Prior to Mondelez, Tara was at Kraft Food Group as the Design Strategy Leader and before that, she worked for Mars as the Brand Manager, Candy and In-Store Marketing Manager for Snackfoods.SHOW INTRO:Welcome to the NXTLVL Experience Design podcast.EPISODE 72… and my conversation with Tara Haase Hieminga. On the podacast our dynamic dialogues based on our acronym DATA - design, architecture, technology, and the arts crosses over disciplines but maintains a common thread of people who are passionate about the world we live in and human's influence on it, the ways we craft the built environment to maximize human experience, increasing our understanding of human behavior and searching for the New Possible. The NXTLVL Experience Design podcast is presented by VMSD Magazine part of the Smartwork Media family of brands.VMSD brings us, in the brand experience world, the International Retail Design Conference. The IRDC is one of the best retail design conferences that there is bringing together the world of retailers, brands and experience place makers every year for two days of engaging conversations and pushing the discourse forward on what makes retailing relevant. You will find the archive of the NXTLVL Experience Design podcast on VMSD.com.Thanks also goes to Shop Association the only global retail trade association dedicated to elevating the in-store experience. SHOP Association represents companies and affiliates from 25 countries and brings value to their members through research, networking, education, events and awards. Check then out on SHOPAssociation.orgTara Haase Hiemanga who is the Global Lead for Elevated Shopper Experiences at Mondelez. She is using an understanding of neuroscience to enhance customer experiences across a number of the Mondelez brands. What brands are those, well there is a pretty big list but let me just say a few of my favorites – OREO, Toblerone, Cadbury, Wheat Thins and I could go on…We'll get to all of that in a moment but first though, a few thoughts… * * *Back around 2008, 9 and 10 my wife was studying interpersonal neurobiology with Dr. Dan Siegel. I used to come downstairs and listen to her and all the videos she was watching and various conversations she was having and I was often saying ‘wow that really replies to the work that I'm doing in trying to create retail stores.'As I listened it became clearer and clearer to me that I could perhaps rely on the lessons of understanding neuroscience as being the core driver to customer experience rather than simply thinking of it in terms of psychology, demographics and culture. What fascinated me then and still continues today is the idea that – there was something beyond simple psychology that we would be able to use to design better stores something that would relate to almost all humans in terms of how they understood environments specifically how they would look through product assortments, identify key item presentations, understand graphics, and how color, pattern and texture would all come together to either hinder or help decision making in the shopping aisle.Interestingly, back in the day, it took me a little while to get into architecture. I'd had a great time in junior college but my grades weren't great so I ended up enrolling in a Bachelor of Science in psychology which I was fascinated in anyway because I wanted to understand human dynamics but, I also had a sense that there was something deeply rooted and not just how buildings looked from the design point of view and but how they made people feel from an embodied / sensory point of view. And so, when I finally got into architecture a lot of my thinking about design was about how these places that we were creating would have qualities about them that would make people feel a certain way.I sometimes used to say that I didn't care whether you loved it or hated it (of course I hoped you loved it) but I wanted to make sure that you felt something as you were experiencing some place. And that later in my retail design career that you were satisfied with the experiences as well as the things that you bought in the store. In 2012 I did a presentation at global shop that was ostensibly about emotions and how we had to begin to understand that creating stores was about building emotional relationships and long term connections and then the awareness of how empathy played into this equation. This single presentation was a turning point in my career because someone came up to me at the end of it and said “…that idea should be a book.”And so, taking that as a sign…I was on my way to immersing myself for the next couple of years in writing “Retail (r)Evolution: why creating right brain stores will shape the future of shopping in the digitally driven world. “In the book I really dug into the nature of shopping as a cultural phenomena; it's power across the ages to tie together ideas and commerce the growth of shopping places around the world from the intersections of silk trade routes to the mega malls of North America and I also dug into brain science. In fact over a third of the book deals with understanding functional areas of the brain and how if we we're able to appreciate more how our gift in perception through our body was directly tied to our emotional connections and long