We're shining a light on the difference between luck and blessings when Patty Arvielo, co-founder & CEO of New American Funding, joins host Chris Schembra on this episode of Gratitude Through Hard Times. Running the largest Latina-owned mortgage company in the U.S. while nurturing a network of younger women coming up behind her, Patty is all about leaning into humanness. She shares the many ways in which gratitude and empathy have served as beacons professionally, as a parent and throughout a 27-year marriage that embodies commitment and respect. You'll learn about how Patty and her husband, Rick, founded New American Funding in 2003 and grew it into a juggernaut that has underwritten 250,000 mortgages worth $69 billion and employs 4,000 people – a majority of whom are women and 41% of whom are minorities. All this success is rooted in Patty's intentionality around core values, like creating positive impact and improving the lives of others. Want to manifest abundance and overcome fear? Not just walking down the aisle and a piece of paper.” (Patty) “When I feel fear or am scared of making decisions, it's in action that I'm able to move forward. I'm not complacent. I don't hide. And I don't complain.” (Patty) “If you look at a negative autobiographical experience that put you in a hole or a moment of adversity, the positive benefits far outweigh the negative. You can actually be grateful that that thing occurred.” (Chris) “Anything you intend to do to impact your life and make it better is creating blessings for yourself and putting in the work to create the life you want. That isn't luck. That's work!” (Patty) “I find myself getting a lot of satisfaction in helping others and creating happiness for others when they're aligned with things that I'm doing.” (Patty) “If you're competing with companies that are like yours, they have the same journey and struggles as you. When you're around like-minded people in the same business as you, it's really an ‘aha' moment!” (Patty) “When you seek out and find your purpose, things will become clearer to you … I know my purpose is to impact others. It's what I enjoy. I love the little wins.” (Patty) “Yes, cultivating meaningful moments is hard. It requires unyielding vulnerability and courage and deep trust and truth … but it erases the poverty of the soul. Kelda started her sporting career playing netball at a national level as a teenager. Sport very quickly became the thing that defined who she was and the person she wanted to be. Her real passion lay with horses and her ultimate goal was to ride for her country and represent Great Britain at the Olympics.  Unfortunately, after a serious leg injury in 2002, Kelda's hopes of competing at an international level seemed to have disappeared. The leg injury had a huge impact on her life, leaving her no longer able to run or play many of the sports that meant so much to her. This had a huge impact on her confidence and self-belief, and she spent nearly 10years fighting to accept who she was.  In 2002 she decided to climb Kilimanjaro, and this proved to be the start of a new direction in life. She returned and began retraining as an outdoor instructor. As a result of the dramatic effect the outdoors had on her own mental and physical recovery, Kelda decided she wanted to help others facing similar challenges to herself, and this led her to set up the charity Climbing Out.   Kelda went on to represent Great Britain in Paracanoe and competed at the 2015 World Cup and the 2016 World Championships. The ultimate goal was the Rio Paralympics.   Unfortunately she just missed out on selection for Rio, but she went on to join an Adaptive Team attempting to climb Aconcagua, the highest mountain in South America at 7,000m.    On the 19th January 2017 she became the first recorded adaptive female to summit the mountain.   In summiting, Kelda found many of the answers she'd been searching for since her injury and this inspired her to attempt a solo row of the Atlantic. After 76 days unsupported at sea, Kelda became the first adaptive person to ever solo row any ocean.   But the challenges didn't stop there. 12 months ago Kelda was diagnosed with breast cancer. She decided to set herself the goal of completing a triathlon as motivation to push through her recovery.    She completed her first triathlon just 4 months post mastectomy and went on to complete 2 further triathlons last year, including the Snowman Triathlon, known for being the toughest triathlon in the country. She now has her sights set on completing a half ironman in 2022.   New episodes of the Tough Girl Podcast go live every Tuesday at 7am UK time - Subscribe so you don't miss out.    