After a too-long hiatus attending meetings with Su Perbusy, most of the 3D's are back, this time with a look back to the year 1987. Russ Taff and The Imperials both released career records that year, while newcomers like Magaret Becker and Steven Curtis Chapman burst onto the scene. Join Dan and Derek (and a special robot guest) as they go back in time to the year 1987. --- Show Note: Dan mentioned the YouTube guitarist who performs covers of Dann Huff solos. Actually, there are two of them. First, there is the unnamed guitarist at the White Guitar Channel. Here he is covering Dann's solo on "Never Wanna Go Back" by Geoff Moore and two different Dann solos on the song "Unexpected Friends." The second YouTuber is guitarist Kristian Larsen. Here is Krisian covering Dann's solo from Smitty's "Cross of Gold" and the iconic solo on "Secret Ambition." --- Dan Day is a semi-retired, former small business owner in the Wichita area. On this episode, the country guitarist walks Shifty through her blazing solo on "Hits Me," after sharing all about what makes her guitar-mind tick. "I've always looked at guitar solos as additional lyrics to the song," says Lindsay Ell. She approaches guitar solos by balancing their voice with that of the actual vocal, and on this episode of Shred With Shifty, the country guitarist and songwriter—who really draws from a host of genres, including rock, jazz, and blues—breaks down her epic solo on "Hits Me" for host Chris Shiflett, walking him through each phrase and figure. But before the two get into the solo breakdown, they cover some ground delving into topics like Lindsay's early bluegrass studies (and how her teacher Randy Bachman later introduced her to jazz and blues), her experience playing with producer Dann Huff, and why there aren't more female lead guitarists. (For that last one, she's not sure she has the answer, but is proud to be on the vanguard!) "Hits Me" is in Bb, which could be a challenging key to play in, and even Chris admits he gets lost on the fretboard if his songs aren't in the far more common keys of E, A, or G. But, she didn't want to be pigeonholed as the "girl who uses a capo," throwing it out at a very young age, and plays the solo high up on the neck, mostly on the top strings, around the 16th fret. It's also full of "guitarmony"—which she loves doing on just one guitar, although the solo was tracked on two for the recording to throw a bone to the mixing engineer. In the final minutes of the ep, Lindsay reveals one of her favorite warm up exercises, which she calls "chromatic spiders," which Shifty finds pretty wild (and they sound just as creepy as their name). Watch the full episode to get the whole story on Lindsay and the nuts and bolts of her guitar wizardry. Click below to subscribe to the podcast! EPISODE 37 - The Christian rock band Whiteheart was formed in 1982 by singer Steve Green, guitarist Dann Huff, bassist Gary Lunn, keyboardists Mark Gersmehl and Billy Smiley, and drummer David Huff, most of the members alumni of Bill Gaither's group. After debuting with a self-titled effort issued on the Home Sweet Home label, Green exited the line-up, and was replaced by vocalist Scott Douglas for 1984's Vital Signs; another roster swap exchanging Dann Huff for guitarist Gordon Kennedy again shook up the Whiteheart sound just prior to 1985's Hotline. The remaining Huff brother, David, split soon after its release, as did Douglas; new vocalist Rick Florian and drummer Chris McHugh were installed in time for 1986's Don't Wait for the Movie, the last Whiteheart record to feature Gary Lunn. You'll learn a lot in this conversation. Don't miss it.
This week we have the privilege of having legendary record producer, session guitarist, and all around great guy, Dann Huff. Dann shares with us a bit of his journey from LA all-star session guitarist to Nashville icon. Tune in for some of his “hits and misses”.
