Episode 36 - Mary Lesser - Sports Nutrition and Considerations for the Young Athlete with GI DisordersIn this episode of Nutrition Pearls: the Podcast, co-hosts Nikki Misner and Jen Smith speak with Mary Lesser PhD, RD, dietitian on the topic of Sports Nutrition.  Originally a Northern California native, Mary is currently an Assistant Adjunct Professor in the Nutrition and Metabolic Biology Department at the University of California, Berkeley as well as a Pediatric Sports Nutrition Dietitian at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals. Nutrition is and has been her major field of study for the past twenty+ years! The field has allowed her to pursue her passion for research, education, as well as practicing in the clinical setting. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree at UC Davis in Clinical Nutrition with a minor in Human Development and then went on to complete her Master of Science Degree in Nutrition at Tufts University in Boston, MA. While working on her Masters, she completed her Dietetic Internship at Tufts Medical Center and is currently a Registered Dietitian. She then returned to UC Davis to complete her PhD in Nutritional Biology, with an emphasis in Developmental Nutrition and then moved down to the Bay Area to complete a postdoctoral fellowship at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute.Mary chose Nutrition because she has always felt that following a healthy lifestyle and eating pattern are very important and has always incorporated (as well as encouraged) this philosophy into her own life as well as the life of others. She is one who likes to have a little variety in her life so as of right now, her current (and future!) plans include a career that involves research, clinical work, teaching, and translating science into community outreach + policy/advocacy efforts. In research, she is interested in investigating the nutrition environment during early development (pregnancy, lactation, early childhood) to observe (if any) persistent developmental effects (of the fetus, neonate, child) that may increase or decrease chronic disease risk later in life. And in practice, Mary enjoys working with young athletes on their Sports Nutrition needs and goals.Nutrition Pearls is supported by an educational grant from Mead Johnson Nutrition.Resources:www.ucsfbenioffchildrens.org/-/media/project/ucsf/ucsf-bch/pdf/sports-nutrition-2016-meals-snacks.pdf?rev=177fc88db39d4ef096bc3760a73c5a8eProduced by: Corey IrwinNASPGHAN - Council for Pediatric Nutrition Professionalscpnp@naspghan.org

Drawing on two decades of experience as a school psychologist and sport psychologist practitioner Adrian Moldovan shares insights from his recent program with a boys' basketball team aged 10 to 12. He describes how he approached the challenge of making mindfulness accessible to children still developing their body awareness and emotional regulation skills. From simple, sensory-based exercises like the “candy exercise,” which invited the young athletes to experience an ordinary object through all their senses, to playful group activities designed to build team cohesion, Adrian reveals how mindfulness can help young athletes become more present and engaged without feeling overwhelmed or judged. The conversation also touches on the common barriers and misconceptions that arise when introducing these practices, such as initial skepticism from parents and coaches or the children's difficulty understanding abstract concepts. Adrian also explains the importance of modeling non-judgmental acceptance, especially when exercises, like the body scan, don't unfold as planned, and reflects on the “mental training paradox,” where everyone acknowledges the importance of mental preparation but struggles to implement it consistently. Throughout the episode, he offers practical suggestions for professionals and parents who want to nurture self-awareness, focus, and resilience in children, while respecting their developmental stage and keeping the process engaging. Whether you're involved in youth sports, education, or simply curious about applied sport psychology, this conversation offers thoughtful perspectives on helping young people grow from the inside out.If you are visually impaired or blind, or if you know someone who is, and would like to take part to the series of Martial Attitude Voice podcast interviews exploring touch, confidence and blindness or if you would like to join in the Martial Attitude Training workshops now running in London every Sunday, please do keep in touch via Instagram or according to your communication preferences, all available  HERE.     Sincerely, Mathias Alberton Founder CEO at Martial Attitude C.I.C. He previously founded Building Better Athletes (BBA Performance) in Dubuque, Iowa, training athletes from youth to pro levels. Michael also coached at Clarke College and the University of Dubuque. A former record-setting wide receiver, he won the 2011 Gagliardi Trophy and still holds the NCAA all-divisions career receptions record (463). In athletic development, the “5 S's of performance”: Strength, Speed, Stamina, Suppleness, and Skill are often brought up. What tends to be the case is that those 5 elements are weighted in that order, with skill mentioned, but rarely or ever studied in how to improve it. On today's show, Michael discusses his own creative approach to skill development in American football players with an emphasis on building artistry and adaptability in his players. He speaks on the nature of constraint-based coaching that helps athletes improve their arsenal of movements on the field, as well as their decision-making skills amid chaos. We also touch on the crossover between basketball and football, and ultimately, the art of long-term development of skill in one's sport and as an athlete in general. College athletes can handle more volume and complexity, but the fundamentals still matter. What to try: Prioritize clean movement and buy-in over complexity in high school settings. Introduce more autonomy and load management with college athletes. Don't assume physical maturity—meet athletes where they are. Balancing Strength and Movement Skill in Team Settings – [5:03] It's not just about chasing strength numbers. There's value in seeing how strength integrates into movement, especially in large team environments. What to try: Cycle in movement tasks—like crawling, balancing, or landing—in warmups and finishers. Use strength work to support athletic expression, not just output. Keep the athlete's sport in mind—strength is a tool, not the goal. Developing the Skill of Lifting in Young Athletes – [11:09] Lifting isn't just strength—it's a skill. For youth athletes, you're teaching how to move with awareness under load. What to try: Start with basic isometrics and bodyweight patterns to teach control. Add load only when position and rhythm are reliable. Use slow eccentrics and pauses to reinforce stability. Rethinking Readiness: Performance vs. Output – [15:34] Readiness isn't just about lifting heavier or running faster—it's about how an athlete moves and feels. Output is one piece, not the whole picture. What to try: Include subjective readiness check-ins before training. Look for signs of fluidity, control,

