Ford of Canada sells three all-electric vehicles, the F-150 Lightning pickup truck, the E-Transit cargo van and the Mustang March-E, the latter of which outsold it's gasoline powered stablemates three-to- one in 2024. That all contributed to a fantastic sales year last year for Ford's EV segment, posting an amazing 66.1 per cent increase. On this episode of our special View from the C-Suite series, Andrew McCredie talks with Paul Roy, the man who oversees Ford of Canada's Model e program. Among many talking points, Paul cites the federal and provincial incentives, that have been paused, as integral to maintaining an upward trajectory of EV sales in this country. Without them, he expects sales to dip in the coming year, but has no doubt that electric vehicles will continue to find new buyers across the country. Learn more about your ad choices. Shoot us a Text.Is NADA really only a week away? Today, we're looking back at Gary Gilchrist's time as 2024 NADA Chairman, seeing how Rivian became the best selling electric van in the country, and examining Starbucks new code of conduct and how baristas are responding.Show Notes with links:Yesterday, we covered incoming NADA Chairman Tom Castriota's priorities for 2025, so today, it's only fitting that we give 2024 Chairman Gary Gilchrist the floor for a bit. As he prepares to hand over leadership, Gilchrist emphasizes the importance of strong dealer advocacy in Washington and continued defense of the franchise system amid direct-sales threats and regulatory changes. On EV Adoption: “[Dealers have] spent millions of dollars in our facilities to make this transformation, but it is the consumer choice, and the consumers are not adopting it. [W]e're at 7.8% nationally for fleet adoption, so we've got a ways to goOn the CARS Rule: “NADA has been at the tip of the spear on that. We've challenged it, and now we're just waiting for the ruling. We feel good about it, but obviously we're waiting to see where the ruling comes. On the IRA Tax Credit potentially going away: “We need that $7,500 tax credit right now as we cut the line down on EV inventory. Let's give it some time for customers to take advantage of it.”On Scout Motors: “It's a real simple answer: It will be challenged nationwide.”What he would like to see incoming Chairman Tom Castriota accomplish: 1. Defend the franchise system against direct sales. 2. Strengthen relationships with ATAEs. 3. Monitor government overreach.Rivian has taken the top spot in the electric van market, surpassing Ford with its Electric Delivery Van (EDV). Despite facing manufacturing hurdles and supply shortages, Rivian's partnership with Amazon and expansion into new fleets helped drive record-breaking sales.Rivian delivered 13,423 electric vans in 2024, a 67% increase from 2023, outpacing Ford's 12,610 E-Transit sales. The EDV's strong Q4 performance (4,397 units, +84.1% YoY) helped Rivian claim the title of best-selling electric van in the U.S.Rivian's Normal, IL plant underwent upgrades in April to improve cost efficiency but also faced temporary shutdowns in the summer due to part shortages.Starbucks Workers United (SBWU), which represents more than 11,000 baristas, is pushing for clarity and bargaining over Starbucks' new code of conduct. Ford Power Promise for EV Cars w/ Becca Anderson AZ TRT - S05 EP40 (256) 10-13-2024 What We Learned This Week: Ford - Classic Car Company with 100 Years + History EV Car adoption is a growing trend Battery Charging at Home + on the Road Software & Service is part of the Ford Promise on new EVs F150 & Mustang Models are available as EVs Guest: Becca Anderson Senior Director Ford e Customer Experience LKIN: https://www.linkedin.com/in/becca-anderson-cxdirector/ https://www.ford.com/electric/ In the early days of the personal auto, Americans wanted and needed the convenience, peace of mind and expert service of full-service filling stations. After taking two long all-electric road trips – one through the Western U.S. and the other across Europe – I'm convinced that the new generation of electric vehicle owners and would-be owners are also looking for convenience, peace of mind and expert service. While we've been focused on making public charging easier – including giving Ford owners access to Tesla's Superchargers with an adapter as part of BlueOval Charge Network – we have learned just how important home charging is to overall electric vehicle adoption in the U.S. Nearly 90% of shoppers say they would be more likely to buy an electric vehicle if they knew they could charge at home1. Filling up at home with electricity can be a significant cost save for many owners compared to filling up with gas. Problem is nearly half of them don't know how home charging works1. Where do you buy the charger? Who installs it? What does it cost? At the same time, we know many electric vehicle customers want 24/7 support from a real person with expertise if they are going to try new technology. Others want assurance on battery life. Yet our industry seems to want to answer these questions in a time-honored way – cash on the hood. Cheap lease deals on electric vehicles are popping up everywhere. Ford believes it will take more than jumbo rebates to truly break through with the estimated 19 million people in the U.S. interested in electric vehicles. It will take – you guessed it – convenience, peace of mind, and expert service. It will take a modern-day version of the friendly filling station, only this time you “fill 'er up” at home. That's the idea behind the Ford Power Promise that we are announcing today. Here are the details: Home is Where the Charge is: It's simple. Buy or lease a retail Ford Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning or E-Transit and take a complimentary home charger with you or have it delivered, and when you're ready, an expert comes out to install it at no charge for a standard install. This takes the guesswork out of installation, including costs, to help you save time and money by filling up at home. Less stress, more convenience. If you're a Ford Pro fleet customer, we have you covered with a commercial charging cash incentive. On-the-Road Charging: Road trips don't happen every day, but when you are on the road, you need to know where to fill up. Our BlueOval Charge Network automatically searches for chargers across various networks, including Electrify America and Tesla Superchargers and adds charging stops to your route via the Connected Navigation in the vehicle. With Plug and Charge, you plug in when you get there, and the payment is automatically made via your FordPass account. It's that easy. Battery Confidence: We're confident in the quality of our batteries, and we want you to be confident, too. That's why we provide an eight-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty for every Ford electric vehicle. Ford has your battery covered. Ongoing Support and Guidance: We're