term memory could be used - that all shoppers and retailers would be better off.I tried to explain it this way: imagine you're in your car - what I'd like you to do is write down 5 things that make the engine of your car run now if you're actually in your car while listening to this, do not start to write down these five things but hold them in your head as an idea what are the five things that make your car engine run? OK got 5 of them? Now, I want you to think about your brain and think of five things that make you run - through your engine - in other words your brain. The strange thing is and I've done this at multiple presentations around the world people are more apt to be able to describe 5 things that make the engine of their car run where they might spend 2 hours a day in rather than being able to identify more than two things that make themselves run ( the functional areas of their brain) that they spend 24hrs a day in.I also put forward the following proposition:- if we understood that all of our behaviors, thoughts and feelings are run by our brain-body connection, how is it possible that we could be designing stores and not have any clue about the very thing that is so influential in making decisions in the shopping aisle and our willingness to maintain relationships with the brands we love? So, it became a little bit of a career mission to bring the understanding of neuroscience to the retail design masses hoping that they would understand the power of the brain-body and design and creating effective selling spaces. Now, the other influence here was the emergence of digital technologies and how that was fundamentally changing the way our brains were being wired. With the idea that the more you use a functional area of your brain the more you maintain its wiring between neurons and the less used something is the more though the brain goes on a wonderful topiary garden creating extravaganza trimming away neural pathways that are not being used. This whole subject is referred to as “synaptic pruning” and fits together neatly with an idea around “neuroplasticity” - how your brain changes over time in relation to the things that you're exposed to in the patterns of behavior you engage in.So my premise then was: - if you are increasingly not using certain areas of your brain related to the exercise of empathy in face to face embodied interactions with other people like we continually do by communicating through our digital devices, what does that mean for the pathways for empathy in our brains and how we communicate with others? If stores were about empathic engagement, we might have a significant challenge ahead of us. In other words, if we are communicating less and less in embodied, face-to-face ways, what happens to the neural pathways built for empathic connection if we are using them less? Does synaptic pruning play a role here eventually diminishing our ability to engage in empathic extension? This became particularly interesting when you began to look at an entire cohort of emerging customers whose lives were very much directed by their interaction through social media that works and the digital devices they held in their hands. That is the subject of a bigger and equally interesting conversation which I'll save for another podcast but for now let's continue to focus on trying to understand what actually motivates people in the shopping aisle there have been fantastic studies that I came across the work of Baba Shiv and how decision making was made in the shopping aisle in relation to the potential for customers cognitive overload how they decided to choose one thing or another or the work of Sheena Iyengar who did a famous study of jams and the idea that a huge selection did not infact increase more purchases and satisfaction in the products chosen. There are now a heft of studies that are available that continue to reinforce the fact that people's behavior in the shopping aisle is not fully conscious. Much of it happens below the conscious awareness radar. We are driven by our emotions and our collective history of hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution that gear our brains, regardless of culture, religious or sexual orientation political affiliation or where you live in the world, that we all to some degree are reacting from the same baseline of brain activity in the brain's functional areas that we all have.Over the past 10 years there have been a number of organizations that have emerged focusing on the relationship between neuroscience and the built environment. The ANFA - the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture would be one of them.Another would be the Neuromarketing Science and Business Association whose conferences around the world bring together neuroscientists, designers, architects, retailers and brands to talk about the influence that neuroscience could play in creating more effective shopping places. So, I am a huge advocate for trying to understand how we work and the neural mechanisms that influence our behavior beyond our psychology. The whole idea here is that if we knew a little bit more about how your brain worked, you might likely not do some of the things you do as an architect or designer creating retail or brand experience places