A processing facility has reached a nearly $1 million settlement with neighbors who filed a class-action lawsuit to formally complain about the smells and noises coming from the factory.Prestige Feed Products, which opened in Mount Prospect, Illinois in 2019, uses a process that involves dehydrating raw cheese and soy to make ingredients for animal feed, according to the Daily Herald. One of the company's products is known as “Cheese Supreme,” which doesn't sound so bad if you're talking about a pizza, but much less appetizing when it's livestock fodder.Nearby residents, businesses and schools said Prestige emitted a “burned cheese” smell, which one plaintiff said made it nearly impossible to enjoy walks, sitting outside or having the windows open. Neighbors also said the facility's loud industrial fans made it difficult to sleep at night. After hundreds of complaints since 2021, Prestige finally settled with nearby municipalities and shut down last year. And now it has reached a deal with local residents. But the company is still facing a separate lawsuit from the state of Illinois and that one could go to trial.Mary Beth Stillmaker, a plaintiff in the class-action suit, told the publication, “The main thing is that they're gone. A lot of us believe that if we didn't file this class-action lawsuit, they would still be operating and we would all still be suffering.”Prestige Feed Products was incorporated in 2018 and is based in the Northwest Suburbs of Chicago. The company said it makes products for the swine, cattle and pet food markets. It currently carries a two-star rating on Google Reviews, with many reviews saying the company is “evil and detestable” and the facility “smells like dog crap.”#Manufacturing #FoodProcessing #FactoryNews #IndustrialNews #ManufacturingNow #CheeseSupreme #Illinois #AnimalFeed #FactoryShutdown #ClassAction #IndustrialOdor #SupplyChain #ProcessingPlant #BusinessNews #IndustryNews #FoodManufacturing #PlantClosure #IndustrialOperations #FactoryLife #ManufacturingIndustry

While the settlement, pending final court approval, doesn't fully resolve the issue, it's seen as progress by the National Farmers Union. Deere also agreed to provide digital repair tools for a deca

Judge Brian Jackson of the U.S. District Court has certified a class action lawsuit against Angola Prison on behalf of men forced to perform punitive farm labor under unconstitutional conditions and in violation of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Under this ruling, the court certified two specific groups: a primary class encompassing all persons currently or potentially assigned to the Louisiana State Penitentiary (LSP) Farm Line, and a specialized subclass for those with disabilities assigned to the same labor. In his findings, Judge Jackson noted that nearly every individual arriving at the facility is assigned to the Farm Line upon entry, with the majority remaining at risk of reassignment as a disciplinary measure.Guest:Samantha Pourciau is a Senior Staff Attorney at The Promise of Justice Initiative based out of New Orleans, Louisiana.Credits:Host: Mansa MusaProducer / Videographer / Post-Production: Cameron Granadino Resource links:https://promiseofjustice.org/news/incarcerated-farm-line-workers-win-class-certificationhttps://therealnews.com/prisoners-sue-over-inhumane-conditions-on-angolas-brutal-farm-linehttps://therealnews.com/prison-farms-and-agricarceral-slave-laborhttps://therealnews.com/louisiana-still-imprisons-people-convicted-by-jim-crow-juries Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-real-news-podcast--2952221/support.Help us continue producing radically independent news and in-depth analysis by following us and becoming a monthly sustainer.Follow us on:Bluesky: @therealnews.comFacebook: The Real News NetworkTwitter: @TheRealNewsYouTube: @therealnewsInstagram: @therealnewsnetworkBecome a member and join the Supporters Club for The Real News Podcast today!

When water systems fail, the damage is not the same for everyone. In Flint, the deepest harm lives in children's brains. In other cities, the damage is buried in pipes, mains, and hydrants. In this episode, Arthur Busch examines what really gets damaged when public water systems fail—and why the law treats those harms very differently. The episode opens in Flint, Michigan, with the story of Lee Anne Walters and her twin sons, who lost developmental skills after drinking lead-contaminated tap water. Their experience illustrates what lead exposure looks like up close: not statistics or charts, but children who had to relearn colors, numbers, and basic coordination, and who continue to struggle years later. This is the most enduring harm of bad water—damage carried inside a child's body and brain for life. From there, the episode draws a critical distinction between human damage and infrastructure damage. In Flint, the deepest injury is neurological and developmental, raising issues of justice, lifetime support, and accountability. In other cities, such as Miramar, Florida, and Greenville, South Carolina, the primary damage has been mechanical—corroded copper plumbing, failing ductile iron pipe, clogged mains, and compromised fire flow. Those cases focus on replacing pipe, repairing systems, and preventing the next failure. The episode explores how these different kinds of harm move through the legal system. In Flint, class actions and civil rights claims seek compensation for children's injuries, medical monitoring, special education needs, and property loss. In Miramar and Greenville, lawsuits target cities, engineers, and manufacturers over defective design, testing failures, and pipe performance, aiming to shift future repair costs away from ratepayers.Along the way, the episode examines how water crises have become a litigation business model, with large contingency-fee cases driving accountability only after harm has already occurred. It also looks at how new Lead and Copper Rule requirements are reshaping evidence, documentation, and liability—often after cities have already gambled with aging infrastructure.Ultimately, this episode asks a hard policy question: Is our system designed to protect the public, or mainly to manage liability after failure? Pipes can be replaced. Children cannot. The choices judges, regulators, and lawmakers make about prevention, accountability, and funding will determine whether future crises are stopped early—or simply paid for later. This episode is part of The Mitten Channel, a Michigan-based podcast network examining law, public policy, and life in America's industrial communities. A full transcript follows.

