Ramsey Pryor is the founding partner at Port of Entry Partners, a global expansion consultancy. He's a founding member of the International Mastermind operator network and he hosts the International Expansion podcast. Prior to starting Port of Entry, Ramsey led International Expansion and Sales at Branch Metrics for 5 years, building the company's international presence and revenue in London, Berlin, Brazil, Bangalore, Singapore, Seoul, Tokyo, Beijing, and Sydney. The branch is currently the third Fastest-Growing Company in North America on Deloitte's 2020 Technology Fast 500 list. Prior to Branch, Ramsey has held various leadership roles in Product Management, Marketing, and Business Development at companies including IBM, Outblaze, and Register.com. He started his career as a consultant at Accenture and holds an MBA from IESE Business School in Barcelona and a BA in Economics from Northwestern University. KEY TAKEAWAYS Markets are a very important part when it comes to global business. As we all know, one single market isn't enough for the potential that many companies have; instead, they become international from day 1 and there's no need in forgetting about submarkets either! Submarket planning needs different considerations than just focusing on your main markets or even more specifically what you're doing with them - because each country/region will want something slightly different depending upon where people live, e.g. ease of access vs quality. While researching a market, there are three best sources of information: peer companies, investors, and contractors/ambassadors in that market. BEST MOMENTS “The common mistakes that I see people making these days and having lived in had this be my job is really about planning and staying ahead of it instead of kind of going opportunistically or being in a little bit behind where you need to be. I see with the companies that I work with today a lot of times you can expand internationally without really intending to if you have a mobile app or business in that category. You can literally just click a button when you publish your app and be present in hundreds of countries.” “Most of the companies that I talk to are based in the US or found in the US and I think that even with such a large domestic market, the expectation is that if you're going to have aspirations to be a unicorn, you are not going to do that in one single market or just in the Americas. You need to be in Asia, you need to be in Europe and Latin America, and other regions in order to really maximize your global potential.” “In terms of international expansion, I see that companies going internationally sooner. I see a lot more companies being remote-first because we all had to be but I see a lot of companies being open to staying that way and organizing themselves much more in the decentralized manner and also talent is a lot harder to come by and I see companies opening their minds to hiring talent wherever they can find it. They are not so focused on finding people may be around where their offices located or living in the country.” “The very best source of information out there, my experience, is finding your peer, at a company that similar to yours has already gone into that market.” ABOUT THE HOST Levent Yildizgoren, the author of 'Good Business in any Language', is an award-winning entrepreneur, localisation professional, and a PRINCE2 qualified project manager. So much of learning how to drive meaningful growth is finding unsaturated and ripe growth channels and relentless focus on the actual end-user. This is our next guest's philosophy, Dharmesh Gandhi, the Senior Vice President and Head of Product at RentoMojo. Dharmesh shares how early in his career at Amazon, he learned how you could easily spot what seems like a popular growth option and not always get the return you’re looking for, especially when scaling. He adjusted his approach to play the long game and focus on important but not urgent growth methods. As he says in the interview, once something becomes urgent, it’s too late. He built out a multi-year roadmap that would allow continued growth through different channels. That experience also helped him when RentoMojo had to make dramatic shifts when COVID happened. They decided to implement a subscription pause, which reduced churn by 35% and played a significant role in helping the business continue to thrive even during the lockdown. We surely have seen a lot of folks who get caught up with fancy job titles and then there are others who do not care about what their title says - they just love what they do. There is merit to having a title but when do you recognize that your job title isn’t fulfilling enough? What criteria you pick to may be “step down a level from your current role” and still stay happy in your next role? Is it alright for an individual to move from a VP to may be a Director Role to even just a manager role? Does it affect their future prospects? On this episode I spoke to Zeesha who had a very interesting journey from a VP at Evernote to a Director at Branch Metrics and then to Senior Manager at LinkedIn.