thinking it matters when in fact it's completely off of the awareness radar and probably has little influence on how people react while in stores. And so we come now to my interview with Tara Haase Hiemanga who is the Global Lead for Elevated Shopper Experiences at Mondelez. So… when I say Mondelez you may not know the parent brand but I'm quite sure that you know some, if not all, of these brands and products that might be in your diet every single week. The Mondelez brands include: Cadbury chocolate and Dairy Milk, Chips Ahoy cookies, Clorets, Halls, the famous Oreo cookie, Philadelphia cream cheese, Ritz crackers, Tang apparently the drink that the astronauts used to have back in the day, Wheat Thins and Toblerone.Do you know some of those brands? Yeah I thought you probably did. Last spring I was attending the SHOP Marketplace event and onto the stage comes Tara Haase Hieminga and a consultant from the company Sellcheck. They proceeded to talk about how they were using neuroscience to enhance shopper experiences across their assortment of products. Now if you've ever walked down the snack aisle at your local grocery store, I am quite sure that you are familiar with the sea of merchandise that exists there.Hundreds of brands all selling within the same category and the question is how does a brand stand out or how do you as a consumer, if you don't already know your brand that you want to buy, decide to buy anything? If you follow the neuroscience, it can be quite a challenge for the brain to unpack most of what's in that shopping aisle. On the other hand, if you consider neuroscience you can begin to understand how people make decisions about what they want to buy and be able to do things in terms of your packaging, your product positioning, shelf graphics, the language you use on your packaging to enhance the likelihood that customers will give you deeper consideration and maybe buy more than they anticipated. And that's exactly what Tara, Sellcheck and Mondelez is doing across their portfolio brands. They have begun to see the incredible impact of implementing neuroscience principles to the design of their packaging, point of purchase presentations and shelf displays so that the customers that they have, or ones they hope to acquire, will be attracted to their product, understand the messaging and end up with more than one bag of snacks in their shopping cart.I wish that Tara and I would have had hours to discuss the intricacies of neuroscience and shopping behavior and how it relates to the design of products and in store presentations. This is a subject that I believe all of us should have intimate knowledge.Since I have never met a retailer who wanted to have a bad experience for their customers, I would suggest that implementing a deep understanding of our innate neurobiological hardware is critical. * * *ABOUT DAVID KEPRON:LinkedIn Profile: linkedin.com/in/david-kepron-9a1582bWebsites: https://www.davidkepron.com (personal website)vmsd.com/taxonomy/term/8645 (Blog)Email: david.kepron@NXTLVLexperiencedesign.comTwitter: DavidKepronPersonal Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/davidkepron/NXTLVL Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nxtlvl_experience_design/Bio:David Kepron is a multifaceted creative professional with a deep curiosity to understand ‘why', ‘what's now' and ‘what's next'. In this episode of Don't Eat Poop!, food safety industry veterans Matt and Francine are taking you through a list of 29 common foods that are approved in the United States, but banned in other countries.Prepare yourself to be surprised by the bad foods and thoroughly entertained by our hosts and the stories of how they consume these products in their daily lives. In this episode:
Consider this: Skittles, Pop-Tarts, Gatorade, Little Debbie's, Coffee-mate, Ritz Crackers, Pillsbury biscuits, Wheat Thins and Frosted Flakes are common staples in the US kitchen, but due to their food colorings, BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene), and hydrogenated soybean and cottonseed oils they are actually banned in numerous countries, from Iceland and Austria to Hungary, Japan, and much of the European Union. The US FDA has recently decided to ban BVO (brominated vegetable oil), found in Mountain Dew and Powerade among other products, but this is a result of public outrage rather than objective science. Why do so many countries have the same conclusion about this junk but the US can't figure it out? Many of these products, if they are sold in thee above countries, have completely different ingredients. So even if someone were a huge fan of Frosted Flakes can they explain why the product only needs BHT in the United States? -FREE ARCHIVE & RSS: https://www.spreaker.com/show/the-secret-teachings Twitter: https://twitter.com/TST___Radio Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thesecretteachings WEBSITE (BOOKS, RESUBSCRIBE for early show access): http://thesecretteachings.info Paypal: rdgable@yahoo.com CashApp: $rdgable EMAIL: rdgable@yahoo.com / TSTRadio@protonmail.com

