What actually changed with David Roche's YouTube content and why did it work when so many running vlogs and films don't?In this episode of the Singletrack Podcast, I'm joined by running filmmaker and YouTube creator Jeff Pelletier for a deep, behind-the-scenes conversation about how trail running content is evolving and what Roche's Western States series revealed about the platform. We break down why YouTube rewards long-term storytelling over one-off films, how stakes and failure can be more compelling than winning, and why personality-driven channels consistently outperform brand-owned media. Jeff explains why Roche's rollout felt like a masterclass, how it changed expectations for branded content, and what brands, athletes, and creators still get wrong about YouTube. We also discuss:* Why most running brands fail on YouTube* How narrative arcs and episodic structure drive retention* The difference between short-form and long-form impact* Why YouTube is becoming the new television for endurance sports* What the next era of trail running media might look likePartners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Precision Fuel and Hydration - use code SINGLETRACK at checkout for 15% off your next order (https://www.precisionhydration.com/planner/?utm_source=partner&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=singletrack)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website to get 20% off your next order (https://partners.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACKPOD30 at checkout on their website (bit.ly/3JVNIbL) to get 30% off your purchase.Support the show
What if your diagnosis is not a life sentence, but an invitation to rebuild your health, identity, and purpose from the ground up? Josh Trent welcomes Dr. Ryan Lazarus, Functional Medicine Practitioner, to the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 788, to reveal how surviving a near death experience without a pancreas shattered medical labels, reshaped his beliefs about healing, and led him to a holistic blueprint that integrates mindset, food as medicine, trauma stored in DNA, mental fitness, connection, and purpose as the true foundations of lifelong health.
What does it take to return to the top of the ultra running world after major life changes and a "career-ending" surgery? Kaytlyn Gerbin knows. In this episode, Kaytlyn shares her journey from a scientist with a love for the outdoors to a world-class trail and ultra runner. Growing up active but without formal running experience, she discovered her talent in her mid-twenties and quickly fell in love with the 100-mile distance. Since then, she's set course records, tackled some of the most technical alpine trails in the Pacific Northwest, and stood on podiums at legendary races like UTMB, Western States 100, and Transgrancanaria. But Kaytlyn's story isn't just about running. It's about resilience, reinvention, and balance. After the birth of her daughter Era in 2024 and undergoing surgery to correct hip dysplasia—a procedure many thought would end her running career—Kaytlyn came back stronger than ever, winning the Cascade Crest 100 and taking on the epic 330km Tor des Geants race in Italy. In this episode, you'll hear about: How she discovered her running talent and found her passion for ultra distances Overcoming setbacks, starting over, and learning to meet herself where she is The mental strategies that help her tackle 100-mile races and multi-day alpine challenges Balancing motherhood with elite-level running Her plans and goals for 2026, including Hardrock 100 and UTMB Whether you're an aspiring ultra runner, a parent chasing big goals, or someone who loves stories of grit, perseverance, and adventure, Kaytlyn's story will inspire you to push your limits—on the trails and in life. Tune in to hear how Kaytlyn combines mountains, motherhood, and science-backed training to redefine what's possible, one long run at a time. *** New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast drop every Tuesday at 7 AM (UK time)! Vote on the Jeffrey Awards: https://forms.gle/zC29GEAgUJBKNn8T6I brought the cowboy hat out for this one, because Month of Jeff needed full giddy up vibes. Jeff “Bronco Billy” Browning is back, and we go everywhere: Cocodona's weird and wonderful rise into a spectator cult