Your 50K world record holder - Des Linden - is now an ultra trail marathoner, and you get the full breakdown here first! After a little catch-up time, Des and Kara go deep on the results from the Black Canyon 100K and 50K, with Des finishing 13th female in the latter race this past Sunday. They start with an overview of the 100K, which both of them spectated virtually. The races at the front were FAST with the course records going down on both sides, plus Molly Seidel earning a golden ticket to Western States for her 4th place finish. Then, Des shares her experience in the 50K race from start to finish including expectations, the trail community vibes, and a tough day that had her neck/back locking up on her in the final 3rd of the race. She got it done in spite of those challenges and is happy with the finish. Kara can relate b/c her trail debut at the Leadville Marathon was a tough day as well. All in all, this was a great learning experience for Des, and now she looks ahead to the Marathon de Sables. Then, they talk about the expectations at the Winter Olympics, especially for top American hopefuls, and wonder outloud if it is too much or misguided. Finally as usual, they close the show with a Top 5 that you won't want to miss. Everyone show Des some love for putting herself out there on the trails!

Send a textWhat happens when raw talent, relentless prep, and an unfiltered voice collide with a sport increasingly driven by optics? We sit down with elite trail runner and coach Michelino Senseri to talk wins, world teams, a headline-grabbing Grand Teton FKT, and what the culture gets wrong—and right—about mountain running today. It's an honest, funny, and deeply practical conversation that moves from emus on leashes to cameras on social trails, from pacer debates at Western States to how influencer marketing is reshaping who gets seen and paid.Michelino opens up about the craft of coaching: building durable athletes with VO2 work, smart plyometrics, and week-over-week progress you can actually feel. We dig into why human coaching still matters in an AI world, how accountability beats templates, and the difference between training that looks good online and training that actually moves the needle. If you care about performance, this is a masterclass in process over hype.We also go deep on injury and return-to-form strategy. Michelino breaks down living and racing with bulging discs, the tug-of-war between extension and decompression approaches, and what eight to twelve weeks of patient, consistent work can do for your spine and your season. Then we look ahead: CCC on the calendar, selective FKTs, a potential Grand Teton docuseries with too much story for a one-hour cut, and writing that may grow into a book.If you're tired of staged narratives and want the signal without the noise, this one's for you. Hit play for candid insights on coaching, culture, access, and how to stay grounded while getting fast. A thoughtful and educational conversation with Dr. Nab explores tremors, brain health, and the powerful connection between the gut and the nervous system. The discussion reframes symptoms as meaningful signals rather than issues to ignore, unpacking different types of tremors and potential root causes such as nutrient deficiencies, toxins, stress, and gut imbalances. With a functional medicine lens, the episode highlights the importance of early awareness, foundational lifestyle habits, and proactive brain care—showing how small, informed changes can support long-term neurological health and overall vitality. Key Takeaways: Symptoms like tremors are signals from the body, inviting us to look deeper rather than accept them as inevitable. Brain health is closely tied to gut integrity, nutrient status, and the body's ability to manage toxins. Foundational habits—movement, hydration, and whole foods—play a critical role in protecting cognitive health. Stress and nervous system overload can amplify underlying imbalances over time. Proactive testing and early awareness help put the odds in favor of long-term brain resilience and vitality. Was treibt Tara Dower an? Hört selbst. Days before lining up at Black Canyon 100K, Francesco Puppi sits down with Moisés Jiménez and Max Keith for a deep dive into training philosophy, double-threshold blocks, and what he learned from living and training alongside Jim Walmsley in Arizona. This conversation centers on performance — not hype.Francesco breaks down what he saw firsthand inside Jim's preparation: Norwegian-style double threshold days, lactate testing between reps, treadmill precision at 7,000 feet, and the detailed charts mapping grade-adjusted pace to real-world effort. They unpack how controlled treadmill sessions can sharpen fitness — and where that approach may fall short when it comes to downhill durability and technical trail adaptation. They explore:What double-threshold training actually looks like (5x6min uphill + 10x3min controlled efforts)Why Jim measures lactate mid-workout — and what he's looking forHow to build aerobic power without going “all out”The pros and limitations of treadmill-based performance blocksTranslating controlled lab-style fitness into chaotic desert terrainFrancesco also shares how his own training differs — why he prioritizes eccentric load, downhill strength, and trail specificity — and how he's integrating lessons from Arizona without abandoning his system. The conversation shifts into race execution: sodium strategies, heat adaptation ahead of Western States, passive vs. active heat training, and the discomfort of Black Canyon's rolling, relentless terrain. They discuss how early-season American racing forces athletes to sharpen fitness in January and February — and whether that's sustainable long term.If you're interested in the how behind elite performance — the data, the structure, the experimentation, and the honest doubts — this episode delivers a rare look inside high-level ultra preparation. What you'll learnThe structure of Jim Walmsley's double-threshold blockHow lactate testing shapes workout intensityWhy treadmill precision can accelerate aerobic gainsThe missing pieces when training indoors for trail ultrasHeat and sodium strategies for Western States-style racingHow to evolve your system without overhauling it