NICK'S BIO Between growing up in a northern England rural town to leading global insights and analytics for one of the most successful consumer products companies in the world – a lot happens. This is the case for Nick Graham, a remarkable student of human behavior, societal trends and consumer taste. Nick studied History & French at Oxford University which somehow led him to start a career in the world of marketing, first as an advertising planner at GCI Media then InterPublic Group, pivoting later to brand & innovation strategy at Clear, the M&C Saatchi's strategy division. That foundation led him to spend almost 10 years at PepsiCo where he led insights and analytics for the company's global beverages business followed by running insights & analytics for the US business unit of the consumer products giant. He oversaw the reinvention and redesign of the Pepsi brand as well as the company's strategic shift to new categories like sparkling water (Bubly with $100 million in 1st year sales), energy drinks (Rockstar), protein/sports drinks (Muscle Milk), coffee & tea (Starbucks partnership). He is currently Senior Vice President and Global Head of Insights & Analytics at Mondelez International (“Snacking Made Right”). The company's brands include Oreos, Chips Ahoy, Clif Bar, Wheat Thins, Cadbury, Milka and Ritz Crackers. His focus, a big one: transforming the function, integrating data science, AI and behavioral economics to help the business understand the shifts the company needs to make to meet future consumer demand. We talk about marketing, brands, human behavior, innovation, artificial intelligence and the fact that humans innately try to achieve balance in life - including the spectrum of what we consume to nourish ourselves. There is a place for kale salads and probiotics as well as the indulgence and satisfaction that comes with opening an Oreo cookie, licking the frosty cream and chomping on the chocolaty cookie goodness - a source of much debate around the world. Mama,I hate talking about willpower. It's one of those words that instantly turns people off because they feel like they don't have it. “I don't have the willpower to stick to a diet! I love cookies too much,” or “I don't have the willpower to wake up before my kids,” or “I don't have the willpower to get to the gym every day, it's just too tough.” However, I know I need to talk to you about willpower because it's so misunderstood! From my experience as a young mom, and talking to hundreds of moms, I've learned one of the biggest problems mamas face with our health is mindless snacking.Whether that's grabbing an Oreo from the sleeve every time you pass through the kitchen, eating bites of leftover mac and cheese when you're clearing your kids' plates, or mindlessly eating a whole bag of chips at the end of the night, snacking is hurting your health. And I bet you've tried everything under the sun to stop snacking. You did a kitchen clean out and threw out all the “bad” foods. You tried to get the kids to trash their food before bringing their plates to the sink. (This one never works, but it's a valiant effort! Bahaha!)You stopped buying chips, cookies and ice cream. You punished yourself when you ate snacks. But none of it worked. And you probably thought, I just don't have the willpower to do it. And you were right! You didn't have the willpower.Because willpower is a belief. The secret to having willpower is believing that you're capable of it!You have to start believing that you have willpowerI talk about thoughts and feelings a lot, and for a really good reason: everything, literally everything starts with a thought.Quick caveat, I'm about to talk a lot about chips and how to avoid mindless snacking on them, but that doesn't mean that chips are bad. They're not good either. They're neutral. They're food. So you can eat them, or you don't have to. This is just an example! We'll go into this later but food accountability is more important than good vs. bad foods!Ok, back to our example. Before you put a single chip in your mouth, you have to have several thoughts.Thought 1: “Ooo, chips!”Thought 2: “That sounds good!”Thought 3: “Should I get a bowl or eat straight from the bag?”Thought 4: “Nah, I'll just grab a handful.”Thought 5: “Oops! Better pick that chip off the floor before the baby gets it.”Small, simple thoughts lead to bigger actions and results than we realize. “Ooo chips!” was a small, insignificant thought. But it can lead to eating a whole bag of chips, the result of which is gaining weight! If you want to have more willpower, then you have to start paying attention to how your small thoughts are causing unwanted results. Then you need to flip that and use your small thoughts to create the results you want!If you want to increase your willpower, start filling your brain with thoughts that result in more willpower! Now, Mama, I'm not going to leave you alone to create new thoughts on your own because that's harder than it sounds! It takes practice to start controlling your thoughts. But I want to help you get started. Here are a few new thoughts or affirmations that you can use to increase your willpower around snacking.I'm strong enough to eat the foods that will help me reach my goals. That sounds good, but it's not in alignment with my goals.I'll have that later if I'm still craving it.I'm in charge here, and I'd rather have something that fills me up.I've already made a plan, and this food isn't in it. I'll have it tomorrow instead.Chips