dedicated to providing you with the support you need whenever you need it, including complimentary roadside assistance if your vehicle's range runs too low. We're also expanding our 24/7 Ford advisor for electric vehicle support, so you'll be talking or texting with real people. We are here when you need us. Electric vehicles are an excellent choice for many people. They are fun to drive, quiet and smooth on the road. They can help save you time and money on gas. And for the first time in a long time, filling up just got easier. Now, if I can just get one of my kids to squeegee my windshield. The move is also seen as a thaw in the frosty relations between Tesla and California after the company moved its corporate headquarters to Texas in 2021. Elon Musk and Governor Gavin Newsom made the announcement, with Newsom praising Tesla for its "visionary spirit" and record of innovation. Newsom argued that Tesla was able to become the largest passenger EV maker in the world because of the state's EV-friendly policies and tax structure. Tesla also announced that they are hiring for engineering roles in Palo Alto. - Original Source: https://www.latimes.com/business/technology/story/2023-02-22/tesla-to-open-engineering-headquarters-in-palo-alto-california SEAN RYAN WANTS TESLA FIRINGS INVESTIGATED - Summary: Sean Ryan, a state senator from New York, has called on the state's economic development agency to investigate Tesla's firing of more than 40 employees last week in response to a union organizing drive at its South Buffalo plant. Attorneys for the Tesla Workers United have filed a complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, alleging that at least 25 of those fired were in retaliation for the organizing effort. Ryan has requested documents from Tesla officials in Buffalo related to the firing of the workers. - Original Source: https://www.wgrz.com/article/news/investigations/investigative-post/sean-ryan-wants-tesla-firings-investigated/71-9542b649-6011-41ca-b91b-226274a4516a ENPHASE ENERGY DEMONSTRATES BIDIRECTIONAL EV CHARGER TECHNOLOGY - Summary: Enphase Energy has successfully demonstrated a bidirectional EV charger that enables vehicle-to-home (V2H) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) functionality and allows energy generated from solar panels to be sent directly to the EV battery. The product uses Enphase's grid-forming IQ8 Microinverters and Ensemble energy management technology, and supports both the CCS and CHAdeMO charging standards. Enphase plans to bring this charger to market in 2024, as part of an all-in-one home energy system that unlocks electrification, resilience, savings and control for homeowners. - Original Source: https://chargedevs.com/newswire/enphase-energy-demonstrates-bidirectional-ev-charger-technology/ FORD STUDY SHOWS HEATED INTERIOR PANELS COULD SAVE EV RANGE - Summary: Ford conducted a study to test which system is more efficient for keeping the cabin temperature comfortable in E-Transit vans - the traditional HVAC system or heated interior panels. The study found that panels used 13% less energy and could potentially increase EV range by 5%. It was suggested that this is due to the panels retaining heat even with frequent door openings. Luxury automakers such as BMW and Mercedes have been offering heated armrests for years and it is possible that heated interior panels could become more common in the near future as a way to improve EV range. - Original Source: https://www.autoblog.com/2023/02/22/ford-heating-efficiency-study-interior-panels-hvac/?guccounter=1 EV CHARGING INFRASTRUCTURE IS ‘INADEQUATE AND PLAGUED WITH NON-FUNCTIONING STATIONS': J.D. POWER - Summary: J.D. Power's ongoing study shows that inoperable and poorly maintained public EV charging stations are increasingly frustrating drivers. More than one in five charging attempts fail, with these failures attributed to 72% malfunctioning or out-of-service chargers. EV owners in high-density areas are particularly frustrated with the lack of available chargers. The White House has announced that Tesla will open some of its charging network to non-Tesla vehicles, but there is skepticism about how open the network will be. - Original Source: https://www.utilitydive.com/news/ev-charging-infrastructure-inadequate-non-functioning-stations/643277/ MICHIGAN WANTS $750 MILLION TO PREP SITE FOR FORD EV BATTERY PLANT ON TOP OF $1 BILLION INCENTIVES DEAL - Summary: Michigan economic development officials have asked lawmakers to provide $750 million to support Ford Motor Co.'s new $3.5 billion electric vehicle battery factory in Marshall. David Welch, Detroit Bureau Chief, Bloomberg and Author of Charging Ahead, General Motors, Mary Bara, and the Reinvention of an American Icon joined Grayson Brulte on The Road To Autonomy Podcast to discuss market consolidation in the electric and autonomous vehicle markets along with his new book. The conversation begins with David sharing his thoughts on market consolidation in the autonomous vehicle market and who he thinks could potentially be acquired. Not all of these companies have to sell right now, but if capital markets stay as tight as they are, I think you are going to see a lot of action there. – David WelchOn the electric vehicle side of the equation, EV start-ups are having a hard time raising cash and when they successful raise capital, the capital is expensive. Some of the EV companies are spreading themselves too thin by focusing on multiple markets instead of having a a singular focus on developing a great electric vehicle. A subset of the electric vehicle market that is becoming over saturated is the last-mile electric van delivery market as GM scales BrightDrop and Ford scales their E-Transit van.Anyone trying to get into this business, including Rivian, they are going to have a tough time because Ford and GM not only have vans that are already being built, they have the industrial prowess and the factories to make a big go of it. – David WelchOutside of the electrification of vans, GM has made several savvy moves by acquiring Cruise and Marain among other all the while preparing for the future of mobility which will be on-demand, electric and autonomous. From an economics standpoint, GM is funding Cruise to the tune of $1 billion a year and Ford and VW are investing significant funds into Argo each and every year. The big question is, how long will GM continue to fund Cruise and how long will Ford/VW continue to fund Argo? David shares his thoughts on what the future could hold for Cruise and Argo and when GM and Ford will further tap outside investors and/or spin out the divisions once they start generating significant revenue. Waymo similar to Cruise is generating revenue from their robo-taxi business in addition to their Waymo Via trucking logistics business. Grayson asks David: what will it take and when does he think Alphabet will have their Amazon AWS moment