The opening weeks of the Lampard Inquiry into 2,000 mental health patient deaths in Essex have been devoted to so-called "impact statements" made by relatives of those who've died. The inquiry is expected to run until 2026. We hear from the BBC's East of England health correspondent Nikki Fox, who's been at the hearings on what it's like listening to such harrowing testimony. She also explains the background to the inquiry and what it's designed to achieve. Julia Hopper, the mother of Chris Nota, whose death aged 19 is being examined as part of the proceedings, tells Access All how she felt when she made her impact statement. We also hear from competitors taking part in next month's Cybathlon. The event pits developers and users of assistive tech against rival teams, and they use their devices to compete in contests and races. The University of Bath team share their hopes of triumph for the technology they've developed to read the brainwaves of a man whose lower body is paralysed, so he can move external objects.Presenter Emma Tracey Producer Daniel Gordon Recorded and mixed by Dave O'Neill Editors: Beth Rose and Damon Rose If you have been affected by any of the topics discussed in this episode you can visit BBC Actionline for more support. This podcast interview focuses on product innovation that has the power to avoid people that get paralyzed from having to start their lives over. My guest is Mark Daniels, Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition.Mark Daniel was born and raised in Pensacola. He injured his spine almost 13 years ago and have been using a wheelchair since. In 2010, Mark was asked to assist IHMC with evaluating their first powered exoskeleton, and he kept this involvement since. He has now joined IHMC as a full time research intern to work on the design, fabrication, and testing of the exoskeleton for the Cybathlon. Mark anticipates the Cybathlon to make a huge stride in technology and awareness to improve quality of life for those with loss of mobility due to injury or illness across the world. "Every day I am confronted with the reality that I am paralyzed. Every day I face this reality to find comfort in my abilities and not anger in my disability – we all have disabilities and I encourage everyone to live unrestrained.” This inspired me, and hence I invited Mark to my podcast. We explore the world of Exoskeleton, the major advances over the last 10 years and how the blend of hardware, software and active user involvement has been fundamental to this.We discuss what the innovation should be really all about, how to accelerate it, and what mental obstacles one has to overcome to come out as a winner. Here are some of his quotes:I look at everything that we're doing here at IHMC and all the other exoskeletons, and the other technology that is giving mobility back to people with disabilities. I look at all of this as hopefully, that 18 year old kid that I was. An accident will happen to him, and he will get paralyzed. And some of the technology that I'm working on or helping to push or develop will be what he's given whenever he has the same problem that I did. And he'll go back to the same job that he had and he won't have to start his life over.We notice who makes strides in the market, and who wins in that market. And it's the people that pay attention to the feedback of their end user. And the way to do that is to get somebody that's gonna want your technology and then give them a reason to want it.During this interview, you will learn four things:Why it is key to create solutions that smartly balance working with you, as much as for youThat users have alternatives – sometimes radically different from what you offer. And to make them want to change you have to deliver a shift in value. Why it is key to not argue with a user whether what they want is a good idea or not. That art and technology are not that different – and that’s where the opportunity hidesFor more information about the guest from this week:Mark DanielsWebsite IHMC See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Wheelchair Life to the Exoskeleton, Human Robotics Lifestyle:I began my exoskeleton pilot certification in 2007 at the age of 18. In 2010, I was introduced to the Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) where a team of engineers and computer scientists had developed MINA, their first paraplegic mobility device or exoskeleton. Over the last decade, we have worked together to develop hardware capable of mimicking the human gate and necessary software to drive it. We are currently weeks away from testing our 4th iteration exoskeleton, QUIX, as a part of our participation in Toyota's Mobility Unlimited Challenge after we compete in the 2020 Cybathlon later this year. It has been an honor to witness the advances in technology and evolution of handicap sports. In response to witnessing these miraculous achievements, I have spent the past 13 years of my life pushing the limits of the wheelchair that certified me for this opportunity. What I thought would ruin my life has given me more than I ever could have earned on my own two feet. Quote: How many stairs?Mark Daniel, Pilot Designer, evaluator, and user representative, Mark was born and raised in Pensacola. As a young adult, he graduated high school early and pursued a career in ironwork. First going to trade school for diesel mechanics, then learning how to weld and fabricate. In 2007, at eighteen years old, Mark started his career and began planning his next steps. Working long hours in risky conditions was exciting at first, but after five months the work took its toll. He fell asleep driving home, flipping his SUV several times, and awoke in the ICU of a local hospital. After learning of his paralysis, he set out to regain his independence. In 2010 Mark evaluated IHMC's first iteration exoskeleton, and again in 2013 for the second. In February 2016 he rejoined the team as a research intern to evaluate the third iteration and prepare for the Cybathlon. Mark placed second in the Cybathlon, winning the silver medal. Since the Cybathlon he has taken on the American Discovery Trail, which covers 4,834 miles from the Atlantic coast in Delaware to the Pacific in San Francisco.   Top 3 Hot Point Takeaways:What it takes to relearn a new way of the young adult life. But you know, I'm 31 now, it'll be 13 years in October, and, and really, looking back at the situation, it couldn't have come at a better time. I say that at 18 years old, I figured out my life, I had a career plan, I was on that plan, and I was moving forward. But I mean, really looking at the experiences up till then I grew up riding dirt bikes, go-karts, four-wheelers, skateboards, bicycles, running through the woods, fishing, hunting, you know, the good, healthy, youthful adrenaline life. 20:00 - In 2010 and I met all of the engineers and everybody working on the project. There were so many different engineers, interns, and all that have worked on the project in and out, but we really just have an awesome team here. I've been graced to work with them all really, I mean, all the people that I work with here, there's Tyson in the glasses there on the right, Peter on the left, and that's Jeremy. All these people that I've known for so...