are great, but they're not what I need right now.I'm listening to my body and while chips sound good, I know that it's craving something more substantial. The key to using these affirmations is picking something that sounds true right now, and building on it.Right now, “I'm strong enough to eat the foods that will help me reach my goals.” might not feel true to you. You might feel really weak around snack foods. So try, “I'll have that later if I'm still craving it.” instead. As you get used to thinking, I don't need that snack food/craving food right now, you'll grow into some of the stronger affirmations. Taking this bit by bit is how you're going to create the willpower to stop mindlessly snacking! How will we do that?Set boundaries around snacking to increase your willpowerNow that we've covered the mental part of willpower, I want you to start creating physical boundaries so that you can implement your willpower!I want to start with food accountability. When we first started talking today, I mentioned how you may have done a kitchen clean out, stopped buying snacks or treats, you get it. Those things didn't work for you because you thought you needed to restrict your access to snacks. But you don't.Weight loss and general health aren't about restriction, it's about moderation. Being able to enjoy things like chips, cookies, ice cream, whatever you love without having to eat it all. When I started macro tracking with my own macro coach, she told me to include a treat in my day. And it stunned me.I thought I was supposed to sacrifice everything to lose weight. I thought losing weight should be difficult and as close to miserable as you could get.I thought I needed to eat salads, boiled chicken and broccoli for every meal. When my coach told me to eat a bagel or have an ice cream sandwich (my favorite treat at the time) it didn't sound right. But the truth is that all those restrictive diets I'd done for YEARS hadn't gotten me any close to my goals. So I was willing to try something new and I had the ice cream sandwich. But, and this is key, I made it work within my nutritional boundaries.I didn't eat 5 ice cream sandwiches. I didn't avoid them until it drove me so crazy that I had to binge eat them. I just planned for it.And because it was a part of my nutritional plan I was able to enjoy my treat without feeling bad about it AND I lost weight.Food accountability is about owning up to your choices and making them fit into your boundaries instead of ignoring the fact that you ate something “bad.”And I say “bad” with quotation marks because food isn't good or bad! Food doesn't make choices, it's just food. It's neutral.Yes, some food is more nutritious than others but that doesn't make it bad. All food has its place in our diets. Sometimes food is just fun and tastes good and that's ok!As long as you're accountable for it you can have it! And I've seen time and time again that the women who hold themselves accountable for their food choices have so much more success than the women who try to ignore or hide it.So how do you know what your boundaries are? That's the part no one ever teaches you, right?Everyone says “eat in moderation” but what the heck does that mean? The hard thing is it's different for everyone. You have to learn how much food makes you lose weight, gain weight and maintain weight. And then you can make choices that fit into those boundaries.I can't tell you right now exactly how much you should be eating because there are so many factors that play into that. (Height, weight, exercise levels, age, gender, dieting history, Mindset, old habits thoughts and patterns etc.) But you can learn more about your nutrition needs inside my program, Macros Made Easy, or if you prefer a DIY method, check out my ebook!Learning about your nutritional needs is one of the most beneficial things you can do for your health! Especially if you've been dieting for years and you're still struggling to reach your goals! The coolest part about learning what your nutritional boundaries are is being able to enjoy foods you've deemed bad or off-limits!I had a client who loved Wheat Thins crackers, but along her health journey she decided she couldn't eat them because they were “bad.” But after being in my program she learned that Wheat Thins weren't bad, she just didn't understand how many to eat or how to fit them into her diet. Now they're always stocked in her pantry and she can eat a few as part of her lunch without feeling bad about it! She's able to reach her goals and eat the food she loves. If you are tired of restricting your favorite snacks but still want to lose weight, let's chat! Baconsale, the podcast that smiles back, has ranked chips before, but on this episode we've brought a laundry basket full of 21 different types of crackers so we can tier each one. We'll first briefly discuss the history of these crispy snacks, and then we'll share our feelings about Ritz, Cheese-It, Goldfish, Chicken in a Biskit, Saltines, Triscuit, Wheat Thins, Graham crackers, pretzels, and more. And we hope you play along as we take a crunchy bite into such topics as flavor and mouthfeel, so you can determine if you're a cracker matcher, a biscuit buddy, or a cracker slacker. Press play to get that buttery, flaky feeling.

