency. As the health of our body goes up, there’s a lighter feeling within the body. We then can see the vibrancy come back. “The biggest thing we need to do is raise the vibration. And as we raise the vibration in our bodies and bring them together, we create a higher resonance. That’s what we need to do,” said Kellyann Andrews. “When the body is at a higher resonance, you are mobilized at a higher level of healing capabilities.” She also reveals that the thing that creates low resonance in the body is heavy metals. It is the heavy metals that are causing chaos frequencies in the body. How To Achieve High Resonance One way to keep the body at a high level of resonance is monitoring whether we are effectively balancing pH. Kellyann Andrews says if you test your saliva first thing in the morning, that will tell you what is happening in your biochemistry. You test your saliva to see what your digestive tract is doing. On the other hand, if you test your urine, that tells you what is happening at the cellular level. Through those options, you can see whether your lifestyle is affecting your biochemistry the right way or if it is affecting it at all. “When you test your PH first thing in the morning, you are likely to be more acidic because you had nothing to eat or drink all day. Monitoring your PH can show you what you are gaining or losing from your lifestyle choices,” Kellyann Andrews said. She adds, “Because many of us are on the path of wellness, we’re eating more alkalizing foods, as well as eating higher and more vibrational foods. We also avoid pathogen and chemical laden foods. A lot of the foods that we eat, even foods such as oatmeal are acidifiers.” Balancing pH Tests There are a lot of tests in the market to see if we are balancing pH. According to Kellyann Andrews, when it comes to balancing pH, aim for a number level of 7 or slightly above. Kellyann Andrews cautions against getting an 8 or 9. Otherwise, we’ll be too alkaline, and we can get other situations from that. “People who have cancer will be down at 5. The pH in the urine indicates the cellular pH. Whereas the saliva indicates the digestive tract,” said Kellyann Andrews. Acidity Kellyann Andrews stresses that our body cannot heal, repair or lose weight when it is acidic. When people are chronically ill, they will be acidic. And it’s not going to shift overnight. Therefore, it’s best to monitor yourself three to four days in a row so you can see a pattern. “If you did all the right things, then you’re going to be slightly alkaline PH. You’ll feel good. But it’s going to fluctuate like a roller coaster,” said Kellyann Andrews. “You’re never always going to be alkaline because life doesn’t work that way. Our stress levels are so undermining our body’s health. So that’s why you have to be your own best friend.”  Slippery Elm Kellyann Andrews highly recommends taking Slippery Elm which is a powder. When you put it in water, it creates this gelatinous substance. And when you take that internally, you slick your whole tract.   Turmeric is also a great thing to incorporate in your diet. Kellyann Andrews explains that when you drink something which turmeric, your whole tract absorbs the turmeric. It is one of the most awesome bitters you can take into the body. Plus, it helps shut down the harmful elements in the body that cause the inflammation and turns off the mechanisms. “When you put Slippery Elm in, it creates a barrier to stop the leaky gut. I get a cylinder tea mug and put warm water. Then put in first Mineral Matrix Goat Whey. Followed by Sunflower lecithin and turmeric. But you don’t want the soy lecithin because that’s GMO focused,” said Kellyann Andrews. She adds, “I drink half of it, so you get the minerals immediately then mix it up, let it sit for five minutes. When it turns into a gel-like mass, add more water and drink. That’s the part that will go through the tracts slowly. It will get rid of the bacteria, fungus, and bacteria.” Chlorella Chlorella is also what Kellyann Andrews highly recommends. She says it mineralizes and alkalizes the body. It is also a detoxifier and a binder. In effect, it pulls the bad content out like the heavy metals. Ideally, Kellyann Andrews says anyone who is doing chemo or has radiation should be using chlorella. Other Holistic Habits Kellyann Andrews strongly advises never to drink tap water. Facts show that babies have about 90% water but adults or the elderly have as little as 50%. In other words, most people are completely dehydrated. Affirming what numerous experts have advised, Kellyann Andrews also says to get some regular daily exercise. She says if you’re doing a yoga movement in a flowing kind of fashion, it can be very soothing to the body. As a result, you’re moving back into parasympathetic mode.  “Doing something like Shi Ba Fa is a whole set of moves that will tune up all parts of your body and create your core strength to come out and also your balance. It works on so many levels,” said Kellyann Andrews. “If you want to create some balance in your life, you have to create some pauses like meditating or praying. It’s about connecting to a different frequency.” She adds, “The biggest thing we can do is be sunny in the world. You have to create that at a cellular level, expand it out to a gland level, then to an organ level and a system level. You then become this glowing sun presence. Ultimately, be aware of what vibration you are sharing with others.”  Platinum Energy Systems For those who want more information about what Platinum Energy Systems is, check out their official website. She is always digging deeper into the core of “well-being” – on all levels.   Kellyann Andrews is a health coach by nature and trade. She does not have any specific certifications. She was at university and nursing school until a sudden family death which left her grief-stricken and devastated. Due to this experience, Kellyann Andrews stepped away from traditional medicine. Kellyann Andrews continued to educate herself by researching all areas of health recovery. This is now her life’s work – sharing discoveries and her recovery with others on the same path. When both parents died prematurely, and Kellyann Andrews suffered poor health, she was inspired to find ways of creating wellness at the cellular level. We preface this episode with a little disclaimer and I feel it necessary to include it here as well - WE ARE NOT DOCTORS OR MEDICAL EXPERTS AND WE ARE NOT GIVING MEDICAL ADVICE. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s get into some fun stuff. Today we’re talking about our top 10 list for prepping for our home birth. We found that these were the things that helped us throughout pregnancy - from the mental prepping to physical activity to some natural products and even spiritual and energetic exercises. We’ve been very keen on having the most powerful and peaceful home birth experience possible. And we know for that to happen, it requires some conscious and proactive action on our part. So here’s a quick recap of the 10 (in no particular order of importance) for you: Working with midwives. Not just working with {amazing} midwives - but having hour-long prenatal appointments with them every time we met (which was a huge contrast from the hour-plus we would spend at the OBGYN - to physically meet with the doctor for an average of about 8 minutes).Chiropractic care. This came recommended by the midwives and boy am I glad I did it. It started as a habit of prenatal care for me, but ended up into a family affair and was something Matthew and I did together each week.Yoga. Tons of pregnant women sign the praises of prenatal yoga. It’s mind, body, spirit alignment. And an awesome space to practice your breathing!Exercise. Beyond yoga, I “worked out” about twice a week, supplementing jogging (which I did up until 36 weeks pregnant), walking and other stuff to stay active.Pool. This is something I did not do enough. But swimming in a pool was such a glorious thing. I highly recommend it.Natural products. Here are some links to a few we mention in this episode:Slippery Elm -  https://www.thayers.com/product-category/slippery-elm-lozenges/Earth Mama Angel Baby Organics - http://earthmamaangelbaby.com/Witch Hazel Pads - https://www.thayers.com/shop-thayers/premium-witch-hazel/thayers-original-witch-hazel-astringent-pads/Nutrition. My biggest realization here was that I’m not actually eating for 2. Instead I kept to what I knew worked for me.Meditation. Specifically Hypnobabies childbirth hypnosis classes. I did the self guided route and have loved it. https://www.hypnobabies.com/A supportive community. It truly takes a village to raise a child - and that process starts in pregnancy. Matthew and I have been so blessed with amazing, loving people to help us prepare for this epic journey of birth and parenthood.Working on yourself! I took as best advantage as I could of this time to think about the person and mother I want to be - who I want to model for baby Maya and how that’s going to play a part in every other aspect of my life as well.