Dr. Robert Riener is a professor at ETH Zurich in Switzerland. His research involves exoskeletons, brain-computer interfaces, and EEG. He is also in charge of running the Cybathlon in ETH Zurich, which is an Olympic-like event where patients with disabilities compete, using assistive robotic devices. In this episode, he discusses the Cybathlon, its events, and its goals and purpose. Top three takeaways: The Cybathlon is a major athletic competition where the participants use assistive robotic devices and prosthetics to compete in the events, which are centered around daily life activities. The main purpose of the Cybathlon is to promote inclusion of people with disabilities. Most of the teams are developing specific technologies to participate in the Cybathlon, so this event has also helped spark a movement in creating new robotic technologies. [0:00] Ladan introduces the episode and the guest, Dr. Robert Riener [2:20] Riener discusses his research and how the robotic devices that he researches work [6:30] Cybathlon is an athletic competition for disabled people who use robotic devices; there are several events including the brain-computer interface race [9:00] Russia also enjoys this event, and is coordinating their own similar event. President Putin has stated that he is willing to organize the next international Cybathlon event in Russia in 2024. [12:30] The most important goal of the Cybathlon is to support the inclusion of people with disabilities into athletic events [15:00] The obstacle courses in the events are centered around daily life events; for example, an activity for patients with arm prosthetics may involve the use of the BCI arm to manipulate and carry objects [18:30] The awards in the competition include not only a medal and a cup, but also the honor of participating, and the “Swiss experience” [21:00] “Techno-doping” is approved, and even encouraged, as long as it is done in a safe manner [25:00] About 80% of the teams competing in the Cybathlon are developing completely new technologies, or are updating existing technologies [28:20] This could be the biggest brain-computer interface event that’s ever happened

In today’s episode, Ken and Dawn interview their colleague Dr. Peter Neuhaus, a senior research scientist here at IHMC. Peter is an engineer well-known for his work on wearable robotic devices. In particular, Peter has focused on lower extremity exoskeleton devices and their applications for mobility assistance for paraplegics and other people with disabilities or partial paralysis. In 2016, Peter lead an IHMC team that won a silver medal in the international Cybathlon, a competition conducted in Zurich in which people with disabilities used advanced assistive devices, including robotic technologies, to compete against each other. In today’s interview, Peter talks about IHMC’s humanoid robotic efforts as well as his work with NASA designing an exercise machine for a human mission to Mars or other missions beyond low earth orbit. Peter also describes the work he is doing with IHMC High-Performance Director Joe Gomes, the former Oakland Raiders strength and conditioning coach. Peter and Joe as well as others at IHMC are designing exercise technologies to extend the resilience of high-performing humans, such as astronauts and elite warfighters. Many of these technologies will eventually be able to be utilized by the general public. Ken asks Peter what led him there. 4:04: Ken asks why Peter decided to major in mechanical engineering. 4:35: Dawn asks Peter what led him to travel across the country to attend the University of California, Berkeley for graduate school after he graduated from MIT. 5:10: Dawn asks what it was like for Peter to teach science to 5th- and 6th-graders as well as high-schoolers in Brooklyn after he received his master’s degree from Berkeley. 6:23: Peter talks about how after two years of teaching, he decided his window of opportunity to get a doctorate was shrinking and that it was essentially “now or never,” which led him back to Berkeley. 7:02: Dawn mentions that once Peter finished his doctorate, he went to work for a startup as a mechanical engineer. She asks what sort of work he did there. 7:47: Dawn talks about how a year and a half after getting his doctorate Peter met his future wife, who eventually led him to Pensacola, and in a roundabout way, to IHMC. She asks if he could share how that all came about. 9:22: Ken comments on how since joining IHMC in 2003, Peter has focused on wearable robotics systems and legged robots. Ken further mentions that Peter was one of the lead IHMC researchers participating in the DARPA Learning Locomotion project, where he helped develop quadrupedal locomotion algorithms for the Little Dog robot. Ken asks if Peter could talk about his work on this project? 11:08: Dawn, continuing with the discussion about DARPA projects, mentions that Peter played an important role in both the development of technology and in the management of IHMC’s humanoid robotics effort for the DARPA Robotics Challenge that was held between 2013 and 2015. IHMC placed second and brought home $1 million in prize money. Dawn asks what that experience was like. 12:10: Ken mentions there were three competitions that were part of the robotics challenge, and asks Peter to talk about IHMC’s performance in each of the competitions.

