Jacob explains his view that drag is not inherently a queer art form, despite its strong historical connections to LGBTQ+ communities. He argues that drag has had many different meanings and associations over time, and that it should be seen as an art form like any other, rather than being essentialized as solely a queer or progressive expression. Jacob discusses how drag has adapted and maintained mainstream popularity throughout history and argues that RuPaul's Drag Race should be seen as part of this ongoing tradition of drag's mainstream appeal, rather than as a new phenomenon. Jacob discusses the present-day backlash against drag, particularly from social conservatives, and how this echoes historical debates and critiques of drag as immoral or unsuitable for children. As we come to the end of our mysterious and magical pursuit through the Victorian period, we're looking at an era that collectors are most likely to have pieces from. Today we're exploring the Aesthetic Era, which was led by radical artists and designers who wanted to break away from the strict norms and traditional morals of the time. Things have to be handmade. It was an environment where the crafts-person could make it from scratch to the finished product. - Matthew Weldon KEYWORDS #jewellery #queenvictoria #victorian #diamonds #victorianperiod #antiquejewellery #pearls
As we continue on our mysterious and magical pursuit through the Victorian period, we're taking a look at the mini-eras defined during the reign of Queen Victoria. Today we're moving on from the Romantic era into the Grand era, which began with the sudden death of Prince Albert and was defined by advancements in technology, travel and ancient inspiration. Matthew and Alyce explain the ways of the world during this time period and recognisable elements found in jewellery from the U.K., some which have origins further afield. They of course have some trade tips to help you discover and date pieces for your own collection too. This episode of ReligionWise features Dr. Lorenzo Servitje, Associate Professor Literature and the Director of the Health, Medicine and Society program at Lehigh University. Trained in both Victorian Literature and Public Health, he considers the way that culture influences and is influenced by questions of health, healthcare, and disease. In this conversation we consider the broader field of Medical Humanities, where it came from and why it is important. We then dig into his particular area of interest, monsters of the Victorian era, from Dracula to Mr. Hyde, asking what can they tell us about both historic and contemporary understandings of health, sickness, and treatment.Show NotesMedicine Is War: The Martial Metaphor in Victorian Literature and Culture(https://sunypress.edu/Books/M/Medicine-Is-War)The Not-So-Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde in Antibiotic Research: An Interdisciplinary Opportunity (https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33379290/)The Walking Med: Zombies and the Medical Image(https://www.psupress.org/books/titles/978-0-271-07711-6.html)

If you all can't tell, we are heading into our favorite season, and it seems this year the gift keeps on giving. Staying on that scary pop culture track, we find that Guillermo Del Toro's work will be gracing our screens a lot in the last part of the year. As well as Olivia Wilde bringing us a fresh take on the psychological thriller with "Don't Worry Darling" and Luca Guadagnino showing off a sample of his new movie "Bones and All." Then we jump into the past and learn about an obsession of Keri's with the secrets and not-so-secrets of poison rings and mourning jewelry and the art that went into making these one-of-a-kind pieces. If you're new in town or just new to this whole actual-play thing, you're tuning into "RIP The Ripper" a Vampire: The Fifth Edition one-shot set in Victorian Age London, bought to you by Lore By Night Productions. This one-shot was broadcast live on the World of Darkness Twitch channel on 19th December 2020 as part of its "Vamily Holiday" charity event. It was arguably one of the most popular actual-plays during the event. This podcast may contain scenes of violence and topics of disturbing natures. Viewer discretion is advised. Remember to judge the monsters, not the mortals portraying them. Our story begins on 24th December 1891. It is the very end of a time of our history called the Victorian Period, named after the then longest-serving monarch, Queen Victoria who held much of the world in a tight iron fist from that famous palace at the heart of the British Empire, the capital of The United Kingdom, the once Great Britain. As you travelled further East, the neat cobbled stones paths are replaced by shit and mud, colourful exotic buildings become dirty grey terraced shanties that dominate the claustrophobic streets of Whitechapel, famous for its violence, crime, overcrowding, sex and of course, Jack the Ripper, who has not killed anyone for some 10 months...allegedly. It is here, that our ragtag coterie is thrust into the task of stopping the Ripper once and for all. Our stunning cast for this actual play was: The Lore By Night Podcast Guy: ST and NPCs Ian : Samual Granger of Clan Tremere Fae The Pagan : Lilian Morgan of Clan Setite/Follower of Set/The Ministry Syriinx : Selina Davis of Clan Toreador Ellie Collins : Amelia O'Cleary of Clan Malkavian Zachary Vaudo : Maxwell Young of Clan Gangrel
