TITO JACKSON: The Jackson 5's Guitar Man of Motown

A Breath of Fresh Air

Tito Jackson, born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on October 15, 1953, in Gary, Indiana, was a pioneering musician, singer, songwriter, and guitarist, most famous for his role as a founding member of the legendary Jackson 5. Growing up in a musical family, Tito's talent became apparent at a young age. He was the one who introduced the guitar to the Jackson family's sound, which soon became an essential element of their style. Alongside his brothers Jackie, Jermaine, Marlon, and Michael, Tito helped the Jackson 5 skyrocket to fame with their groundbreaking blend of pop, soul, funk, and R&B. The Jackson 5's rise to international stardom began with their signing to Motown Records in 1969, leading to a string of chart-topping hits like "I Want You Back," "ABC," "The Love You Save," and "I'll Be There." Tito's guitar work, combined with the group's tight harmonies and Michael's magnetic lead vocals, played a key role in defining their unique sound. The band's infectious energy and innovative performances broke racial barriers in the music industry and laid the groundwork for future generations of artists. When the Jackson 5 left Motown for Epic Records in 1975, they reinvented themselves as The Jacksons, allowing more creative control and deeper involvement in the songwriting and production process. Tito contributed significantly to this new phase, co-writing songs like "Torture" and "Body," which showcased his evolving artistry. The Jacksons continued their success with hit albums and world tours, solidifying their place as one of the most influential musical acts of all time. Tito Jackson's journey as a solo artist officially began in the 2000s, as he explored his passion for blues, a genre that had always resonated with him. His debut solo album, "Tito Time," released in 2016, marked his return to the spotlight, blending contemporary R&B, soul, and blues with tracks like "Get It Baby" featuring Big Daddy Kane. This album highlighted Tito's smooth vocal delivery, skilled guitar playing, and his ability to adapt his style to modern music trends while staying true to his roots. His last solo album in 2021 "Under Your Spell" was a return to his blues roots and was many years in the making. Outside of his musical pursuits, Tito Jackson became a respected figure in the music industry, mentoring aspiring musicians and producing records for other artists. He also participated in reality TV and charity events, using his platform to give back to the community and raise awareness for various causes. His dedication to philanthropy and music earned him widespread respect and admiration beyond his family's legacy. Until Tito passed away at the age of 70, in 2024, he had continued to perform live, captivating audiences both as a solo act and with his brothers in The Jacksons. His energetic stage presence and infectious charisma reminded fans of the timeless appeal of the Jackson sound. He remained a vital link to the past while continuously evolving, influencing both contemporary and classic genres. Tito Jackson's journey from the Jackson 5's soulful beginnings to his solo achievements stands as a testament to his enduring talent, adaptability, and passion for music. His legacy is not just as a member of a legendary family but as a groundbreaking artist in his own right. Through his work with The Jackson 5 and as a solo artist, Tito's songs and brilliant performances will never be forgotten. This week we pay homage to the late Tito Jackson. I spoke with him recently and in this podcast, he shares stories from his fabulous career. I hope you enjoy the episode. If you feel like reaching out to me, I'd love to hear from you. Tito Jackson is part of one of the most talented musical families in history, the Jacksons. With the Jackson 5, their first four singles for Motown Records all went to Number One, including “I Want You Back,” and “ABC.”After leaving Motown in the mid-Seventies, Tito began showcasing his multiple talents, writing songs, playing guitar and keyboards on many albums, especially those of his family members. But, it wasn't until 2017 that he put out his first solo record, Tito Time. Now he's back with a brand new project, Under Your Spell, and it's star-studded affair, with contributions from Stevie Wonder, Joe Bonamassa, George Benson, Eddie Levert and more.We talk with Jackson about the project and how he coaxed legendary producers Gamble and Huff out of retirement to pen one of the songs on the new record. I Was Dead for 7 Weeks in the City of Angels. En 2013, además, reeditan su disco "Devil Came to Me", llamado "Dover Came to Me", en diferentes formatos.

