We had a ridiculous amount of fun recording this episode! The main science topic was on a new pre-print study on post-exercise ketones, showing higher carb storage and lower glycemia in athletes taking them. Is it possible that high carb has a special interaction with post-exercise ketones that might be at the heart of recent performances? It's uncertain. We just take them because we like the taste of robot butt.We also had a big breakdown of the cost of high-carb fueling. Megan did calculations on the price per gram of carbohydrates of different fueling sources, from gels to drink to at-home creations. It seems like some companies are giving you amazing deals, and some... are not. We name names. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: heat training, a promo for the Core 2 sensor, David's post-race knee pain and the uncertainty of being an athlete, total energy expenditure during and after ultras, thoughts on the Cocodona 250, Stephanie Case's remarkable performance at Ultra Trail Snowdonia, plus a Q+A on depletion runs and a how-to on uphill treadmill.May your pantry be full of carbs and your secret drawer be full of SECRET hair.We love you all! Buy the Cocodona trading cards Follow Corinne Follow RussUltra Uncovered Cocodona meme In this special "Fire Road" recap episode of Ultra Uncovered, Corinne Shalvoy and Russell Ditsworth dive deep into the 2025 Cocodona 250, a race that continues to redefine the limits of endurance and storytelling in ultrarunning. Corinne shares her experience from behind the mic, covering 20+ hours of live broadcasting throughout the week and reflecting on the race's media growth, evolving commentary team, and powerful moments she witnessed—from joining Dan Green for a few miles at mile 230 of his victorious run to bearing withness in person in heritage square as Rachel Entriken's threw down a historic women's victory. Together, they highlight standout performances and unexpected twists, including brutal weather, muddy terrain, and emotional family finishes like Jenny Chisholm's top-10 run after her sons dropped. The episode also unpacks emerging themes: the strategic use of sleep (or lack thereof), the physical and emotional toll of the course, and the spiritual, almost pilgrimage-like quality the event has taken on for many participants. Russell and Corinne discuss athletes like Shelby Farrell and Dan Green, whose patient, confident pacing led to top finishes, as well as powerful storylines like the youngest finisher Tug Boran, the rise of under-the-radar podium runner Edher Ramirez, and Georgia Porter's fight through illness. Trading cards, celebrity matchups, and dream-start lists round out this heartfelt, humorous, and insightful reflection on a race that's fast becoming the Western States of 200s.00:00Cocodona 250 Overview and Experience10:03Race Dynamics and Surprising Storylines19:57Weather Challenges and Competitive Strategies30:00Key Moments and Race Highlights34:41The Essence of Ultra Running35:01Competitive Strategies in Ultra Running36:10Celebrating Achievements: Dan Green Day37:51Women's Strategies: Shelby Farrell's Journey39:00Injury and Support: Shelby's Comeback40:37Training Regimens: Lindsay Dwyer and Andy Jones Wilkins42:27Life Reflections: The Meaning of Cocodona43:50Interviews and Insights from Cocodona45:07Challenges Faced by Runners46:32Legacy Runners: Celebrating Milestones47:45Future of Cocodona: Team Dynamics48:35Connecting with the Land: A Pilgrimage Mindset49:40Celebrity Picks and Predictions50:46Surprises of the Race: The Rise of New Talent52:34Final Thoughts and Future Aspirations

Endurance sports are in the midst of a revolution that will change everything about what we think humans can do. This week at the Quad Rock 50 Mile, we felt it firsthand.David set a 14-minute course record at this classic, steep Colorado race. We break it all down, "no secrets" style. Topics: high-carb fueling, big hydration totals, why heat training might be the next frontier, pre-race meals and supplements, ice bandanas, gut training, downhill running, uphill treadmill, and lots more.No matter what distance you go or speed you run/bike/hike, there's a path within these approaches that will make everything easier, healthier, and more fun. It's one thing to talk about it... it's another thing to FEEL IT. We try to bring you within those feelings, laying it all out there so that you can use the playbook.Thank you so much for being here for the whole journey. If you told us when we started this podcast 5 years ago that we'd be 7 weeks before the Western States 100 with this level of hope, we'd have said you're dreaming. Listeners have made it all possible. You have showed us that love is waiting on the other end of both success and failure. It's one thing to say that results don't matter and that love is waiting either way. It's another to FEEL IT. Thank you and we love you.7 weeks until the Western States 100 Mile moonshot. The ultra running world is evolving rapidly. At