Mondelēz International celebrated the 50th anniversary of its Richmond Biscuit Manufacturing Plant Oct. 14. The plant on Laburnum Avenue in Eastern Henrico, produces such snack favorites as Oreo, Chips Ahoy! and Nilla Wafers cookies and Ritz and Wheat Thins crackers. Family members of the plant's 650 employees braved rainy weather and mud puddles for the festivities on the grounds of the Laburnum Avenue site, where operations first began in 1973. Seventeen employees were honored for having worked at the bakery 40 years or longer. Mama,If you hang out on the internet, talk to people or watch TV, then you are probably constantly being bombarded with “the best solution for weight loss.” There's a lot of noise in the weight loss industry and there's a lot of conflicting information, but I can tell you that there is only one thing you need to look for in a weight loss strategy: one you can stick with.I've spent eight years as a nutrition coach, and I've heard of just about every weight loss rule, gimmick or program out here.Don't eat carbs after darkOnly do fasted workoutsDrink shakes to get the nutrients you needEat high protein and fat with minimal carbsEat six, smaller meals a dayIntermittent fast and only eat for 4-6 hours a dayTake pills to limit your cravingsWhile there is some merit to these ideas, they don't need to be hard and fast rules for every single person. For example, the no carbs after dark rule came about to stop people from eating too much at night. Carbs are the body's first source of energy, so to optimize burning carbs rather than storing them it's better to eat them earlier in the day; when you need quick burning energy to keep up with life. But if you eat them later at night when you're more likely to be sitting or resting, then you don't get the chance to burn them as quickly, which can lead to storing more energy. While it sounds like great advice to not eat carbs later in the evening; it doesn't work for everyone. What about people who work night shifts, should they stick to that rule? Of course not! They need carbs at night when they're tired and need energy!Yes, it might be more optimal to eat carbs earlier in the day, but that doesn't mean your body is automatically storing it as fat every time you eat late at night. If you're gaining weight, it's more likely that you're overeating in general or you're just not eating the right balance of food. The one lesson I've learned along my weight loss journey, and in coaching hundreds of women, is that doable is always better than optimal.I can't tell you how many women that women have told me that they feel like a failure or like they just aren't meant to be healthy because they can't keep up with super restrictive fad diets. But it's not their fault! Traditional diets or anything that says it will provide quick results will set you up for failure because it's not doable long-term!Yeah, you might lose weight in a few weeks, but once you stop taking the pills, drinking the shakes, or eat a freaking cupcake on your kid's birthday you gain it all back! What is doable long-term is eating a balanced diet that doesn't restrict you. Finding a way of eating that allows you to have your favorite foods and drinks as a part of your healthy habits - not as a cheat day - will not only help you lose weight but you'll be able to maintain that weight too.Start where you're at - not where you think you should beOne of the reasons that so many people “fail” at dieting is that they believe that they should be able to do any diet perfectly from the time they start. But I promise you that the healthy people you're looking up to didn't start perfect and you don't need to either. One of the very first things I have my clients do, when they start my Macros Made Easy program, is to track their food without changing any of their current eating habits. And this is hard for a lot of people! They think that they're eating poorly and they don't want anyone to know about it. They think they're starting at a bad spot and they want to jump into whatever is healthy rather than where they're at.But the truth is that if I started everyone off with the same “healthy” macros it wouldn't work for anyone!Because no one's macros are the same! No one's nutritional needs are the same. We are individuals who need individual plans. And those individual plans start with where you're at right now.Sometimes mamas come to me who are overeating and the first step after seeing where they're at is to cut their food down a little bit.Other times, mamas come to me and they're undereating so the first step after seeing where they're at is to increase their food a little bit. (Believe it or not, this happens more than overeating!)We make small adjustments over time until they reach their goals. I don't ever ask them to go from eating 50 grams of protein a day to 150 grams a day! Because they wouldn't be able to keep that up! It's way too big of a jump and they'd want to hunt me down because they were miserable.Instead we up it by 5-10 grams at a time until we reach whatever a healthy amount of protein is for you. That's how you build healthy habits. You start where you're at and you make small, doable changes until you reach your goals. Those small steps are how you make your results last. You build up to your goals instead of trying to reach them all in one day.Learn how to be accountable for your food instead of restricting itPlain and simple, restricting food groups isn't healthy. Saying you're never going to eat carbs again for the rest of your life so you can weigh a certain amount isn't good for you! It's not good for your body - because your body requires all three