phenomenon, the tiny weather window that makes that race possible, and what it feels like when you are having one of those perfect days in a hundred.Jeff talks about his best races ever (including a scorching San Diego 100 and a 19:33 at Wasatch), and what actually made them click, training blocks, timing, and yes, a little luck. We also get nerdy and practical with an underrated, overrated, properly rated game, covering trail super shoes (carbon on trail, and why the foam matters more), heat training, speedwork for ultra runners (hello zone 3), and why you have to practice race nutrition in training if you want race day to feel automatic. Then we time travel to the early 2000s when ultra gear was basically a fishing vest era, handheld bottles ruled, poles were not a thing, and race nutrition was gels, S-caps, and hope. Jeff shares how mentorship and group long runs shaped the scene back then, and why adventure running and storytelling still matter more than a stat on a results page.We also get into the realities of long efforts and sleep deprivation, including why Jeff would choose self-supported if he goes long again (less complaining, more problem solving). And yes, there are animal stories, including some genuinely terrifying mountain lion encounters, plus the lightning strike moment at Hardrock that led to one of the most ultrarunning reasons ever to change your earrings. To close it out, Jeff breaks down how he made hundreds work while raising a family, with a simple framework: flexible training, non-negotiable family time, and getting creative with when long runs happen. We finish with what is next, some training races, Cocodona, a Western States swing, and the itch to do more adventure style projects.Sponsors: Janji, Garage Grown Gear, CS CoffeeChapters00:00 Introduction and Background05:48 Cocodona 250: Growth and Popularity08:38 Memorable Races and Personal Bests11:51 The Mental and Physical Toll of Long Distances14:44 Self-Supported vs. Supported Racing17:48 The Shift in Running Focus: Adventure vs. Competition20:55 The Importance of Storytelling in Running23:51 Training Insights: Speedwork and Nutrition28:29 Preparing for Race Day: The Importance of Training Camps30:00 Evolution of Gear: Trends from the Early 2000s33:09 Nutrition and Hydration: Lessons from the Past35:46 The Social Aspect of Ultra Running: Mentorship and Community39:43 From Hobby to Career: The Journey of an Ultra Runner42:36 Race Directing: The Challenges and Rewards45:42 Wildlife Encounters: Stories from the Trail55:18 Balancing Family Life and Ultra Running56:10 Balancing Work and Family Life59:00 Creating Quality Family Time01:02:58 Navigating Technology and Family Connections01:03:50 The Story Behind the Earrings01:10:13 Future Plans and Upcoming Races01:18:39 Introduction and Community Connection01:22:40 The Importance of Supportive Relationships01:26:49 Fostering a Positive CommunitySubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Jeff “Bronco Billy” Browning returns to the Run the Riot podcast for a wide-ranging conversation on staying competitive in ultrarunning for decades, not just seasons. From rebuilding after tendonitis to preparing for Cocodona 250 and another run at Western States, Jeff shares practical insight every ultrarunner and ultrarunning coach can learn from. In this episode, we talk about: Training for Cocodona 250 and managing a Western States double What Jeff learned from the Colorado Trail and why tendon and connective tissue damage often shows up months later Taking a rare full month off running and rebuilding intelligently Strength training for ultrarunners: heavy lifting, isometrics, mobility, and durability Ankle taping for technical trail racing and why Jeff tapes for every race Ultra shoe design: ideal drop, rocker, stack height, and stability for long distances Nutrition, recovery, and why Jeff prioritizes protein for longevity Coaching, family life, and balancing training with real-world responsibilities Mental resilience when races don't go as planned and how to move forward as a competitor Show Notes: https://www.theriot.run/jeff-browning2 Whether you're training for your first ultra, chasing a PR, or focused on staying healthy long-term, this episode is packed with real experience from one of the most durable ultrarunners in the sport.