major races like Western States, Cocodona, and Moab, we're witnessing the rise of elaborate crew villages, multiple pacers working in shifts, and support systems that rival military operations. This transformation prompts a critical question: are we creating two distinct versions of our beloved sport? As someone who typically races without crew support, I've always found the magic of ultra running in those raw moments of solitude – when it's just me, my mind, and the trail having a conversation that can't be interrupted. There's something profoundly transformative about facing a 100+ mile journey alone, solving problems on the fly, and discovering who you become when everything falls apart at mile 70, 100, or beyond. That struggle between breaking down and finding a way forward has always been the heart of what makes this sport special to me.Yet I recognize the immense value crews and pacers bring. They can be literal lifesavers in dangerous conditions, catching signs of deterioration a depleted runner might miss. There's undeniable power in sharing these epic journeys with others, creating bonds through shared suffering and triumph. For those chasing specific time goals or competitive placements, a well-coordinated crew becomes an essential part of the performance equation. Different approaches serve different purposes, and there's no single "right way" to experience ultra running. What matters most is finding meaning in your miles, whatever that looks like for you. Whether you're drawn to the solitary challenge of self-reliance or the shared adventure with supporters, the essential question remains: what transformation are you seeking on the trail? I'd love to hear your experiences with crews, pacers, or solo adventures. Have you found that sweet spot between support and self-discovery? Subscribe now and join our growing community of non-elite runners who choose to endure, wherever and however you find yourself on this amazing ultra journey.Support the showChoose to Endure:Email:info@choosetoendure.comWebsite:https://www.choosetoendure.com/YouTube:https://www.youtube.com/@ChoosetoEndureInstagram:https://instagram.com/choose_to_endure?utm_source=qr Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61552757049526

In this milestone 99th episode of Trail Society, we go all-in on Keely Henninger's third-place finish at the Canyons 100K, earning her a coveted Golden Ticket to Western States. Keely walks us through her decision to return to Western States, how she managed training on reduced mileage while in med school, and the strategies she used to stay consistent under immense pressure. We dig into the physiology, planning, and mindset shifts that made this comeback possible—including how stepping away from sponsorship has reshaped her relationship with competition. Listeners will get detailed answers to real questions from the trail community: what does tapering for a 100K really look like? How do you fuel during a freezing wet race? Can long hours on your feet at work substitute for running volume? Keely shares what went right, what she learned from what didn't, and how she's preparing to level up for Western States. Plus, we cover gear (including the story behind those glasses), race-week nutrition tweaks, and how elite women are balancing ambition with authenticity in sport. If you're navigating time constraints, training stress, or racing with less-than-ideal prep—this conversation offers both practical takeaways and serious inspiration. We put on our space cowboy outfits for this great episode! The main topic centered on the almost-ubiquitous use of higher carb intakes in recent races, from the Canyons 100k to the Boston Marathon to the cycling classics. What once seemed optional is now mandatory. Where do the next breakthroughs come from? We outline some ideas to try to catch the waves before they become obvious. There was also some fascinating science on warm-weather and metabolic processes, showing reduced carb oxidation rates in heat. That could have big implications for how fueling and GI training changes with harder efforts. And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics: Megan's heat suit debut, our current thinking on heat suit guidelines, David's 50k race, what he is learning approaching Western States, fluid intake, a study on intense PM exercise and sleep, the wild Canyons 100k, Kilian's fascinating training approach for Western States, a follow-up on the shoes dominating the road scene, the Breaking 4 Project, and putting power in your stride, plus a Q+A on steep vert, Jess McClain's Boston Marathon training, and fueling from gas stations! You are all heat champions to us. May you be blessed with the stickiest treadmills. We love you all! Send us a textFor Devin Pancake, trail running represents much more than a post-collegiate athletic pursuit—it's a thoughtful 30-year journey he's just beginning. Fresh off his win at the Antelope Island Buffalo Run 25K and his selection for the 2025 