Welcome to the Thousand Stories podcast, the Renaissance Series. Hosted by Justin Brown, former Secretary of Human Services in the state of Oklahoma, and Luke Williams, this series marks a true rebirth for Health and Human Services. While the original podcast shared incredible untold stories happening in Health and Human Services beyond the negative headlines, the Renaissance Series is now stepping into a new era of innovation and transformation. We are moving toward a more connected, human-centered, and innovative future by exploring how leaders, researchers, and practitioners are building systems that truly serve people. In this specific episode, the hosts are joined by Mike Leech (former State Director for the South Carolina Department of Social Services) and Samantha Galloway (former Interim Director at the Department of Human Services in Oklahoma) to discuss the impact and influence of class action lawsuits in the Health and Human Services segment.Class action lawsuits are increasing rapidly against state systems, particularly in child welfare. Too often, these cases become lengthy and adversarial, and resulting settlement agreements can be complex and challenging to operationalize, contributing to extended oversight and uneven progress. This conversation explores a more collaborative and sustainable path. The guests and hosts examine methods for bringing plaintiffs' counsel and state leaders into informed, good-faith dialogue earlier, including pre-litigation conversations and mediation. The aim is to build shared facts and shape durable commitments that agencies can deliver, ensuring improvements are meaningful and long-lasting.Discover why culture is key to sustaining reform, and the importance of building a system with trust and transparency—both with external monitors and internally with staff. The discussion emphasizes moving past being "paralyzed in the fear" of litigation to drive change today, accelerating improvement, and building a self-correcting system that utilizes technology to move beyond outdated processes. Ultimately, this episode explores how aligning on a shared vision can reduce conflict and move more resources toward serving children and families

For decades, private equity has been the darling of pension funds, university endowments, and sovereign wealth funds, promising high returns and low volatility. Now, President Donald Trump has made it possible for everyday investors to get in on the magic with his executive order, "Democratizing Access to Alternative Assets for 401(k) Investors.” The order relieves regulatory burdens that limit the access of defined contribution plans, like 401(k)s, to alternative assets such as private equity (but also cryptocurrency and real estate). The hope is to give American workers access to greater choice, diversification, and potential growth towards a comfortable retirement. But Trump's order comes just as longstanding questions about private equity's promise of high returns and low risk are coming to the fore. Has the distribution of returns slowed to a trickle? What does data actually say about private equity's performance, and where is the industry headed? There is also a long standing debate whether private equity is good for society, independent of financial returns. Is private equity actually a ponzi scheme that now threatens the retirements of millions of American workers? To make sense of it all, Luigi and Bethany are joined by Dan Rasmussen, an experienced investor and author who began his career in private equity but has emerged as one of the most prescient critics of the industry. Together, the three of them distill what the state of the industry means for the future welfare of investors, workers, and the American economy as a whole.Bonus: Check out ProMarket's recent series on the impact of private equity in the health care industry.

Media coverage over the economic impact of President Trump's tariffs has been robust, but not a ton of attention has been paid to the actual legality of them. So that's where Andrew and Mary begin, after two court decisions in the last week questioned the merits and where jurisdiction lies. Then they turn to the president's significant use of the pardon power to commute sentences and override convictions of some friends and allies, and what it says about maintaining a belief in blind justice. And after some great reporting from the New York Times, Mary and Adnrew detail some changes happening within Director Kash Patel's FBI, as bureau leaders are taken down a peg and emphasis on public corruption is dialed back.Further reading: Here is the New York Times reporting concerning the FBI: Unease at F.B.I. With so many issues stemming from President Trump's executive orders now before the Supreme Court, it's tough to know where to begin. So Andrew and Mary start this week with the arguments heard last Thursday from Mary's ICAP team on the courts issuing national injunctions in several birthright citizenship cases. They recap Thursday's highlights and note the Justices' interest in getting to the merits of the birthright issue. Then, they talk through two SCOTUS decisions from Friday and Monday: one on the Trump administration using the Alien Enemies Act to ‘extract' Venezuelan migrants, and the other on their attempt to revoke the protected status of Venezuelans. Last up, Andrew and Mary turn to the specifics of a few of the immigration removal cases, as hearings continue and the lack of due process continues to be challenged.Want to listen to this show without ads?
