Turner Classic Movies hosts a classic movie festival every year in Los Angeles. The theme this year was " Grand Illusions: Fantastic Worlds on Film ". Shaun Chang attended this year and shares his impressions.

April's gonna April, with a couple of forgettable action flicks we're mixed on as we wait for the summer blockbusters to arrive. We begin with "The Accountant 2," which is the sequel to "The Accountant," and if you forgot that 2016 movie even existed, you're not alone. Ben Affleck is back as a math whiz with a particular set of skills. Jon Bernthal co-stars. In theaters. Then, we catch up with "Drop," which several people asked us to review. It's another twisty, high-concept thriller from "Happy Death Day" director Christopher Landon. Brandon and Eddie chat about the newly revised and expanded edition of "Dark City Dames: The Women Who Defined Film Noir". The book chronicles Eddie's interviews with 6 of noir's greatest 'dames': Audrey Totter, Marie Windsor, Evelyn Keyes, Jane Greer, Ann Savage and Coleen Gray. The revelations they shared with Eddie are often humorous and poignant. Eddie shares his memories of each actress with Brandon and highlights several other women spotlighted in the expanded section. Eddie Muller, aka the “Czar of Noir,” is the host of Turner Classic Movies' Noir Alley. He is also the prolific author of novels, biographies, plays, films, and movie histories, including Dark City: Revised and Expanded Edition, the essential cocktail manual Eddie Muller's Noir Bar, and the children's book Kid Noir. He also programs and hosts the Noir City film festival series, curates museums, and provides commentary for television, radio, and DVDs. Her love of the movies has led her to many exciting projects including her recent book, "Connecticut in the Movies". We talk about her love of the state of Connecticut and its complicated history. We also spend time discussing her grandfather, the legendary Melvyn Douglas. Illeana Douglas has starred in films like Cape Fear, To Die For, Grace of My Heart, and Ghost World, as well as in TV shows like Goliath, Shrill, Entourage, and Six Feet Under. Douglas is the granddaughter of two-time Academy Award–winning actor Melvyn Douglas. A classic film lover, she hosted Trailblazing Woman for Turner Classic Movies and participated in many film documentaries, including CNN: The Movies and Kino Lorber's Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers, which she also executive produced and hosted. Her first book, I Blame Dennis Hopper: And Other Stories from a Life Lived In and Out of the Movies was named Best Pop Culture book of the year in 2015 by Entertainment Weekly.

Maureen Lee Lenker is an award-winning journalist who has written for Turner Classic Movies, The Hollywood Reporter, Ms. Magazine, and more. She is a Senior Writer for Entertainment Weekly, where she maintains a quarterly romance review column, Hot Stuff, in addition to covering film, TV, and theater. She is a proud graduate of both the University of Southern California and the University of Oxford. Maureen calls Los Angeles home, where you'll either find her at the beach or in a repertory movie-house, if she's not writing.

Documentary film director Laura Gabbert has made critically acclaimed films that deploy humor and emotion to tell penetrating, character-driven stories about American culture and society. Among her documentaries, Food and Country, premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival and was released theatrically in October 2024. Laura's film, Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles, explores chef Yotam Ottolenghi's collaboration with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She also directed City of Gold, which is about Pulitzer Prize winning food writer, Jonathan Gold. City of Gold was named by Vogue Magazine among their “65 Best Documentaries of All Time.”Additional feature work includes the documentaries No Impact Man, Sunset Story, and the short film Monument/Monumento. Her TV work includes the Netflix shows Ugly Delicious and Disclosure. Links to assorted local theater & book venues   China Mieville China Mieville, author of the Hugo Award winning novel, “The City and the City,” and the classic “Perdido Street Station,” in conversation with Richard Wolinsky in this archive interview recorded September 1, 2002. China Mieville is a British author of weird fantasy and science fiction, and a leftist political activist in Britain. Born in 1972, he began his literary career with an urban fantasy novel, King Rat, and followed it up with a novel considered now one of best fantasy works of the 20th Century, Perdido Street Station in 2000. This interview with China Mieville at the 60th World Science Fiction Convention in San Jose on September 1, 2002, shortly after the publication of his follow-up to Perdido Street Station, The Scar. Since then, China Mieville wrote a third novel set in that same Bas Lag universe as Perdido Street Station, Iron Council, published in 2004, and then moved on to other worlds with six stand alone novels, the most recent being a collaboration with Keanu Reaves titled The Book of Elsewhere, set in the BRZRKR comic book universe, published in 2024. A new novel is expected some time in 2025. his novel, The City and the City, which tied for the Hugo Award for Best Novel in 2010, was adapted for television by the BBC in 2018 and is now available streaming on Amazon Prime. On this episode of 8111 I talk with Craig Barron. Craig is an Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor, entrepreneur, and film historian with a groundbreaking career spanning over two decades. He has contributed to visual effects on more than 100 films and served as a founding member of the Visual Effects Society. Barron also spent nine years on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Board of Governors and was co-chair of the Science & Technology Council.At just 18, Barron joined Industrial Light & Magic during the "Star Wars" era, contributing to classics like The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. He later co-founded Matte World, an Emmy-winning studio that evolved into Matte World Digital, known for its innovative visual effects in films such as Batman Returns, Zodiac, Hugo, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, for which he won an Oscar and BAFTA in 2009.Barron co-authored The Invisible Art: The Legends of Movie Matte Painting, an award-winning book chronicling the history of matte painting. A dedicated film historian, he frequently lectures for AMPAS and Turner Classic Movies, collaborating with sound designer Ben Burtt to showcase the artistry behind classic films like Modern Times and Forbidden Planet.In recent years, Barron has worked as a visual effects supervisor at Tippett Studio and now serves as Creative Director of Magnopus, a cutting-edge visual storytelling company based in Los Angeles.It was a genuine pleasure to talk with Craig about his incredible career.

The upcoming general election has of course been on many peoples' minds, and what better way to work through the angst than by viewing how generations of artists have tried depicting politics on the big screen? Since early September, Turner Classic Movies has been airing some of the most political films to be released, with some examples being The Great Dictator and JFK. So for today's feature, Larry and LAist film critics Andy Klein and Christy Lemire talk about their favorite election-related movies, getting into what makes them so topical and worth looking back at following their initial release.

David Stenn has a good “day job,” writing scripts for television (like The L Word and Boardwalk Empire) but his passion is film history. He has funded restoration of films long thought lost or unavailable, including a recent “find” featuring Clara Bow. He is also the author of two definitive biographies, Clara Bow: Running Wild, first published in 1988 and Bombshell: The Life and Death of Jean Harlow. They are both “must-read” recommendations, along with his passion project, a documentary called Girl 27 that is now available free of charge on YouTube. And if his face or voice seem familiar, it's because he appears regularly on Turner Classic Movies.