Episode 220 of The Adventure Podcast features endurance athlete and author, Peter Wright. Peter has undertaken some of the world's most challenging endurance events - completing the Marathon des Sables, the Jungle Ultra, the Western States 100, the Cape Wrath Ultra and rowing the Atlantic. But what's fascinating about Peter is that on the face of it, he's a pretty normal bloke with a full-time career, who made a series of seemingly ordinary decisions. In this episode, Matt speaks with Peter about how a comfortable, “mildly active” life gradually evolved into a decade of endurance challenges. He shares honest stories of failure, imposter syndrome, DNFs, and the mindset shifts that helped him keep going when quitting felt easier. They discuss balancing adventure with family life and a full-time career, the reality of preparing for a two-year project, and the emotional highs and lows of life at sea. At its core, this episode explores motivation, ageing, and fear of regret. And why adventure isn't necessarily about talent, but about turning up and committing to the long game. For extra insights from the worlds of adventure, exploration and the natural world, you can find The Adventure Podcast+ community on Substack. Send us a textI'm really excited to bring you this episode's guest. When I began ultramarathoning several decades ago, the only way I could learn about races and people in that space was through a black-and-white magazine delivered to my mailbox called Ultrarunning. It had pages and pages of mundane rows of race results that still held fascination for me. Plus stories about races in exotic-sounding places like Auburn, Calif. and where I first heard about this crazy race called the Barkley Marathons that at that time no one had ever finished, and long before Netflix, no one else but me and a few others had heard of. I also read about people who became my first idols in the sport like Marshall Ulrich and Roy Pirrung, who I've had the great honor to chat with both on this podcast and in-person. But one who absolutely left me in awe who I never got to meet was Ann Trason, who I got to see – briefly – when she zoomed past me on Hope Pass in the Leadville Trail 100 in the 90s. Ann won the Western States 100 a mind-boggling 14 times, twice less than two weeks after winning the Comrades Marathon in South Africa. Western States is considered the most prestigious 100-miler in the US, and Ann, who in 1994 set a course record of 17:37:51, now lives close to the 99-mile mark of the course. Comrades is the oldest ultramarathon in the world, having begun right after WW1, and is roughly 55 miles, and is so esteemed that the entire country basically shuts down to watch it. Very few Americans have ever won it. Ann set the Leadville course record of 18:06:24 in 1994 that was only broken this past year by Anne Flower. She finished second, not just among women, but overall. In 1996, she not only completed the Grand Slam of 100-milers – Western States, Leadville, Vermont, and Wasatch Front – but she won them all. Ann set 20 world records, including for 50 miles in 5:40:18 and 100K in 7:00:47. All the way back in 1987, Ann became a Nike-sponsored athlete when women's sports hadn't taken hold like they have today, and ultramarathoning hadn't achieved any of the attention and popularity it now has. Ann retired from ultramarathoning in the 2000s due to injuries and the onset of rheumatoid arthritis, which has ravaged her body. As a result of her many accomplishments, as well as her continuing contributions to the sport as a race director, coach, writer, supporter, and much more, she was inducted into the Ultrarunning Hall of Fame in 2020. After a long time out of the spotlight, Ann arrived at an Arizona race called Across the Years, which begins three days before New Year's and finishes three days after it, just wanting to engage with the ultrarunning community in her joyous way, and push her walker – with all of its lights and decorations – for some laps around the 1.41-mile looped course. I have spoken with several people who told me how delighted they were to get to chat with Ann out there, and in the end, one of the event's highlights was when she completed 100 miles and earned a buckle – all while pushing that walker. With such a long, colorful career, you can imagine that Ann and I cover a lot of ground in this very fun chat, including her talking with Nelson Mandela after she won Comrades, swapping hats with the Jester, the Grateful Dead, being vegetarian and a race director, including the best way to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches at races, long-lost Nike shoe models, the fun of reading that old Ultrarunning magazine, her inspirations in the sport and those who have followed her, her relationship with her parents, and about the joy and gratitude she has for life and the running community.Ann TrasonInstagram @ann_trasonBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram and Threads @stahlor and @we_are_superman_podcastYouTube We Are Superman PodcastSubscribe to the We Are Superman