Trail Team Elite, Devin brings refreshing perspective to a sport that often celebrates immediate success. The conversation traces Devin's path from running a 4:00 mile at Utah State University to discovering trail running through iconic films like "Where Dreams Go to Die" and "Found on 49." Unlike many collegiate runners who turn to trails after burnout, Devin maintained a healthy relationship with running throughout college, crediting his coach for emphasizing sustainable development over grinding for immediate results.Devin shares the surreal experience of racing alongside Western States champion Adam Peterman in his first ultramarathon, chatting with the elite runner for miles while pushing his own limits. This story perfectly captures his approach to trail running—competitive but joyful, serious about performance but equally focused on connection and experience. His willingness to return to Speed Goat 50K after a self-described "humbling" first attempt demonstrates his commitment to learning and growth. What makes Devin's perspective particularly valuable is his balanced enthusiasm for everything from fast 25Ks to potential 100-milers and FKT attempts. Supported by the Trail Team Elite and coached by long-trail master Joe McConaughey through the All-In Collective, he's developing the skills to pursue both competitive excellence and soul-enriching adventures. His inspiration comes from thoughtful pioneers like Courtney Dauwalter and Jared Campbell, reflecting his own view of running as "a form of long-life meditation."Follow Devin's journey on Instagram @devinpancake as he tackles upcoming challenges including the Desert Rats 21K, Speed Goat 50K, and potentially Sunapee Scramble Mountain Classic while preparing for his Uinta Highline Trail FKT attempt. His story reminds us that the most fulfilling path in trail running might be one that balances serious competition with genuine appreciation for the mountains and community.

Send us a textShay Aquilano's remarkable transformation from college soccer player to elite ultrarunner showcases what's possible when passion meets purpose in the mountains. Having recently captured the Gorge Waterfalls 100K championship and secured a coveted Western States lottery spot, Shay joins the Steep Stuff Podcast to walk us through her unique journey into the ultrarunning world.Unlike many elite trail runners, Shay didn't come from a competitive running background. She discovered running during COVID lockdowns while studying neuroscience at Notre Dame, initially hitting trails with her parents at local parks in Indiana. What began as a pandemic coping mechanism evolved into a profound connection with ultrarunning, which she beautifully describes as "life distilled" - a raw experience where you encounter all the highs, lows, doubt, and joy played out over miles of trail. The conversation takes us through Shay's pivotal decision to relocate from flat Indiana to mountainous Boulder - a move she calls her "best decision of 2023." Now training alongside fellow elites while maintaining her unique approach, Shay has been selected as one of two ultra specialists on the prestigious Trail Team Elite. This recognition provides crucial infrastructure and mentorship that was missing during her early development in the Midwest.Shay shares fascinating insights into her training philosophy, nutrition strategy (working with dietician Kylie Van Horn), and mental approach to ultrarunning. Rather than fixating on heart rate zones or rigid fueling protocols, she prioritizes perceived exertion and has found her personal sweet spot around 60-70 grams of carbohydrates per hour during races. Her pre-race music choice? "Stacy's Mom," because as she puts it, "you can't have the ultra sads" while listening to that song. What stands out most is Shay's refreshingly grounded perspective despite her rapid rise in the sport. While discussing her upcoming Western States 100 debut, she emphasizes longevity over immediate results: "I want to be a long-term athlete and a sustainable runner... I want to still be doing this when I'm 80 years old." Join us for this inspiring conversation with one of ultrarunning's brightest rising stars, and discover why the ultra trail community is, in her words, "humanity at its greatest."This episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction use code steepstuffpod for 25% off your next order on UltimateDirection.com Follow Shea on IG - @shea_aqFollow James o IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_pod

In this episode, Einat discusses her topic of expertise: the Palestinian "right of return," which, as we have covered many times, is not a "right" enshrined anywhere in international law, nor would it be, for many people, a return. What do Western states not understand about this concept? Plus: a new addition to The War of Return, post-October 7th, and a conversation with Blake Flayton on the failings of Prime Minister Netanyahu and proposals for Gaza's future.