Recently stepping off the stage as a host for the season finale of Canada's Got Talent, award-winning artist Lindsay Ell joins All Heart with Paul Cardall to discuss her journey leading up to CMA nominations, a Gold record, head-lining her first concert tour, and the recent release of a her hit single, “Right On Time.” Lindsay, whose toured with Keith Urban, Brad Paisely, and Sugarland is putting a voice to the pressure she feels as a career-focused woman in her 30s, “Right On Time” is an anthem for anyone who has felt pressured to be something or someone they aren't, while working on timelines determined by societal norms. ABOUT LINDSAY“I've learned to care a little less about what everybody thinks,” says singer/songwriter/guitarist Lindsay Ell. “Following my gut instinct, truly saying what I want to say—that's the magic, the elements that make you relatable and real. Before, I was worrying about writing for radio, for fans, but now this is what I know, this is my journey. And the more honest I get, the more effective it is.”With her new album, heart theory, Ell does just that, weaving the story of her journey of the heart in her own voice using her arsenal of tools as a musician and artist to give each song the sonic backdrop it deserves. “Theory is the science of music, heart theory is the science of a heart,” says Ell.The tracks take the listener along the path of the seven stages of grief: shock, denial, anger, bargaining, depression, testing and acceptance. “If my last record was called The Project, this one could be called the process.” From the shock-to-the-heart felt in the groovy opening track “Hits me” to the sing-along-at-the-top-of-your-lungs acceptance of the closing track “ReadY to love,” Ell invites you to experience her journey.Produced by the legendary Dann Huff, heart theory maintains a sonic depth and auditory aura while still conveying the emotional rawness and storytelling that highlights Ell's growth since her debut album on Stoney Creek Records, The Project, which debuted at No. 1 on the Country Album Sales Chart and was named Billboard's “Best Country Album of 2017.” That album spawned her first Top 20 hit in the US, as well as her first No.1 on the Canadian Country radio charts – making her the first female artist to top that chart in 10 years. Most recently, she scored her first No. 1 with “What Happens in a Small Town,” her duet with Brantley Gilbert – another milestone moment making her the first Canadian artist to hit No. 1 in the US since Emerson Drive's “Moments” in 2007, and the first Canadian woman to reach the top of the charts since Terri Clark with “I Just Wanna Be Mad” in 2003.Over the past 3 years, Ell has shared the stage with some of the biggest acts in the world touring with Keith Urban, Brad Paisley, and Sugarland. She has more than held her own in moments alongside such artists as Mellissa Etheridge, Billy Ray Cyrus, Robert Randolph, Billy Gibbons and other legends. She has made multiple appearances on the CMA Awards stage including playing with Carrie Underwood and performing with distinguished country group, Little Big Town, alongside other powerhouse female artists in one the biggest moments of the 2019 CMA Awards where she was also nominated for Musical Event of the Year. Ell's nominations do not stop there, she is a 2x 2020 ACM nominee for New Female Artist of the Year and Music Event of the Year.Concurrently though, Ell was grappling with the real-life complexities that come with growing up, even as a rising star. “The past couple of years, I've been through a lot,” she says. “A public break-up took me through all of the stages of heartbreak, I turned 30, I had a health scare and countless other hurdles. And I came out the other side as a full human. There are moments when life just smacks you in the face and you need to do the work of figuring out what that means, how it changed you, and how to take full control of your life.”Ell points to several of the new songs as examples of her evolution and sense of maturity. “There's a song called ‘make you' that's about a trauma that happened to me as a little girl, something I have never publicly talked about,” she says. “Holding pieces of our story back means missing out on the opportunity to feel inspired, changed, drawn to make a difference. I got into this business to change people, to make them feel something. So, it was important to me to get really honest and say that all of us have skeletons in the closet, but those things make us who we are.”With a chorus and guitar lines that soar “wAnt me back” is glowing with self-appreciation and tints of anger. “I love watching people step into their own power,” says Ell. “It is one of the most inspiring moments to watch someone finally see their full potential.” With this sentiment, Ell co-wrote this mid-tempo track with hit-maker Kane Brown along with Matt McGinn and Lindsay Rimes. Preaching confidence and that there is no other you, Ell hopes to inspire others to free themselves of the shackles that no longer serve them well.Lauded by Forbes magazine