If you're training for a big race and unsure how to structure your training block, this episode gives you a repeatable framework you can use for any A-race, at any distance.I'm using my preparation for the Western States 100 as the real-world example — not to list workouts or weekly mileage, but to show you how to think about training so you can build a plan that actually moves the needle. In this episode, we cover:• How to set goals that force real growth (without selling yourself short)• The 5 pillars of ultra performance and how to identify your biggest limiter• How to decide whether durability, speed, fueling, mindset, or execution deserves priority• Why most runners train hard but still miss their potential• The mistake athletes make when they plan too early — or too late• How to structure training when your race isn't guaranteed yet (lotteries, waitlists, life)• Why aiming bigger almost always leads to better outcomes, even if you miss the goal• How to avoid building a plan that looks good on paper but fails on race day• The difference between “being fit” and being race-ready• How to think in training blocks instead of workouts• How to balance ambition with sustainability so you don't burn out• Why your biggest gains often come from fixing one key weakness — not doing more• How to design a flexible plan that adapts as your life and training load changeThis isn't a “here's my Western States training” episode. It's a blueprint for building smarter training blocks — with Western States as the case study.SHOW LINKS:Register for our race, The Desert Peak Ultra 100K + 50K at desertpeakultra.comWant to work with me to crush your next ultramarathon in our group coaching program? Send us a textWhat happens when a top ultrarunner steps behind the curtain and starts managing athletes, budgets, and contracts—while still chasing Western States dreams? We sat down with Coree Woltring for an unfiltered deep dive into the modern trail ecosystem: how sponsorships really get done, why timing matters, what brands value beyond results, and how the sport can better support its athletes.Coree traces his arc from triathlon hopeful to crewing Leadville, to a breakout North Face contract sparked by a well-timed magazine article. Then the script flips. He explains life on both sides of the table at Merrell—shaping a roster that spans Skyrunner World Series, Western States, and UTMB—while guiding athletes through contract season, social expectations, and the art of the ask. If you're wondering how to pitch a brand, whether to hire an agent, or how to stand out without selling out, Coree's playbook is refreshingly clear: start early, know your value, and communicate like a pro.We also tackle the money question head-on. From Broken Arrow's big prize purse to the financial squeeze on golden ticket chasers, Corey lays out why meaningful prize money and smarter collaboration between races and brands would elevate competition and sustainability. And when injury forced a midyear reset, photography and storytelling filled the gap—leading to paid work with Cirque Series and a new creative lane that complements, rather than replaces, racing. There's plenty of forward look, too: Western States is back on Coree's calendar, with Moab 240 and Cape Town in the mix, plus a sharp take on trail running's Olympic prospects through sub-ultra formats. It's a conversation for athletes, fans, and industry folks who care about performance, credibility, and the future of the sport. If this resonated, subscribe, share with a friend, and leave a review—then tell us what you'd fix first: contracts, prize money, or social expectations?Follow Coree on IG - @coreewolteringFollow James on IG - @jameslauriello Follow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_pod Use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

We had one of the most fun sports-watching weekends of our lives before this great episode! The main science topic was a new study on Kilian Jornet at Western States, breaking down his fueling, the metabolic demand, and lots more. Kilian is also the 2nd author on the paper! We've said it before and we'll say it again: In a world of external monitors, be the rectal thermometer. We also talked about the amazing saga of USA Skimo's Olympic qualification, featuring trail runners Anna Gibson and Cam Smith. This story needs to be a movie! In the meantime, a podcast will have to do.And this episode was full of amazing topics! Diving into the state of trail running in 2025, Francesco Puppi and Max Keith sit down for a wide-ranging, honest, and deeply insightful conversation about where the sport is headed — and what it feels like to live through this moment of rapid transformation. From debates around pacers and fair competition, to the explosion of content, technology, and brand involvement in trail running, they reflect on the challenges, the opportunities, and the responsibility that comes with a sport growing faster than ever. They also open up about the athletes who inspired them this year — from world-class performances at UTMB and Worlds, to breakthrough storytellers on YouTube and Substack — and unpack what makes certain moments and people truly stand out.Francesco shares how his own training has evolved after Worlds, how he's approaching winter with a fresh VO₂max block, and why Western States 2026 is quietly becoming his north star. Max, meanwhile, talks about crewing, pacing, fairness, and how the culture of the sport shapes the choices we make on race day.If you love trail running — not just the racing, but the community, the culture, and the conversations that shape it — this episode will feel like sitting around a table with two friends who live and breathe this world. What you'll learn• Why the debate around pacers is more complex than it seems• How money, livestreaming, and brand involvement are reshaping the sport• The performances that defined 2024–2025 (and why they mattered)• Why content — from YouTube to Substack — is pushing trail running forward• Francesco's return to structured training and his path toward Western States• The trends that will shape the next decade of trail running