and breakout Waymo earnings for the first time? I do not know if it's monetary or has a number on it, I think it's more a strategic thing. – David WelchWhile this will be a strategic decision, the bigger question at present time, do the autonomous vehicle companies have the right executive leadership to commercialize, scale and eventually run a profitable business? Grayson and David discuss the current state of management talent and why Cruise's competitive commercial advantage could be the executives who joined from Delta and Southwest.Commercializing an AV company to running a profitable AV company requires a different set of management skills. While management will play a key role, a larger question is; will the robo-taxi business ever be profitable in it's current state? This is not a high-margin business. It's just one that they can do and has the potential to get very big in terms of revenue. – David WelchLooking at different commercial models, do we get to the point where one of the large AV developers pivots from operating a robo-taxi business to operating a licensing business? Possibly. I think there is a business there. – David WelchBased on the way Waymo is currently structured and being owned by a large technology company instead of an auto manufacturer, it's a possibility. Grayson offers that the service could be called Waymo Drive and offered as a monthly add-on option for JLR vehicles. The core software would run on Google Cloud, leading to increased revenue in a division that is under Wall Street pressure to gain more marketshare. Or there is Walmart which is currently battling high-inflation make a move to acquire an autonomous trucking company with the long-term goal of lowering operating expenses? Grayson and David discuss as Walmart kicked the tires on acquiring Zoox prior to Amazon buying the company. Would Walmart consider acquiring Gatik?I do not think they are going to want to necessarily own these assets if they do not have to, they just need the benefits of it. – David WelchStaying on the topic of Wall Street, could SoftBank which is the second largest shareholder of Aurora with an 11.8% stake, force the company to split in two by merging the trucking side of the business with Uber Freight of which they are a 3.18% owner (of Uber) and possibly selling the car side of the business to Toyota which owns 6.72% of Aurora? Grayson and David discuss if this is possible and would it create long-term shareholder value?Or could a U.S. Class 1 Railroad make a move and look to acquire an autonomous trucking to expand their railroad operations by connecting the trains to autonomous trucks? The big question again is, does a U.S. Class 1 Railroad they have to own the company? The only reason railroad or anybody buys this is if It looks like they can no longer get access to the technology they need to work this into some sort of intermodal system. – David WelchWrapping up the conversation, David discusses his new book Charging Ahead, General Motors, Mary Bara, and the Reinvention of an American Icon.Recorded on Thursday, August 11, 2022Follow The Road To Autonomy on Apple Podcasts Follow The Road To Autonomy on TwitterSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Volvo Cars, which aims to produce only EVs by 2030, said Friday that the ACEA lobby's efforts to combat climate change aren't aggressive enough. The company said it was “better to take a different path for now.” Original Source: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-07-08/volvo-cars-quits-lobby-group-as-ev-shift-fractures-industry#xj4y7vzkg TESLA MODEL 3 RANKED GREENEST EV IN THE US, LUCID AIR COMES SECOND “The Tesla Model 3 tops this year's Bloomberg Green's Electric Car Ratings of the greenest EVs available in the United States. The Green rating for each car is a weighted score of its range divided by curb weight plus battery size, on a scale from 0 to 100 (100 being the best rating). The efficiency makes up 70% of the score, while battery size makes up 30%. Lucid took second place despite having one of the biggest battery in the ranking, with a usable capacity of 112 kWh; the Air's battery capacity is only topped by the Rivian R1S and R1T (129 kWh) and GMC Hummer EV (205 kWh). The Lucid Air does compensate with the highest EPA range of all the vehicles in the list (451 miles for the Dream Edition Performance) and the highest charging speed (20.1 miles per minute)." Original Source: https://insideevs.com/news/596828/tesla-model-3-ranked-greenest-ev-us-lucid-air-comes-second/ GERMANY TAKES BIG STEP TOWARDS INTEGRATING ELECTRIC CARS INTO GRID German parliament has empowered the federal network agency to define the framework for implementing electric vehicles (EVs) into the grid, using them as remote batteries to balance electricity demand. Using EVs as remote batteries is a long-held dream by the German electrical grid community. The technology is usually known as “vehicle-to-grid” and allows the batteries built into EVs to be drawn on in peak electricity demand. Germany's power grid is in dire need of upgrade to ensure stable supply in a country aiming to source 80% of its electricity from intermittent wind and solar by 2030. Meanwhile, the German government has begun providing additional funding for further research on the switch to EVs and their integration into the electricity grid. Original Source: https://www.euractiv.com/section/batteries/news/germany-takes-big-step-towards-integrating-electric-cars-into-grid/ THE ROAD AHEAD FOR ELECTRIC CARS RELIES ON AFFORDABILITY, NOT SCRAPPING GRANTS "Since 2011, the UK government has been providing a tax-payer funded discount on the sale of battery electric vehicles. Known as the “plug-in car grant”, it was designed to help persuade motorists make the switch from diesel or petrol and commit to electric driving. But last month the grant was scrapped with immediate effect. It wasn't exactly a surprise, given that the amount buyers were able to claim back had gradually been whittled down from £5,000 to £1,500; or that it was recently available only for new vehicles costing less than £32,000. For now, the government is essentially saying it will switch towards supporting the charging infrastructure and company car buyers. Unsurprisingly, the government's latest moves have not gone down well with a car industry struggling in a difficult economic climate. And nor should the government forget the economic challenges for drivers of soaring petrol prices and the rising cost of living. If it wants more of them to make the switch to electric vehicles, it should be much more focused on making them an affordable option for as many motorists as possible." https://theconversation.com/the-road-ahead-for-electric-cars-relies-on-affordability-not-scrapping-grants-186176 LIKE GM, FORD WILL SOON RUN OUT OF EV TAX CREDITS "General Motors reached the 200,000-vehicle cap to receive federal plug-in hybrid