Riptides very own writer, and one of Port Mac's golden child's, Dougy Smith parks his corpse up on the lounge to discuss the happenings and goings of life as a fully fledged boog tragic. With memories of Tahitian freight trains being wrangled, navigating Port Mac's boog politics and raising kids with minimal screen time, my conversation with Doug was broad and enthralling as I discovered what really makes this man tick. If you haven't checked out his recent articles on the Riptide website then you best be putting that on the weeks to do list. The man is a fantastically well read and written published author who lays down serious heat when he picks up the quill.

There you are plodding along your perfectly planned career. Doing the things you're supposed to do, even when they feel soul sucking. Putting off the dream (or abandoning it altogether) until you feel established enough to take a risk. Time to stop avoiding the riptides and undertows. They pull you under, take you off course- and make you think about what you really want to be doing. Let's explore how these "disruptors" actually keep you on the right course. Know the difference between a distractor and a disruptor. A disruptor will tug at you- notice yourself saying "I'd love to but..." "I'll do it when..." "I can't because..." Take inspired action and watch opportunities magnetize to you, even if they feel off course. Psalm 147:11 The LORD takes pleasure in those who fear Him, In those who hope in His mercy. Here is the second episode in the We Take Our Turns series. We Take Our Turns is a book I wrote with gathered bits and pieces of my journals. Because of the nature of the book, you can listen through in any order. Along with reading through the pages, I will share extended thoughts and backstories with you. In last week's episode where I introduced this series, I mentioned the inspiration for this book came when my attention span was meager and I needed smaller bits, like breadcrumbs. HOPE IN HIS MERCY was a breadcrumb that sustained me for days, weeks, and months. Now those words are a landmark, a memorial stone of how He met me. When you don't know what to do — hope in His mercy. Episode Summary: Today, we speak with Steve Crowley, President of Crowley Pool Service. Steve initially did not choose to work in the pool industry; yet, 15 years later, he has achieved considerable success throughout his career and holds many certifications and awards including being featured as Pool Pro Magazine's 30-under-40 Pool Industry Leaders. Through the years Crowley Pool Service has grown into one of the area's largest pool service companies. It offers a wide variety of services for both above-ground and in-ground swimming pools. During the winter months, Crowley Pool Service specializes in commercial and residential snow management. After sharing his inspiring story of entering the pool industry on a whim at 16 to starting and managing his own business years later, Steve talks about the unique challenges of servicing pools in the Northeast, keeping his employees busy during the Winter season, and the nuances of cleaning vinyl liner and above-ground pools. Topics Discussed: 02:17 - Steve's journey in the pool industry 19:48 - From managing a company to starting his own 27:27 - Going through six months without a job 31:38 - Keeping employees busy during the off-season 39:29 - Running seasonal pool services 45:30 - Servicing vinyl liner and above-ground pools 48:30 - Steve's advice for succeeding in the industry Sponsors: Skimmer Leslie's Lyon Financial Connect with Guest: Website Facebook Instagram Twitter YouTube Connect with Pool Chasers: Website Instagram Facebook Facebook Group Twitter YouTube Patreon Key Quotes from Episode: Pretty much everything I've ever learned in the pool industry is trial-and-error, either just going for it or watching someone on YouTube or in person. The biggest challenge with above-ground pools is that they're very flimsy. You've got to be really gentle. We use Riptides for all our cleanings. My biggest thing is pushing myself out of my comfort zone. You've got to be willing to do stuff you don't want to do. You've got to be willing to learn, too—and learn on your own. If you're not willing to seek out education, you're never going to figure out how to solve the problem.
If you've ever been caught in a rip tide, you know how terrifying it can be. In today's episode, Eastside's teaching pastor Mike Breaux shares a recap of this past weekend's message on how God resues us from the cultural rip tides we so easily get carried away in.