Vote for the Jeffrey Awards: https://forms.gle/2JaYdBFdogo2hTXP8During the Month of Jeff I, sit down with a true Jeff of the Year contender, Jeff Mogavero. We cover a wild range of topics, from his fourth place curse at big races to winning Ultra Trail Cape Town, getting married, and somehow deciding Montana Cup might outrank all of it.Follow Jeff Mogavero: https://www.instagram.com/jeffmogavero/Jeff walks through his dirtbag origin story, hitchhiking around the West on almost no money, racing for gas and grocery money, surveying fish and frogs for seasonal biology jobs, and eventually moving to Missoula to see if he could actually make a run at professional trail running. We talk about his Appalachian Trail thru hike, how he ended up with the trail name “Burger King,” his barefoot college phase, and why he once bailed on a “Number One Dad” hat. Then we get nerdy about performance. Jeff explains the science experiment heat chamber protocol he did for Western States, why he thinks heat training is overrated, and why cooling, ice bandanas, and sun protection are underrated superpowers. We dig into Montana Cup, the quiet training culture in Montana, and why adult cross country with a potluck might be the best event in running.Of course, as our official Taylor Swift correspondent, Jeff breaks down the new album, the Taylor Swift treadmill workout, and how he ended up in the top 2 percent of her listeners while also growing 25 to 30 pounds of potatoes and going through 100 pounds of flour. We finish with his dramatic finish line collapses, his case for being Jeff of the Year, and why potatoes, leeks, and Swift might be the real performance trifecta. If you like stories about hitchhiking, dirtbag seasons, science-backed heat preparation, tiny Montana races that mean everything, and a professional runner who is not afraid to be a little dramatic, this episode is for you.Chapters00:00 Introduction to Jeff Mogavero07:30 Racing Highlights and Personal Achievements10:25 Journey to Becoming a Pro Runner13:22 Living the Life of a Runner16:24 Hitchhiking Adventures and Human Connections19:25 Barefoot Jeff and Life Experiences22:12 Heat Training Protocols and Strategies28:20 Cooling Strategies for Racing34:23 Philosophy on Training and Performance41:35 The Importance of Training and Recovery44:24 Taylor Swift: The Soundtrack to Training52:21 The Role of a Good Coach56:22 Trail Names and Their Stories01:01:22 Dramatic Finishes and Personal ReflectionsSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Watch here: christabiegler.com/blueprintThis week our favorite naturopathic oncologist returns and I am so excited! Michael Robinson always brings the nerdy gems and I learn something new every single time. We dive into advanced decision making for cancer and how to think clearly about screening, diagnosis, and treatment long before you are in crisis. We talk about the value of yearly tumor markers and whole body MRI, why tumor mutations matter more than where cancer appears, and how personalized targeted therapies can meaningfully shift outcomes.Michael also shares what he would do if he were diagnosed, how integrative care can reduce chemo side effects and boost effectiveness, and why air, water, and food quality matter more than extreme diets. We also explore the emotional and mental sides of cancer and why mindset, support, and clarity are essential parts of any treatment plan.KEY TAKEAWAYS: • Early screening helps you act before symptoms appear • Tumor genetics, not location, guide treatment • Integrative care improves tolerance and results • Air, water, and whole foods support immunity • Mindset and emotional support influence outcomesCheck out Michael's previous episode here: 307 Integrative Oncology Tumor marker testing: https://www.nourishhealthcare.org/labs-guidesABOUT GUEST:Dr. Robinson is a naturopathic doctor specializing in naturopathic oncology in the Chicago suburbs. From the Isle of Wight, UK – where she now lives, works, and trains Runs her own dog-walking business On a mission to become a full-time professional ultra runner Began running less than 3 years ago, starting with a charity ultra with no running experience Growing Up on the Isle of Wight Childhood on a council estate in a rural village Outdoor play, but no sporting background No sailing or traditional Isle of Wight coastal sports experience School pushed her toward law due to academic ability, despite being naturally creative Initially chased a law career for financial security, not passion Leaving Home & Early Adulthood Moved to London at 19 for university Pivoted from law to Geography degree after a crisis of direction