and electric vehicle tax credits back in early 2019, while its rivals over at Toyota also recently reached the milestone. Now Ford is also set to trigger the tax credit sunset period, with the Blue Oval reporting sales of roughly 180,000 electrified vehicles since 2009. The federal tax credit cap takes into account not only battery-electric vehicle sales, but also sales of plug-in hybrids with 4 kWh or larger. Ford had sold roughly 160,000 vehicles that meet this criteria as of the end of last year, our sister site Ford Authority reported this week. The automaker has also sold a reported 22,342 battery-electric vehicles in the first six months of 2022 between the F-150 Lightning, Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit, which would bring the total to 182,342 vehicles. This does not count sales of PHEV models like the Escape Hybrid and Explorer Hybrid, either, which would push Ford even closer to the 200,000 unit cap" Original Source: https://gmauthority.com/blog/2022/07/like-gm-ford-will-soon-run-out-of-ev-tax-credits/ ZIPCHARGE GO SEES OVER 10,000 GLOBAL PRE-ORDERS "ZipCharge, a pioneer in portable energy and electric vehicle (EV) charging, has announced that over 10,000 people have registered to pre-order a Go portable EV power bank when they go on sale in 2023. The company's engineers are currently optimising the performance of the portable EV charger's key system components - including the NMC lithium-ion battery cells and the ZipCharge-designed bi-directional AC-DC converter - in order to evaluate thermal behaviour, charging performance, safety, durability and full functionality to ensure a seamless and safe ownership experience for everyday charging." Low volume prevents offsetting development costs. The MSRP of $33,470 (+$1,175 DST), after deducting the $7,500 federal tax credit, means that the effective cost might be $27,145 - that's comparable to the new 2023 Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV, which however has almost a two times bigger battery for more than twice as much range. Range: up to 100 miles (161 km) EPA, 35.5 kWh battery pack, 30kWh useable (prismatic cells, total nominal voltage of 355 V). DC fast charging (CCS Combo) 20-80% in about 36 minutes, 37kW peak rate." Thomas appreciates the build quality and materials of the interior, and also points out some cool interior features such as the dual 12.3-inch widescreen displays, sliding center console, electric storage compartment at the center of the dash, wooden capacitive climate controls and rearview mirror digital function. The range achieved by Thomas in good weather conditions and on fairly flat terrain is more that 450 kilometers or almost 280 miles, and that's with the standard battery." Is it a backlog due to supply chain issues or a new giant battery is in the work? A Twitter user going by OttoPilot flew over Gigafactory Nevada and spotted an impressive number of Tesla Megapacks outside the factory. We see more than 500 Megapacks in this picture, which would represent up to 1.5 GWh of energy capacity. That's more than Tesla has ever delivered in an entire quarter all sitting in one place. However, it's not clear why all those battery packs are there. Tesla produces the Megapacks at Gigafactory Nevada, along with its new Megafactory in California, but it's not clear why these many Megapacks are sitting there." Show #1455 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of EV information. It's Wednesday 4th May, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. VW'S 2022 SUPPLY OF EVS IS ‘BASICALLY SOLD OUT' IN THE US AND EUROPE - Volkswagen's CEO, Herbert Diess, says that the company is “basically sold out on electric vehicles in Europe and in the United States” for the year, according to a report from the Financial Times. This means that anyone hoping to get an EV from VW, Audi, or any of the group's other brands may have to wait until 2023, as the company tries to navigate the chip shortage and production issues from COVID shutdowns in China. - According to the report, VW expects its backlog of orders to keep growing. It currently has plenty of people on the list waiting to get an EV and expects to add more throughout the year. - According to the Financial Times, VW sold just under 100,000 electric cars in Q1 2022. Tesla, according to its latest earnings, sold around 310,000 in the same time period. - When Diess spoke to The Verge earlier this year, he said that the company is trying to grow its presence in America. In his Decoder interview, he said that he expected the company's growth in the States to “mostly come from EVs,” though he did admit the company would likely see supply constraints throughout 2022. Original Source : https://www.theverge.com/2022/5/4/23057268/volkswagen-vw-electric-cars-sold-out-supply-chain VOLKSWAGEN SOLD ~99K EVS OUT OF 1.9M IN Q1 - Volkswagen recently released its January-March 2022 interim report, reporting 1.9 million vehicle sales and deliveries in the first quarter. VW's all-electric vehicle sales and deliveries made up 5.2% of total deliveries, amounting to 99,064 EVs. - Volkswagen is specifically interested in growing in the United States with plans to build a dedicated battery cell production factory in the country. The German automaker announced a $1.7 billion commitment to boosting its BEV product lineup, R&D, and manufacturing in North America. - The legacy automaker aims to achieve 10% market share in North America by 2030 as it bolsters expansion in global growth markets. Battery-electric vehicles are central to its goals. VW plans to have more than 25 electric vehicles in its BEV portfolio by the end of the decade. Since its unveiling, it has gained momentum with global automakers and Tier 1 suppliers worldwide for its robust capabilities. It's also being adopted by BMW. - In March, Volkswagen announced the addition of anonymous "swarm data" from other Volkswagen vehicles to help its advanced driver assist systems make better decisions over time, such as performing automatic lane changes. The addition of swarm data marks the next step towards vehicle systems that support fully-automated driving, according to Volkswagen. - Among its features, it can automatically keep the vehicle in the center of the lane, but can also adapt to an individual's driving style, including driving further to the left or right of the lane instead of exactly in the middle. Retail sales were down 12.3%, for the month. Trucks sales were down 17.8% to 79,768. SUVs were up 2.7% to 92,809. Sales of Ford electric vehicles increased 139 percent over last year on the strength of Mustang Mach-E and E-Transit sales. Original Source : https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/ford-motor-april-u.s.