macronutrients, protein, fat and carbs. And it's not good for your mind!On one of my client calls, I was talking to my client Rebekah about her win for the week, which was that she bought and ate her favorite crackers for the first time in years! She loves Wheat Thins but somewhere along her health journey, she got the idea that they were bad for her. So she stopped eating them. She never bought them because she knew she couldn't control herself if they were even in the house. She even held this belief as she was working with me and learned about food freedom and how to eat a balanced diet that included her other favorite foods like chocolate chip cookies and Dr. Pepper! But Wheat Thins were always off the table. Then, one day she was planning out her meals for the week and she had a chicken salad on her menu. She was trying to think of something that would go well with it and Wheat Thins popped into her head. She looked up the nutritional information on them and realized they would fit into her plan! Wheat Thins weren't bad, she just had to budget for them! So she bought a box, and she didn't binge on them! She didn't go crazy because it was a forbidden food anymore. She dished out the portion she wanted and got to enjoy something she'd been denying herself for years!Mama, there are no good and bad foods. Just food accountability. When you learn to be accountable for your food you don't have to follow all the “optimal” rules for weight loss. You can eat carbs after dark. You can fuel your body for a workout. You can eat carbs, fats and all the food you love!Once you drop all the restrictive rules from your nutrition you'll find that the weight comes off even faster because you're no longer attaching guilt, shame and regret to the food you eat! There's a massive connection between weight loss and how you think and feel about food and I teach busy mamas on the go how to find the nutritional and mental balance so that they can reach their goals. If you're tired of rules that leave you annoyed, frustrated and stuck then let's ditch them! A few assorted 2023 goals that I have no doubt I can achieve:* Finish this box of Wheat Thins* Take down holiday decorations before July.* Read … some books.* Let the dogs in.Hey, look at that. Already I can check off #1. Jess, Sarina and I just aren't feeling the goals this year. Oh, we have them. But they're mostly “do that again” or “yeah, stick with that” kinda things. . I'm gonna write another book. Jess is going to promote her speaking and work on her fiction. Sarina is going to write… four books. I think. Don't hold her to that, it's just what I remember. More than me, anyway, but happily it's not a competition. And then we have dreams for the ways all of that will be received, which we know aren't goals because they're out of our control. We've figured out that part—good goals have action items, are achievable and can be checked off. You either wrote a book or you didn't. You either pitched 60 agents or you didn't, completed the online French course or not, went to the art class or stayed home. Did you “draw more” or “become a writer” or ““watch less Netflix”? Who the heck knows? But did you write 500 words, or spend 30 minutes researching agents, or read a chapter or sign up for a class? That you can check off. Want to hear more about that? Here are a couple of tools we've come up with over the years. So, we've got that. And we set those. But as it turned out, none of us is aiming for the moon this year, or even forming a team for future moon launches. We're kind of just all trying to hold tight and enjoy the ride.So my question is—is that just us? Because we're a bit settled, and have family things to cope with, and need to recover from the recent whirlwinds? Or is no one feeling big goal energy this year? Spill, kids, and if you ARE swinging for the stars, we will cheer you on. * Buy more Wheat Thins.Got a writer-dilemma we could help with? Wanna come on the pod and talk it through? What could you learn from one of the largest snack companies in the world? Lonny James Ruben from Bunny James Boxes got to learn just that this year as a member of the 2022 CoLab cohort. Bunny James Boxes make gift boxes for people with specialty diets, allergies, and eating styles. And they provide this niche gifting solution for individuals, businesses, and retailers. They were already on a fast path to growth when Lonny decided to apply for Mondelēz International's CoLab program. With iconic brands like Oreo, Cadbury, belVita, and Wheat Thins, Mondelēz International holds the #1 global position in biscuits (cookies and crackers) and #2 in chocolate. They've also acquired a few fast growing brands you probably recognize like Hu, Perfect Bar, and Tate's Bake Shop in the last few years. Brands selected for their CoLab cohort get access to a 12 week program, a $20,000 grant, 1:1 mentoring, and so much more, which you'll hear about in this episode. It's one things for me to tell you about the program, but it's another to really dig into an alumnus experience, so that's what we're going to do today. Listen in to learn: - Why Lonny founded Bunny James Boxes and pivoted from vending machines; - Why he applied to the CoLab program and why it exceeded all his expectations; - What it was like to be in the program and how he leveraged Mondelēz International's resources to help grow Bunny James Boxes; - Tips for applying to the next cohort of CoLab; - And more! This week, Kirk and Lindsey dive deep into crackers; the one food that's always in your pantry but you're just not quite sure how it got there. The two debate Wheat Thins vs. Triscuits, cheese crackers vs. peanut butter