Quotes: "I firmly believe that creativity comes through you and not really from you. I think are unique like minds and the way we think is like a filter. So when it comes through, you put your own stamp on the song, but I don't know where the creativity is coming from." "I get this point during making a song where I'm like, "oh, this is what it's going to be named" that actually helps you finish the song. I can kind of visualize where it needs to maybe go. You start a song and it's there but needs new it needs elements and you're not sure which direction you should take it to finish it. And I find that if I try to give it like a cool name, something with some meaning to me. That's like, "okay, so that's where I go with that" and add this and then it's easier to finish." "I was using Traktor at the time and I played a few shows like that and it worked out fine. I got up there and we had done a sound check. Then I dropped my first track and then everything froze. And so Traktor was completely frozen like I was gonna have to fully reboot." ⁣⁣⁣⁣#progressive #trance #techno #surrealism #consciousness #floattank @euphonic-records @kyauandalbert

40 Years of For You

dance / music / sex / romance is fast approaching its third year, so to celebrate, we're going...backwards? That's right, to mark the 40th anniversary of Prince's debut album, I thought now was the perfect time to go ahead with an idea I've been toying with for a while: our own sub-series of review podcasts looking at each of Prince's albums in isolation. I'm doing this for a few reasons. First, it's a way to bring those of you who have been listening to the podcasts but not reading the blog into the loop on my chronological Prince project--and also a way for me to work through some of these albums before I can get to it with my glacially paced writing schedule. Second, I've known from the beginning of this project that if I really wanted to do Prince's catalogue justice, I would need to incorporate more voices and perspectives than just my own. We all have our biases and blind spots, and as a Prince fan I am acutely aware that one person's sentimental favorite can be another's unlistenable mess (and vice versa). That's why I asked my friends Harold and KaNisa, both of whose encyclopaedic knowledge of Prince's career dwarfs my own, to join me. I think you'll find that our tastes and opinions both intersect and diverge in a lot of interesting ways, which allowed us--and hopefully, will allow you--to take a different perspective on some of these songs and the context in which they were created. I hope you enjoy this new approach to an album that remains underappreciated in Prince's catalogue. If you do, I hope you'll subscribe to the podcast on your streaming app of choice (iTunes, Stitcher, or Google Play), and if you're so inclined, leave a review! No matter what, thanks for listening, and see you again soon. 00:00:00   "For You” (1976 Recording) 00:01:01   Harold's Previous Appearance on d / m / s / r 00:01:10   The Prince Podcast 00:01:24   KaNisa's Tumblr 00:04:50   Duane Tudahl on d / m / s / r 00:06:54   "Soft and Wet” (from For You, 1978) 00:09:10   Here's Where to Read the Blog Entries on For You 00:09:19   The New Prince Issue of Wax Poetics 00:11:08   "I'm Under Your Spell" by Mind & Matter, written by and featuring the Artist Later Known as Jimmy Jam (1977 Recording, available on Purple Snow: Forecasting the Minneapolis Sound) 00:14:35   "Everybody Dance" by Chic (from Chic, 1977) 00:14:46   "Shame" by Evelyn "Champagne" King (from Smooth Talk, 1977) 00:15:15   "Mary Jane" by Rick James and the Stone City Band (from Come Get It!, 1978) 00:18:35   "The Closer I Get to You" by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway (from Blue Lights in the Basement, 1977) 00:19:04   "Too Much, Too Little, Too Late" by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams (from You Light Up My Life, 1978) 00:21:06   "You and I" by Rick James and the Stone City Band (from Come Get It!) 00:22:54   Now This is More Like It © Warner Bros. 00:23:10 Getting There © Warner Bros. 00:24:37 Prince Meets His Public, 1978 Photo stolen from Noisey 00:29:58 "Well, I'm going to pick up a flute pretty soon." 00:32:12   "Just as Long as We're Together” (1977 Recording) 00:41:28   "Funkytown” by Lipps, Inc. (from Mouth to Mouth, 1979) 00:48:47   "For You" (from For You) 00:56:10   "For You" (1976 Recording) 01:01:08   "In Love” (from For You) 01:12:40   "Soft and Wet" (from For You) 01:16:08   "Soft and Wet" (1976 Recording) 01:19:22   The Futurama Fry Squint 01:20:58   The Bonobo Statue that Scarred Zach for Life https://www.instagram.com/p/BFaMU6xSsMn/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link 01:30:00 "Crazy You” (from For You) 01:32:40   Zach's Original Post on "Crazy You" 01:38:55   "Just as Long as We're Together" (from For You) 01:47:27   "Jelly Jam” (1977 Recording) 01:52:25   "Baby” (from For You) 01:56:49   "School of Life" by Tommy Tate (1972 Single) 02:01:29   "Eye Hate U” (from The Gold Experience, 1995)