-vehicle-sales-down-10.5-electric-vehicle-sales-up-139 MUSTANG MACH-E GETS BOOST - Ford's Mustang Mach-E receives a boost in braked towing capacity to 1,000 kg for extended range models in both rear wheel drive and all-wheel drive - The Mustang Mach-E also received updates to reduce the charging time between 80-90 per cent capacity from 52 minutes to 15 minutes, a recalibration of the one-pedal driving feature for even smoother performance at lower speeds and enhancements to driver comfort. - Now on sale in Europe for over one year, the Mustang Mach-E continues to win fans. Around 88 per cent of customers to-date have moved from other car brands to Ford to experience the fun-to-drive characteristics, bold styling and driving range of the vehicle. Existing owners can also benefit from many of the recent upgrades through software or homologation updates, with future over-the-air updates planned to keep the Mustang Mach-E continuously improving. As far as the numbers go, there's an increase – though it's important to note that the company has also given the fastback EV substantial updates, including an increase in vehicle range. - The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor now starts at $48,400 – a $1,200 increase from before. The Dual Motor variant now starts at $51,900. Both prices are before the applicable $1,400 destination charge and Federal Tax Credit valued at $7,500. - Polestar 2 Dual Motor gets a bump, with a preliminary estimated 260-mile US EPA range. This increase is thanks to software improvements, implementing an 11-mile increase from the 2022 model year. The 2023 Polestar 2 Single Motor model is still rated at 270 miles by EPA. - The US-spec Polestar 2 will have an upgraded heat pump designed for better cold-weather performance, new design options across the interior and exterior of the car, and a more advanced air quality sensor. - There's a new performance software upgrade for the Performance Pack for the 2023 model year. The upgrade adds 68 horsepower and 15 lb-ft of torque to the car. The Performance Pack is only available for the dual-motor variant, but will also be available to purchase as a separate software upgrade for both existing and future dual-motor cars, with and without the Performance Pack. Show #1398 Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily, you trusted source of information. It's Tuesday 8th March, it's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. FORD DEALERS WILL FINALLY BE FORCED TO LEARN ABOUT ELECTRIC VEHICLES - In the wake of the decision to split its EV and gasoline vehicle divisions, Ford has announced that its dealers will need to "opt-in" to selling EVs along with normal combustion cars, according to Automotive News. - While the company has no apparent plans to create new dealers or work outside its network of roughly 3,100 existing retail stores, Ford CEO Jim Farley said in an interview that dealers should "get ready to specialize." - Dealers that currently sell the Mustang Mach-E, E-Transit, and are anticipating inventory of the new F-150 Lightning can continue selling them for the next year and a half. - The new dealer agreement isn't finalized yet, but Ford executives have made clear they hope for a no-inventory, direct-order model, as well as non-negotiable pricing and smaller facilities for dealers. - Tesla, one of Ford's main EV competitors, works off of a direct sale model, which Farley estimates helps Tesla save almost $2,000 per vehicle. But he added that "not everything can be done remote" and that Ford still understands the importance of brick-and-mortar dealerships in customer satisfaction. Original Source : https://www.thedrive.com/news/44619/ford-dealers-will-finally-be-forced-to-learn-about-electric-vehicles NUMEROUS FORD MUSTANG MACH-E TRIMS NO LONGER ABLE TO BE ORDERED - Ford has reportedly stopped taking orders for two Mustang Mach-E trims due to excessive demand. According to Ford Authority, who site sources "familiar with the matter", the Blue Oval will not take any new orders for Premium and California Route 1 trim levels for the remained of the 2022 model year. - Mach-E buyers will only be able to get the Extended Range battery by buying the $61,995 GT. The Select trim only comes with the Standard Range pack, although you can get it in either RWD or AWD guise. - The ongoing semiconductor shortage likely played a key role in Ford's decision. The marque has already experienced production issues this year. Last month Mach-E production was temporarily halted due to supply chain issues. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571729/mach-e-trims-not-available GM ANNOUNCES $400 MILLION EV BATTERY MATERIALS PLANT IN CANADA - General Motors and South Korea's POSCO Chemical announced plans to build a new EV battery materials plant in Quebec, Canada. - The two parties said they are working with the governments of Canada and Quebec to build a new facility that will produce cathode active material (CAM), with the investment estimated at $400 million (C$500 million). - The cathode active material produced at the new plant will go into GM's Ultium batteries, which will power electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Hummer EV and Cadillac Lyriq. CAM is a key battery material consisting of components like processed nickel, lithium and other materials making up about 40% of the cost of a battery cell. - By the end of 2025, GM plans to have capacity to build 1 million electric vehicles in North America. The company targets the majority of components by value to be sustainably sourced, processed or manufactured in North America. Original Source : https://insideevs.com/news/571967/gm-announces-400million-battery-materials-plant-canada/ NICKEL PRICE SURGE COULD THREATEN AUTOMAKERS' EV PLANS - The price of nickel is surging as investors take stock of the new global reality: Russia, a key supplier of the metal, is now facing extensive sanctions following its invasion of Ukraine. - In an unusual step, the London Metal Exchange suspended nickel trading on Tuesday morning after three-month contract prices more than doubled to over $100,000 per ton. - Nickel is a critical ingredient in the lithium-ion battery cells used in most electric vehicles sold in — and planned for — the U.S. market. Its abrupt price surge has analysts and investors raising hard questions about automakers' ambitious electric-vehicle programs. - When the battery cell is charged, lithium ions are driven from the cathode to the anode. As the cell is discharged, the ions move back to the cathode, releasing energy. In recent years, automakers have discovered that adding more nickel to the cathode can boost a battery's energy density, which translates into more range per pound of batteries. - Some use even more, in part to reduce or eliminate cobalt, and in part to increase density for premium applications: The cathodes in cells that Korean battery giant LG Chem supplies to Tesla are 90% nickel, for instance. - Given the relatively high cost of nickel, and the concerns about supply that were being voiced before Russia invaded