This episode is a rebroadcast of episode #25 of The Crafted Conversation with Marcus Sharrad. Enjoy. ---In this expansive conversation, Dr Craig Harrison invites us to rethink the purpose and practice of youth development. It's not about designing perfect athletes, but about crafting safe, playful, expressive environments where young people can explore who they are, not just what they can do.Marcus and Craig explore the ecological complexity of performance, the importance of letting go of control, and the centrality of coaching the person before the plan. From storytelling and psychological safety to mentorship and emotional literacy, this episode is a masterclass in compassionate, curious leadership.Key Concepts:Environments shape behaviour – Coaching doesn't happen in a vacuum. We must understand the child's world, not just their session.Performance is personal – Narrative identity, not outcome identity, should guide the athlete journey.Belonging matters as much as skill – Every athlete needs to feel safe to explore, question, and grow.Mentorship is not a programme — it's a culture – It lives in every conversation, check-in, and reflective pause.Freedom and structure are not opposites – The best coaching holds both gently, in balance.Reflection over reaction – True development invites athletes to think, not just comply.---Sign up for Craig's newsletter (Beyond the Game) at http://www.drcraigharrison.com/Get Craig to speak at your club or school here.  Connect with Craig:Instagram: instagram.com/drcraigharrison/Facebook: facebook.com/drcraigharrisonTwitter: twitter.com/drcraigharrisonSupport the showSupport the show

Key Learning Points: ·         Seek to explore ways to incorporate more flexibility and adaptability in training sessions to better accommodate neurodivergent players. ·         Develop strategies to build trust with parents, encouraging them to openly share information about their child's needs. ·         Provide training for coaches on recognizing and supporting neurodivergent behaviours, and implementing effective intervention techniques. ·         Investigate the feasibility of creating designated "safe spaces" within the training environment for players to self-regulate when needed. ·         Factor in the psychological planning of training sessions to consider the emotional responses of players. ·         Utilise additional coaching resources to provide one-on-one support for players who may need it during sessions. Today, the case study that David Charlton and his colleague Colm O'Donoghue discuss is connected to a 16-year-old swimmer who spends a lot of time online checking his rivals out, be that on social media or reviewing stats and results.  The implication is that his motivation and focus when training fluctuates and negative emotions such as jealousy and anxiety are triggered.   As well, potential challenges with his own self-esteem and how he feels about himself can be evident.  David and Colm offer some ideas to shift his focus so that he is able to enhance his motivation and feel better in himself. Key Learning Points: Social comparison theory, proposed by Leon Festinger, suggests that individuals evaluate their own abilities, opinions, and accomplishments by comparing themselves to other people.  This theory suggests that we have an natural drive to evaluate ourselves, and social comparison is a primary method we use to do so. Develop a pre-race routine to get into the right mindset, consider when you want to be online and not especially as the race draws closer. Set SMART goals focused on personal improvement. Review your emotional experience and self-talk when your online, how does it make your feel? What are you telling yourself about situations that you come across? Wondering how to best parent your competitive athlete or dancer? Dr. Chelsea Pierotti joins Dr. Amy and Sandy on this episode of the Brainy Moms podcast to reveal the psychology behind peak performance and what parents can do to help—and sometimes, what they should stop doing.Drawing from her background as both a sports psychologist and professional ballet dancer, Dr. Chelsea shares why dancers face unique mental challenges as "artistic athletes." Unlike team sports with constant reactions, dancers follow choreographed routines that leave dangerous space for overthinking. She explains why even elite performers need strategies to stay present while letting physical skills flow automatically. The conversation takes a fascinating turn as Dr. Chelsea unpacks why training for unexpected difficulties builds genuine confidence. Just as Olympic champion Michael Phelps practiced with broken goggles, dancers need to experience music cuts or costume malfunctions in practice to develop true resilience. This "training for the rare" teaches athletes they can handle anything—a skill that transfers far beyond performance.Parents will particularly appreciate Dr. Chelsea's clear guidance on their proper role in youth sports. She advises parents to be supportive managers handling logistics, while gradually teaching children to communicate directly with coaches. Her mantra "control the controllables" helps athletes focus exclusively on their attention, actions, and effort—letting go of judges, referees, and other external factors they cannot change.Perhaps most valuable is our discussion of redefining success beyond winning. By focusing on the "gain" (progress made) rather than the "gap" (distance from perfection), athletes develop healthier mindsets and lasting motivation. The 1% rule she shares demonstrates how small daily improvements compound into remarkable growth.Ready to help your young performer develop mental toughness that serves them in competition and beyond?