as “one of the most exciting and talented young artists in Country music,” the Calgary native learned to play guitar while traveling with her father to Country-Bluegrass camps as a young girl. Ell was championed by Randy Bachman (of Bachman Turner Overdrive and The Guess Who), who discovered her at the age of 13, and was soon touring alongside the likes of Luke Bryan and Buddy Guy.While Ell has earned special recognition for her blistering guitar playing, she notes that she doesn't want to be defined by any one dimension of her work. She says, “I don't want to be known as just a guitar player. My favorite artists, like John Mayer and Keith Urban, are great players, but that's not the only thing you think of. I write, sing, produce and think all the pieces of the puzzle come together to make an artist's story unique, to paint the full picture. Yes, this is a huge guitar record, but that's not what I want be the first thing that rings the bell when you listen.”A major part of Ell's success has come from her dedicated exposure to an international audience. She has performed on her own tour, at the C2C Festival, opening tours for stars in their home territories, and as part of the CMA's “Introducing Nashville” series in Europe and Asia (at one point playing in eight different countries in 32 days).“I've loved doing so much international travel.” she says. “I always wanted to build my career beyond the borders of North America, so it's incredible to go to New Zealand, Japan, Germany, places where they're trying to figure out what I'm saying, but they're so into it. They listen to the catalog, learn the songs, come to the show ready for the experience—they're the perfect audience, they care so much.”As Lindsay Ell gears up for a new album and continues to tour around the globe, she embraces this next chapter of her career. “Artists are always scared of the infamous sophomore album,” she says, “but I'm so excited. I've done the work, I've found the right team, and I'm coming at it from a place of more strength and more honesty. I'm ready to do this, so bring it on.”Keep up will all Lindsay Ell on her socials:Instagram Facebook | Twitter | TikTok | YouTube

We had a great conversation with Eli Young Band on The Chris & Sandy Show. We talked about many things from their song Lucky For Me, family, music, sacrifices, they told some great stories to a whole lot more! With momentum still high following their fourth career #1, MULTI-PLATINUM hitmakers ELI YOUNG BAND are releasing an introspective new single with “Break It In” via The Valory Music Co. Under producer Dann Huff, the tune explores lessons in life and love that are only learned over time well spent. As showcased through vivid Benjy Davis, Brandon Day, Daniel Ross, and Michael Whitworth-penned lyrics, EYB further delivers a booming chorus: “Like these dusty boots that walked me through / The work that got me here / And these faded jeans with Skoal can rings / I've worn out all these years / When the shine wears off, when you lose that gloss / There's so much more underneath it all / You think that good is good as it can get / Then you break it in.”“We definitely didn't just start a band and have instant success. We've continued to build it up over the years — we broke it in,” shares EYB. "We've been blessed to have had our moments of being able to sit back and soak it all in. ‘Break It In' carries a message you learn with time, and we're so excited for these lyrics to be heard far and wide!”“Break It In” closely follows THIS IS ELI YOUNG BAND: GREATEST HITS, which features chart-toppers – “Love Ain't,” PLATINUM "Drunk Last Night,” 2X PLATINUM “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” and 3X PLATINUM “Crazy Girl.” EYB has always been unique in modern Country music as a true band of brothers who cling fast to their Texas roots and has maintained an impressive trajectory with singles earning Billboard's #1 Country Song of the Year and ACM Awards Song of the Year. They have previously earned multiple nominations from GRAMMY, CMA, CMT, ACA and Teen Choice Awards. While selling out venues as a headliner from coast-to-coast, EYB has toured with Jason Aldean, Dave Matthews Band, Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, and Darius Rucker. They will continue to bring these fan-favorites and more on the road this summer with several festival appearances. This week's podcast is part of an entire month of "deep dives," a little something that we are calling "Deep Dive December with the 3D's." Here is the recipe. Start off with a heaping helping of great songs written by Chris Eaton, Roby Duke, Chris Eaton, Crissie Grossman Puig, Pam Mark Hall, and Russ & Tori Taff. Season to taste with the finest L.A. session players of the 1980s: Paul Leim, Nathan East, Neil Stubenhaus, James Newton Howard, Robbie Buchanan, Larry Williams, Dann Huff, Michael Landau, Paul Jackson, Jr., Bill Champlin, Tamara Champlin, Tommy Funderburk, Tata Vega, and Lenny Castro. What do you get? You get the album Medals, arguably Russ Taff's finest moment as