Photo: Members of the MMIW Search & Hope Alliance attend a cadaver session led by Dr. William Borman, in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) Search teams working on Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) cases must prepare themselves for the likelihood they will come across a body. One group based in Portland, Oreg. is proactively preparing volunteers for that encounter, as Brian Bull of Buffalo's Fire reports. Inside an anatomy lab, William Borman, professor of basic sciences for the University of Western States, carefully turns a cadaver over on a metal table. Metal canopies cover human cadavers inside Linfield University's anatomy lab in Portland, Oreg. Thursday, January 22, 2026. (Photo: Brian Bull / Buffalo's Fire) A tinge of formaldehyde fills the air. Seven volunteers with the group, MMIW Search & Hope Alliance, examine its tendons, nerves, and organs. Kimberly Lining is the group's founder. She says she has seen death up close many times. “And I think through my years of traumatic experiences with violent death, I’ve seen a lot, it’s prepared me. I think just due to fire, like steel is forged through fire.” But for most people, exposure to death and corpses is not a recurring thing, so Lining reached out to Borman to arrange a visit. Not only does it gird people for when they find a body, but it helps them discern between human and animal remains. Two volunteers, Sabrina Griffith and Isabella Regalado, say they would recommend this experience. “Just seeing the veins, the actual ligaments, the bone, the muscles, it was quite surprising to see it and feel it in real life. I've only touched bones and stuff like that, so it’s very interesting to actually feel the inner part of our body.” “It’s actually been better than anticipated. I thought it would be a little bit more gruesome, but everyone has been very professional and understanding, and everyone has been doing their best to educate everyone else.” Lining and Borman remind people that viewing cadavers is not the same as coming across a corpse, whether that is in the wilderness or city. Such bodies are not preserved, and beyond what the cause of death inflicted, would be subject to the elements and scavengers. “If it’s in the wilderness, in the forest, bears, cougars, wolves … they’re gonna tear at stuff and leave the bone. So definitely pieces more than together.” Near the end of the visit, Borman sprayed a blue hydrating liquid to keep the cadavers from drying out and developing mold. He said everyone in Lining's group was respectful and asked great questions. “I’m pleased that we were able to make this happen. If she were interested in doing it again, I'd be open to doing it again.” Lining and her volunteers gave small gifts of gratitude to Borman and thanked him for his time. MMIW Search & Hope Alliance is preparing for two search efforts in the next few weeks. Jon Boutcher, Chief Constable of the Police Service of Northern Ireland, is asked about the arrest of Máire Mhic an Fhailí during a Policing Board meeting in September 2025. (Courtesy Policing Board / Facebook). An Irish language activist has won a landmark decision in Northern Ireland following her arrest during a protest. Seo McPolin has more from Ireland. Seventy-four-year-old grandmother Máire Mhic an Fhailí attended a peaceful protest in support of the Palestinian people last August in Belfast. She was among those arrested under the UK’s controversial Terrorism Laws because of her t-shirt. JJ Ó Dochartaigh from the Irish language band Kneecap wore the same T-shirt as Máire Mhic an Fhailí ahead of the band's 2025 Glastonbury set. (Courtesy Kneecap / X) During the arrest, English-speaking police officers were unable to understand her as she gave them her address – because she spoke in her Indigenous language of Irish. The Police Ombudsman ruled last week that the arresting officer should have taken reasonable steps to arrange a translation service – and that Mhic an Fhailí experienced “oppressive behavior”. The police watchdog also issued a policy recommendation for future engagements with Irish-language speakers. Mhic an Fhailí’s lawyer says this decision “puts a marker down” for how the police service must respect the Irish language moving forward. Get National Native News delivered to your inbox daily. Heart Health Month opens with a powerful, eye-opening conversation on cholesterol, root-cause healing, and whole-person wellness. Dr. Georgia Nabs explore why cholesterol is so misunderstood, the real story behind statins, and how inflammation, blood sugar, liver health, and lifestyle choices all intersect to shape heart health. From functional testing and advanced diagnostics to simple, practical daily shifts, this episode reframes what it truly means to care for your heart. Blending science, compassion, and lived experience, the conversation invites listeners to move beyond fear-based medicine and into empowered, informed, and proactive wellness—where education becomes the foundation for lasting health and vitality. Key Takeaways: True heart health begins by understanding root causes, not just managing symptoms or lab numbers. Cholesterol is more complex than "good" and "bad," and context matters more than fear-based assumptions. Inflammation, blood sugar balance, and liver health play a central role in cardiovascular wellness. Empowered patients ask better questions and become active participants in their healing journey. Sustainable wellness comes from education, consistency, and small daily choices that compound over time. Send us a textMud, rain, and a first-ever DNF set the stage for a comeback story packed with practical wisdom. I sit down with ultrarunner Andy Chaffee to retrace how a soaked 75-mile stop at Indiana Trail 100 became the catalyst for smarter fueling, better decisions, and two confident 100-mile finishes. From childhood races and college running to post-grad burnout and re-entry through Ironman, Andy explains what drew him to ultras: the thrill of uncertain finishes and the constant problem-solving they