Join us as we discuss Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 7, “Once More, With Feeling” and Angel season 3, episode 7, “Offspring.” Superfans: Caitlin Newbies: Ariana, Mitch, and Kristen Fun Facts: Mitch wants to warn everyone not to watch Fear the Walking Dead because it’s completely unrealistic. Kristen shares that “Once More With Feeling” put her in a musical mood so she and Karen watched Chicago immediately afterward. Ariana recommends Andy Mack on Disney Channel for all kinds of reasons, including a storyline with a young boy discovering his sexuality. Caitlin binged Wynonna Earp this week. It’s a supernatural western about the great, great granddaughter of Wyatt Earp. Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 6, episode 7, “Once More, With Feeling”: -Synopsis -Joss was inspired by a Shakespeare reading at this house when everyone gathered around the piano. -The cast thought Joss was going to end their careers with this musical episode. They. Were. Terrified. -Ariana gives us her “real” fun fact. -The opening credits are shorter than usual and absolutely delightful. -The villain’s name is Sweet, which isn’t actually said in the episode. -“Going Through the Motions” was inspired by “Part of Your World” from The Little Mermaid. -Sarah Michele Gellar didn’t really want to sing, but when she learned how emotional the episode was, she relented. -Jewel was initially planned to do Sarah’s singing. -“If We’re Together” is the first group number, which lets everyone sing a little, and gets us used to the format. -“The Mustard” gave Kristen major “Nothing Suits Me Like a Suit” vibes, and featured writer/producer David Fury. -“Under Your Spell” was the hardest song for Joss to get through the network. It seems romantic, but it’s uncomfortable because of what Willow did the night before. -“I’ll Never Tell” has Anya and Xander laying out all their worries about their impending marriage. -They immediately run to Giles to get this musical thing to stop. -The woman getting a parking ticket is Executive Producer Marti Noxon. -Spike’s song, “Rest In Peace,” is basically what we think Buffy needed to hear from Spike. -Mitch is not a fan, but Ariana is totally here for this. -Dawn makes Tara aware of the fight/Willow’s spell. -Dawn gets kidnapped, so we only get two lines of “Dawn’s Lament.” -We have a chat about Dawn’s kleptomania. -Michelle Trachtenberg requested an extended dance number in place of extensive singing. -“What You Feel” introduces us to Sweet and starts us figuring out what is going on with this MotW. -Sweet reminds Mitch of Him from The Powerpuff Girls. -Sweet’s minions were waaaay creepier than Sweet himself. -Giles’ singing was wonderful in “Standing” (even if we got distracted by the stunt double and the green screen). -“Under Your Spell”/”Standing” Reprise gives us the answer to Tara’s question about the sprig she found under her pillow. She’s hurt and pissed. -“Walk Through the Fire” is Caitlin’s favorite, especially when Buffy kicks in the door. -“Something to Sing About” gives us the big reveal of the episode. We were all really affected by Buffy’s admission that she was in heaven. -“What You Feel” Reprise features Xander admitting that he summoned Sweet. -Sweet peaces out when he realizes it’s Xander that summoned him and he has no interest in taking him for a husband. -Spike leaves during “Where Do We Go From Here” and Buffy follows, which leads to the coda, and… -Buffy and Spike kiss!! -Favorite Scenes -Favorite Lines Angel season 3, episode 7, “Offspring”: -Synopsis -Pregnancy plot lines have a purpose! -Darla and Angel make a HUGE mistake in the flashback. -There’s definitely some flirting going on here. Thanks, Fred, for pointing it out. -“Moira is the gut physical attraction between two larger than life souls.” There’s definitely some moira going on here. -We are finally getting a good look at the real Fred. -Caritas is coming back. Lorne is rebuilding. -Fred gets her calculations a little off and Holtz is ...