crackers, does everything taste good on a Ritz, should Goldfish be considered crackers, are keto crackers worth it, and how crackers with raisins in them are straight BS. Then Kirk attempts to swallow six Saltines in one minute without any water. Will he succeed? Many business leaders have added an emphasis on 'experience' in their approach to management. There is user experience, customer experience, and - from a procurement and supply chain perspective - a supplier experience. Each one of these needs to be understood and fostered before the associated relationships can live up to their full potential. In this episode, based on a Dial P for Procurement livestream, Quentin Roach, Senior Vice President of Supply Chain & Chief Procurement Officer at Mondelez International and Costas Xyloyiannis, CEO and Co-founder at HICX, join Supply Chain Now Co-hosts Kelly Barner and Scott Luton to discuss the supplier experience from both the buy-side and technology provider perspectives. - Where friction is most likely to exist in the corporate procurement process, how companies can reduce it, and why most procurement teams are probably overthinking what they need to do first - Whether or not the Pareto Principle (the 80/20 split) is still a valid methods for segmenting the supply base - How the fast moving consumer goods space (FMCG) was affected by consumer demand changes in 2020, and how Mondelez International's brands have been able to adapt (Oreo, Wheat Thins, Ritz and more) This episode was hosted by Scott Luton and Kelly Barner. This episode was absolutely selfish. I've been in a really funky space lately. I'm not depressed, but I'm not exactly happy. I'm meh. I feel like I'm in this weird in-between. It doesn't feel like the height of Covid, but it still feels lousy. I'm vaccinated, but my 9-year-old isn't. We're wearing masks again. I worry about the kids having to quarantine or getting Covid. Damn you, Delta (and whatever else is coming!). I was looking forward to a fall and winter of unfettered indoor dining, the movies, museums. I didn't want to worry if I'd get Covid and pass it on to my kids or vulnerable friends or anyone else. I didn't want to worry school could go remote again. I didn't want to worry about traveling to see my mom at Christmas. But I do. Hitting my 50s, Covid, losing my job–has helped me narrow my focus in so many ways. I want a job I love. I want friends I can depend on, who build me up, not tear me down. I want time with my husband and family and I want to spend more time outside. I've always known nature was a healer for me. Some of my best and most peaceful memories are hikes with my mom in the White Mountains or our trip to Alaska or an ill-advised/prepared "trek" on part of the Appalachian Trail. That meal of Wheat Thins and summer sausage, cross-legged on a crest was one of the best I've eaten. So this episode celebrates people who have focused their lives to be outdoors and explores the spots they reccommend to unplug, walk, climb, breathe and be. www.thehinghamcast.com

Here's how to grocery shop + meal prep for Christmas day when grocery stores are closed and you want the family to "feed themselves" while you enjoy your day. In the podcast, I "walk you through" the grocery aisles to choose food for Christmas Day. I also share how to make my famous "peach tea" and simple syrup. I hope this is helpful to you on a day that you want to spend relaxing (not cooking). Food for Christmas Day When grocery stores close for 24 hours on Christmas day, it is great to be fully prepared with food in the pantry and the fridge. Here is my grocery list for pre-Christmas Day shopping. I also share how I instruct everyone that "DIY" dining is the name of the game after everyone enjoys Christmas morning. After all, Mama (or dad in some cases) has cooked, wrapped, and cleaned non-stop and needs to enjoy the day like everyone else. The following foods are on my Christmas day grocery list. I buy these things so that we will have plenty of food and snacks on hand for the 12-24 hours that grocery stores are closed. We have several "meals" that we have enjoyed on Christmas day over the years. Taco bar, DIY sandwiches, DIY salads, etc...Below is a list that encompasses most of what you need to make any of these meals available to your family on Christmas day. Sliced deli meat + cheese Sabra or Boar's Head hummus My Three Sons Pimento Cheese White Queso (La Banderita?) Fresh Gourmet Salsa Pita Bread or flatbread Cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, washed Romaine, carrots, cauliflower & broccoli (bagged), avocadoes milk, yogurt, sour cream, Dean's French onion dip, eggs, sharp cheddar 3 lbs package ground turkey + taco seasoning Good Seasons Italian Dressing Crystal Light Peach Tea Sandwich bread + small soft rolls or yeast rolls + Carb Balance soft tortillas chips, Tostitos, Wheat Thins or Simple Mills crackers paper plates + bowls Meal prep for Christmas Day Make simple syrup equal parts sugar + water; put in the fridge. Make salad dressing from a Good Seasons packet. Boil some eggs for salad. Make tuna salad & chicken salad (or buy locally). Brown ground turkey; make taco meat with it. Put in a container in the fridge. Cut fruit and bag/refrigerate. Chop lettuce, tomatoes & all veggies for tacos. Grate cheese. Put in containers in the fridge. Place white queso near all of this. Make peach tea with simple syrup. Give everyone instructions for "serve yourself" dining. Tell everyone where all the food is located and what the options are. What foods are where. Specify paper plates, bowls & utensils. Remind them that mom (or the cook) is off-duty:-) Enjoy your Christmas day!!!