Ukraine, automakers have signaled that lithium-ion batteries with high-nickel cathodes are likely to be limited to premium applications. Original Source : https://www.cnbc.com/2022/03/08/nickel-price-surge-could-threaten-automakers-ev-plans.htm EPA PROPOSES CUTS TO SMOG, SOOT POLLUTION FROM HEAVY TRUCKS - The Biden administration is proposing stronger pollution regulations for new tractor-trailer rigs that would clean up smoky diesel engines and encourage new technologies during the next two decades. - The proposal released Monday by the Environmental Protection Agency would require the industry to cut smog-and-soot-forming nitrogen oxide emissions by up to 90% per truck over current standards by 2031. The emissions can cause respiratory problems in humans. - Although truck manufacturers are working on battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell powertrains, the EPA says the proposal is not a zero-emissions truck requirement. Rather, the agency says there are pollution control devices in development that can keep diesels in use and still clean the air. - Environmental groups praised the EPA's action, but many urged the administration to move quickly on the proposal and then go farther toward requiring zero-emissions trucks. - The new standards would bring widespread air quality improvements, particularly in areas already exposed to heavy truck traffic, officials say. It reduces the upfront cost of buying a two-wheeler, eliminates the range anxiety and the apprehensions about the useful life of the batteries. It certainly makes a lot of sense for the B2B customers as the swapping stations can be placed in the working zones for the riders to allow them to run their bikes without waiting for the recharging of the batteries.” Original Source : https://www.electrive.com/2022/03/07/hero-electric-sun-mobility-partner-up-for-battery-swapping-in-india/ BRAND NEW SIX-FIGURE TESLA MODEL X DELIVERED WITH MISMATCHED TIRES Original Source : https://www.motortrend.com/news/tesla-model-x-mismatched-tires-delivery/ PEUGEOT REACHES OVER 1000 E-LCV SALES ALREADY IN 2022 Original Source : https://electriccarsreport.com/2022/03/peugeot-reaches-over-1000-e-lcv-sales-already-in-2022/ ENDING THE UK'S DEPENDENCE ON RUSSIAN DIESEL Original Source : https://newautomotive.org/blog/ending-dependence-on-russian-diesel TESLA SUPERCHARGER FEE GAFFE RESULTS IN MODEL 3 OWNER TEMPORARILY GETTING $600K BILL Original Source : https://www.teslarati.com/tesla-supercharger-fee-600k-gaffe-china/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM Do you think rising fuel prices at the pumps will have a direct impact on EV sales? The start of deliveries marks an important milestone in Ford's electrification strategy, and is taking place ahead of the start of production of the Ford F-150 Lightning later this spring. - The automaker offers the E-Transit in a variety of versions, including three wheelbases and three roof heights, as well as in cutaway and chassis cab forms, with a top estimated range of 126 miles. All versions of the van use a 68-kWh battery powering a single rear-mounted motor producing 266 hp and 317 lb-ft of torque. The model starts at $43,295 in cutaway form, prior to destination charges and the $7500 federal tax credit, while the lowest-priced cargo van starts at $47,185 before destination charges and incentives. - Stellantis is certainly building battery-electric work vans at the moment, but it's only offering them in Europe under Opel, Vauxhall and Citroen brands, and is not expected to offer a version of that particular vehicle family stateside. It's probably not for benchmarking the Mach-E against it, but perhaps Ford will compare some other future electric offerings to it. - These photos were sent to us by our spies without any context, so we had to try to explain what they show. It could just be a Lucid owner who knew someone at Ford brought their own personal Air just for Ford guys to take a look around the vehicle, but there's probably more to it than that. - We still think that either Ford or more likely Lincoln is working on a vehicle that's similar to the Air, otherwise it would have chosen another vehicle from a rival brand to compare against. Nissan has determined these rules will raise the cost of developing internal combustion engines to unsustainable levels. - As gasoline vehicles remain on the roads, Nissan will improve existing engine designs rather than develop new ones. Plants that produce engines will remain open, and no job cuts are planned at this stage, people familiar with the company's plans said. The condition, which affects select cars of the company's 2021 and 2022 model-year EVs, can result in diminished visibility, increasing the likelihood of a crash. - According to documents posted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's recall website, the issue stems from a software error that can open a heat-pump valve unintentionally. This condition can "trap the refrigerant inside the evaporator, resulting in decreased defrosting performance." That means the affected Tesla vehicles might not match the minimum performance requirement outlined in Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard rules. - Tesla developed the heat pump for 2020 model-year vehicles after owners of older models complained of poor cold-weather performance. FORD EARNINGS Q4 2021 | CNBC The automaker's fourth-quarter net income swung to a $12.3 billion profit from a $2.8 billion loss during the last three months of 2020. That included an $8.2 billion gain on its investment in electric vehicle start-up Rivian Automotive. After backing out that and other items, like taxes, Ford's adjusted earnings came to $2.0 billion for the fourth quarter. Ford owns about 12% of Rivian. The automaker said it expects to spend between $7 billion and $8 billion, up from $6.2 billion in 2021, as Ford executes CEO Jim Farley's Ford+ turnaround plan and accelerates its transition to electric vehicles. That includes launches of electric versions of the Transit cargo van and F-150 pickup. Ford had $36.5 billion in cash and investments to end last year, including $10.6 billion in its Rivian stake. However, that valuation is based on Rivian's stock at $103.69 per share. The stock closed Thursday at $60.36 a share. a second-quarter launch for the electric F-150 Lightning remains on track https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/03/ford-f-earnings-q4-2021.html FORD EARNINGS MISS EXPECTATION BUT EXECS BULLISH ON EV DEMAND | DETROIT NEWS "Financial performance is obviously critical," CEO Jim Farley said in a statement. “We're also proud that customers see how Ford is taking EVs mainstream, and have already ordered or reserved more than 275,000 all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUVs, F-150 Lightning pickups and E-Transit commercial vehicles — and we're breaking constraints to deliver every one of them