Even if they want to go solar, most middle-income Americans can't afford it. Or maybe they rent or move frequently and can't take rooftop solar with them when they go.And those who live in areas with frequent natural disasters worry about the cost of replacing solar panels that get damaged or destroyed. But what if solar energy was both inexpensive and portable? What if you could fold up your system and either store it safely or take it with you during a hurricane or wildfire?Antonia Ginsberg-Klemmt is Cofounder and President of GismoPower, a company building portable solar carports for lower- and moderate-income prosumers. Antonia is a 23-year-old physics and environmental studies major at New College of Florida and OZY Genius award winner. And her startup's first product, the mobile electricity-generating appliance or MEGA, won the 2022 American-Made Solar Prize and is an SBIR grant recipient. On this episode of Clean Power Hour, Antonia joins Tim to discuss GismoPower's mission to make solar mobile and more accessible to the general public, describing how the MEGA folds into a box that can be stored in your garage.Antonia explains GismoPower's partnership with Maxout Renewables, exploring how their Evergrid powers the MEGA in emergency situations—without a battery.Listen in for insight around the permitting process for MEGA users and find out where to go to see a working prototype of Antonia's innovative mobile solar carport.Key TakeawaysHow Antonia and her dad got the idea for a portable solar carport during the pandemicGismoPower's mission to make solar mobile and more accessible to the general publicSome of the awards Antonia has won for the MEGA (mobile electricity-generating appliance)How the Evergrid powers the MEGA in emergency situations without a batteryThe challenges of securing permitting for the MEGA from local governments and utilitiesHow the MEGA plugs into a 240-volt outlet and is being UL certified as an applianceHow the MEGA folds into a box and can be stored in a garage in high-wind eventsThe MEGA's 1,000-pound weight and why it comes with optional ground mounts The idea Antonia is developing for a mobile solar system that powers music festivalsHow bifacial solar panels increase the efficiency of GismoPower's portable carport by 10%Where to go to see GismoPower's working prototypes of its mobile solar carportConnect with Antonia GismoPowerAntonia on YouTubeConnect with Tim Clean Power Hour Clean Power Hour on YouTubeTim on TwitterTim on LinkedIn Email tgmontague@gmail.com Review Clean Power Hour on Apple PodcastsResources American-Made Solar PrizeOZY Genius AwardsSBIR GrantsVentureWellMaxout RenewablesCorporate sponsors who share our mission to speed the energy transition are invited to check out https://www.cleanpowerhour.com/support/ Twice a week we highlight the tools, technologies and innovators that are making the clean energy transition a reality - on Apple,

This week's episode is all about Tamara's Copenhagen adventures and Rheannon's success in getting winterized, and that includes the carport. Luckily Tamara has not gotten lost on the public transit, but that is largely due to her friend picking her up from the airport and navigating all public transit. Rheannon had a very productive weekend completing part one of the carport. Which is one step closer to being ready for winterization, which is good timing since it has already snowed once. There also was an afternoon where Rheannon moved six tons of pallets. Tamara enjoyed smooth travel, and the pleasant surprise of seeing the northern lights on her flight. Travel has gone smooth so far, but there was a little confusion as Tamara was trying to pay money and convert different currency exchanges in her head. Either Tamara is going to figure it out, or it is going to go downhill fast.