Took a gap year to travel and try to "find her path" Felt lost through early 20s — unsure of what she should be doing with her life How Running Entered Her Life Started running in Feb 2022, almost accidentally Signed up for a 106km Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge with zero running background Motivation: Raise money for the hospice that cared for her Aunt Jane, and raise awareness for bowel cancer First ever long run attempt: a 35km treadmill run to "qualify" for a guided 50km group run From First 50km to Winning 106km – All Within 12 Weeks Completed first 50km guided run with a coach – extremely tough but gave her belief Didn't run again for 6 months afterwards! Hired a coach and trained for 12 weeks for the Isle of Wight 106km race Won the race on her ultra debut — a shock to herself and everyone else Immediately hooked on ultras — discovered a talent for running "abnormally far" Rapid Rise to 100 Miles & First Big Reality Check Next challenge: 100-mile North Downs Way (Centurion) just 6 months into running Won the race — but it was a harsh lesson in mental toughness and fuelling Ran through Storm Anthony — torrential rain, strong winds and brutal conditions Severe stomach issues, under-fuelled, no proper nutrition strategy Learned the importance of fuelling, hydration, and race strategy Becoming a Mountain Ultra Runner Stepped up to technical mountain ultras with Ultra Trail Snowdonia (UTS) Originally entered the 100-mile UTS (one of Europe's toughest races) with no mountain experience Only 50% finish rate – often as few as 8 female finishers Multiple recce weekends in Snowdonia to train – huge learning curve 10 days before UTS she became seriously ill & hospitalised with suspected sepsis Still ran the race, finished near the back — emotionally tough but transformative Returned the following year 13 hours faster, finishing 3rd and becoming the only woman to finish the UTS 100 twice Mindset & Transformation Through Running Running gave her purpose, discipline, and identity Sober for almost 2 years — running helped her leave behind her old lifestyle Mental health, confidence, and self-belief have skyrocketed Found something where hard work = reward — a completely new feeling after years of feeling lost Training, Fueling & Recovery – What's Changed? Then vs now: Early Ultras Now as an Elite Athlete No fuelling strategy Structured carb-based fuelling plan No gels, random aid-station food Precise nutrition to avoid GI issues Minimal recovery Dedicated recovery shakes & sports therapy Little mountain experience Regular training trips to European mountains Works with a sports therapist weekly during heavy blocks Body now adapts well to 100-mile training & recovery Enjoys the solitude, adventure, and freedom of trail running Favourite Races & Future Goals Dream Races: UTMB – Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (secured elite entry for 2026) Western States 100 (USA) Confirmed Upcoming Races: UTMB Mallorca Arc of Attrition (January) Ultra Trail Snowdonia (May) UTMB Chamonix (August) What Charlotte Loves About Ultra Running Adventure, exploration, and seeing the world on foot The community, the challenge, the self-discovery Prefers mountain ultras over flat/road or backyard ultras Loves the beauty, technicality, and grit of long-distance trail running Where to Find Charlotte Instagram: @charlottefisher (shares training, races, and inspiration) Key Takeaways from Charlotte's Story You don't need a background in sport to become an athlete It's never too late to discover what you're meant to do You can start from zero — and still reach elite level with dedication Mountains, miles, and mindset can transform your life Social Media Instagram @charlottefisher

After two years of rehab and earning her spot via a Golden Ticket roll-down, Abby Hall stormed into history at the 2025 Western States 100, running 16:37:16 for the fourth-fastest women's time ever and finishing 11th overall.Hall has since cemented herself as one of the premier athletes in the 100K–100-mile range, highlighted by podium finishes at UTMB's CCC (2nd in 2021, 3rd in 2022), a win at the 2022 Transvulcania 73K, and a debut finish at Western States in 2021.Her résumé includes a 16:37:16 100-mile best and an 8:52:35 trail 100K at Black Canyon — showcasing world-class range when it comes to varying terrain and courses. But her rise did not come without adversity. Early in her ultra career, she scraped under the cutoff at the Leadville 100 in 2017 and 2018. And in June 2023, a training fall resulted in a tibial fracture and major ligament damage, requiring reconstructive knee surgery and a long, uncertain recovery. From scraping cutoff times at Leadville to running one of the fastest Western States in history, Abby Hall's comeback is the ultimate story of resilience and redemption–and you won't want to miss how she did it. We suck collectively at Maths, there is such a thing called a Wet Globe Bulb Temperature (WHAT?!?!?), We are all pro-Kipchoge winning Western States. Back on the Free Outside podcast, I'm catching up with Will Murray after a wild eight months. Since Black Canyon he's gone all-in: new coach (CTS's John Fitzgerald), smarter long runs, and a rock-solid mindset that turned Javelina into a masterclass in steady, no surges. We talk about why he wore a pack while the front pack rocked belts (spoiler: seven bottles a lap and an ice