Send us a textIn this enlightening conversation with ultrarunner Jazmine Lowther, we explore the dynamic intersection of elite performance, career transitions, and authentic living in the mountain sports world. Jazmine takes us inside her recent move from The North Face to Arc'teryx, revealing the emotional complexity of brand identity for professional athletes and the forward-thinking athlete support systems being developed in the industry.Training in Squamish British Columbia brings unique challenges—freezing rain, challenging terrain, and a community where extraordinary multisport days are the norm. Jazmine shares how this environment shapes her approach to training while preparing for races like Canyons 100K, where she'll return as a former champion. The candid discussion about mental fortitude required for Pacific Northwest winters offers valuable perspective for anyone training through challenging conditions. The conversation takes fascinating turns through coaching philosophy, where Jazmine emphasizes human connection over training metrics. "Communication is the foundation for the coach-athlete relationship," she explains, detailing how understanding an athlete's life stressors, relationship challenges, and mental health is crucial to effective coaching. Her approach to running retreats and holistic athlete development reveals a thoughtfulness that extends far beyond physical performance. We tackle complex industry questions about race consolidation, the UTMB ecosystem, and finding balance between professional opportunities and grassroots racing culture. Jazmine's balanced perspective acknowledges both the visibility major race series bring while valuing the community events that build the sport's foundation. Her personal dilemma between targeting Western States or UTMB highlights the scheduling challenges elite athletes face in today's crowded calendar.Perhaps most compelling is Jazmine's reflection on authenticity in the trail running community, where she values genuine connections over curated perfectionism. For anyone navigating the intersection of passion, profession, and purpose in outdoor sports, this conversation offers invaluable insights from someone balancing competitive excellence with genuine human connection.Follow Jazmine on IG - @jazmine_lowtherFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow The Steep Stuff on IG - @steepstuff_podThis episode is brought to you by Ultimate Direction - use code steepstuffpod for 25% of your cart at checkout

We put on our finest white spandex for this amazing episode! The main topic was a new review study on protein needs for endurance athletes. The authors used a cool method of isotope labeling to argue that endurance athletes need more protein than traditional recommendations. The nutrition revolution is not just about carbs! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: the announcement of an Unbreakable 2 documentary heading into Western States, Kilian Jornet's sustained dominance since the first Unbreakable was filmed, the 1-year anniversary of the bike crash, Tailwind High-Carb, our questions about protein recommendations, increased power and weight in professional cycling, torpedo bats dominating the conversation in baseball, mile times of the Houston basketball team, VO2 max estimates from your watch across different sports, nutrition on race week, the "yips" in running, balancing intensity with cross training, maintaining confidence when changing jobs, overdressed walking for heat training, and balancing training with studying for the bar exam.Thank you so much for being here in the year since the accident. Showing up each week has been a backbone of our lives, and we appreciate you so much. We took off our armor for this incredible episode! The main discussion might have been one of our most important (and fun) ever: the Big Alta 50k DNF, failure, and what it truly means to go for it. David raced Big Alta because it was somewhere that he couldn't hide. We needed to gather data about what happened at the very edge of human capabilities. And when you F around...sometimes you find out. We hope that you feel a connection to your big scary dreams. Thank you for giving us the courage to dream bigger! And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: racing lessons from Big Alta, why ankles are annoying, guys v. dudes, running your own race, Jim Walmsley dominates at Chianti, Kilian is going to Western States, sauna v. hot tub, going from 0 to 1 to 2 kids, running groups, bike v. treadmill, core work, life "balance" for people with big goals, long-term training builds, and lots more. This episode gives you a raw window into the true story that athletes rarely tell. We all fail. Life really unfolds in what happens next. We love you all!