as fast as we can.” Ford ended 2021 as the No. 2 seller of EVs in the U.S., behind market leader Tesla Inc., an achievement Farley described as “an important early step toward eventually being the true EV leader.” The company has said it aims to boost EV manufacturing capacity to at least 600,000 units by 2023 and it's targeting at least 40% of its lineup being fully electric by decade's end. “We really see the ICE (internal combustion engine) business as a strategic advantage as we go forward, and as we manage that and continue to improve that business and generate significant amounts of cash flow, we'll leverage that and invest in the growth business with our BEVs.” Farley noted the automaker's planned plant in Tennessee "will produce Ford's second generation of a full-size electric pickup in high volumes starting in 2025.""The velocity of change at Ford is increasing," he told analysts. "We're not seeking half-measures. Fear of change and risk has never served legacy automakers well in the past couple decades. We're done with incremental change. We have a clear plan, a bias for action and a whatever-it-takes mindset.” https://eu.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/ford/2022/02/03/ford-2021-earnings-miss-expectation-but-execs-bullish-ev-demand/6654980001/ AMAZON ADDS TO RIVIAN STAKE | MARKETWATCH Amazon.com Inc. The phenomenon, known as “phantom braking,” has been a persistent issue for Tesla vehicles. The automaker was forced to recall a version of its Full Self-Driving software in October over false positives to its automatic emergency-braking system that it said were triggered by the software update. Complaints soared after the recall and remain elevated, signaling continued owner concern. In addition to the safety recall in late October, the timing of the complaints coincides with a period in which Tesla has stopped using radar sensors in its vehicles to supplement the suite of cameras that perceive their surroundings. https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/02/02/tesla-phantom-braking/ TESLA RECALLS MORE THAN 817,000 CARS OVER FAULTY SEAT BELT CHIMES | TECHCRUNCH Tesla is once again grappling with large-scale software quality issues. The Associated Press reports Tesla has issued a recall for 817,143 cars over a flaw in seat belt chime functionality. All Model 3 and Model Y cars, as well as 2021 and newer Model S and Model X cars, have a “software error” that prevents the chime from sounding on startup if the chime was interrupted and the seat belt wasn't fastened. The automaker plans to fix the seat belt chime bug by releasing an over-the-air update sometime in early February. South Korean testers first discovered the problem on January 6th, and Tesla decided a recall was necessary on January 25th following an investigation. While this recall is relatively minor, its timing couldn't be much worse for Tesla. It comes just a few days after a recall for a Full Self Driving bug, and while the NHTSA is investigating a string of incidents where cars using Autopilot crashed into emergency vehicles. https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/03/tesla-recalls-more-than-817000-cars-over-faulty-seat-belt-chimes/ TESLA PLANS TO BUILD CATHODE BUILDING AT TEXAS GIGAFACTORY | REUTERS Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) on Wednesday applied for a permit to extend its existing Austin-based car factory with a building to produce cathodes for battery manufacturing, according to city filings and a spokeswoman. An application submitted on Wednesday for an Austin building permit under the program name "Cathode" listed the Colorado River Project LLC as a co-applicant. Net income this year is expected to be between $9.4 billion and $10.8 billion, also in line with its $10 billion profit in 2021, GM said. Barra said the company is not reinstating its dividend, which the automaker cut during the early days of the coronavirus pandemic in April 2020. She said the company plans to use the saved capital for accelerating, even increasing, its $35 billion in investments in electric and autonomous vehicles through 2025. “We are pulling ahead significant investment into the 2022-to-2025 time frame, and we will share more details as we further refine our plan,” Barra told analysts during a call Tuesday. the company will announce a third plant to produce battery-electric trucks in the foreseeable future as well as the location of a fourth production facility for battery cells with LG https://www.cnbc.com/2022/02/01/general-motors-gm-earnings-q4-2021.html 2021 FULL-YEAR AND Q4 LETTER TO SHAREHOLDERS Since 2020, we have announced investments totaling more than $14 billion in 10 sites across North America to increase our manufacturing capacity in the region to more than 1 million EVs annually by the end of 2025. The automaker is also mulling whether to spin off some of its EV business as a special acquisition company (SPAC) in order to attract more investment. Ford has previously stated that it would spend $30 billion on electric and autonomous vehicle development by 2025. Ford is reportedly putting former Apple and Tesla executive Doug Field in charge of the reorganization, which will include converting its factories from gas-powered to electric vehicle production and hiring more engineers. Ford recently announced that it was doubling production of its upcoming electric pickup truck, the F-150 Lightning, and tripling production for the Mustang Mach-E, with the expectation that it will reach over 200,000 units per year by 2023. Ford's electric delivery van, the E-Transit, also goes on sale early this year. The group tested chargers by Volkswagen's (VOWG_p.DE) Electrify America, ChargePoint (CHPT.N), EVgo (EVGO.O), Blink Charging (BLNK.O), EVconnect, Greenlots and Tesla's (TSLA.O) Superchargers across seven U.S. states in September. Electrify America reached the highest score in the ranking, followed by Tesla's Supercharger and ChargePoint, said umlaut, which was acquired by Accenture (ACN.N) in October. Good morning, good afternoon and good evening wherever you are in the world, welcome to EV News Daily for Monday 23rd August. It's Martyn Lee here and I go through every EV story so you don't have to. Thank you to MYEV.com for helping make this show, they've built the first marketplace specifically for Electric Vehicles. It's a totally free marketplace that simplifies the buying and selling process, and help you learn about EVs along the way too. GM IDLES BOLT EV PLANT FOR LACK OF CHIPS - Operations at the General Motors assembly plant in Orion Township, Michigan ground to a halt today and will remained idled until at least Aug. 30. - The factory produces GM's two battery-electric vehicles, the Bolt EV and EUV. It's the first time the facility has been shutdown since the semiconductor shortage began. - Virtually every automaker has been impacted by the chip crisis … and few models