demand. We unpack the big pivots that made the difference. He traded gel fatigue for high-carb liquid fueling with neutral flavors, then layered in real foods when his stomach felt empty, not just when his legs flagged. He reframed race day as rolling crisis management—system checks, small fixes that pay off two hours later, and permission to throw out the plan near the end. And he tested a 10-minute power nap at mile 91 that left him sharper and looser, powering a strong close. If you've ever wondered whether a short sleep helps or hurts, Andy's answer is clear: done right, it's rocket fuel. The best part might be the people. His wife runs point as lead crew, blocking rash DNFs and insisting on critical calories. Friends who don't consider themselves runners still make perfect pacers with the right brief: distract, cue terrain-based pacing, and protect decisions as focus narrows. We trade Huron 100 stories—headlamp woes, burger cravings, pancake salvation at mile 80—and talk about what's next: pacing at Huron, a spring road marathon to bring back speed, a maybe on Wolverine, and a hopeful ticket in the Western States lottery. If you're chasing your first hundred or trying to shave hours off a stubborn course, this conversation offers concrete tactics and a mindset you can use right away: build a fueling base you can tolerate for 30 hours, plan targeted solids, practice short naps, and recruit a crew that knows when to push and when to protect. Enjoy the ride, then share it with someone on your team. What does it really look like to pursue excellence over a decade — through injury, uncertainty, quiet rebuilds, and breakthrough moments that seem sudden only from the outside? In this episode of Trail Society, host Corrine Malcolm sits down with one of her closest friends and most compelling athletes in the sport: Abby Hall. Fresh off her 2025 Western States 100 victory, Abby reflects on the long road that led there — and why the “messy middle” matters just as much as the podium. This conversation is less about one race and more about a philosophy: making it "cool to care," showing up honestly, and staying in it when things don't go to plan.Together, Corrine and Abby dig into the rhythms of professional running beyond the highlight reels — from late-day training runs and household logistics to mindset shifts, team alignment, and the vulnerability of saying “I want to win.”Whether you're chasing podiums, consistency, or just a deeper connection to why you run, this episode offers a powerful reminder: there's no one right way to do this — but there is value in doing it fully. It's a thoughtful, funny, deeply human conversation about longevity, grit, and what it means to grow alongside a sport that's also growing up.Support our partners:This episode is brought to you by rabbit. Send us a textA young ultra runner with a mountain kid heart and a pro's mindset—Coleman Cragun brings the heat. We dig into how he went from SUU walk-on to stacking top finishes at Canyons, Broken Arrow, Speedgoat, and Mammoth in his first year of ultras, and how mentorship from trail legend Hayden Hawks is shaping every decision. The honesty of their training partnership, from blunt fitness assessments to choosing the hardest race fields, has helped Coleman skip the usual trial-and-error and focus on the skills that actually win races.Black Canyon 100K is the target, and Coleman breaks down the pillars of his prep: specificity on fast desert singletrack, back-to-back long runs, sweat testing to dial sodium and fluids, and the art of not leading when the opening miles go hot. He shares how he'll choose between carbon and non-carbon shoes, why pacing by effort and heart rate matters when Bumble Bee changes the race, and how he structures 5,000-calorie days to stay durable in heavy blocks. The goal is simple and bold: keep the leaders in sight, stay patient, and make a real run at a golden ticket to Western States. We also look ahead to a season that may pivot on one result. If he punches a ticket, Western States becomes the centerpiece—with OCC as the UTMB-week balance. If not, CCC offers a bigger Alpine canvas. Coleman's excited by Sierre-Zinal for speed, by Cedar City's high-low training ecosystem, and by the sport's growing professionalism that could one day let him run full time. He's coaching, refining, and choosing the hard line: race the best, learn fast, and build a name the right way.If you're into trail running, heat management, fueling strategy, Western States lore, or the mentor-mentee dynamic shaping the next generation, you'll love this one. Today we welcome the #1 Trail Runners of the Year, Jim Walmsley and Katie Schide, both Americans who currently reside in France. This is the second time each has won our prestigious award and they've both been featured all four years of TROY's existence. Jim's season was anything but straight forward. He started with a big win at Chianti by UTMB in the spring before an injury prevented him from defending his win at the Western States 100. Luckily, he bounced back in a big way, winning OCC in August and then the Long Trail World Championship in September - the second individual gold medal of his career. On the other hand, Katie is crowned TROY for the second year in a row. She started with a win at Madeira Island Ultra Trail before winning and setting a new course record at the Hardrock 100 in July. Only three weeks later she was second at Sierre-Zinal before winning the Long Trail World Championship in September. To close the year, Caleb posted a dominant victory at Australia's GPT100 -- also winning the World Trail Majors overall. Sara Alonso was arguably the strongest short course athlete on the women's side in 2025, finishing 2nd in the Golden Trail World Series with strong wins at Kobe Trail and Zegama.