Hello Planeteers! This week's episode is hosted by Dr. Chuck Darwin, and he tells us all about tides-what they are, what causes them, and what the different types of tides are. Did you know you can tell what type of tide the Ocean will have by knowing the type of tide common in the area and what phase the Moon is in? We talked about Moon Phases a couple of episodes ago, so you should know the Moon Phase just by looking at it. If not, be sure to catch that episode. The Moon is a fascinating subject!Of course, this episode comes with a free PDF you can download that has a project you can make, shows examples of different types of tides, and even helps you identify what a rip current looks like. You can get that HERE.Remember that Rip Tides and Rip Currents are different things, but are often referred to as the same. If someone tells you there is a dangerous Rip Tide, they probably mean Rip Current, so be aware that swimming conditions are dangerous. If you get caught in a Rip Current while swimming, remember to swim sideways or at an angle, instead of directly toward the shore in order to escape it. The PDF shows pictures of Rip Currents so you can identify where they are, but that can be difficult to see while you are in the water. Stay safe this Summer! If you want to watch the episode and see Dr. Chuck Darwin, you can do that HERE.If you want 10 ways to get your kids outside and off their screens with very little effort on your part, get the free report at https://www.weirdandwackyplanet.com/10-ways-report If you want to read the Field Journal Blog, you can do that HERE.Until next week, have a Safe Swimming adventure in YOUR neighborhood!Website: https://www.weirdandwackyplanet.com/ FaceBook: https://facebook.com/weirdandwackyplanet Instagram: https://instagram.com/weirdandwackyplanet Twitter: https://twitter.com/kbcarrauthor email: naturejustgotreal@gmail.com Get the Weird & Wacky Planet series: https://www.amazon.com/K-B-Carr/e/B00XIZ9ASW Get a FREE ebook: https://www.weirdandwackyplanet.com/free-book
A string of drownings in the Rockaways have prompted public outcry over the city's decision to not staff the popular beaches while undergoing a federal resiliency project to fix the jetties. Jake Offenhartz, a reporter at Gothamist, joins to discuss the incidents and take your reactions.
University of Windsor professor Chris Houser tells us about Smart Beach, his real-time, data-driven warning system for rip currents.
Riptides and currents are like raging rivers in the ocean. Sometimes they are so strong that it is impossible to paddle directly against them and make way. Often they can drag the ignorant surfer into serious harm’s way. Ignorance is not your friend in these situations. By simply realizing the strength and direction of the rip, the savvy navigator can paddle at an angle that releases themselves from the grip of doom. The surfer can make their way to the desired destination from that point. What applies to one thing applies to many. Having a relationship with actuality (what is actually happening) and interacting with truth as the greatest version of ourselves (a fantastic attitude and maximum effort) is the tried and true formula for success in every area of life. What are the forces at work in our culture that take us away from God's purposes in our life? How do we recognize these very dangerous Rip Tides and what wisdom does the Scripture give us in countering them?
Take Home Reading is a new short-form audio series for readers and writers – shining a spotlight on Australian writers with recently released books. In each instalment, you'll be introduced to a writer, learn a little about what they've been reading lately, and hear a short reading from their latest work. Find it on the Wheeler Centre podcast. In this episode we're talking to Kirsten Alexander about her debut novel, Riptides. Set in Joh Bjelke-Petersen's Queensland during a time of tremendous social upheaval, Riptides is a gripping family drama about dreams, choices and consequences. 'In some ways I thought it's not a straight line ever from the past to the present… I think our country is still evolving, we're still coming into our own being, and I think we still have a lot to learn about how to treat one another and the space we're in. But some of the lessons we learnt in the past we just throw away very easily. I'm not sure if other countries do that, but Australia certainly seems to struggle to learn from our past.' Kirsten was programmed to appear in our Next Big Thing: Australiana Edition, which was unfortunately cancelled as part of our preventative measures to stem the spread of coronavirus COVID-19. Riptides is out now through Penguin Random House.Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

To open up the conversation around mental health, Poppy Reid chats to Mark Callaghan (of The Riptides, Gang Gajang), who is also the Advisor of member services at APRA AMCOS and a Board member at music industry charity Support Act. Also joining Poppy is Hayley Mary, frontwoman of ARIA and APRA Award winning band The Jezabels. Disclaimer: This podcast episode a discussion only and certainly not a 'how-to' for those looking for a guide on how to deal with mental health issues.