a solo artist. Medals also found Taff reinventing himself for the record. As Lucas W. Hendrickson writes in the 2001 book CCM Presents: The 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music, "Medals...falls squarely between the 'former lead singer of the Imperials' vide found on his solo debut Walls of Glass and the troubled, introspective nature of his 1987 self-titled project." As far as the 3D's are concerned, no album better personifies 1980s L.A. smooth/West Coast AOR CCM quite like Medals. --- The 3D's are Dan, Derek, and Dave. Three friends who used to work together in early 1990s in Christian radio who love to reminisce about music from the golden era of CCM, 1985-1995. If you love classic Amy, Michael, Petra, Russ, and White Heart, you have found your new favorite podcast. New episodes drop every Monday. Make sure to subscribe. --- Dan Day is a small business owner in the Wichita area. From dreaming of being a session guitar player (and achieving that goal), to being glam metal band Giant’s frontman, to finally transitioning to award-winning producer (including credits on Taylor Swift’s Red, Keith Urban, Thomas Rhett, Bon Jovi, + many, many more), this week’s guest Dann Huff has had quite the iconic career. He sits down for a virtual chat with Chris to talk about his journey through the music industry, his personal production approach and style, and how “Amazed” broke his production career (along with Chris’ writing career). Dann’s credits speak for themselves (three-time winner of the Musician of the Year award at the CMA’s, and two-time winner of the Producer of the Year award at the ACM’s), but his genuine passion for music cuts even deeper. Thanks for listening, and don’t forget to visit us at pitchlistpodcast.com for more exclusive content.
Billy discusses WhiteHeart, his artist development and production company, touring and the art of song writing and producing.
For years, whenever she performed a concert, Patty Smyth heard the same question from fans: “People would be like, ‘When are you gonna give us new music? When are you gonna give us new music?' I kept saying, “I'm gonna do it, I'm gonna do it… IT'S ABOUT TIME is Smyth doing it — for the first time in 28 years, not counting the 2015 holiday album COME ON DECEMBER. And on the eight-song set, produced in Nashville by Grammy Award-winner Dann Huff, the veteran songstress is doing it with the same passion, fire and provocative temperament that she's displayed since her ferocious arrival with the band Scandal in 1982, except now with the perspective and wisdom of three more decades of life and legacy she's attained during the interim. “I've been touring and playing shows with the same band for 12 years, just having a blast,” says Smyth, a Brooklyn native who now resides in Malibu and New York City with her husband, pro tennis legend John McEnroe. “I was always writing, but I didn't really think about, ‘Should I put out a record?' It's so difficult right now, so I didn't know whether I should do it or not. Then I finally went into the zone of writing these songs I felt were poignant and relevant for me, and I started to realize this is a real thing that's happening and just went with it.” Smyth's instincts, of course, have established a career that's made her something of a legend in her own right as one of the foremost singers, and not just female singers, in rock. With the band Scandal, Smyth filled radio during the early 80s with indelible hits such as “Goodbye To You,” “Love's Got a Line on You” and “The Warrior,” a Top 10 smash that also topped the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. She didn't miss a beat after the band's dissolution, either, following with a pair of well-received solo albums (NEVER ENOUGH and the Roy Bittan-produced PATTY SMYTH) and more hits, including “Never Enough” and “Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough,” a duet with Don Henley that vaulted Smyth to the top of the Adult Contemporary charts, and to No. 1 in Canada. Along the way Smyth was also asked to replace David Lee Roth in Van Halen (she was eight months pregnant so the time wasn't right) and made guest appearances on the Hooters' NERVOUS NIGHT album and a couple of Henley's platinum releases. Her “Look What Love Has done” for the film JUNIOR was nominated for Academy and Grammy Awards, and Smyth's “Wish I Were You” was a soundtrack theme song for the 1998 box office smash ARMAGEDDON. But it's no great secret, and maybe even a source of pride, that Smyth — who reunited with Scandal for a time during the 00s — has spent most of the past two decades below the proverbial radar. Family is the main reason, raising a brood of six mine, his and ours with McEnroe and giving those duties the same determined and passionate priority Smyth gave her music career. “I was literally drowning in kids!” she says with a laugh — noting that it was daughter Ruby who encouraged Smyth to be part of the VH1 BANDS REUNITED episode in 2004 that resurrected Scandal. “My life just got too big for me to get around it. I've