pocket), how he practices mantras on long runs, and the simple crew rule that keeps big races from falling apart: do simple better. Will opens up about the detour through AFib, an ankle injury, a bout of giardia, and how cycling + hiking rebuilt fitness and trust. We also wander into big ideas—Western States, training camps, and what a Grand Tour of trail running could look like. It's process over hype, and it's really, really good.Chapters00:00 Intro & catching up05:30 All-in since Black Canyon08:30 Why get a coach (CTS/John)11:00 Race plan: steady, no surges13:30 Lap themes & mindset15:30 Pack choice & hydration (7 bottles/lap)18:00 Mantras in training20:30 Crew: “Do simple better”23:00 AFib, ankle, giardia detour26:00 Rebuilding with cycling & hiking29:00 Western States lessons32:00 Future goals & balance34:00 Shoes talk (Catamount, super shoes?)36:00 Stage-race / team ideas38:00 Wrap & outroSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

David Roche returns to the Singletrack Podcast fresh off his 12:18, second-place performance at the Javelina Jundred. In addition to the race report, David dives into how high-carb fueling, recovery science, and fearless pacing are rewriting what's possible in trail and ultrarunning, why overtraining and under-fueling are essentially the same thing, how athletes like Will Murray, Canyon Woodward, and Tara Dower are redefining performance ceilings, and what the next five years of the sport might look like.Beyond the science, David opens up about aging in the sport, balancing family life with competition, and rediscovering joy in racing after the pressure of Western States. He shares lessons from his YouTube “Road to Western States” series, what he learned from stepping back, and how he and Megan Roche plan to rebuild their creative work heading into 2026.Partners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Momentous - use code SINGLETRACK for up to 35% off your first order (https://livemomentous.com/) deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website to get 20% off your next order (https://partners.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20)Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACKPOD30 at checkout on their website (bit.ly/3JVNIbL) to get 30% off your purchase.Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Additional Links:Follow David on Instagram, Website, YoutubeFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeSupport the show
In this episode AJW hands the microphone to his son Logan to crack a brew with wife and mother Shelly Jones-Wilkins. In their conversation they discuss their recent experience at the Javelina Jundred, their 10 year run at the Western States 100, and some of the keys to sustaining a long term healthy relationship with ultrarunning as a big part of it. Not surprisingly, Shelly doesn't do social media You can follow Logan on Instagram @ljoneswilkins Your can follow AJW on Instagram @ajoneswilkins
This weekend, we stepped into the fire at the Javelina 100 Mile to chase a golden ticket back to the Western States 100. This episode is the full story of the race, which ended with a golden ticket in 2nd place (behind Will Murray's astounding course record), 27 minutes faster than last year's win.The main discussion is about why the golden ticket presentation ended with a twist. David handed the golden ticket to Canyon Woodward, who finished less than 2 minutes back in 3rd place. Canyon deserves it. Passing it to him was more special than any race. We break it all down while it's all fresh in our sleep-deprived minds. The 2025 Javelina 100 Mile might change ultrarunning forever. The times for men and women obliterated the old records, showing that the same trends we're seeing at shorter races (mostly involving high carb allowing athletes to push hard from mile 1) apply at 100 miles too. This sport ain't seen nothing yet.The new goal is to go for another golden ticket in early 2026. If I'm lucky enough to do it again and have Willy Wonka ask me if I accept, I'll say yes without hesitating...Or at least that's the current plan. If this year has taught us anything, it's that life has a way of laughing at big plans in the most beautiful and life-affirming ways.We love you all! They discuss Tara Dower's massive course-record performance, how all three men's podium finishers — Will Murray, David Roche, and Canyon Woodward — shattered the previous marks, and what it all means for the Western States 100 Golden Ticket Series. They also analyze this year's livestream numbers, highlight their favorite racing moments, and explore how the 2025 edition of Javelina might redefine what's possible on the desert course.Partners:Norda - check out the 005: the lightest, fastest, most stable trail racing shoe ever made (https://nordarun.com/)Gorewear - use code SINGLETRACKPOD30 at checkout on their website (bit.ly/3JVNIbL) to get 30% off your purchase.Naak - use code SINGLETRACK15 at checkout on their website (https://www.naak.com/) to get 15% off your purchase.Raide - Making equipment for efficient human-powered movement in the mountains (https://raideresearch.com/)deltaG Ketones - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website to get 20% off your next order (https://partners.deltagketones.com/SINGLETRACK20)Additional Links:Follow Brett on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, YoutubeSupport the show