Derek sat down with 3 of the best community builders in the world to talk about how they built their communities. The guests were Elizabeth Kinsey (Developer Marketing Manager at Slack), Leslie Lee (Senior Director, Customer Engagement at Atlassian) and Erica Kuhl (VP of Community at Salesforce). They talked about how they got started and got the initial buy-in to create the program, what strategy they used to gain traction and get people to their events and how they were able to measure their success for themselves and to prove value to the C-Suite. Here are some of the top tidbits from each of our guests.   Elizabeth Kinsey (Developer Marketing Manager at Slack) (starts at 15:21) Not only did Elizabeth build community with the people attending her events at Branch Metrics but also she did that with the panelists who spoke. She focused on the speakers being extremely knowledgeable in the space to provide a lot of value and being very diverse to show the attendees that the community was like them. That went a long way in both building the brand and setting the expectation that the events would always provide value and that they really cared about showing that anyone no matter their background could attend the events.   Leslie Lee (Senior Director, Customer Engagement at Atlassian) (start at 12:24) Atlassian is invested in getting feedback from their users and get NPS (net promoter scores) from their users, knowing this Leslie and her team measured NPS on customers who attended community events and didn't. They found strong correlation with that showed NPS was higher when customers attended community events.   Erica Kuhl (VP of Community at Salesforce) (starts at 10:30) Instead of assuming what the community what Erica asked the community “What do you want?”. The answer she got was that they wanted to get connected to each other and get connected and become apart of the brand. The ability to put Salesforce on Linkedin, featuring them at their Dreamforce conference was extremely meaningful and motivating for them.   (starts at 18:18) Erica knew that the future of community would be data-driven so she decided to attach the community metrics with the top 4 business metrics that Salesforce had which were: Pipeline, ACV (Average Contract Value), Adoption and Attrition. By doing that she was able to prove that the already beloved community was irreplaceable to the business.

If that was not enough, Zach is also a Senior Advisor to McKinsey & Co. In Today’s Episode You Will Learn: 1.) How Zach made his way from the world of operating and adtech to investing and advising startups today? When does Zach feel the ecosystem really started to take him seriously as an investor? What did Zach learn from being in the adtech space that he has applied to his investing today? 2.) The Future of Venture: Naval has previously said we will see "the unbundling of VC", does Zach agree with this view? Why does Zach feel we are seeing both the bundling and the unbundling of venture platforms? What unique challenges does this pose for both sides of the equation? How should entrepreneurs evaluate the different options, bundled vs unbundled? 3.) Portfolio Construction: Why does Zach believe that portfolio construction is fundamentally inefficient? What 2 core areas of venture does portfolio construction cause issues for? When does Zach view to be the ideal insertion point if optimising for absolute returns and not following portfolio construction? 4.) Reserve Allocation and Pricing: Why does Zach think that the current mechanism for reserve allocation is broken? Why is it a fundamentally bias process? What does the optimal investment decision-making process look like to Zach? How does Zach think about the asymmetric information that is gained from being early into a company? How can investors really use it to their advantage? Why do they not? 5.) Why does Zach compare being an entrepreneur to being a gladiator and a rocketship? Why does Alex believe the transition from space articulation to product articulation is the most important thing an entrepreneur can do? What is the true sign of this transition in customer interactions? Where do many entrepreneurs make mistakes here? Adam Michalski is focused on Partner Growth at Branch Metrics, a deep linking platform for mobile apps. Adam is an incredible entrepreneur based out of New York. After studying finance, Adam began a career in banking and started working with larger corporate clients. Through this experience, he began to understand business operations and financing. He then started to immerse himself in the local startup scene and taught himself more about tech startups. He launched a side project called DormChat. After growing it to 15 campuses and raising a seed round, Adam went in full time. One year later, he realized there was too much competition and made the difficult decision to shut it down. But mobile and startups were still a passion for Adam and he found his way onto the GoButler team as they had just closed a massive Series A round and were setting up operations in the US, where he became the Director of Business Development and Operations. Following his time with GoButler, Adam came across the opportunity to join the team at Branch Metrics in setting up an East Coast office in NY and help them continue to work with some of the biggest mobile companies out there. Adam joins us to explore the rapidly changing world of mobile, why messaging & bots were hot even years ago, and how the web & mobile are still evolving so quickly. Adam joins us to share his story, how he got into startups, what it was like launching and growing DormChat to seed stage, what he learned from joining and growing operations at GoButler through their Series A stage, what he’s now doing at Branch Metrics through Partner Growth and the launch of an East Coast office, why he’s so passionate about mobile, and much more!
