Tickets for Bellator 286 at the Long Beach Convention Center are still available and can be purchased on Ticketmaster. Article Written by JJ Fiddler of The 562:No matter how you look at it, A.J. McKee's Bellator Mixed Martial Arts fight in Long Beach this weekend is the first page of a new chapter in his life. The Long Beach native is coming off of his first professional loss and is fighting in a new weight class for the first time in his career, but McKee said he knows something special is going to happen in the Long Beach Arena on Saturday night when he fights Spike Carlyle.“Having everybody there in my hometown is going to be insane,” McKee told the Long Beach Post's Jackie Rae in an interview for The Word podcast. “The amount of energy that was in (The Forum in Inglewood when I won the featherweight title) was phenomenal so I think it's going to be ten times more electrifying (in Long Beach).”McKee, 27, went to Poly High School where he was an All-League and CIF wrestler. Even though he was already training as an MMA fighter while at Poly, McKee embraced the community and used others' advancement to motivate himself.“It's a city of opportunities.” McKee said. “You can come from nothing and make your life the most extraordinary thing. If you're willing to put in the work it can be done. It's phenomenal to see people you know who struggled to be able to make it out because they visualized a better lifestyle for themselves.”The reason McKee was working on his MMA skills at such a young age is because his father, Antonio McKee, is a former MMA fighter himself. The McKee family worked out of Body Shop Fitness in Lakewood while McKee went 7-1 as an amateur. He also was a member of the CCCAA State Championship wrestling team at Cerritos College.McKee joined Bellator in 2015 and won his debut fight against Marcos Bonilla via rear-naked choke submission in the first round, which really sent a message to the rest of the MMA world that he was ready to take the main stage. While setting the Bellator record with 18 consecutive victories to start his professional career, McKee made a name for himself by winning the Bellator Featherweight World Grand Prix in 2019. The championship fight for the title worth $1 million dollars was a shocker for most fans as McKee landed a high kick early and used a guillotine choke for the first-round win. The rematch with his finals opponent, Patrício Pitbull, was a unanimous decision for Pitbull after an entertaining bout. It was the first loss of McKee's career, and he didn't take it well. Instead of fighting Pitbull again, like he wants to, McKee is moving up from featherweight to 155-pound lightweight. “The transition should be easy for me,” McKee said. “Faster, stronger, bigger and better is my motto for this fight. I have the reach. It's just about making a few minor adjustments. I don't think strength is going to be an issue in this fight.” This fight with Carlyle is also a new chapter because it comes after McKee suffered a “full mental breakdown” following the loss to Pitbull. “I went through a mental depression and I kind of went through it on my own,” McKee said. “I was cooped up in the house, just going to the gym and going home. It was a mental check, and it's a bounce back to use that as motivation.” McKee added that talking about the issue has made it easier to deal with, even though it's not natural for him. “I'm kind of an introvert, but I'm comfortable with it now,” he said. “Even as vulnerable as I am speaking about it, I'm okay sharing that with other people.” Bellator 286 is Saturday at the Long Beach Arena and it will be headlined by Pitbull vs. Adam Borics. The prelim fights start at 7 p.m. and the main card featuring the McKee fight is scheduled for 10 p.m.

Marxism is having a moment; higher workloads, stagnating wages, rising costs of living, a new economic crisis every few years, a warming climate and now almost two years of a worldwide pandemic have all led to a number of people across the world, especially younger people, to self-identify with ideas once thought to be in the dustbin of history. But while people may find Marx's theories helpful for understanding what's happening, turning these interpretations into sustained commitments is another thing. What's more, Marx's works often turn out to be less definitive than is often imagined, giving us rigorous methods of inquiry that we then need to develop and adapt to other fields. Being a Marxist then is not simply about adopting a particular series of propositions, but a way of interpreting and engaging with the world. This is one of the animating ideas for my guest today, Ted Stolze, here to discuss his essay collection Becoming Marxist: Studies in Philosophy, Struggle, and Endurance (Haymarket Books, 2020). While Marx occupies a central place throughout the essays, readers will find engagements with a variety of figures, going back as far as Aristotle or the Apostle Paul, all the way up to the present with essays on Zizek and Deleuze. In between these poles are studies of Hobbes, Spinoza, Hegel and many other early modern thinkers. Throughout the essays, Stolze puts Marxist practice in dialogue with philosophy and vice-versa, showing us how political struggle demands philosophical inquiry, not simply for the purpose of political and tactical clarity, but for the same reasons people have turned to philosophy for several millennia now. Socrates famously said the unexamined life is not worth living, kicking off an entire tradition of self-examination. It's this tradition Stolze believes activists and organizers ought to draw on today to better understand what it might mean to become Marxist. Published as part of the Historical Materialism book series. Ted Stolze holds an M.A. in religion and a PhD in philosophy. He is an associate professor of philosophy at Cerritos College. He is the coeditor of The New Spinoza and has published numerous articles on philosophy, politics and religion. Learn more about your ad choices. Page often caused trouble in school, getting into fights and being placed in special education classes for his behavior-disorder. In his sophomore year at West Mesa High School, Page began wrestling and would go on to be a state champion before earning a scholarship to compete for Fresno State University. However, one night three months into his first semester at Fresno State, Page was attacked by eight gang members who left him severely hurt and barely conscious. Because of the incident and transgressions in the past, Page was kicked off of the wrestling team and subsequently lost his scholarship. After the incident, Page found Jackson's Submission Fighting and also continued collegiate wrestling for Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. At Cerritos, Page was a junior college All-American, finishing third in the state during his freshman year and became a state champion in his sophomore year.[1][2][3][4][5] Mixed martial arts career Early career Page made his professional mixed martial arts debut on February 5, 2005 for the King of the Cage organization. He disposed of his opponent, Will Tolliver, in the first round of their bout with strikes. After claiming victory in his next two bouts, Page fought and defeated Scott Johnson for the WEF Super Lightweight Championship. An impressive victory over Stephane Vigneault followed, before Page suffered his first professional defeat. The loss came in his Pancrase debut where he was handled by Japanese fighter, Miki Shida. Page closed out 2006 with four more fights, winning the first two by TKO but losing the final two by submission to Danny Batten in September and then UFC veteran and Japanese superstar, Genki Sudo on New Year's Eve in K-1. Fighting just the once in 2007, Page knocked out Rod Montoya at an Extreme Challenge event to improve his record to 6-3.

When Fresno City College finished up the 2016 California Community College Championships this past weekend, they looked back and saw Cerritos College five points behind. Last month, Cerritos capped an unbeaten league season with a win over Fresno City for the state dual championship, but Fresno City and coach Paul Keysaw would ultimately prevail and win the school's 14th state title. On Episode 298 of the Short Time Wrestling Podcast, Keysaw, a 1991 NCAA champion at CSU Bakersfield, will talk about the run through the tournament, including a tournament-shifting 5-1 round in the semifinals that enabled the Rams to claim the team title in the closest race since Cerritos edged Fresno City by eight points in 2014. It was Keysaw's sixth title at Fresno City and ninth overall. He won three titles at Moorpark prior to landing in Fresno. We'll talk his roots, his battles with Randy Couture and what he loves about coaching. The Short Time Time Wrestling Podcast is proudly supported by Compound Clothing.
