In January 2023, a TV show called In the Know debuted on Peacock. The comedy is a parody of a daily NPR show produced in New York City, with rather cringey characters portrayed by stop-motion puppets. Each episode also features an interview with a real person who appears on Zoom. The show is written by Zach Woods, Brandon Gardner, and Mike Judge, creator of Beavis and Butthead (who also voices the character of Sandy the movie critic). Woods, known for playing Gabe on The Office and Jared from Silicon Valley, plays the central role of Lauren Caspian, billed as the third most famous NPR host. Brooke speaks with Zach Woods and Brandon Gardner about why public radio provides such rich ground for satire, and how comedy can restore complexity to the world. This interview originally aired on our January 26, 2024 show. On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Support OTM by donating today (https://pledge.wnyc.org/support/otm). Zach Woods got his start at the Upright Citizens Brigade doing improv. Brandon Gardner followed a similar path, eventually shifting to playwriting and sketch. The two continued to share work and support one another as they moved from New York to Los Angeles. For their latest collaboration, In the Know, where they're listed as co-creators with Mike Judge (Office Space, Silicon Valley), the story follows Lauren Caspian, the third most popular host of an NPR-like interview series, who happens to be a stop motion puppet. As improv veterans with similar taste, the collaborative writing process somewhat follows the classic “yes, and” structure. “I think it's easy for me to think where it can go positively before I'm critical,” says Gardner. “It's not a partnership where I'm nervous to have an idea.” The casual and polite interaction can go one of two ways: “I'm very trusting of his taste. Do you like this? If he says ‘yes,' I'm 100 percent confident in the idea. If he says ‘I'm not sure,' then I'm also confident in knowing there's another way.” The writers describe the UCB approach to improv as “playing everything to the top of your intelligence,” continues Gardner. “Why is the character doing that? It's not to be funny. To them, it makes sense, so how do you treat the character respectfully?” (Paul Rust made a similar point in the interview for Love). Woods adds, “Even if I have an idea that doesn't feel right, if we have divergent impulses, neither of us wants to win. We want to figure out where those impulses intersect. We take each other's reservations and confidence very seriously.” Want more? Steal my first book, Ink by the Barrel - Secrets From Prolific Writers right now for free. IGSTS Episode #16I got somethang ta say That justice is a blind goddessIs a thing to which we poor are wiseHer bandage hides two festering soresThat once, perhaps, were eyesThe Great Langston HughesDaunte Wright's murder. Was it a careless mistake or something more sinister? SAF Moe ur Prison Lawyer and Ron B in the Middle discuss the facts from their perspectives. Moreover, the hosts of I got somethang ta say, try to make sense of a verdict, that makes no sense. Under the current system of law enforcement, if a police officer is in the process of apprehending an individual for some alleged offense, that person has no right to resist. Even if the officer is in the wrong. That individual cannot use deadly force against the aggressor, however, it can and will be used against that individual. As most Americans are not overt victims of overseeing and control, a problem only faced by the most downtrodden, critical subjects such as the Potter verdict, over-policing, and hyper-minority incarceration may seem overly sensationalized, notwithstanding, as for African Americans who deal with it on a day-to-day basis, it is only the system reaffirming its grasp around their proverbial throats. The subject of unarmed men and women of color being murdered is a very sensitive topic; moreover, faced with the fact that law enforcement has been used as a tool to remove all human dignity from certain persons for the purpose of control, this conversation must be had, this space must be free and open until no person is killed simply for being unapologetically different in America!Justin Terrell (Executive Director) Minnesota Justice Research Center is our special guest and speaks truth to power. Mr. Terrell is a lifelong advocate for justice and he discusses politics in Minnesota and felons' disenfranchisement in the political process.Note:In Tennessee v. Garner (1985), thus. Supreme Court reframed such actions by police to fall under the Fourth Amendment. The Court commented that "Whenever an officer restrains the freedom of a person to walk away, he has seized that person . . . there can be no question that application of deadly force is a seizure subject to the reasonableness requirement of the Fourth Amendment." This case essentially abolished the over-broad use of the "fleeing felon" doctrine by striking down the use of "all necessary means" to apprehend fleeing suspects. We get into it. The appeal of Allen's comedy and his movies, and the trouble of separating what you feel about someone's art versus what you feel about the artist.