lived it, and it was great. But I had to step back (from music); I just didn't think I would step back for as long as I did.” With the children all grown (youngest daughter Ava is 21), Smyth found herself using songwriting to take stock of where she finds herself in life now and what she's learned over those intervening years as a wife, a mother and a community member as well as an artist who hasn't entirely shed the chippy defiance of her youth. “Y'know, here we are. We still love music, we still like to have fun, but we're in our fifties — How the hell did that happen! It went really fast, y'know. And for me that's a little bit of a bittersweet thing. It's a privilege to get older and you're lucky to get older, but you do lose things.” Recording IT'S ABOUT TIME — which also includes covers of Bobby Gentry's “Ode to Billie Joe” and Tom Waits' “Downtown Train,” both staples in Smyth's live show — in Nashville was a treat, meanwhile. (She recorded “Downtown Train” before, in fact — on her debut solo album, two years after Waits' original version and two years before Rod Stewart's hit rendition.) She wrote songs with a variety of collaborators, including good pal Liz Rose, while she's known producer Huff since his days in the rock band Giant; He's since gone on to win Producer of the Year and Musician of the Year awards from the Country Music Association and Academy of Country Music, helming hits for the likes of Shania Twain, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Martina McBride, Celine Dion, Kelly Clarkson and scores of others. “I knew him as a guitar player. When I found out he was a big producer I was like, ‘Do you want to work with me?'” Smyth recalls. They recorded primarily at legendary Blackbird Studios, with co-producer Ilya Toshinskly handling acoustic guitar and a crack band that included guitarist Derek Wells, keyboardist Charlie Judge, bassist Jimmie Lee Sloas and drummer Chris McHugh. “All I ever wanted to do was sing and perform, and when I discovered I could write I was so friggin' happy,” Smyth says. “I want to just keep getting better and more disciplined and keep moving forward. My No.1 priority, my kids, are all good and grown now, so the music can be it for me again, and I'm really enjoying that.”

Singer, songwriter and 38 Special front man Don Barnes cut an album for A&M Records almost 30 years ago during a five-year hiatus from the band he co-founded and continues to lead. Keenly aware of the "lost" album for years, Andrew McNeice at MelodicRock Records began talks with Barnes last year about bringing the music to a deserving public. Ride The Storm is now set for release on June 30, 2017. "After years of success with 38 Special, I was given an opportunity by A&M Records to create a side project as a solo artist," said Barnes. "I began co-writing with the masterful songwriter and artist, Martin Briley, and when it came time to get into the studio, I was honored to have some of the industry's top musicians on the recording. Just as it was ready to be released, A&M Records was sold through a huge global acquisition and the company changed hands several times. My project was put aside without a release date, but I'm proud to finally present my solo album with some special extras included." In searching for the original masters for Ride The Storm, Don found the only existing copy of a 'rock mix' that was commissioned in 1989 to take a look at how the songs would sound, remixed for a bigger 'rock' impact using today's technology. MelodicRock insisted both the original and updated mixes of the classic album be included in the release - as well as three individual, heavily traded, solo demo tracks that were not included on the original album's playlist. The original tracks were cut by some of the most sought after musicians on the rock scene including Dann Huff, now an award-winning producer for the likes of Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts and others; piano/keyboard whiz Alan Pasqua; the late great Toto drummer Jeff Porcaro and his late brother Mike, who also played bass for Toto; Sammy Hagar's keyboard player Jesse Harms; and former Heart drummer Denny Carmassi. "In addition to these great players, I was privileged to work and collaborate with two very talented producers - Martin Briley and Brian Foraker - both of whom brought a wealth of experience and cool vibe to our sessions," added Barnes. "We had always felt that the combination of these powerhouse players together created a very special album, a unique 'rock classic.' Many who have heard the album say that description still remains true today." The complete Ride The Storm release includes two CDs featuring the album in its original intended form, plus the second 'alternate mix' disc, on which the three additional bonus tracks are added at the end. No artwork was conceived for the original album, so Barnes collaborated with artist extraordinaire Nello Dell'Omo for the stunning Ride The Storm cover. #38Specialband #DonBarnes #SlackerMorningShow101theFox #KansasCityClassicRock #TMobile