To help increase the amount of female role models in the media. Here's a sample of what readers are saying: Very good scriptural advise. By Amazon Customer on November 24, 2021 Highly impressed with this book. The 1st chapter and 7th chapters alone are worth the book. The reader is directed to the very source of help and where to get it. From God and his written word. I love that the writer not just once but twice gives the prayer to pray for Salvation. This is a very Christ centered book and Jesus only as the way to Heaven. The writer uses just enough personal testimony to make her advice as tried, tested and true. Overall very sound Biblical truth and advise.   SPONSOR Teague's Grocery and Cafe 130 Soco Road Maggie Valley North Carolina 28751 Delivery by GRUBHUB Living With Victory Ministries, Inc. God created us with different gifts and personalities.  We each view life differently; some through positive eyes and some through negative eyes.  When trusting in God, we may start out positive, but when a situation goes on for a long time, we tend to start complaining and doubting anything will change because we can't see how it can change. A breast cancer diagnosis, a Mastectomy and then (in true Kelda Wood style) a triathlon! AL just had to find out what drove Kelda to put herself through so much after being poorly. Throughout the day there were money tins spread throughout the town for Kelda's charity "Climbing Out" On 8th October Climbing Out are doing a Fundraising Hike in Snowdonia and they are looking for people to get involved. Kelda Wood came on the show a few weeks ago to talk about her story and where her charity "Climbing Out" came from. This Open Studio session was an opportunity for us to hear from participants of Climbing Out about their experiences. AL and Shane speak to Kelda and 2 people that were a part of a Climbing Out course, Zoe and Graeme. Just exactly what was it about the course that Zoe and Graeme found helpful, what challenges were faced and were there life-long lessons that were learned from it? "I love that we have had the opportunity to look at Climbing Out from a different perspective and all being well we might be able to look even deeper by taking part in some activities. This excites me because being able to illustrate a charity that could be helpful to so many people would be a brilliant use of The Biscuit. I like Kelda she's a good egg :)"

AL speaks to Kelda Wood about her amazing, inspiring charity Climbing Out. Offering people who have suffered traumatic experiences opportunities to get out there take part in amazing challenges and learn to overcome those traumas, Climbing Out is truly amazing. Kelda herself has had to deal with a life altering injury herself and is now offering help to others in a safe, vibrant and friendly setting. Kelda is an amazing example of how one can push themselves to the extreme, whether its climbing to the top of Mt Kilimanjaro or rowing single handed across the Atlantic Ocean. If I was going to find a mentor to teach me how to overcome the most extreme challenges in life it would be Kelda. "I feel super privileged to have spoken with Kelda and would love to check out Climbing out in person when the world opens up again. Kelda Wood was hoping for a career as a show jumper when a one-ton bale of hay fell on her, crushing her leg. Through this life-changing accident she grew even more determined, starting the charity Climbing Out to help people who have survived injury and trauma. Last year Kelda spent three months in total isolation, becoming the first para-athlete to row solo across the Atlantic, driven on by thoughts of the many people her charity is helping. It is an incredibly inspiring story of pushing through pain and loneliness, day after day, as strong winds threatened to push her right back where she came from. Just the sort of thing you need to hear if life's little problems are getting you down.

We are excited to welcome author Ido Kedar to the show to discuss (through voice output) his book Ido in Autismland, Climbing Out of Autism’s Silent Prison.   Ido Kedar is a 16 year old boy with severe autism. He communicates by typing without tactile support on an iPad or letterboard. He is a general education student in the 10th grade taking a full, unmodified class load.  He is the recent author of Ido in Autismland: Climbing Out of Autism’s Silent Prison, which is available on Amazon. He blogs on autism at www.idoinautismland.com and can be followed on twitter and facebook. Ido presents frequently on autism at conferences  and classes. My goal is to help people to better understand non-verbal autism in terms of symptoms, treatment, education, communication and research. I try to explain autism from the inside out . In my book, blog and speeches I strive to help people see that the potential to communicate exists in so many other people with non-verbal autism. It is my hope that they too can be liberated from their silence and isolation and get a true education.