Sophie (aged 7) and Ellie (age 5) tell the story of children in Victorian times. We learn what school was like (not very nice!), what jobs they did (yucky ones!) and what they did for fun.----more---- Ellie has a Victorian day coming up at school. She has to dress up as a Victorian school girl. So she and Sophie decide to explore what life was like back then. We start by learning about the huge changes that happened during Queen Victoria’s long reign. Incredible inventions like the steam ship and the telephone occur and huge changes like the growth of the British Empire happen. This is a time of enormous change. But the lives of children changes too. We learn how the lives of rich children and poor children are very different. Rich children are educated at home by the governesses before the boys are sent to boarding school. Ellie is outraged to learn that rich girls are rarely sent to school. Poor children are increasingly sent to school by Victorians. But the classes are huge. Sometimes 70 or 80 children in the class with only one teacher. As a result the teachers are very strict. The girls are fascinated by the punishments that the school teachers use - from lines to caning to a dunce cap. We also learn about the jobs that children used to do. Everything from cleaning up horse poo to clambering up chimneys or working in factories. Much of it is very dangerous or horrid work. But it’s not all work and no play. The Victorians invent the idea of a holiday. Children from the cities get to visit the new playgrounds of the seaside which are turned into fun resorts. More children’s toys are invented and a new type of book is written – the Children’s book. Incredible stories such as Treasure Island, the Jungle Book and Peter Pan are written. But when all is said and done the girls decide that Victorian life is not for them. It’s too strict and not fun enough. This episode has a strong link to Key Stage 1 (KS1) topic work. And in fact, both girls have studied the life of a Victorian child at school and dressed up as a Victorian child. A literary analysis of the Gothic/Romantic Novel written by Emily Bronte'. The connection of the single novel written by a young literary artist during the Victorian Period and the pre-feminist period. Two years prior to Emily's book, that was originally a flop, the proto-feminism wave had begun, and soon after Wuthering Heights would be a novel considered throughout the ages. Charlotte Ballet.org states the following examples of Withering Heights in Pop culture; "Though the novel is now considered a literary classic, Emily Brontë did not receive such praise at the time of its publishing. Wuthering Heights shocked the public, and critics mentioned it could not have possibly be written by a women. Being rejected by publishers, Brontë had to self-publish the 1847 novel and use a male name, Ellis Bell, as the author. The next year, 1848, she died at age 30 from tuberculosis, thinking that her book was a failure." https://charlotteballet.org/2017/04/07/wuthering-heights-in-pop-culture/ "The first “bad boy” of literature | Author, Christina Bartholomeo’s states Heathcliff is an unforgettable archetype and “is the original “bad boy”; without him, so many great bad boys of literature might not exist, from Dracula to Jay Gatsby to James Dean.” The Twilight Series – Eclipse | Stephanie Meyer, the author of the popular Twilight Saga novels, drew inspiration from each book in the series from literary classics: Twilight on Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, New Moon on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Eclipse on Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights, and Breaking Dawn on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. here are also many allusions to Wuthering Heights in her novels. Bella says it is her favorite novel and is worn out from reading it so much. In Eclipse, Bella and Edward both compare themselves to Catherine and Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights, as the love triangle between the two and Jacob relate to that off Catherine, Heathcliff and Edgar. Special Guest, Ella Han from Beijing. Ella will read a poem that she wrote in reflection to the poetry Emily Bronte has written as well as her famous novel, Wuthering Heights. I will give a brief analysis of the love and passion that Bronte builds to cause friction, revenge, resentment, love and passion with the theme of the story, the four seasons. How would you compare each of the love relationships to one of the four seasons? It's time to take the Victorian Period to even stranger places. Jess and Philippa discuss the emergence of the Victorian freak show out of the circus, looking at the lives of two of its stars: Oofty Goofty and Grady Stiles - also known as "The Lobster Boy". An overview of the Victorian Period in England
Happy Holidays, listeners! Today on the podcast, we’re taking a look at Christmas traditions. Decorating the Christmas tree, sending cards, and buying presents. Some of you may be planning (or fretting over) some of these activities at the moment, but where do these traditions come from? My guest, Dr. Melissa Shields Jenkins, explains that many of the traditions we take for granted during the Christmas season are rooted in the Victorian period. During the 19th Century, a kind of re-creation of Christmas took place, and the texts and images created during this period helped to not only shape the seasonal customs but also to inspire reflection upon the meanings of this holiday. Melissa Shields Jenkins is an assistant professor in the English department at Wake Forest University. She is also a Wake Forest University alum, receiving her BA in 2001 before receiving her PhD from Harvard University. She specializes in 19th century British literature and culture, the history of the novel, and gender studies. In 2014, she published a book called Fatherhood, Authority, and British Reading Culture, and is currently working on a book-length project called Habits of Sympathy in Victorian Britain. Originally from Charlotte, NC, she now lives in Winston-Salem with her husband Jaime, daughter Jaclyn, and two rescue dogs. I hope you enjoy our conversation and her readings of some great Victorian literature.
This special episode of Rippercast brings to you researcher Robert Anderson's talk given at the Whitechapel Society 1888's 2014 conference in Salisbury. His chosen topic was tertiary syphilis and its widespread presence amongst the prostitutes and their clients in the East End of London in the late Victorian Period. He discussed its symptoms, treatments, and how it may have affected victims and suspects in the Autumn of Terror. Robert's slide presentation, referred to in the podcast, can be downloaded here.
