Buckle up! This week country powerhouse Lainey Wilson joins us fresh off the deluxe release of her album Whirlwind – and in the middle of her global tour. From becoming the first woman to host the CMA Awards solo since Reba McEntire in 1991 to headlining Stagecoach next year, Lainey opens up about how she juggles it all, what it took to get here, and where she's headed next. We're also joined by guitarist Andrew Leahey, whose road to Nashville stardom looks a little different from Lainey's – but is every bit as inspiring. Tune in for a conversation that captures the grit, grind, and glory behind today's musicians. Country is Here…Nashville is Now. Check out our Hear Now playlist on Spotify, updated weekly. Joey got 70 mosquito bites on his legs while fishing last night. Nancy is lucky to be awake and at work because she turned her alarms off instead of snoozing them. WIVK won the CMA Award for station of the year! We had to anxiously wait for a phone call yesterday to find out if we won. WIVK won, but our show did not. Hot Tea: Dolly Parton’s sister asked for prayers for Dolly on a social post yesterday. Everyone freaked out, so she posted a follow up saying that Dolly is okay and it’s nothing too serious. She is just sick, and her sister wanted prayers for her. Taylor Swift says that she won’t play the Super Bowl because she is too “locked in” on watching Travis play. We think that’s a PR answer and that there’s another reason behind the scenes. Jerry Jones was fined a ton of money for flipping off fans at a football game. He claims it was an accident. Joey has started watching a show on Hulu but HATES all of the ads. Cody Johnson had to cancel all of his upcoming tour dates because he has to have surgery because his ear drum busted. Lucky 7 Joey got real about his relationship with his dad. He realized that he doesn’t really know his dad beyond the normal surface level stuff. Zach Top called and talked about online rumors, his social media, his upcoming concert, and more! Bob Ross paintings are going up for auction! See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Sid talks to one of the biggest and brightest stars in country music – Lainey Wilson. Back in May, he drove up to Nashville and got to have this conversation in person at Lainey's farmhouse outside of town. The occasion was a Southern Living cover shoot, and Lainey and Sid sat down on a pair of comfortable chairs in her speakeasy-style basement, which is where she writes a lot of her songs. Lainey couldn't have been more welcoming as a host, even though she'd been touring nonstop for her latest album, Whirlwind. She's also hosting the CMA Awards in mid-November, and she's appearing in the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover's novel Reminders of Him early next year. But Lainey has clearly not forgotten her small-town roots in Baskin, Louisiana, or the importance of good friends, family, and her faith. She talked a lot about how she stays grounded, how she keeps holding on despite a wild few years in Nashville, and the importance of keeping her people close. She also told some funny stories about her fiance, Devlin Hodges, who goes by Duck, and how she and her family celebrate Thanksgiving. Riley Green got his start playing in bars and restaurants around his hometown of Jacksonville, Alabama—and lately he's been performing in stadiums for tens of thousands. He grew up with a close relationship with his two grandfathers, who were influential in his early musical development and who fueled his passion for the outdoors. His song "I Wish Grandpas Never Died," a tribute to both of them, was a major hit back in 2019, and more recently he's recorded a couple of duets with Ella Langley – one of which, “you look like you love me,” won a CMA Award last year. In some ways, Riley has gone back to his roots by opening a bar called the Duck Blind in Nashville, which has become a favorite hangout for some of the biggest names in country music. Sid talks to the rising star about the influence of his Southern upbringing, his love of Jacksonville State football, and his new song, “Jesus Saves.” For more info visit: southernliving.com/biscuitsandjam Biscuits & Jam is produced by: Sid Evans - Editor-in-Chief, Southern Living Krissy Tiglias - GM, Southern Living Lottie Leymarie - Executive Producer Michael Onufrak - Audio Engineer/Producer Jeremiah McVay - Producer Learn more about your ad choices. Sid talks to the rising star about the influence of his Southern upbringing, his love of Jacksonville State football, and his new song, “Jesus Saves.” Learn more about your ad choices. When mandolinist Sierra Hull was little, her dad told her she was really good "for a ten year old." The older Hull knew Sierra had a fiery passion for the instrument and he knew exactly how to motivate his daughter. He went on to say that if she wanted to go to jams and porch-play for the rest of her life, she'd learned enough. He gave her realistic advice that, if she wanted to dedicate her life to music, she would have to work really hard. Because "that 10 year old cute thing is gonna wear off." Sierra, who would draw pictures of herself playing at the Grand Ole Opry with Alison Krauss and doodle album covers with the Rounder Records logo, took his advice to heart and got to work.Since then, Hull has shared the stage with more heroes than one could count, she's inspired a new generation of younger players, she's released five albums, and is considered a master of the mandolin. Originally from the small town of Byrdstown, Tennessee, her new album, 'A Tip Toe High Wire,' is set for release March 7. In our Basic Folk conversation Sierra reflects on how growing up in a small town shaped her musical identity alongside bluegrass, gospel, and family traditions. She shares memories of family gatherings filled with music featuring Aunt Betty and Uncle Junior, the profound influence of church hymns, and how these experiences continue to resonate in her playing and songwriting.Sierra also discusses the significance of 'A Tip Toe High Wire,' her first independent release, highlighting the freedom and growth that come with that independence. She emphasizes the importance of authenticity in her music, allowing herself to explore new sounds while remaining grounded in her bluegrass roots. Elsewhere in the episode, she opens up about her personal growth, the pressures of being labeled a child prodigy, and her journey toward embracing imperfection in her art. We also dive into what we'll call her "Stevie Nicks Era" with the amazing cover-art on the new record. Sierra enjoys playing with elaborate styles in her album artwork and red carpet looks (helloooo CMA Awards). With a candid perspective on the challenges of the music industry, she encourages listeners to find joy in the process while appreciating the beauty of vulnerabilityAlso woo hoo!!! Well, what do you know. Sports and Politics are all tangled up again right here in KC as reports indicate authorities are investigating "crime tourists" from South America in the break ins and Patrick Mahomes' and Travis Kelce's houses. This is exactly why Trump just won. I've got new details on a cartel from Chile that is in America preying on rich, high profile homes. ESPN reporter Adam Schefter tells a tale about breaking a story about the Chiefs years ago in the most private fashion. A new story quoting sources inside Trump World is an excellent read about his A Number One adviser where second place is miles in the distance. Bill O'Reilly has some shocking thoughts about MSNBC and other networks being spun off by Comcast. Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia have left America for England. She's just the latest in a stupid sham they are publicizing for no good reason at all. And the gaffe of the year happens during the biggest moment of the night at the CMA Awards.