Cricket in The Jungle, a different Calais How will history remember the now demolished Calais Migrant Camp? Reporting of this story would suggest that the ripping apart of 'The Jungle' has been a narrative of human suffering and hopelessness - but perhaps there's more to tell. Journalist Rosamund Urwin visited the camp in its final weeks and returned home determined to do something. Her partner, Charlie Campbell, is a publisher and captain of The Authors cricket team. Together, they returned to The Jungle with bats, balls and stumps and played cricket with those they found there. How much of a difference do they think they made that day and is that where there involvement with those refugees ended? Who'd be a Host? Is London's Olympic Stadium fit to host Premier League football? There'll be extra policing when West Ham host Stoke City on Saturday, a reaction to rival fans clashing during last week's League Cup tie against Chelsea. The cost of converting the venue for Football is also now the subject of an enquiry, ordered by London's Mayor. What did London get wrong, and why do host cities and nations appear to make similar mistakes? Is there a 'How To' checklist which potential bidders should be looking at before entering any race? Professor Mikkel Draebye believes that there is. He's an expert in Strategy, Entrepreneurship & Sports Management. Based in Milan, he's recently seen Rome pull out of the race for the 2024 Olympic Games - but believes that's actually a positive ... suggesting a greater "maturity" now with bidding cities weighing risk against reward. How can you pedal a bicycle if you're paralysed? What you'll need is Functional Electrical Stimulation. F.E.S uses electric pulses to activate the leg muscles and get them pedalling. The technology has been showcased at what's been dubbed the very first "Bionic Olympics". Actually called The Cybathlon, last month's event held just outside Stockholm was all about assistive technology and a glimpse of the future in terms of how people with disabilities might be able to overcome day-to-day practical challenges. Susie Dent's Secret Language The 'professional eavesdropper' Susie Dent has been tuning into other people's conversations all her life. She tells Sportshour how she's uncovered the secret language of popular culture 'tribes' ... words that bin men, solicitors and cabin crew use only between themselves. Susie explains that sport also has its fair share of terms which make no sense to anyone else - not clichés, but insiders' speak - and shares some of her favourites with us. Man versus Fat A football league for overweight men, where you're rewarded for winning (matches) and for losing (weight). Set up early in 2016 by Andrew Shanahan, his idea is working. It's Pole Sports, NOT Pole Dancing The International Pole Sport Federation is seeking official recognition by the International Olympic Committee, with a view to one day competing at the Games. But what is Pole Sports? IPSF President Katie Coates tells Sportshour that, if the pole was horizontal, they'd be classed as gymnastics - but one thing they are not is exotic dance. We hear from some of the competitors taking part and to Professor Robert Riener from the University of Zurich, an expert in developing robot-aided rehabilitation and organiser of this unique competition “If Only Australia Were Proud Of Us” Is counting medals the best way for nations to judge Olympic success? We hear from Australian rower and Rio gold medalist Kim Brennan who thinks that people should worry less about the number of golds won, and concentrate much more on creating opportunities to inspire young people to participate in sport. Ryder Cup: The Ryder Cup is a mainstay of the sporting calendar, but what drove a flower seed salesman from the small English town of St. Albans to start the tournament and lend his name to it. We look at the life and legacy of Samuel Ryder. Far From the Fame: For many being an athlete in the NFL allows for a comfortable lifestyle, with some players very happy to show the world just how comfortable! But what happens when you find you aren’t getting any enjoyment out of this lifestyle detached from the reality of how most of the fans live... That’s what happened to David Vobora who played for the Rams and Seahawks but gave up the game at a young age to pursue something that it's fair to say, has changed him.