have escaped without production cuts. But analysts note battery-electric vehicles could be particularly vulnerable going forward. - Silicon chip suppliers were only too happy to provide consumer electronics manufacturers with what they needed because the auto industry slashed semiconductor orders when the pandemic struck. When the massive plunge in car sales didn't last as long as predicted automakers tried to increase their orders, but they had to go to the back of the line and wait. This challenging process involves multiple build phases – many of the vehicles from these non-customer build phases have been seen out testing across a range of environments during the last year. These validation, tooling tryout and pilot build vehicles are critical for our ongoing mileage accumulation program that has helped us drive refinements to the product. With all of this, I am excited to report we have started producing vehicles that reflect all of our quality iterations and design refinements. We are currently working with various governing agencies on the final approvals needed for us to make the first deliveries to preorder customers in September”. GM is trying to get LG to pay for a fix, as Bloomberg explains: - Four years later, the long-distance relationship between GM and its battery partner, LG Energy Solution, is being tested like never before. At issue: who will pick up a roughly $1 billion tab.GM last week recalled Bolt EVs for the third time in nine months because of risk their batteries could catch fire. The Detroit-based company will replace modules in more than 73,000 additional vehicles and said it's trying to get LG to pay for the fix. LG, headquartered some 6,600 miles away in Seoul, said the expense will be divvied up depending on the results from a joint investigation into the root cause of the problem. That's enough for 500 battery packs a day (there are 10 modules in a pack). - 500 battery packs a day across 350 days a year (leaving 15 days of break due to various factors that can stop production for a while) would mean enough battery packs for 175,000 Mustang Mach-Es a year! - It's possible that battery production could be planned in spurts over the long term. Battery production could be getting ahead of vehicle production for a while due to potential disruptions later in the year or in 2022. TESLA TAPS TINY STARTUP’S TECH TO BUILD CHEAPER, CLEANER BATTERIES - Two weeks before Battery Day, Tesla purchased a number of patent applications from Springpower International, a small company based just outside Toronto, for a grand total of $3, according to public records. - Buying the patent application means that when the patent itself was finally granted in January, it was issued to Tesla, with no mention of Springpower. - Manufacturing cathodes for electric vehicle batteries traditionally generates large quantities of contaminated water — up to 4,000 gallons containing ammonia, metal particles and toxic chemicals for every ton of cathode material produced. Springpower’s process cleverly recirculates the chemical solution, removing the need for expensive water treatment. Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/XZtxS/ Original Source : https://techcrunch.com/2021/05/04/tesla-taps-tiny-startups-tech-to-build-cheaper-cleaner-batteries/ TESLA USES SPRINGPOWER INTERNATIONAL TECH - Thus, the purchase of patents, the description of Springpower technologies for the production of Tesla 4680 batteries, and several other factors indicate that the two companies have close cooperation, and perhaps hint at something more, such as an acquisition. For example, Springpower CEO Michael Wang has consistently interacted with posts by Tesla employees on LinkedIn, which may hint at a close and warm relationship. - it is likely that Tesla has acquired a tiny startup whose technology was considered by others to be too far from commercialization. The symbiosis between Springpower and the largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the world will definitely bear very juicy fruit in the form of critical savings in battery production. Seven months after the car first went on sale. - it came to MG’s attention that key testing had not been done and therefore it could not confirm how much load can be carried on the car’s roof. - The latest development is that the roof capacity should soon be confirmed as 35kg, once final signoff has been received from the UK vehicle standards body, the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), following a long series of tests. - MG told us a validation testing procedure was missed due to human error, and the company has since amended its processes to prevent it recurring. Similarly, the original stated capacity of 50kg was also a result of human error. That explains why US sales are trailing off a bit. Ford still has only so much production capacity, and it is starting to spread it more widely. With a usable battery capacity of 67 kilowatt-hours4, the low-roof E-Transit cargo van has a targeted driving range of 126 miles3. - Pro Power Onboard turns E-Transit into a mobile generator with up to 2.4 kilowatts of available power Highlighted Source : https://share.getliner.com/0qV5S/ Original Source : https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2021/05/04/ford-opens-e-transit-registration-site.html TESLA OFFERS PEDESTRIAN WARNING SYSTEM IN SELECT OLDER MODELS - Tesla has reportedly begun making available pedestrian warning system speaker retrofits for select Model 3s, after the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) deemed them necessary back in 2019 - Pedestrian warning system speaker retrofits were being made available for certain Model 3s made after July 5 2019 through September 9 2020, and Model Ys built before August 14 2020. - Tesla had included the wiring harness but not the speaker – whereas all Model 3s built after September 2020 have the speaker already installed. - the retrofit also “allows for use of the new Boombox feature in V10 as well.” Tesla’s Boombox feature was added with the Version 10 software and allows owners to play sounds audibly for those outside the vehicle to hear. While little-known as a name outside its industry, it supplies many of the world's major electric-car brands. Known in short as CATL, the company makes batteries for Tesla (TSLA) vehicles at the carmaker's new factory in Shanghai, as well as supplying BMW (BMWYY), Volkswagen (VLKAF) , Toyota Motor (TM) , Honda Motor (HMC) and the Chinese owner of the Volvo and Lotus brands, Geely Automobile Holding (GELYF) . - Zeng owns around 25% of CATL, so his fortune has risen as fast as the battery maker's shares, tripling since early 2020. By Forbes calculations, there are 9 billionaires on their rich list that owe their wealth to their holdings in CATL. By comparison, there are eight Facebook billionaires, eight Alphabet (GOOGL) billionaires and eight Walmart billionaires.