Today’s guest on the “Phil with F30” podcast is Parveen Begum – CEO of Solisco Forbes List: Europe Year: 2020 Category: Manufacturing and Industry Protecting the environment is at the forefront of Parveen Begum’s work and the inspiration for starting Solisco. How she started the company and created portable solar car charging stations is just part of her story. My admiration for Parveen comes from her courage and strength to follow the beat of her own drum in all her career decisions. Although education was important to her, she took a leap and left law school to run a retail fashion division. When she wanted a bigger challenge, she applied and survived the Electric Vehicle (EV) Tesla interview process. It was the car company’s early entry into the EV world and the UK market. Parveen started Solisco in 2016, and just two years later, the company won the UK’s Global Clean Energy’s most innovative EV power tech award. The company also won the UK’s Office for Low Emission Vehicles and Innovate UK competition. When COVID-19 hit, Parveen was left stranded in St. Lucia. Island life has given her time to reflect, especially how the planet’s health has changed for the better. It encourages Parveen to continue to bring her visions, ideas, and knowledge to contribute towards a sustainable planet. I know you’ll be inspired by Parveen’s unique journey. Enjoy the show! The Government has scrapped some red-tape for DIYers after ruling people no longer need consent for a variety of small projects around the home.Minister for Building and Construction Jenny Salesa today announced the scrapping of "low risk building work", which includes sleep-outs, sheds, greenhouses, carports, awnings and water storage bladders, which will save Kiwis up to $18 million a year. However, Salesa added that the work must still meet the Building Code. The announcement has the support of the NZ Construction Industry Council who say axing red-tape was good as long as it didn't compromise the quality of the work.Salesa hoped the change would allow the construction sector to fire back up quicker on larger projects to provide jobs and assist the country's recovery from Covid-19."These changes will save New Zealanders time and money and mean councils can focus on higher-risk building work, boosting the building and construction sector in the Covid-19 recovery," Jenny Salesa said."Some of the new exemptions will utilise the Licensed Builder Practitioners scheme, which recognises the competence of these practitioners and allows them to join chartered professional engineers and certifying plumbers in having their own suite of exemptions. The changes mean those looking to do building work that was exempt wouldn't have to apply or pay for a building consent to do the work. There wouldn't be regular council inspections on work progress, and, overall, there would be less red tape to navigate."These exemptions are just one part of my broader building system reform programme, which includes Construction Sector Accord Transformation Plan, the Construction Skills Action Plan, and Building Law reforms," Salesa said. Most of the new exemptions are expected to commence at the end of August, after the necessary changes to the Building Act have been made.Graham Burke, chair of the NZCIC said it was good news."On the surface of it it seems like a good idea."The important thing is that there's no intention to drop standards, that work that needs to be completed by a licensed building practitioner or registered electrician still remains and any work that requires a consulting engineer still has to be designed by a consulting engineer."It just takes away that compliance side of it, so we are definitely in favour of dropping compliance but we're not in favour of dropping standards. If we can do one without the other then it's a good thing."He said the residential building sector was going to face a few issues in light of Covid-19 this year with the downturn of consumer confidence so anything that helped get it going with fewer costs was positive."The main thing here is that they're not saying it's open slather, go out and build anything up to 40sqm or 30sqm, it's saying that you don't necessarily have to go and get a permit for that."THE CHANGESBuilding work exempted under the package includes:• Single-storey detached buildings up to 30sq m;• Carports with a maximum floor area of 40sq m;• Awnings with a maximum size of 30sq m;• Verandas and porches with a maximum size of 30sq m;• Outdoor fireplaces or ovens;• Flexible water storage bladders for irrigation and firefighting only, up to 200,000 litres in storage capacity;• Short-span bridges on private land without public access;• Pipe supporting structures;• Ground-mounted solar array panels in rural zones and outside rural zones;• Detached single-storey pole sheds and hay barns.

Attached is an outline we used for a quick winter operations class at work. I ran across this the other day and thought it would be appropriate to post now. The podcast is here for this topic as well. Feel free to add and use this as you see fit. If you have some great tips on operating in the winter, please share with everybody, as I'm sure we missed something that could be very useful. Water Supply-- Frozen Hydrants/Snowed In--make sure we have a shovel and insure that booster tank is full in case there is a delay in obtaining water supply. Can thaw frozen FDC and hydrant connections with road flares or torches Monitor ice forming from leaking water and carry salt for slippery surfaces Identify alternate hydrant locations in the event that the closest hydrant is unable to be used. Apparatus Considerations Use Jake Break/Exhaust breaks appropriately for the weather Keep in mind the restrictions of chains, on the ambulance, speed limits, etc. Keep salt and or ice melt on the truck for slippery surfaces and for truck tires We are draining pumps Use recirculating valve when sitting on scene Hose Lines Let nozzles bleed water when not in use during freezing temps Try to direct draining water away and off of walking and driving surfaces Hose may need to be taken back to house to thaw before repacking Blow out hose reels Ladder Truck Operations Be aware of snow banks and ices conditions when setting outriggers. Cannot short jack the side your working off of. Think about ice and the possibility of the truck sliding if on grade and in use Increasing ice load onto building and ground surfaces from water flow Ground Ladder Use Rungs may become slick, three points of contact Roof surfaces will be slick and dangerous. Guttering may be ice covering causing the ladder to slide laterally. Lock in and use harnesses or ladder belts when working off of Ground surfaces may be snow packed or ice covered making butting the ladder difficult and important. Getting proper working angle may be a challenge Service Calls Ice and snow can cause electrical lines to break and come down. Be aware of surroundings. Trees may break causing the downed line. No electric may mean no heat for vulnerable patients. Unapproved alternative heating methods may be used causing fires and CO emergencies. Broken water mains may cause water supply issues during a fire. Be familiar with relay pumping and make sure your booster tank is full. Chimney Fires Consider best roof access, ice, snow, roof height and slope Be aware of the condition of the chimney, use caution when working around the chimney, they can fail. Be sure to check attic spaces and concealed spaces between floors for extension. The fire box should be emptied to eliminate further heat and fire. Avoid water in the chimney, it will crack the flue liner. If dropping dry-chem bags or other extinguishing agents from the top, close fire box doors first. Winter Loads Be aware of the loads being placed on a building by ice and snow. The weight coupled by fire attacking the structural members and the fire flow will increase likelihood of collapse and the collapse will happened faster. Carports and large open span buildings are especially susceptible to collapse Ice hanging off of structures can break loose and injure a firefighter. Monitor conditions above us in regards to falling ice and snow sheets off of buildings.
